Daredevil Prompt Post #12
AO3 Collection | Fills: Completed & WIPs
All Rounds & Other Useful Links
This post is for prompts involving characters from Netflix's Daredevil.
Now that The Defenders prompt post is live, all crossovers between anyone in the four individual shows should go over there. Prompts only including characters that appear in Daredevil should still go here.
Rules:
- General
- YKINMKATO. Play nice. Respect others. If you don't like something, scroll on.
- All comments must be anon. If you would like to be politely banned to avoid anon-failing, leave a logged-in comment on the mod post or pm the mod account.
- Subject lines should only be changed if you're posting a prompt or a fill (indicators like OP or Author!Anon should go in the body of the comment).
- RPF is allowed. Crossovers, characters from the extended Marvel Universe and comics canon are allowed, but must relate to the 2015 TV show in some way.
- Prompts focusing on characters from other Netflix Marvel shows or the comics should go on their respective prompt posts, but crossovers with Daredevil can go here.
- Drop a comment on the mod post if you have any questions or problems.
- Prompts
- All types of prompts are welcome.
- Use the subject line for the main idea of your prompt (pairing or characters, keywords, kink).
- Warnings are nice, but not mandatory. Get DW Blocker if there's anything you really don't want to see.
- Reposted prompts are allowed once one round has passed - e.g. prompts from post #2 cannot be reposted until post #4. Please include a link to where it has been previously posted.
- Fills
- When posting a fill, either add [FILL] (or something similar) to the subject line, or change the subject line to the title of your fill.
- Announce your fill on either the Completed Fills Post or the WIP Post.
- Long fills can either be posted over multiple comments, or posted on AO3 and linked back here.
- Multiple fills are always okay.
- Fills can be anything! Fic, art and vids are all welcome.
Re: S1 Slavery AU
(Anonymous) 2024-07-28 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)Oh, and I agree with you about consent issues in slavery. Not to bring a serious tone into all this, but I remember there being a certain US president that didn't consider it a problem... things like that actually happened in real life.
Going back to the more cheerful topic of grusome stories that are Thank The Gods fictional, this was my problem with that one Matt + Frank fic on AO3. I could be mixing things up here, but from what I remember — they get together seamlessly, like it's nothing. I don't neccessarily need Frank/Foggy/whoever to virtuosly refuse doing it with complete consistency — sometimes Foggy in DfS is a little too good at, well, being good for me to believe him — but I want it to be Problematic with capital P. Otherwise slavery is just an inconsequential prop for your romance story.
Also, in DfS Matt is almost physically unable to refuse an order from a free person even when he knows they don't mean it and Foggy is currently questioning if Matt didn't go along with their friendship just to pacify his owner, sooo... yeah. There's some consent issues there.
(I really love that tiny tibit in DfS where Matt is terrified that he may have been raped by Fisk. Even though it happened to him so many times before and he was forced to learn to accept that as his reality, just the idea that it happened again makes him Not Okay. It drives the horror of this kind of abuse home like few things do).

(Anonymous) 2024-07-28 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)Yes! DfS does a good job with the consent issues (even if yeah, Foggy is probably too perfect at times) and in depicting Matt's traumas. That part with and post Fisk was really chilling.
Re: S1 Slavery AU
(Anonymous) 2024-07-28 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)There's actually more than one. I remembered two and one didn't count, since it was with Matt as a teenager - already not my stuff - and not only broken beyond any recognition but also conditioned to be an extremely literal pet who walks on all-fours, is non-verbal and barks and so on. Which just — no. Nope. Nope.
I'm pretty sure that one's The Gift, if you want to give it a try. No romance with the literal child and/or dog, but I didn't find that reassuring.
But if you search for Daredevil + slavery on AO3 you get a pretty good number of results and at Matt + Frank there is A claim and State Property. Possibly more, but these stood out to me. SP is the one I read, I don't remember reading AC. I don't remember Matt being extremely broken in SP, so, uh, there's that. But they still get together with no problem.
Re: S1 Slavery AU
(Anonymous) 2024-07-29 05:38 am (UTC)(link)Isn't SP the one we referenced earlier, with Matt broken and getting together with Frank? At least that's how I remember it.
I checked out A Claim now, the premise is nice enough (Matt owned by Marci for a change! They grow up together and bond like siblings! Marci wants to free him but he says no because they plan to win the elections to remove slavery entirely, and it’s better if Marci appears traditionalist like their parents were), but then it's more about Matt meeting his soulmate I think. (And the last chapter is missing.)
Re: S1 Slavery AU
(Anonymous) 2024-07-29 11:31 am (UTC)(link)Marci??? Boy, the number of owners this poor guy has... XD
I don't remember Matt being extremely broken in in SP, but that might just be because I read it YEARS ago. I just remember being seriously disappointed in Frank for getting into a relationship with him without batting an eye. And also rolling his eyes when people raise eyebrows at that, which just makes things So Much Worse.
We also might have a slightly different idea of what "extremely broken" looks like? For me that's, uh, intense. "Quivering mess" comes to mind. Reading DfS and L&F will do that to a person, I guess. Or "unable to have a thought" if we go with the fucking dog-child story. But I remember also reading one in which Matt is stoically subservient with no resistance at all, even in the privacy of his mind, and being shocked that Matt being at least a little unhappy with it doesn't feature in the story at all. The whole fic felt like not only Matt, but also the narrator was completely fine with it, because not only it starts that way, it also doesn't change. The arc doesn't interact with Matt's subservient mindset at all.
Kind of the opposite of DfS, in which it's pretty subtle but you can see Matt going from "slaves gry used" and "Mark was a good owner because he only used me when he felt like it" to "slaves are raped" and "let me tell you about my previous owner Mark if you want to write about how badly slaves are treated". You can see him grow as a person, slowly getting free of his conditioning.
And you can see the tragedy of others not being able to grow in small comments like "I was wondering why Matt is so different" that really hit because we only ever see Matt, and being confronted with that "difference" is sudden and shocking.
If I have a criticism of DfS (other than Foggy being perfect) it'd be that — I'm pretty sure the author will give us freed Matt and consider it a happy ending.
Without a second thought to everyone that's left behind. Matt is fine, Mary Jane is fine, what more do you want? All is well in the world now. I find the approach of only caring about the abuse of main characters seriously disturbing.
If Marci's the owner in AC then I definitely never read it. And probably not TG either. I just skimmed the summaries last night and tried to match them with my memory, which clearly went spectacularly. Oh well. Sorry xd
Re: S1 Slavery AU
(Anonymous) 2024-07-29 11:56 am (UTC)(link)But yeah, there are stories where Matt is just an obedient slave/pet and Idk. That's not Matt but okay.
I might be wrong since it's been a while since I first read DfS (I haven't reread, just keep up with the updates), but I would hold out hope for a better ending than that? I seem to recall Matt being rightfully annoyed at others' (maybe Karen's?) perception of him being an exception (?). I'd really like for him to try and fight slavery as a whole, since I agree with you: just freeing himself would mean next to nothing. (I mean, poor Matt, he deserves to be free of course: everyone does.)
No problems at all! A Claim is nice imo, just pretty short and contained. Which isn't bad, in general, I can't really expect every slavery au to be superlong and focused on exploring the world-building xD
P.S.
I tried to write a start for this prompt!
Re: S1 Slavery AU
(Anonymous) 2024-07-29 12:04 pm (UTC)(link)The government has the brilliant idea to allow kids older than 10 to be adopted like pets instead of kids to smooth out the adoption process. Cue a lot of whump for Matt until he escapes and a youngFoggy finds him.
Re: S1 Slavery AU
(Anonymous) 2024-07-29 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)Matt being a quivering mess and yet unable to resent the status quo anymore sounds like an interesting starting point, actually. Ambitious AF to try to pull him out of it though, especially if you don't want your pace to be slow to the point of reader's boredom at nothing changing. Maybe it was too much for what I think was a very young author.
Yeah, I remember them joining resistance. I also remember it being kind of anticlimatic, possibly because yeah, Frank just decided they'll do that so they did it.
At the very end though Matt makes what I think might be his first (?) own decision, insisting he'll be the one to go resque another guy in the tunnels (?), taking a huge risk. So that might have been the intended turning point for his mindset, only the story never continued. From what I remember, those one or two last chapters where he determindedly goes deeper and deeper into lethal danger were the most interesting and best in the story.
Yeah, Karen was seriously disturbing and/or annoying in DfS at times. Which doesn't make her a bad character — the opposite, actually — but I had some trouble liking her. (Which, again, doesn't make her a bad character. In our post-Disney, Hollywood era, we think every character has to be likeable but in fact it makes for much better literature when they're not). And I was definitely annoyed myself at her thinking that Matt's just "a different sort".
But it's still a puzzle piece, and paired with how Matt remembers himself being, Foggy reading about slaves trusting you if "they get to the toilet before accidents happen" and probably half a dozen that I don't remember — well, it paints an ugly picture. And a picture in which not neccessarily Matt but definitely MJ is significantly different from "the sort", which I think is a bit of a stumble in the story.
There's a lot to love in DfS, but characterisations sometimes come out a bit clunky. Not Matt though; Matt is written amazingly.
