So I've noticed there seem to be more newbies on the meme lately, and that people are starting to get a bit fatigued by how concentrated some of the types of prompts have become in certain areas and frustrated that things have slowed down.
We were previously discussing maybe an abandoned fills challenge of some kind, but that was problematic for a bunch of reasons.
However, would anyone be interested in a challenge that incorporates the previous prompt posts MVPs? The prompts that started enormous amounts of conversation or multiple abandoned fills or mini-fills but never went anywhere?
I'm thinking that after the holidays are done and the Secret Santa wraps up, a Nostalgia Challenge might be fun and help encourage the new writers to dive into older prompt posts, but also older writers to get involved again.
It would work like this: Either I would go back (in collaboration with anyone else who wants to help) or I would accept nominations for one prompt from each post up to this point that generated the most interest and conversation but not lengty, complete fills. And then there would be eight prompts that people could choose from to work on as part of the challenge.
Then, the challenge would be for writers to do something with those prompts. We could maybe ask people to round robin them the way people are writing the slavery prompts right now and work on a set of stories as a group, or we could even do it like a Big Bang if there is at least one fan artist willing to take on each prompt to inspire potential writers. And we could open the conversation back up on those prompts by reposting them on the Challenge post.

Ok meme, I love ya, but sometimes a girl has needs. Needs that involve girls kissing and getting naked with other girls. I can't remember the last time I saw femslash on the meme or on ao3. Hardly any prompts, zero fills. And that kind of sucks because I generally go one fandom at a time.

The fandom, however, is not. I'd go as far to say it's as bad as SuperWhoLock for delusional conspiracy theories and pairing wars (wtf?) and fans that do embarrassing shit at conventions and make the actors uncomfortable, and I'm like: whyyyyy???
WHY do people feel the need to leave hate comments on the fanfics of people who ship a different pairing? I like The Walking dead and i've watched the show since the beggining but for some reason it didnt happen like Daredevil that got me looking for fics and find this place.
I thik there are "crazy" die hard fans on every fandom, example, the "Once Upon A Time" that got crazy when they turned Emma into "dark" and the shippin wars between a femlash that will never happen. It's crazy. Some fans had attacked the writers and even some actors in conventions an i get that you love them but there is gotta be a point when you are like "dude, WTH i'm doing".
Anotehr example was the recent one regarding Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D where some fans were pretty hard on one producer for liking a post about the character that died (he deserved to die and he didnt, they brought him back as someting else) on the midseason finale.
About TWD i just know the ship about Daryl and Carol and i ship them too but i dont need the urge to see my fantasies about them fullfilled like it happens with DD.

Honestly, I think it's just a general slowdown. Things will probably pick up slightly after the holidays, but really get cooking again when S2 comes out. But I am all for encouraging people to keep writing and stay inspired (obviously!)

Which means most or even all prompts are actually kinky in some form or other. Lots of explicit stuff, sex pollen, MPREG, non-con, etc. Which isn't my thing, so usually I stay away. I'm extremely happy and grateful that this one is open for everything, and I hope it stays that way forever!

Now, she's allowed to refuse a relationship for any--or no!--reason. But she does give reasons, so my problem is that her final one really doesn't hold water, as far as I can tell.
First, she claims she doesn't want to start things with him because he is too close to becoming what he hates. Fair enough. Plus, as the writers apparently figured out, she was a bit of a hot mess at the time herself, having just been tortured because people knew she knew at least a little bit about Matt. Good time not to jump into a relationship, I'd say, and the fact that what she says had a lot of validity certainly doesn't hurt.
Then, she says it's because she remembers from Sunday school that the martyrs, the saints, the saviors, all end up bloody and alone. Now that Matt's come to a firmer understanding of where he will not go, and therefore is in less danger of becoming what he hates, you're going to claim that it's his new sense of purpose that is keeping you away? Wow, it's damned if you don't, damned if you do, with her, isn't it?
I'm going to ignore the "bloody" part of her statement, since she's shown absolutely no problem with that particular part of things before (Mrs. Night Nurse, who has just finished patching Matt up and commenting on his shirtlessness), and focus on the "alone."
And the statement is great and genre-savvy of Claire to a certain extent...if she were talking about superheroes. If she were talking about superheroes, it would make sense, because their loved ones get killed off for plot-related purposes all the time, or at least since the Comics Code reign of authority ended. (Usually so the heroes will be pushed closer to the line of "becoming what they hate," obviously.) But that's not at all what she says: she says it's what she remembers from "Sunday school."
Now, my understanding is that Sunday school usually implies a Protestant background, although some Catholic churches occasionally have them (apparently, catechism classes are far more prevalent). So my question is, what kind of morbid Sunday school teacher did Claire have? And what in the world was she studying? Bible stories? Well, not really. There aren't many stories of "martyrs, saints and saviors" dying alone that I can think of, at least not that are actually told in Scripture. Samson, maybe? But he'd been alone (and blinded, ironically enough, and forced to work for his enemies) for years, because of his own sinful foolishness, before he finally managed to kill them off and die in the process. Stephen, the first Christian martyr? Stephen apparently died in the company of God. Kind of the opposite of alone. Elijah spent years on the run, but was finally given a successor to mentor and never actually died. Paul, waiting for his death in prison, wrote about a bajillion letters, many of which are now Holy Writ, in which he obviously continues relationships with friends he's had for years and is thankful for the people who continue to be there for him. I could keep going here, but I think people have gotten my point by now.
In fact, the only example I can think of that fulfills Claire's requirements is Christ Himself, one of whose lines on the cross was "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani," because He was experiencing hell on the cross in the place of those who believe in Him, and that's in large part what hell is: absolute and total separation from God. (According to this Protestant and the Westminster Shorter Catechism, at least). So, in fact, the "martyrs, saints and saviors" are never going to be as "alone" as it is possible to be, if you believe they're going to heaven.
And, Claire, honey? To a certain extent, everybody dies alone. Even if they're surrounded by a million people.
Now, I think what is really a problem for Claire is the whole "playing second fiddle to the needs of a city (or at least Hell's Kitchen)" thing, which they also do talk about. I can maybe understand that (even though she spends her free time patching up a guy because she knows he's trying to help people)? But she doesn't have to justify it by a self-fulfilling prophecy of Matt ending up "bloody and alone." No, Claire, you don't get to drop him like a ton of hot bricks and then claim that it's to help him fulfill his destiny as a "martyr, saint, savior"-type, even if you've tried to use the evidence of poorly-remembered Sunday school classes to back it up. That's being a very bad friend.
And I still wish I knew what kind of teacher(s) Claire had, and what exact material they were teaching. Or maybe I should just chuck it in the "Marvel Universe" box instead, which also holds such things as "Matt and Foggy's strange undergrad/law school" and "Doris Urich with Little Nell's Disease."

tbh, Claire strikes me as someone who's regretted helping Matt the longer she's gotten to know him. And that was further cemented by the annoyed way she was referring to him during her cameo in Jessica Jones, and the put-upon way she acted while helping Jessica and Luke.
Like, she helps because it's her job/moral code to do so, but she does so grudgingly. Which is weird, because it's her own choice to do so. No one's holding a gun to her head.

So I've seen a lot of people talking about liking gen prompts recently. And I like writing gen prompts. And it's Christmas Eve here, with me not having a completely full day.

How to avoid prompt hijacking/veering into other directions
(Anonymous) 2015-12-24 02:17 am (UTC)(link)Since it's something that's come up a few times before and it does bother people, it might be useful to talk about how we can avoid it while expanding on prompts. Not a set of rules per se, but more of some tips that could help avoid inadvertent prompt hijacking or leading prompts down that path. I really love the meme culture we have going on, and this is the best meme I've ever participated in, but I think a few tips would help keep everyone happy without limiting imaginations.
For example, I think it's important not to introduce completely new plot elements or AUs outside the prompt unless the OP brings it up themselves. I think we should be more willing to make new prompts whenever things seem to go down a new path, too. Personally I've also found that rereading the original prompt is useful too.

Because I don't mind the hijacking on my own prompts at all. I think they're fun, actually. More than that, they're useful because any increased activity on my thread bumps up the number of eyeballs looking at my prompt, especially on flatmeme. I've had threads bounce all over the place and I still ended up getting great fills on those prompts waaaay past the normal prompt shelf life because the 'hijacking' kept my thread alive.
I have, however, had other people come into my threads to tsk at other anons for supposedly derailing it. That annoyed me a little. The way I figure it, if the OP has a problem with the drift of conversation, it's up to the OP to speak up if they even want to.
Tying to police the behavior of other people on an anon meme is worse than useless, imo. If you feel aggravated that people are hijacking your prompts, then you can totally try to nudge the conversation back in your desired direction. Maybe they'll listen. More likely, I think, they'll shut up and your thread will die.
The most likely outcome of trying to institute a 'no derailing' culture will be a chilling effect on the meme as a whole. And that's not worth it.

I've had threads bounce all over the place and I still ended up getting great fills on those prompts waaaay past the normal prompt shelf life because the 'hijacking' kept my thread alive.
I have, however, had other people come into my threads to tsk at other anons for supposedly derailing it. That annoyed me a little. The way I figure it, if the OP has a problem with the drift of conversation, it's up to the OP to speak up if they even want to.
Tying to police the behavior of other people on an anon meme is worse than useless, imo. If you feel aggravated that people are hijacking your prompts, then you can totally try to nudge the conversation back in your desired direction. Maybe they'll listen. More likely, I think, they'll shut up and your thread will die.
The most likely outcome of trying to institute a 'no derailing' culture will be a chilling effect on the meme as a whole. And that's not worth it.

And letting the author know it wasn't what you expected? Rarely necessary. Unless it's in the context of "I never expected something this awesome!!!"

(And should anyone decide to post a second fill to the prompt, then at least your story will be contained under the first chapter you posted.)

I'm curious, where do you see the differences between his characterization in the comics and the MCU? In your own stories, do you sometimes let them bleed into each other, or use the comics as a helping guideline when you're not sure how Matt would likely react in a given situation? Do you have a version of Matt you prefer?

There are so many versions of Matt in the comics that it is easy to come up with different reactions all the time. For example, Waid's Murdock is so different than Miller's Murdock.
I think the root of his personality remains mostly the same though. He has a temper. He has depressive/manic episodes. He needs Foggy to keep him grounded. No relationship ever ends well. He is self sacrificing. And he loves being Daredevil. (and sometimes he is a complete ass, lol)

In comics, idk even, but as far as I write it in fanfic, his 'world on fire' thing was a really bad metaphor--basically, he perceives where objects are in a room, roughly what shape they are (eg he might confuse a tablet with a cover and a slim book), can hear electronics/even small noises, can tell where his body is in relation to other things, has a very strong sense of smell/taste/touch, etc. Like a lot of information that he gets is through the 'radar' sense, which as far as I can tell is a combination of insanely wide-range propriocetpion and echolocation. He's definitely still no-light-perception blind, though. There's lots he doesn't pick up on (subtler facial expressions, most facial expressions unless he's focusing a LOT on the person, colors of things, patterns/print, most printed words, pictures etc on a computer, lights, and so on).

Ehhhhh, that Matt/Karen picture. I can't help it, I just don't ship them. And I'm kind of side-eyeing the scenario, too.
It looks like Karen's trying to teach Matt how to play pool, and yeah, girl is probably enjoying it, but like. There is NO WAY that Matt Murdock, Stick's protégé, doesn't know how to play pool like a shark. So it feels a bit weird? Like Matt's pulling one over on Karen. I don't know, maybe the way they handle it will make me feel less weird about it.
(I think it's the deception leading to full body contact thing that bothers me. It's something I don't have problems with in fic, because that's fantasy that we control, but when it's portrayed in canon? Ehhhhhh. It makes me uncomfortable. Then again, it might just be me not liking that pairing. I'll own my biases.)

To the person (mostly likely, but it could persons) who posted all those lovely Foggy prompts - him having grown up in witness protection, or as a kidnapped child, etc. - you are my hero and I love you. It's nice to know I'm not the only who just wants a million headcanons of different Foggy backstories.

i had a dream last night that season two had dropped way early and in one of the scenes the ghost of mrs cardenas was sitting down w/ karen and she was all like "you have powers, don't you?" and karen got all shifty but eventually said "ever since the meteors hit hell's kitchen i've been able to smell diamonds in the floor. it gets so overwhelming that i have to excuse myself." and that's where it ends...... apparently dream-me has some weird expectations for the new season.
