(Anonymous) 2016-12-12 12:30 am (UTC)(link)"Why do you keep staring at me?" Maria asked from her hospital bed. She stared at the girl, and then back to the stark white hospital wall. It was the most depressing place in the world, really.
"I found out about your family," she admitted, quiet. "I'm sorry, Maria."
Maria's head snapped forward.
"How?" she demanded, making the girl flinch.
"I did some investigating," Karen said softly. "I didn't mean to. I just wanted to find out more about you, and what you've been through. I needed to understand why you...do what you do."
Maria sat up in bed.
"Forget about whatever you learned," she demanded. "I want you to get rid of any preconcieved notion you have about me. It doesn't matter. It never mattered."
"But..."
"Please leave, Miss Page."
Later, Maria's consultation with Mr. Murdock made her question whether Karen page really was the one with the darkest secrets attached to her. There was something about the blind man that was uncomfortably familiar. Deep inside of her, she realized that something was strange, but she wasn't ready to confront what she already knew.
"We've been having issues with the jury selection," Murdock admitted.
"People aren't sure if I'm a killer or a hero," she laughed. "And it's very likely that women are the ones singing my praises, right?"
He didn't reply.
"Yeah, I get it," she admitted. "This trial isn't going to go well for you, Murdock. It's not going to go well for any of you. You would be doing the best to just step out. Nobody would blame you for that -- well, except maybe yourself."
"I Know what happened to you, Maria," he said, in a deep concerned tone that would be heartbreaking to most. Of course, Maria Castle had stopped having a heart years before. "I know what you've been through, and we are going to work at finding sympathy in our jury."
"Sympathy for what?" she asked.
"Sympathy for youe situation," he said, leaning close and staring at her with unseeing eyes. "You lost everyone important to you in one moment, after years of service in the military."
This enraged her.
"Don't you dare talk to me about PTSD," she snapped. "I served for a few years, went overseas and yeah, I saw some difficult things -- but I do not have PTSD."
"How do you know that you don't have PTSD?" Murdock asked, reaching over and touching her hand. Maria pulled herself away from him and stared. He was reckless, knowing exactly what she was capable of. He had seen the bodies, even if he physically couldn't 'see' the pictures, and yet here he was. "It's very possible that the deaths of your family..."
"I know that I don't have PTSD because my husband had PTSD," she said, quietly. Her eyes widened as two-and-two came together in her mind. Oh, she had to confront it now. "Yet, I told you all about my husband's pain before, didn't I?"
He froze. She could imagine that she heard his heartbeat. It thudded in his chest.
"I don't know what you're..."
This made Maria laugh.
"You know," she said, "that for a lawyer, you are a terrible liar. I know who you are and what you do. Don't worry about it, because I'm going to keep that a secret. But I don't want any lousy PTSD defense. I'm not traumatized. I'm dead."
He looked at her for a long moment with his unseeing eyes, and then he ran. Maria had to laugh at that. He ran away from her, like he had obviously done to so many things in his life. She didn't say anything, either. She just accepted it.
