This post is for prompts involving characters from Netflix's Daredevil.

Now that The Defenders prompt post is live, all crossovers between anyone in the four individual shows should go over there. Prompts only including characters that appear in Daredevil should still go here.

Rules:

General
1. YKINMKATO. Play nice. Respect others. If you don't like something, scroll on.
2. All comments must be anon. If you would like to be politely banned to avoid anon-failing, leave a logged-in comment on the mod post or pm the mod account.
3. Subject lines should only be changed if you're posting a prompt or a fill (indicators like OP or Author!Anon should go in the body of the comment).
4. RPF is allowed. Crossovers, characters from the extended Marvel Universe and comics canon are allowed, but must relate to the 2015 TV show in some way.
5. Prompts focusing on characters from other Netflix Marvel shows or the comics should go on their respective prompt posts, but crossovers with Daredevil can go here.

If he really wants a certain slave to be deaf, then yes, he could certainly do that himself. I don't think he'd delegate that to Wesley, Fisk is very hands-on when he wants.
Also doing so would help make his deaf slave terrorized of him (and less inclined to betray because of fear), so added bonus.

The sub-plot about Gao's slaves in all but in name: it'd be interesting! Canon tells us they're very broken on Gao's will (who would accept to blind himself, if that’s as voluntary as Gao makes it sound?), but maybe not all of them are? Heh.
We could revisit it later on; for now, Matt will definitely be limited to Fisk's building and the people he can meet there.

I'm picturing a very confused Matt wondering why he has so little to do, why did they even buy him? He can hear a lot of other slaves cleaning around, so???
I would have seen James explaining it to him, but an older woman mentor sounds amazing and also yes, it'd be a good scene to introduce one OC.

DD is definitely lacking good female characters, imo. It is especially lacking female relationships (Karen, the one female protagonist, doesn't have a single bond with another female character in all of three seasons).
My favorite female character is Claire, and I like Marci, but they are secondary (Marci more than Claire) and with much up to the reader to characterize them. I watched Claire's parts in all of the Defenders series, so I have a little more developed image of her, but still.

This train of thought aside, I'd be tempted to base Matt's soon-to-be mentor on Kirsten McDuffie, a comics character. No particular reason other than I love her.
They get together in the comics (then Matt leaves her in a pretty awful way), but their dynamic would be completely different here. So an OC would probably make more sense (not sure why I'm hesitant about writing complete OCs?).
I'll see what I can do. So this older OC would be a stock-asset with little to do just like Matt is, right?

Do you think the slaves consume their meals together or separately? (Fisk is rich enough to afford proper meals for them; why starve your workforce if you don't have to?)

What about Weasley and Matt watching it happen, then? They both have ties that would affect them. Weasley being a slave watching the man he's loyal to hurt a slave like it's nothing. Matt being a slave who is disabled watching his owner make another slave disabled.

They would both be disturbed, though Matt openly shocked while Weasley with similar air to when Fisk murdered Anatoley a foot away from him — cold, passive, seemingly indifferent and not even surprised. I imagine Matt would furiously confront him about it, and Weasley would have quite a few harsh words back (that probably expose more of the ugliness in our worldbuilding).

Who would be our Deaf Slave friend? Any ideas?

Where did they come from? Did they work for Fisk before, or are they new? Why did he choose them for that position?

What IS that position?

For some reason I imagine it to be a young Asian woman.

I don't know, maybe it's just an echo of a stereotype. But yeah, meek and beautiful is what came to my mind. Doesn't talk much.

Watch out though, there's much more to a person than you can see, especially when they don't show anything.

You know what, I definitely want this OC to be a woman now. Let's fill the story with women characters since DD gives us so little!

Could she maybe be someone Fisk(/Wesley) sends to seduce/incapacitate his adversaries? Maybe not, for an assassin/spy hearing would be important.
So maybe "just" to have her serve at his business meetings, much like Matt. They could be the only ones allowed into the meetings, and would also have to clean and prepare the rooms where the meetings take place (?).

So Matt and this OC would have a role beyond being a stock-asset, just a very specific one that would leave them with a lot of time on their hands.

Ooof, a blind slave and a deaf slave being the only ones allowed to serve at criminal meetings is creepy and absolutely AMAZING.

I still imagine her to be etherally beautiful (though Matt wouldn't know), like a Geisha serving tea. Hm, maybe the meetings would be weekly? Plenty of time to wander around and be 'stocks', but regular enough to be a plot itself.

How do they bond? How does a blind man connect with a deaf woman who may or may not speak English?

I had totally missed this.

How would they communicate is a great question. Even if the OC knew ASL (which I think Fisk might let her learn, since it could still be useful to be able to talk to her to give her orders and such), Matt would have a hard time signing and the only way he could understand signs would be by touch, which doesn't make for quick conversation (nor in public places, save for slave quarters probably). If she doesn't speak either English or Spanish they definitely won't be able to communicate at all, at first and for a long time. Maybe they'll manage to slowly craft their own language. Maybe not. (Maybe Matt will try to learn Japanese from Wesley? We said young asian, I'm going with Japanese but it could change of course.)

Matt would be seething! I can picture James holding him back because Matt is all too ready to go in and stop Fisk. (Try to, anyway.)
Maybe James will have to do something more drastic to stop Matt (like, sedating him? Or chaining him to a wall, something he'd stopped doing to him since the first few days.)

Oh. I imagined them both standing there powerlessly, watching in shock.

You're right though, Matt would try something.

So maybe Matt's presence there is less incidental than I thought. Maybe he is "invited to watch this" because Fisk wants to drive some point home for him. He gets chained to the wall, and he weigthers in it while James stands beside him freely, watching with learned indifference.

Maybe Fisk tells him this is a direct consequence of his actions?

And maybe Matt would choke on guilt and spiral, and probably do something stupid.

So Fisk would deafen someone else to punish Matt? (Ouch)

That could make the deaf OC resent Matt, maybe.

I think it's perfectly fine to get inspiration for OCs from characters that are already out there. I think every author does that. We reference each other, learn from each other, borrow things and change them.

Female Older Mentor OC

I don't know why, but I imagine her to be someone seemingly built for physical work. Like an old-timey washerwoman. And with similar demeanor and physical tasks rather than office. Not of the 'Armani' mold.

She's closer to Bess Mahoney than K.McD in my mind, though also her own person, different to how I imagine Bess. For one, I see her as nrown-skinned, not African American - Hispanic, maybe.

She's life-smart, knows when to keep her head down, has a blunt sense of (dark?) humor, doesn't mince words when talking to Matt and other equals and is maybe lucky that she's not the type to be "spoken to" or asked things by Fisk or other powerful free people (one of the 'be unobstrusive's) because she's really not the type to speak prettily and submissively. She's not about to challenge her owner; it's just that that's not how she speaks.

Hey, what if we make her a literal cleaning lady? I like that. Matt's Cleaning Lady Who Has Seen Some Shit Mentor.

What do you think?

I don't know K.McD very well. Maybe we could base another character on her?

Matt's Cleaning Lady Life-Smart Mentor sounds awesome! And if she's Hispanic, they could talk in Spanish :)
(But James would understand them anyway because that man knows far too many languages. Fisk canonically speaks Chinese and Japanese, do you think he would know Spanish as well? [I vote no because he doesn't care])

Nah, Fisk has people for languages.

He knows Chinese and Japanese, because he spent some Totally Not Racist Stereotype Mysterious Magic time in Asia. But for business dealings? Not to mention Poor People Speak? No, Weasley takes care of that.

I forgot Matt speaks Spanish!! I don't think that would be a secret code for them though, I imagine at least a third of lower-tier slaves speak Spanish, and some of them don't speak anything else. Reality is depressing, but I don't want to pretend racial power-and-poverty structures in USA don't exist.

(As a European, I'm not used to think of Spanish as Poor People Language (my grandma was born in Spain!), but I do realize that's the reality in the USA.) So yeah, no Spanish for Fisk.

Not a secret code exactly, but they could maybe manage a quick exchange over Fisk's associates' heads. Over Fisk's, too, if Wesley isn't there to translate.

Or maybe not a secret at all, but they speak Spanish anyway because they want to/Juana misses her roots.

I think Fisk would consider not only Spanish, but also Russian, Portugese, any Slavic or Balkan languages and probably more as Poor People Speak. The pool of languages dignified enough to be worthy of learning is pretty narrow.

Yeah, I don't think they get to talk to each other in Fisk's presence. Most free people presence, except for lowlifes like maybe food delivery guy (lol). I don't even think they'd get to both be in the presence of Fisk's associates' at the same time, or for Juana maybe ever. She's expected to be one of the 'unobtrusive' ones.

Then again, maybe she took to cleaning the office-adjacent bathroom just before Matt is supposed to be in that office? She is life-smart AND bold, so.

Maybe her name is Juana.

Maybe she stole food for her kid, was caught and enslaved. (And she wishes to reunite with her kid one day.) Or maybe no kid, but she had to steal not to starve and same result.

Juana. I like it :)

I'm not sure about the kid. I think there might not be room for it in the story. But I'd definitely would put the idea of Juana's now-adult daughter in a backpocket to re-examin later. She could be a fully-established OC in her own right.

I wonder where she is now?

Heh. Maybe she’s studying law to go against the system that took her mother away from her. 👀

Or maybe she's living a normal life and wonders what happened to her mother. Who knows?

Btw, I wrote a long post bouncing ideas for the plot below. (Should be the last thread on this whole post, under fill part3)
