1. Ask the author if it's okay for you to continue their story. Wait a week before doing anything else. Check to see if they've replied. If they say yes, great! Continue to step two. If they say no, do not continue to step two. If they don't reply (which is the most likely option, if it is really abandoned), continue to step two.
2. Make a new prompt, (briefly) encompassing the original prompt and the story so far. You can link to the prompt/fill to make it 100% clear what your inspiration is. Post your continuation of the fill in response to this prompt, so it's as clear as possible that you are not the same author.
so, if I'm afk for a couple of weeks, I might come back and find someone has started a continuation of my story? I'm... not sure how I feel about that, but it isn't great.
Maybe we set a limit of abandoned for a month or more on fics people can re-post or prompt for a continuation of there, and make it a requirement as outlined elsewhere that you must make a good faith attempt to contact the author before you continue it?
Yeah, that would suck. Could a buffer maybe help here? Prompts from the latest prompt post can't be considered abandoned until that post is closed and has gone through a freeze OR, in the case of fills that started in a freeze, it's been over a month since there's been any kind of update from the author. (a brief, 'hey this is still on my radar', would count, wouldn't have to be a story update.)
though honestly, i'm much more in favor of figuring out a way to encourage the original authors to continue again. i don't want to do something that will leave a bad taste in people's mouths, for whatever reason.
Option 2 is personally cool with me though. I don't know about making it an official fest but if there's any fill people are really really really desperate to read more of, that seems the best option, because you're using the WIP as an inspiration and not explicitly taking over the fill.
Oh my god, same. There's one thing I've been working on filling for several months now. I have the first bit up on the kinkmeme but it never got any attention so I've been toiling away at the rest of it without posting. And to come back and find that someone else has continued off of my chapter one would make me fucking livid. It's great to have a heads up that now instead of periodically checking up on things I want to get filled I also have to check up on things I am filling from keeping someone else from putting words in my mouth.
This is totally different from multiple fills just happening and it doesn't seem like a good idea.
What is I see the question in two and a half weeks and I say, 'no' and the person is already done updating my story? Or what if I see it in that time and it's already posted? This just seems like a terrible idea and now I'm paranoid there are things which I think are done but which someone else doesn't and will write a prologue for.
Yeah, that's why I originally prompted a Fill Fest that would encourage the original authors to take a look at their old fills and maybe provide some support/cheerleading for getting them done.
Could even be a competition, actually. Who can finish the most WIPs, ready set go. XD

IDK I just really reject this idea.
