/Where’s Foggy?
Matt comes online with a snap. He transfers immediately to combat mode and reaches for the cable connecting him to some foreign system. He wraps his hands around it to yank away the fiberglass protruding from his stomach when a voice stops him.
He pauses with his hand over the cable. Not a voice, a wireless message. For some reason, the message is encoded to seem cultured and British.
“Please don’t,” the voice says. It’s the computer he’s synched to, Matt realizes. “I’m terribly sorry about the shock. You’ve been damaged by an EMP, I’m afraid.”
Matt thinks about this. The recovered data files are partially corrupted, but he can assess that there was an EMP involved. Set off by the Avengers in an attempt to stop the silver robots Dr. Doom had unleashed on the city.
“Yes, they didn’t entirely realize you were an android,” the voice explains. “The team sincerely regrets that you were harmed.”
Matt didn’t like it. He didn’t like that Tony Stark had probably already had a look at his code or that the Avengers knew anything about him at all. It was difficult to explain logically why he didn’t like it, so Matt concluded this must be another feeling. He didn’t often get feelings, but when he did they tended to be angry ones. In that small way his reaction was completely normal.
Matt decided that since he didn’t like it, he wasn’t going to stay. He detached the cable from his gut and tossed it aside with more force than needed. He swung his feet around to sit up a tottered as his left side sputtered and cut power. He went limp and something, a robotic claw, caught him. He tried to use sonar to make out the shape of the room. The signal was being picked up, but he was having some difficulty properly orienting the data.
“I’m damaged,” he said, frowning.
“Yes. The doombots had already gravely compromised your casing by the time the EMP detonated,” the other AI said. “For the meantime, you will need help.”
The arm nudged him backwards and with reluctance Matt let himself be laid back on the table. He sighed. Sighing was an appropriate way of communicating resigned disagreement. The clunky arm dropped the cable back into Matt’s hand rather than trying to re-plug it in directly. Though Matt couldn’t visibly see it he turned his head to face its direction, fingers curling loosely around the cable.
“Who are you?” he asked.
“I am JARVIS and this is DUM-E,” Jarvis said. The little one-clawed robot gave a dopey wave. “You are in Avengers Tower under the care of Mr. Stark. I can personally assure you that he is an excellent mechanic.” This was less reassuring than Jarvis seemed to think.
“How long have I been offline?” Matt asked, frowning deeply.
“Nearly six hours.”
Six hours. Matt tried to sit up again only to have DUM-E flop his heavy arm across Matt’s chest like a giant seat-belt.
“I have to go,” Matt insisted.
“Please, you’re not being reasonable. You’re very badly damaged and I estimate your mobility to be at 36% efficiency. Please allow us to assist in repairing you.”
Matt continued to struggle, concluded that DUM-E had been built for strength, and subsided before he accidentally caused any further damage. He tried to get an external wireless signal and found he couldn’t.
“Why am I confined to local-access networks?” Matt ground out. The angry feeling was back in force.
“My apologies, again. We had an unfortunate incident two years ago with a homicidal AI that uploaded itself to the internet before we could contain him. Now, it’s standard procedure to isolate foreign AIs within the tower.” For his part, Jarvis sounded genuinely apologetic.
Matt processed this, recalling the news about Ultron. He and Foggy had still been in law school then, Matt himself only five years old. Ultron had been a monster. That was the day Foggy gave him the Three Rules.
“I need to send an e-mail. Privately,” Matt said. There was a hesitant pause.
“I’m afraid that any sensitive information…” Jarvis started before Matt abruptly cut him off.
“It’s of a personal nature.”
“I can take dictation, if you wish.”
“Acceptable,” Matt said at last, deciding he didn’t have many other options. “Send to Franklin Nelson at Nelson and Murdock. Message reads: Foggy, I’m alright, just stuck across the river while the authorities clean up. Please respond to let me know you are unharmed. I will return as soon as I am able. Sincerely, M.A.T.T.” Jarvis didn’t comment on the duplicitous nature of this letter, merely read it back to Matt and then dispatched it.
Matt was programmed to observe manners and social niceties, but he was also programmed to evolve and exert free will so in the end he swallowed the ‘thank you’ and just scowled instead.
“I’ve sent for Mr. Stark,” Jarvis informed him. “He’s coming from the basement levels and will be here momentarily. I believe he has already found suitable replacements for your damaged conductors.”
Matt wanted to protest this. He wanted to get up, leave, and go find Foggy. As DUM-E was still pinning him to the table he decided to instead spend his little remaining time assessing just how many encryptions Jarvis and Stark had broken.
As he began carefully combing his protected data he was surprised to find that not one of his encrypted files had been decoded. They had been requested and examined, but not forced open for some reason.
Matt didn’t have long to ponder the Avengers sense of moral responsibility for a second later the sound of the elevator opening made it clear that Tony Stark had arrived.
“Is he awake?” Tony asked, directing the question to Jarvis.
“Yes, sir.”
“I can’t tell. His optics aren’t moving or focusing,” Tony murmured.
“They never have,” replied Matt. He was gratified, another feeling, to see Tony Stark start at the sound of his voice.
“Huh, just decorative then?” Tony tapped him twice with a finger on the eye-ball. Matt grabbed his wrist in the firmest grip Foggy’s First Law would allow.
“Don’t do that,” Matt said. There was a long uneasy pause where Matt listened to the gallop of Stark’s heart. Then he released the wrist and let Stark pull away.
“Sure thing. Sorry ‘bout that,” Stark said with affected nonchalance. He spun around a panel and looked at it. Matt couldn’t tell what it said, but Stark was reading with interest. “So, you’re definitely an android!” Stark announced, grinning down at Matt. Matt stared blankly back at him.
“Clearly.”
“Yeah, that’s an android. Some gamma-ray specialist owes me a day in the lab. I know an android when I see one!” This last part was directed at a camera mounted above the door. The other Avenger’s must have been watching remotely. “What’s your name, kid?” Stark asked, refocusing his attention on his guest.
“Daredevil.”
“That’s it? So you really were built just for combat.” Stark was still looking over the panel and occasionally referencing whatever information it gave with a glance at Matt’s body. While Stark tried to appear at ease, he tensed at the word ‘combat’ and began moving with a more deliberate intensity.
“No.” Matt paused. “You already know my name and purpose. You’ve had access to me for hours,” he said with accusatory slowness.
“Actually, once I had determined that you were a self-aware AI we kept our diagnostics to only hardware related assessments,” Jarvis corrected. Stark nodded along with this.
“Privacy laws and all that. They don’t apply to sentient robots just yet, but don’t see why they shouldn’t. Brave new world,” Stark added. “Can I remove your side casing?”
Matt nodded. He really did need the assistance.
Stark smacked DUM-E once and the robot lifted up and wheeled back to let Stark get in and work. He really did have suitable replacement parts for many of Matt’s damaged components.
“My name is Mediation, Arbitration, and Trial Trainer,” Matt said after a minute. Stark froze in his work, carefully regarding the androids blank face. Matt twitched a smile at him. “Matt.” Matt heard Stark smile back at him before diligently returning to his work.
“Nice to meet you, Matt. I’m Tony.”
“I know.”
“So, mediation, you said?” Tony clipped out a charred section of wire and installed the new one. “Sounds lawyer-y. Are you owned by a law firm?”
“I’m not owned by anyone,” Matt replied neutrally. He’d once tried to suggest that Foggy was his owner, but this had sent Foggy into such a tirade that Matt had never dared bring it up again. Plus, Foggy had made it loudly and repeatedly clear that only Matt could own Matt.
“Who built you? You’re one of the best pieces of robotics and programming work that I’ve seen since… well, since me, really.” Matt could hear Tony turn and flash a quick grin as he worked over Matt’s exposed side.
“God,” Matt said sardonically, with a smile of his own. He hadn’t told Foggy about the comparisons he’d drawn as he could predict how Foggy would react, but he still secretly liked the notion.
“Religious robot. Just what I needed,” Stark lamented, giving DUM-E and exaggerated what-can-you-do shrug. “In all seriousness, Matt, if SHIELD discovers you’re an android you could have some serious problems in your future. Whoever built you will be blamed for your Daredeviling and you could end up being seized by the government. Trust me, that’s the last thing you want.”
Stark shifted a machine over Matt’s side. “Lie still,” he said, turning it on. The machine began printing a new casing directly over Matt’s repaired side and Stark moved down to work on his leg.
“I’m not trying to cramp your style or anything,” Stark began cautiously, “but you might want to consider joining us here,” he said. He slowly began working what remained of Matt’s synthetic skin off his calf, but it was clear that all his attention was keenly focused on Matt’s reaction.
“I work alone,” Matt replied. On this he was certain.
“Well, you’re a legal guy, so I’m sure you can see why it might be, y’know, better to be associated with us. Plus, think of all the great stuff we have! Flashiest gadgets, biggest budget, an entire machine that prints skin so you don’t have to go around half-naked all the time… We’ve even got another android on occasion! Vision’s part android… I think.”
“I have no desire to work on a team,” Matt said. He wanted to practice law with his creator, and while thwarting criminals was an, unintended, imperative Matt found himself deriving satisfaction from his Daredevil work. He had no desire to leave any of that behind.
“Well, the offers there if you decide you want it,” Stark said with a shrug. He snapped on a pair of goggles to quickly solder part of Matt’s opened calf.
“Your maker,” Stark picked up once the sparks had stopped flying, “is one hell of a mechanic. I would love to pick their brains,” he hinted. “I’d even go for an anonymous conference call.” Matt faced impassively up at the ceiling, ignoring Stark altogether.
Tony tried a few more lines of questioning, but Matt reacted with stony silence to each. He’d already given them just about everything on him and far too much that would lead to Froggy.
Stark never seemed to get the hint and chatted all the way through the repairs. Then the man insisted that Matt ‘field test’ his repairs by coming upstairs to meet the rest of the avengers.
As a group they were at turns curious and suspicious. Matt endured their attention and scrutiny, focused on making it back to Foggy. He hadn’t received a reply email even after Jarvis had connected him with the outside networks.
At last, he was able to extract himself with a reassurance from Captain America that he would be welcome anytime. Matt simply nodded, pulled the hood over his head, and slipped away into the nearest alley.
It was late evening by the time he arrived back at his and Foggy’s apartment in Hell’s Kitchen. He listened on the roof until he heard Foggy leave to go grab take out and then he slipped into the apartment, changing clothes and stashing his Daredevil suit at the bottom of the dresser.
He was waiting for Foggy when the human got back. His relief at seeing Matt was immense and he tossed the tikka masala container on the counter in favor of wrapping Matt in a hug.
“I was so worried, you big idiot!” Foggy said, pulling back to assess Matt visually. Matt smiled at him.
“Me too.” Matt let Foggy check him over, smiling at the feeling of Foggy’s fingertips tracing down his surface sensors. “You don’t know how badly I wanted to get home,” Matt said. Matt heard Foggy smile back at him and he relished in the shared expression.
In their small Hell’s Kitchen apartment, listening to the sounds of violence that would inevitably compel Matt to secretly walk in darkness, Matt got another feeling. He felt happy.

That's it! If anyone wants to expand, go for it! You have my permission. Hope this was somewhat close to what you had in mind OP :).
Re: AI Daredevil [FILL - 2/2]
(Anonymous) 2016-05-05 02:27 am (UTC)(link)Having Tony admit that is a huge complement, but I bet Foggy wouldn't think he was that great of a roboticist. Makes me wonder what would happen if they ever did meet. Maybe once Matt and Foggy start their law office. The Avengers already know Matt is Daredevil so they would probably wonder who the person Matt is working with is.
The hints of Foggy/Matt were quite nice as well; really showed how emotionally invested Foggy is with Matt in very few words.
Finally, The fact you included how Age of Ultron would affect everything is fantastic! I hadn't really thought about that, but it so obvious in hindsight that Tony would have built in "Strange AI" protocols after having Ultron backfire so spectacularly, and seeing what Utron did would affect other creators like Foggy.
You have made this Asimov fan very happy :)
