Re: Why is giving Child!Matt a shot that big of a deal?

IRT: "I think they use grape juice for kids now"

It depends on the church, and its views on communion and wine.

The church I grew up in used grape juice for everyone, as it had some fundamentalist leanings.

My current church uses wine, although it still uses those tiny communion glasses. (Some churches use wine in a shared cup, since the alcohol is supposed to kill of the germs. Or something. I've never actually attended one of those regularly.) But we also don't believe in paedocommunion; you have to be a member of the church in order to have communion, which means that church members tend to be at the very least adolescent.

Also, we use gluten-free bread in our communion, presumably in response to a special request, so if someone had a reason to request grape juice as well as wine, I'm sure the church would absolutely accommodate that.

(Which reminds me of a beautiful line from Adrian Plass about an alcoholic taking communion, considering "the glass containing both his problem and its solution," or something like that. And now I've wandered waaaay off field. Sorry!)

TL;DR: It depends on the church.

SA: Nobody cares, but I phrased that poorly, so let me clarify: Visitors are encouraged to partake if they "belong to a Bible-believing church." In case you're wondering exactly how fenced the table *is* at my church.

Cool, It's always interesting to hear how traditions and practices change and evolve.
My dad's church had 'the big gulp of Christ' as he called it. They rubbed the edge with a cloth between users, but everyone knew it didn't really do anything for germs.
Apparently these are now a thing, too
