Abandoned Fills Fest?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-29 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, during the next freeze, could we have something like an Abandoned Fills Fest? Like, maybe encourage people to revisit their favorite fills that have petered out and leave nice comments? Which could maybe nudge some authors with inspiration?

Accessible Writing Apps?

(Anonymous) 2015-10-29 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
So I have nerve damage in my hands and writing is a fucker. Predictive text is a lifesaver, but still a pain.. What apps/programs/etc help you write?predictive text? Dictation app that doesnt throw a fit if you pause to think for more than .3 seconds? Sheer willpower given by writtenkitten? What are your secrets?

truly an off-topic post about writing software

(Anonymous) 2015-10-30 09:49 am (UTC)(link)
this is similar to the above post but i didn't want to hijack that anon's hunt. i'm new-ish to mac and i'm looking for a free writing program, i've no use for microsoft office at this point in time and i'm not looking for anything fancy but i'm struggling to track down an easy-to-use free writer and was wondering if anyone had any advice?

I have never done it before so, I was wonderin, do any of you anons ever leave a more concrit-style comment on ao3...? I've never seen it either so maybe is not a thing..?
I was about to do it but then I realized that.. Uhmmm... Better not to? There's a fic whose story and worldbuilding I really like but the writing style is duuuh...

this is probably the dumbest + most confusing question

(Anonymous) 2015-10-31 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
i know very very very little about marvel aside from having watched most of the movies + daredevil and i was wondering, do dc superheroes exist in any way in the marvel universe??

i mean in terms of like, would anyone ever say "___ is your kryptonite" like would foggy ever say that to matt or does the marvel universe have absolutely no reference/knowledge to/of the dc universe?? i mean as far as i'm aware they don't exist as actual people but like do they exist in comic/character form?? could foggy have read superman/batman comics growing up??

Lost Prompt!!!

(Anonymous) 2015-11-01 11:21 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure I remember a prompt about Matt and Foggy being in each other's space and fighting then kissing happening?

Am I imagining it?

Could Brett be part Irish

(Anonymous) 2015-11-04 03:21 pm (UTC)(link)
So I'm wondering since Hell's Kitchen was Irish and Mahoney is an Irish surname. What if Foggy didn't find any of Matt's Catholicism odd for a non Catholic because the Mahoney family kept the faith and practices of an Irish ancestor. Or whatever. Basically I'm just thinking Brett could be Irish descent like Matt and wonder how they would play into things of given further character development or thought for stories. P

Random Question About College Headcanons

(Anonymous) 2015-11-04 03:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Just because I'm curious about other people's headcanons, what do people headcanon that Matt or Foggy have their undergraduate degrees in?

There's not only no specific prerequisites for law school, but not all universities even offer a Pre-Law or Legal Studies major. In fact, those paths have actually been shown to be less attractive to law schools, with philosophy, economics and journalism degrees all actually resulting in higher admission rates.

http://www.usnews.com/education/best-graduate-schools/top-law-schools/articles/2012/10/29/future-law-students-should-avoid-prelaw-majors-some-say

So what did they study first?

I personally have a headcanon of Foggy as having gotten a minor in Women's Studies, but as far as majors go I'm not attached to any particular one. I suspect Matt would have been the one of the two of them to have gone the straight Legal Studies, Criminal Justice or Pre-Law route.

Also, while I personally assume that they met in undergrad and not law school, if you do believe that they met when they started law school, which universities do you believe they attended before? Did they both remain in New York City up to that point?

Lost prompt/fill

(Anonymous) 2015-11-05 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
So this is embarrassing. I started filling a bodyswap prompt where Matt wakes up in Natasha/Black Widow's body, from the Avengers. I lost the prompt. I'm almost done with my other fic and would like to work on it? Does anyone have the link? I can't find it despite searching.

Polygraphs often don't work

Hiya all,

Thought this article might be useful to anyone writing about Matt using heart rate for lying- it's not admissible in court, for a start!

Fanvids

(Anonymous) 2015-11-06 02:23 pm (UTC)(link)
So, does anybody have any good BAMF!Matt fanvids? And more importantly, am I the only one who thinks 'You're Gonna Go Far, Kid' would make the perfect Stick fanvid?

This is one of those times I wish I had any video editing skills at all.

Etiquette question about gift exchanges

(Anonymous) 2015-11-06 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
So, I've got my assignment for the 2015 Daredevil Secret Santa Gift Exchange, and I'm super-excited. (I'm happy it changed from the first one I got, honestly, because I'm not sure I have the writing chops at all but that one was even more intimidating. Speaking of which, my recipient will be happy that I made something custom for him/her, no matter how substandard, right? It's made WITH LOVE, anon. Even though I don't actually know you.)

But this is the first time I've ever done one of these, and to fill in my back story I was considering incorporating something from a completely unrelated kinkmeme prompt. (One of those really general ones.) Would it be ruder to ignore that that was an inspiration for my backstory, or to give a fic to someone and say, "Oh, yeah, and it fills this prompt, too, so it's kind of like you have to share this gift with someone else...", which is kind of what citing that inspirational prompt in the story itself would do? Should I just link it to the secondary inspiration on its thread here on the kinkmeme, or should I post it on the fills page as well, and if I do either of those, should I wait for a while after the original reveal of the fic, or do it right away?

I mean, I know the recipients of the gift exchange are actually sharing their fics with anyone who wants to read them, and it's not like I'd say it was written for anybody but that person, but I'm kind of kerflummoxed on the etiquette issues, here.

Thoughts, opinions, sage advice from gift exchange veterans who have experienced something like this from either end before?

...and any other etiquette advice on gift exchanges, while we're at it? I may not be the only idiot fumbling my way through some of this, after all...

Do you ever feel like you somehow inherently stop conversation?

(Anonymous) 2015-11-06 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
...like (either in real life or on, say, the Daredevil Kink Meme), there's a really cool conversation going on, so you try to contribute to it, and then not only does no one respond to you but everyone stops talking entirely? Like, they stare at you and then check their watches and leave or you refresh the comments for three hours (or three days) and nobody's talking anymore?

Honestly, it can't possibly be personal hygiene over a kinkmeme.

I don't think I have a persecution complex, and I do understand that it's probably a.) weird hour differences or b.) a thread that was already dying (or c.) just my perception, because of the whole asynchronous aspect of these conversations and my impatience for more). I really just want to know if anyone else ever feels like this.

And also for someone else to resurrect the Halloween thread. Throw some praise to a lovely author, anon! No one ever deserves my comment to be the last word on a subject.

good dialogue?

(Anonymous) 2015-11-09 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
Are there any specific Daredevil fic writers you can think of that have consistently good dialogue? Like in character and well-paced. I've been trying to practice but there's only so many times I can rewatch bits of the show. I figured reading really good fic would be a nice start.

What kind of insurance would Matt have?

(Anonymous) 2015-11-09 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, somebody help me. Writing hospital fic and I have no clue about the American hospital billing system.

What kind of insurance would Matt, who has a new and barely profiting business, be able to afford (and how would that affect his hospital bill)?

Also, does his disability affect what kind of insurance he can get? Or would it be helpful in some way?

Basically I'm trying to figure out how much of a bill he'll be saddled with after a surgery and 5 days in-patient stay.

(Oh, and also: How does that process even work? Do you have to go to a cashier or something after you've been discharged? Do they put you on some kind of payment plan? If your insurance covers all or some, do you know right away? Or do you have to claim the entire amount and then wait on pins and needles wondering how much the insurance provider is going to cover?)

Petition: Karen Can Make Decent Coffee

(Anonymous) 2015-11-10 08:13 am (UTC)(link)
I vote that Team Avocado just buy better coffee grounds so that their lovely secretary doesn't make bad coffee in every fic. I submit that making good coffee has nothing to do with skill and everything to do with just not buying shitty grounds.

I vote for Folgers Gourmet Toasted Hazelnut. But I also like Starbucks Dark Roast and Cameron's Vanilla Hazelnut is ok (I bought it on sale because I was very excited about six dollars for a bag of coffee lol.) Starbucks Light Roast is nice too - my ex girlfriend used to drink that. Folgers Original isn't very good and it's also not as cheap as you think it would be. It tastes ok with milk though. Green Mountain Coffee black is the worst coffee I have ever had.

I need to commiserate with someone.

Who else is fed up with their long fic and fantasizes about abandoning it? x_x

Why is giving Child!Matt a shot that big of a deal?

(Anonymous) 2015-11-12 05:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Like maybe it's a cultural thing, but my very German grandmother would give me Jägermeister when I had a cough? Also, they use wine at mass. I understand not letting Matt drink a ton, but a nip here and there? It does not seem that bad.

I thought I'd mix it up a bit, and include some quotes from one of my favorite Catholic authors here. Feel free to respond to them and how they completely fail to apply, or to assume that I'm off my meds and ignore them, whichever. All quotes are from Orthodoxy.

The Christian admits that the universe is manifold and even miscellaneous, just as a sane man knows that he is complex. The sane man knows that he has a touch of the beast, a touch of the devil, a touch of the saint, a touch of the citizen. Nay, the really sane man knows that he has a touch of the madman.

For this next one: "Pimlico /ˈpɪmlɨkoʊ/ is a small area within central London in the City of Westminster," according to Wikipedia. So, pretty much an equivalent to, say, Hell's Kitchen.

Let us suppose we are confronted with a desperate thing—say Pimlico. If we think what is really best for Pimlico we shall find the thread of thought leads to the throne of the mystic and the arbitary. It is not enough for a man to disapprove of Pimlico: in that case he will merely cut his throat or move to Chelsea. Nor, certainly, is it enough for a man to approve of Pimlico: for then it will remain Pimlico, which would be awful. The only way out of it seems to be for somebody to love Pimlico: to love it with a transcendental tie and without any earthly reason. If there arose a man who loved Pimlico, then Pimlico would rise into ivory towers and golden pinnacles; Pimlico would attire herself as a woman does when she is loved. For decoration is not given to hide horrible things; but to decorate things already adorable. A mother does not give her child a blue bow because he is so ugly without it. A lover does not give a girl a necklace to hide her neck. If men loved Pimlico as mothers love children, arbitarily, because it is theirs, Pimlico in a year or two might be fairer than Florence. Some readers will say that this is a mere fantasy. I answer that this is the actual history of mankind. This, as a fact, is how cities did grow great. Go back to the darkest roots of civilisation and you will find them knotted round some sacred stone or encircling some sacred well. People first paid honour to a spot and afterwards gained glory for it. Men did not love Rome because she was great. She was great because they had loved her.

And later in the same chapter:

...I read a solemn flippancy by some free thinker: he said that a suicide was only the same as a martyr. The open fallacy of this helped to clear the question. Obviously a suicide is the opposite of a martyr. A martyr is a man who cares so much for something outside him, that he forgets his own personal life. A suicide is a man who cares so little for anything outside him, that he wants to see the last of everything. One wants something to begin: the other wants everything to end. In other words, the martyr is noble, exactly because (however he renounces the world or execrates all humanity) he confesses this ultimate link with life; he sets his heart outside himself: he dies that something may live. The suicide is ignoble because he has not this link with being: he is a mere destroyer; spiritually, he destroys the universe. And then I remembered the stake and the cross-roads, and the queer fact that Christianity had shown this weird harshness to the suicide. For Christianity had shown a wild encouragement of the martyr. Historic Christianity was accused, not entirely without reason, of carrying martyrdom and asceticism to a point, desolate and pessimistic. The early Christian martyrs talked of death with a horrible happiness. They blasphemed the beautiful duties of the body: they smelt the grave afar off like a field of flowers. All this has seemed to many the very poetry of pessimism. Yet there is the stake at the cross-roads to show what Christianity thought of the pessimist.

Stick's War

(Anonymous) 2015-11-14 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
What is it??? And why does he want Matt, specifically, for it?

Like, is it a comics thing, or is it just for the MCU/Defender's lead up? Why did Stick single Matt out in the comics anyway?

Following posts... I found something cool in chrome extensions

(Anonymous) 2015-11-15 03:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok, so I might be really behind the times and a whole bunch of people already know this... but I'm going to put my discovery out there anyway.

I found a chrome extension that is making my life on DDK so much easier. It is called "Page Monitor" and what it does is check the page you are following for updates. I spend so much time rechecking certain works in progress for updates it is not funny. So, who I can do with this instead is click the extension and choose to follow this page (use the link feature at on the title to only follow that one entry). Of course it will also show as updated when someone makes a comment, but that is great too when you post your own Fills and you want to monitor comments people make along the way. It is so easy to lose things.

Anyway- I hope this didn't sound too much like an commercial. I just thought it was really cool and useful.

:) Cheers.
