I feel like once a female character has been brutal enough towards other women, Frank can torture them rather than just shoot them in the head--like in the Slavers arc of MAX. Though he's fine shooting female criminals/rapists/etc.

(And omfg, the 'junkie not girl' thing made me want to kill people. Like holy shit.)

DA

There was one female victim of Netflix!Punisher being briefly shown on a police file early on. But yeah, generally speaking Comics!Frank morality or lack thereof depends on the writer. Rucka's Punisher isn't Ennis' isn't Dixons isn't Fractions, and so on.

(when did the "junkie not girl" thing happen? Was it Ennis or someone else (though Ennis was not always 100% consistent, either. I am still wondering whether the way Frank treated the male rape victim in Barracuda in contrast to the woman from Slavers was supposed to intentionally characterize him as a hypocrite or was just Ennis being Ennis, whose track-record on that I remember as not good).

I can make it work in my head, in that I think it makes some sense for frank to have more fucked-up double standards for victims than for criminals, but yeah, that whole interaction in Barracuda was still some bullshit.

The human-shield-junkie thing was not Ennis' Max. Idk who it was
I dont think Ennis has enough self awareness to try some commentary on toxic masculinity.

The only thing i can think of is that the guy mentioned that he was there on illegal (drug related?) business dealings that werent prostitution. but thats not very much to work with (despite Frank's er forceful anti-drug stance) The closest situations i can recall with women were trafficked women. Even the honeytrap was alone in a snowy forest full of dead guys.
Ennis' women were usually on extreme ends of the 'victim-villain' scale

Barracuda jn general was wack.

DA-from-above

Yeah, having read some of Ennis' other output I don't think he was trying to make a point. It wouldn't be out of character for Frank to have that sort of double-standard, imo, but I don't think he was going for that.

Imo Barracuda was the worst arc in Ennis' MAX run in general. Nearly all other arcs had some redeeming scenes but I can't think of a single thing I liked about Barracuda.

It's a shame, so far Ennis is the best i've read, but it could have been something more if he wasnt so in love with Frank.

Ditto. And then he (and that ponytailed eyepatch guy) comes back like three more times apiece while characters like Jenny Cesare get one arc before totally permanent no backsies dying? Fuck that

DA Girls in white Dresses was good. It was in the max run, but by Hurwitz. Ennis did all before that series. If you really want to see his take on female characters in the MAX run he's really good at analyzing the crazy chick in "Welcome to the Bayou". It's the last series in the 75 issue run. He really calculated the girl.

Honestly, I liked them al. I don't think I have a least favorite yet, but Rucka, Edmondson, and Aaron were my favorite.

SA oh I picked up the new punisher series today too. Becky Cloonan (she did Gotham academy) wrote It, and Steve Dillion once again is back for the art work...can't say that makes me happy about the art.

Just took a peek at the relevant issues again.

In The Slavers the woman tells him she's an illegal immigrant and will be deported if she goes to the police. He literally says, "Too bad" and continues walking away. It's only when she tells him about the murdered baby that he shows interest. He doesnt really comfort her

In Widowmaker, Frank repeatedly tells the bait girl to wait at the crime scene. She wears his coat (bc its snowing and she's in a mini and halter top) but we aren't shown the actual scene where he gives it to her. He lets her come with him, but later tells us that he was playing along bc her story was fishy.
He gives her his coat, but otherwise does not comfort her. He doesnt offer any assistance when theyre walking a mile in the snow (probably in heels)

In Barracuda he tells the male victim to wait for the cops or the feds before leaving him. The narration tells us that 'if a guy's that desperate to avoid the cops, i usually let them have him'. He does not offer comfort at the scene. Later he gets information out of the man over lunch (that he presumably bought) then leaves when the man has nothing more to offer, telling the audience that he 'can only take so much whining'

Conclusion: Ennis' Frank is not particularly sympathetic to victims. He is just there for the criminals. He exhibits more ... Something in The Slavers and with Galinka, but those were both unusual circumstances involving children. He was a bit harsher with the male victim, but he doesnt treat female victims much better.
He's probably not the best version to work off of for this prompt, unless your victim is a child or has information on crimes involving children

Also OP dont be afraid to tell us to take it to the discussion page if we get too tangential. I could discuss how each creator draws/writes women till long after it's ceased being relevant

OP here, and the discussion is fine! I haven't read as much Punisher as I would like, so it's cool to hear which ones are good. I am curious if there's much record of how he interacts with heroines though. Most of the discussion has been on victims and villains, but what about when he is working with them, like a woman Daredevil?

This seems consistant with another Ennis run where Joan the Mouse asks Frank why he makes bullets go at the nasty men and Frank responds that he hates them (the nasty men) Joan is surprised bc she thought Frank would say that he wants to make a better world for people who arent nasty men.
If frank had a response, it's not readily available in his quote section
