Re: [MINI FILL] - Fisk/Matt, start of obsession PART 10
(Anonymous) 2016-05-25 11:40 am (UTC)(link)**
Leafing through the contract Matt learned the days would be his to do as he wished – within limits - while the nights were to be spent visiting with Fisk. It was a pretty nasty spin on his previous nocturnal activities and Matt bristled, hurling the contract at the wall.
When Donovan arrived he found himself perversely happy about it.
That night Matt’s sleep had been a constant stream of disturbing dreams, none of which he could remember apart from how it unsettled he was. It also left him tired and cranky. The morning hadn’t been an improvement. He’d tried to skirt interacting with the others – growing up poor in Hell’s Kitchen hadn’t equipped him to be at ease with servants even if they were doubling as his keepers. He wasn’t happy about the apartment – how could he be? He was confined in a place too big and too rich for his blood and which essentially was just a prettified prison. That he was relieved at Donovan’s entrance only further pissed him off.
“What exactly am I?”
There were lots of ways to answer that snarled question but Donovan quickly sensed Matt was in no mood for kidding around. “You’re Mr. Fisk’s associate. And good morning by the way. I hope you had a pleasant night’s sleep.”
“Associate? That implies some sort of equal standing.” Matt laughed bitterly. “I’m more of the flat-on-his-back type surely in this little scenario.”
“Okay. You’re his friend. Do you prefer that?”
“Is that complete with quotation marks? Or just more fancy speak for being a whore.”
Donovan smiled at him. “Prostitution is one of the oldest professions in the world, and in my opinion a much-maligned one.”
“Is that how I’ll be introduced to people? Fisk’s whore?”
“Only if you insist. I think you’ll find Mr. Fisk has more respect for you than that.”
For the first time the anger left the young man’s face, leaving a naked vulnerability in its wake that was hard to bear. The older lawyer had to look away.
“I… I don’t know if I can do this.” Matt’s voice faltered.
“You signed a contract.” Donovan said softly, casting a cursory glance at the mentioned document scattered on the floor.
“I could-”
“But it’s not really the contract you have to worry over. Come now, Matt, you know that.”
Matt nodded and seemed to sag, all fight lost. It’s why Donovan had wanted him to read over the contract in detail – it would have helped ease him into the status quo. It would have given some legitimacy to the situation or at least time. For a blind guy he certainly managed to convey a lot of misery in his large soulful eyes.
“And I came here with good news.”
Matt tilted his head inquisitively.
“I’ll be helping you get around today.”
It was Donovan’s idea to shadow Matt; he thought his familiar presence would help ease the transition for the young man. It was of no surprise to him that Fisk readily agreed - only asking for updates if needed. Underneath the hard exterior his boss had genuinely affectionate feelings for the blind man. Matt seemed oblivious to it – just like he was to his image plastering the walls of the cell where he had dined with and then consummated his relationship with the older man.
He could barely muster a response as Donovan introduced him to his driver – Jared – who like everyone else would be on constant call for him.
Later, he was glad he had insisted on accompanying Matt. He kept a keen eye on the tailor as he eagerly took Matt’s measurements, complimenting him several times on his form and patronisingly blathering on how a bespoke wardrobe would do him far more justice than pret-a-porter clothing and how it was just ‘a shame the young man wouldn’t be able to see the proof for himself’. He gave a withering look to Matt’s discarded suit.
His touches were a little too lingering for his taste until Donovan made it abundantly clear the man’s actions were inappropriate - and that Mr. Fisk would not appreciate it. The tailor had paled immediately and continued in a more professional manner. It didn’t seem to save his charge from any embarrassment though. Matt had reddened at his carefully chosen words, mindful of the implication about the nature of his relationship to Fisk and aware of how it sounded.
Matt sensed the man’s demeanour change at the mention of Wilson Fisk. He had to be wandering what he was to the older man. Fisk’s … what exactly? Boy? No, Matt was far from a child yet he knew that was how some would label him. Fisk’s slut was better, or at least more accurate. He thought back to last night. His shame at not fighting back and letting that heavy weight settle on top of him and how -
- He shook his head. No. He would not dwell on it. It was just what he had to do.
As they were about to leave Donovan insisted he dressed in an adjusted suit for an appointment to meet his new employers. So be it. It wasn’t like he had other plans anyway. He let himself be kitted out in a suit close to his size, waited for the minor adjustments and then was ferried to meet with the law partners who seemed eager to please both him and Donovan. It reeked of special treatment and not for the first time that morning Matt felt patronised and pitied. The poor blind lawyer who could only get this job because of Mr. Fisk’s influence. And didn’t that bite? That even behind bars that criminal could command more respect than he.
By the end of the meeting Matt was even more disheartened. There had been no discussion of his resume, his internship or Nelson & Murdock. There would be no pro bono cases; his clientele would be wealthy Manhattanites with too much time and money on their hands and clearly nothing between their ears.
Depressed, he wondered how long he could last living like this. Even now there was a burning desire to don his Daredevil outfit and do some good - and it was an ache that he had to resist. There was not one facet of this new life he wanted and he could feel himself giving up. Donovan led a zombie like Matt back to his apartment for a rest before he would meet with the doctor and Matt found himself not caring.
“Maybe you should rest up.” It had been a demanding day with a constant barrage of information so Donovan wasn’t surprised to notice the shadows under the young man’s eyes. The look Matt shot him was familiar: a pissed off toddler fighting sleep and hating being treated like a child. It didn’t help that Matt had only moments ago taken off his glasses and rubbed his eyes.
“Dr. Askew will be arriving in little over two hours. I understand the procedure is simple, shockingly so, but nonetheless it is an operation. A short rest makes sense surely?” He carefully avoided using ‘nap’.
Matt escaped to his room and apart from kicking off his shoes did not bother undressing before he clambered onto the bed. The moment his head hit the pillow he was out.
**
Askew was an asshole.
“We’ll let him rest after it has been fitted before activation. I understand the special circumstances of course, but I would recommend doing this at my hospital -”
“- No,” Matt said firmly. Askew glanced at Matt as though only just noticing his existence and not being overly pleased about it.
“If you’re worried about privacy there is no need. It’s a -”
“- No.”
“Matt,” Donovan kept his voice calm, “it would be best to follow the doctor’s advice.”
“No! I’m doing everything you want but I won’t go to a hospital. You can monitor me here if you need. You’ve done this before?”
“Yes, on several occasions.”
“And the number of times there has been a bad or any negative reaction?”
“Well, none,” Askew admitted.
After that Matt lets the good doctor take over, barely paying attention as the doctor fitted the device into the back of his neck. The man continued to treat Matt like he was irrelevant, directing his conversation to Donovan instead. It doesn’t take long; a miniscule cut on the nape of his neck and the placement of something so tiny Matt can’t feel it.
It was frightening how it was so easy to slip into his new life. Not that he had a choice, not with the spies, the bodyguards and the tracker now inserted into his neck and the constant threat hanging over his friends heads. Matt traced the tiny device with his fingers amazed at how it was practically impossible to spot.
“Well, the tracker is working,” Dr. Askew told Donovan after consulting his iPad.
Matt, standing by the window, stilled. Nothing. He had been worried it would have an adverse effect on his senses but he felt fine. For several moments no one said anything until there seemed to be sudden shift in mood. Donovan approached him hesitantly.
“Matt, your nose is bleeding.” He wiped his face, surprised to find blood smeared on the back of his hand. That was odd, when had that started? Donovan spoke again, his voice gentle but bursting with unease: “Matthew, do you-”
Matt staggered, his hands flying up to his head.
Noise blasted, a sudden endless agonising thunderclap hit his head hard with such blinding pain he crashed to his knees. The deafening noise only cranked up higher.
He couldn’t see the look on Donovan’s face but he heard the distress: “Mr. Murdock… oh my god, Matt! Matt! Askew, what the hell have you done? Matthew!”
Matt screamed, his head shrieking with pain. Everything else dulled. He could barely hear Donovan and the doctor’s panicked voices, muted now, while the horrible noise got louder and louder and the pressure in his head increased and Matt thought he might not survive this, that he may have just stumbled upon that one avenue of escape from Fisk and that Foggy and Karen would be safe and for a moment he was grateful when--
Pain. Oh god so much pain and he was screaming and there were hands on him and then--
