Discussion/Off-Topic Post #1

THIS POST IS NOW CLOSED.

Please head over to Discussion Post #2!

So I've noticed there seem to be more newbies on the meme lately, and that people are starting to get a bit fatigued by how concentrated some of the types of prompts have become in certain areas and frustrated that things have slowed down.

We were previously discussing maybe an abandoned fills challenge of some kind, but that was problematic for a bunch of reasons.

However, would anyone be interested in a challenge that incorporates the previous prompt posts MVPs? The prompts that started enormous amounts of conversation or multiple abandoned fills or mini-fills but never went anywhere?

I'm thinking that after the holidays are done and the Secret Santa wraps up, a Nostalgia Challenge might be fun and help encourage the new writers to dive into older prompt posts, but also older writers to get involved again.

It would work like this: Either I would go back (in collaboration with anyone else who wants to help) or I would accept nominations for one prompt from each post up to this point that generated the most interest and conversation but not lengty, complete fills. And then there would be eight prompts that people could choose from to work on as part of the challenge.

Then, the challenge would be for writers to do something with those prompts. We could maybe ask people to round robin them the way people are writing the slavery prompts right now and work on a set of stories as a group, or we could even do it like a Big Bang if there is at least one fan artist willing to take on each prompt to inspire potential writers. And we could open the conversation back up on those prompts by reposting them on the Challenge post.

Sort of a way to celebrate the best of this meme's past, and also have some fun collaborating with one another.

What does everyone think of that? Is there any other ways I could encourage more people to participate?

^^ I didn't title this accidentally, so feel free to title it in your replies for peoples using the flat meme view.

This sounds incredibly awesome.

2016 Nostalgia Challenge!

OP here.

OR... OR....

I just was talking to someone else and they made a brilliant suggestion. What if we set out a list of categories (15-30 of them, let's say) and asked for nominations for the favourite prompt with no complete fill in each category, or curated and provided a list of nominations in each category and then had people vote on one.

And then did a first-come, first-serve ficfest where people could claim a prompt with only one author per prompt the first time around, and then multiple fills allowed. And everyone could cheerlead the authors in the category they're interested in. That way, guaranteed there would be something for everyone.

Categories could be things like: AU, Fusion, MCU Crossover, Comic Book Fusion, Non-MCU Crossover, Character Backstory, PWP or Smut, Darkfic, Romance Trope, Villain-Centric, Polyamory, Hurt/Comfort, 5+1, etc.

It would encourage everyone, not just the writers who want involved, to dig through the meme and nominate their faves, repost them, and bring certain categories of fic to the forefront.

It would also help people sort through all those old prompts and highlight ones they might be interested in for them in case they find the delicious account confusing.

I already want to sign up for that. And all related ideas. There are some stellar prompts that are now part of a quite intimidating backlog for a newb to trawl through, and we should absolutely promote some of them.

OP saying that is exactly what I was thinking. Glad to see other people agree.

I know I checked into Avengerkink and then checked out cuz i thought no way would I find the prompts I was interested in buried there.

Yeah I'm pumped for this! Filling for old prompt posts is hard now because there is starting to be so much so yeah. Definitely. As long as we can get whump in that category too ;)

OP... I was thinking categories that are general like crossovers, angst and whump, AUs or smut. But also maybe some DD specific ones like prompts about Matt's childhood, college prompts or prompts about about Ableism and Disability. Plus maybe categories focusing on characters like the villains or the women of the show.

Just to make sure the challenge calls attention to the diversity of prompts here and that everyone can find one they love.

There's also been talk lately of trends coming and going, and even glancing at post #1 today reminded me that there were some prompts early on that attracted a lot of interest but then just got forgotten about as the prompting gained speed and trends changed.

I think this can be a good opportunity to bring in other characters too like more writing about Karen and Claire!!!!!! There aren't so many of those nowadays. I kinda get sidetracked bc I love him so much and I just like writing for him (and punishing him) but I read stories about Karen and Claire there just aren't many out there.

OP again. Basically, I want a challenge that encourages fills but is also fun for the lurkers and readers to participate in too and encourages them to actively boost prompts they like, comment and cheer the writers on.

I think even the nominating process amd curating the list of final prompts in the challenge could be a fun way to celebrate the massive collection of prompts we've amassed (over 28,000 of them!), many of which are funny, weird, creative or original and are sort of buried waiting to be sifted through for gold and treasure.

When S2 comes, especially, people really won't care about older prompts and so we should try and remind people of them and inspire those of us here now as much as possible before then.

That's my thinking anyway.
