It's often Matt that's portrayed as super needy and stubbornly independent but I am terrible trash who wants Foggy to suffer emotionally and be super bad at dealing. Back me up here guys, this is a thing that can happen? I'm not even sure but I wants it.

Foggy who just shuts down when things get intense and channels anger or sarcasm to cover what he just can't process. Who keeps going and doesn't let himself think and fires insults like bullets when he's vulnerable and hurting - the 'I felt sorry for you' line? And his 'commitment issues' ala Marci? And the one thing that Foggy was sure about, the one thing that he could finally count on, that he knew to be true was that Matt actually needed him - it was the only thing that got him through some pretty bad nights. Matt needed him as much as he needed Matt, they were stable. I mean, Foggy's followed his idealistic ass from school to making a firm together, using Matt's courage to pull him out of L&Z before they were swallowed up. But Matt always turned to him, always wanted him there. Matt would never leave first (poor fucked up Matty). And then Matt's revelation about his senses, about DD? Knocks something out in Foggy's foundation, makes something crumble and he looks around and he doesn't know who he is or what he's doing and he apparently never knew Matt at all.

And his coping mechanisms? Are shit? He has no one to talk to about this and his almost-but-no-it's-not-that-bad-seriously just a few drinks takes a sharp curve into something that feels too much like 'just keep going, just keep going,' and it's every night and Matt doesn't even notice.

And of course he can't talk to Matt cause Matt's actually worse about all of this emotional shit and besides, Matt never needed Foggy, never trusted Foggy to tell him the truth. This is Foggy's to deal with alone. He's fine. They're fine. Everything's fine.

Is this a thing that can happen? I can't get out of my own head enough to get inside Foggy's and see if it could work but I read 'all our yesteryears' earlier and this desire just hit me, full force. Yes, no, maybe so? Someone come talk to me about this headcanon, I NEED IT.

AAAAAAH! Yes!

Not sure if I would say he could have borderline personality disorder, but I always headcanon Foggy as being as fucked up if not more fucked up than Matt, and we just haven't seen it yet. Based on what we've seen and what's said about him (Marci's "afraid of commitment" comment, his drinking, his insults to her and his offer to drink with Karen, his singing Gilbert and Sullivan late in the office) I definitely think that there's room for a "Something is a bit off about Foggy" headcanon, for sure.

In fact, I'm pretty much already writing one that's a WIP about him and his birth mom, or I'd take this one on. I hope someone picks this one up and runs with it though!

I'm not the Op but incorporating this into your story could always be a good idea if you want? Either way I'm seconding this idea as well, as much as I love the "Foggy is a cinamon roll that's too pure for this world" portrayal that's been in the fandom for a while now I get the feeling that Foggy probably has some issues and baggage of his own that he tries to hide behind a playful mask. I'd love a fic exploring that.

OP here! and I agree with the above anon, it'd be awesome to explore that angle with Foggy and his birth mom if you wanted (if anyone wanted? There's totally not enough of it). Mostly (though admittedly my knowledge of her is purely fanon-based) because of her constant disapproval, lack of validation, emotionally distant and worth-based affection is like prime breeding ground for Foggy to have learned an extremely bad emotional vocabulary.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who wants more stuff about Foggy's emotional baggage and issues. Like, there's a ton of fics that basically boil down to Foggy reassuring Matt that he's never going to leave him. And it just leaves me wanting sometimes, you know? And it'd be so easy to hurt them both. Foggy stops offering his arm/narration to Matt post-reveal (a typical trope). Matt gets all wounded and Catholic about it and can't stammer out that it's okay without being awkward cause he doesn't want to push Foggy so he comes across as distant. And all Foggy sees in his headspace is the years he was being too much, how Matt was only tolerating him for the sake of appearances, for the sake of his secrets. And Foggy starts feeling for the first time in years like he takes up too much space, like he breathes too loudly, like he's bursting with his own neediness. He's too much for Matt so he forces himself not to be. Forces himself to smile and be okay even as he's curling in on himself. Why would Matt even want him around? Nobody chooses Foggy first. And it's so insular, the way he's thinking, he doesn't even notice how much he's hurting Matt and Karen. (Their office is too small for passive-aggression, TOO SMALL, it would be seriously awful, and how the fuck do you practice distraction and distance when Matt can literally hear his heartbeat from a block away, Foggy's always being watched, he always has to be in control, keep a lid on it, Nelson, keep a lid on it, just get through it.)

But where to go with that? I suck at the pay-off/resolution because it's usually my least favourite part. I just really want them to suffer. Mostly Foggy, I want Foggy to suffer.
