Frank/Karen - Frank is a sweet drunk
(Anonymous) 2016-06-20 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)But drunk Frank turns out to be mostly a cuddly, dopey puppy who sprawls on her couch and wants to pet her hair and earnestly tell her how nice she is to him when she gets him a glass of water.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-13 01:39 am (UTC)(link)She'd never call the past relationships she's been in abusive. She's too much like Frank, what she'd went through was nothing compared to others and claiming that title felt like an insult to people with real histories. Still. There are part of her past that will always soak into the edges of her present, warp and change them into something else, and that's why she doesn't unlatch the chain to her door.
"Frank?" Her long fingers rest lightly on the door frame and even when she identifies him she isn't rushing to undo the latch. It's not shutting him out but it's not an invitation. What she has with Frank, the slow burning relationship they've been building, t's always been sincere and brutally honest, but it's also been tender and she'd rather not have that change. She doesn't want her opinions of him to be changed by how he might be after a little too much.
"Karen." He mumbles the word out, a slight slur of her name that could just as easily have been from the purple swelling on his bottom lip. She almost smiles then. Has she ever seen him without a bruise somewhere coloring his rough face? "...Can I come in?"
"It's late." She does smile a little then for him. It's wary, meant to disarm him for when she gives her no. She wonders if his fist will leave a mark on the door when he pounds against it in frustration. She lost her last deposit that way, but she knows Frank would fix it when he's sober. "You should get home, alright? I could call you a cab..."
Frank nods a little, and there's respect in his eyes. Even drunk there's an understanding of boundaries and rules and lines he shouldn't cross. "You're right, M'sorry. Just was thinking about you a lot. It was a bullshit move."
"Did you walk all the way here?" She knows wherever Frank had set up it wasn't exactly a short walk to her apartment. "Drunk?"
He shakes his head, rubbing a hand over his face. "Not all the way. Was at a bar. I was going to come first but ended up stopping for some courage."
"Courage for one of the bravest men know." She leans against the wall and watches him through the crack of her door.
"Need it to talk to a woman like you. You see through everything. I'll come back later, if that's ok."
Seeing through everything. Did she see through Frank? Maybe. She's never believed what everyone had thought of him. She's never given up on him despite what she'd told him, and now here they were, on the cusp of something neither one would put a name to.
"My neighbors will talk." She finally says, closing the door so that she can slide the chain loose. "Lisa in 5b could write the gossip column at work... Come in."
Frank looks surprised to be walking in, but he doesn't ask if she's sure. Maybe he doesn't want to risk the answer. She ends up taking his hand, curling her fingers around his scabbed over knuckles to pull him to the couch. If he;s going to be here then she's going to be the one deciding on their interactions. If she makes the first moves he can't force her into anything.
He shuffles his way to the couch and he drops down like a sack of bricks, snorting at himself. When she sits down with a little more poise she's surprised when his head is suddenly on her shoulder. He hasn't let go of her hand and he seems to be staring at it, his callused thumb tracing a slow circle over her knuckle. "You didn't have to let me in, but you did." He seems almost in awe of that, squeezing her hand warmly. "You're amazing."
"Amazing huh?" She starts to smile then nearly squeaks when his arms are around her. They've hugged, they've held each other, even exchanged a few frantic, hesitant kisses, chasing the taste of each other like they're sure the other will disappear into smoke. But she's never felt like he's squishing her... cuddling her?
It's definitely cuddling. There's no denying it with how his head nuzzles against her shoulder, the quiet groan he makes. She'd had a dog when she was young, Rascal, a giant mutt that thought it was a delicate lapdog. It'd made the same noises when it climbed onto her for petting.
"Amazing." Frank repeats the word with an earnest seriousness that only the inebriated can, awe touching his tone. It makes her feel silly, but powerful. "You smell so good, you know? This city smells like shit, but you always smell good. How do you even do that?" He shifts down on the couch and his head ends up in her lap.
"I uh, don't know." She looks down at him and she can't help the fondness in her tone. This isn't yelling, snapping at her or bickering. This is sweet. This is the pleasantly tipsy aura that she gains with Foggy and Matt when they go to drinks, or maybe a little further, but it's sweet and almost innocent. It's a side of Frank she's always suspected existed, has seen peeks of, but was hard to access.
She loves it. Her hand rests lightly on his scalp and she laughs when dragging her nails against it gets another groan. She pictures him kicking his leg out like rascal used to do, but it just twitches. Close enough.
"Good boy?"
He laughs with her at that, genuine but so rough from out of use. "Can't help it. Always liked getting my hair touched."
"Who doesn't?"
That's how his hands end up in her hair. Clumsy from drink but still gentle, fingers threading through it as he slurs out a little how soft it is. How he can't believe how nice she is to let him touch it. "Can't believe you let me in when I'm a fucking mess. You're too nice. Too nice to me."
"Someone has to be." She tells him when she puts a glass of water in his hands and wonders if there's enough coffee left in her canister to make him some as black and bitter as he likes it in the morning. She's already decided she'll let him sleep it off here.
