Direction of the Meme

(Anonymous) 2015-12-15 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Guys, I miss the fluff. Where's the happy/pining/gooeyness at? I crave it so.

Who do I have to bribe to get some vanilla back in this kinkmeme?

(and I don't mean non-explicit stuff. bring on the explicitness, yes please. I just want things with happy endings. or endings, period.)

Amen.

Am posting my own ace! prompt that no one will reply to, just for you. Because it is also vanilla.

I'm very new to this meme and i'm in fact the Ace!OP from the previous post, but I second your request! (Though not as much the explicit part, but I know how to scroll)

Re: Direction of the Meme

(Anonymous) 2015-12-15 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
As another anon who knows how to scroll past explicit content: I'm so sorry you joined us in the middle of a million explicit slave/non-con prompts and fills. And the occasional Hamilton thing that I don't follow mostly because I'm not familiar with the play. I don't know that I'd think it was worth commenting, if I'd started on this round. It's almost not worth scrolling anymore as it is.

It's not like there aren't vanilla prompts thrown in there occasionally too, though. It's just that nobody's responding to them. Feel free to respond yourself, anon! You don't have to post a prompt or a fill; sometimes there's loads of discussion that's fun to read that isn't quite either. And then the rest of us vanilla (including non-explicit, in my case) lovers will have fun reading (and maybe even replying to) your posts!

Please?

DA

I normally LOVE badwrongshit power imbalance stuff, and even I wish there was more variety and more pining/fluffy staple stuff

tragically I'm terrible at writing anything other than angsty porn but maybe I'll do more prompts

I still maintain that the slave fics are being filled by like... two people. Maybe three, lol.

Like, it seemed a couple posts back there were a lot of matt/fisk/vanessa shippers on this meme, but in reality there were only like... 5 people who were really active who were doing all the prompting and filling for that pairing.

A lot of people have moved on from the fandom.

AYRT: I'm not denying that it's probably just a few people who are filling those prompts. It's just that they're the only ones talking, right now. I wouldn't even mind all that much, except that everyone who *is* talking is fascinated by Opposite!Matt, and bleh.

And I think people may wander back, depending upon how well Season Two of Daredevil does. That's just what people in general *do*.

(How popular is the Jessica Jones post right now? I haven't finished the season yet, so I haven't really ventured over there. I'm just curious. It doesn't look like it has all that many comments...)

The Jessica Jones post is sort of... meh? I wish it was more active though. I'm betting on people slowly finding it as we approach end of month, since I assume a lot of people are still watching the show. (I hope!)

"opposite!matt"?

Re: Direction of the Meme

(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 03:31 am (UTC)(link)
Opposite-of-Ipad-Matt. The one that's all proud of being an elite slave. Just bleh. (It's also Opposite-of-canon-Matt, since one of the points of the show is that he doesn't just succumb to inevitable evil.) It makes me depressed just scrolling past.

Yeah, the meme has shed people, but I don't think it shed most of them completely? For many, it might just be the difference between checking it multiple times a day to only once a week or so.

But the thing is, people go where the content they like is. And if they swing by but see that the content here isn't to their tastes, then they'll shrug and ex out of the tab. That's more likely to happen if the meme is being dominated by a specific, niche kink. There is NOTHING WRONG with those prompts getting enthusiastic fills, but when they're the only 'voice' on the meme, it feels a bit unbalanced.

I really think if we got more general fillers here that the meme would pick back up. You need to bring in the people who write before you can attract the people who comment, even if it's just for mini-fills. Or another way to get activity might be to encourage the authors who have abandoned their fills to finish them.

Yeah, I think I'd probably flip a table if the meme was suddenly dominated by stuff that makes me want to NOPE right off the planet, like beastiality. Or adult baby stuff. *shudders*

Would be nice to get more comments on the fills. It sucks to write something and then.. meh nothing.

Sure! I'm a bit of newbie though so do you mean here or on the prompts or???

Re: Direction of the Meme

(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)
AYRT: Either one! Well, I meant on the prompts--I would love it if someone actually posted almost any kind of reply to my Ed the Electrician prompt (which is here: http://daredevilkink.dreamwidth.org/6237.html?thread=11925597#cmt11925597 ), for instance-- but posting here is great, too.

I spam the off-topic/discussion post with meta sometimes, and nobody ever seems to mind. Or you could recommend something (see http://daredevilkink.dreamwidth.org/1097.html?thread=880201 ), or chip in on where and what you think Matt and Foggy did for undergrad ( https://daredevilkink.dreamwidth.org/1097.html?thread=10799177 ).

I think lots of people retreat here when they aren't particularly interested in whatever's happening over on the open round. And by lots of people, I mean all the people I know personally who hang out around here. Which would be, uh, me.

Haha, meanwhile I'm sad because there's not enough dirtybadwrong that's to my tastes.

I feel like in general, fluff is easier to come by because it's on a lot of non-kink-meme platforms like tumblr. OTOH super kinky porn is understandably more limited to anonymous places. Not that this is really related to the OP - if you want more fluff then go for it! - but yeah.

Re: Direction of the Meme

(Anonymous) 2015-12-15 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Which just goes to show:
Absolutely everyone on the kinkmeme is digging through trash for their treasure. The flip side of YKINMK: there's an awful lot of NMK out there.

...and tumblr doesn't really have a good mechanism for requesting certain fics from the world in general, does it? Nor does it enable discussion the same way this forum does. (I don't think. I don't have a tumblr account, so for all I know, there's stuff I'm missing.) There's a reason us vanilla lovers are hanging around a *kinkmeme*, okay?

Re: Direction of the Meme

(Anonymous) 2015-12-15 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
SA: Or at least *this* vanilla lover. I don't mean to speak for anyone other than myself.

AYRT

Yep, agree 100%. I just didn't really like the wording in the OP, but I could be reading too much into it.

You can request stuff from specific authors as asks if they're taking prompts. I won't get into a discussion about tumblr's functionality (i.e. what functionality?) but as the main fandom gathering point right now, it's where you get the most mainstream stuff - and imo, vanilla is pretty mainstream right now.

Re: Direction of the Meme

(Anonymous) 2015-12-16 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I am a tumblr user and I think it's one of the worst sites to host fic on. I can't read fic on there, loads of users use tiny font and clashing backgrounds, zooming can increase the background over the foreground and displaces the text box; And it just doesn't promote communication in a good way. Especially now the reply function has gone.

I know for a lot of people it's the first port of call for fic requests but I just haven't figured out how to get involved there when it's so unfriendly to readers who don't follow via dashboard.

Re: Direction of the Meme

(Anonymous) 2015-12-17 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
Hard same. I mean, there is vanilla and non slave fic that is being written. There's that raccoon fic which is cute and that Foggy being depressed fill and that Hamilton fill is still truckin along and that one where Matt liked being degraded is posting continuously on ao3 but I think those are all sort of off the beaten path and those slave fic fills are crowding out flatmeme at the moment. When I went off flatmeme for the first time in a week I finally noticed how many prompts just weren't getting responses at all.

We also have to keep in mind though that a lot of writers are in college and are currently having finals, preparing for finals, or moving back home. 18-early twenties is a really big fandom demographic. I personally just graduated college today (!) and I know other people are focused on school as well. Plus there are holiday exchanges like Yuletide and the daredevil secret Santa exchange. People are putting their time and energy into writing for those because the due dates are in a few days. Also, nanowrimo just wrapped up two and a half weeks ago which pulled people away also I'm sure. Plus, Christmas time people have a lot to think about in terms of getting together with their families, preparing for the holidays, etc.

Basically there are a lot of factors contributing to the meme not being as varied as it could be right now. It will pick back up though I am sure :)

Personally I have like five WIP now that have a significant number of subscribers and three of them are official km prompts while two of them are things I personally prompted and got good responses to so I decided to write them myself. So my fills and prompts at the moment are completely gone from the meme because of school and works in progress lol

This is a good point.

And re: the Secret Santa, things may be slow now, but over the holidays those fics are all going to drop and liven things up a bit too.

Good point. I've been feeling sad that everything seems so slow. But- I'll keep that in mind and hope that the holidays get filled with an influx of more fic!
