-—————————
As they grew closer as friends, Matt wanted to share more of his life with Foggy. One day, he invited Foggy to Fogwell’s gym where he worked out. Foggy watched in fascination as Matt pummeled the punching bag. During a pause in the action Matt told his friend, “I could teach you if you like. Come here.” Foggy started to decline but noticed the happiness in his friends face. Matt had so few reasons to be happy, Foggy couldn’t bear to deny him this. “OK, he hesitantly said, “but I warn you I don’t think I’ll be very good.”
“Not with that attitude.” Was Matt’s flippant reply. “Now, let me show you how to make a fist….” By the end of the lesson, Foggy knew how to make a fist and punch in such a way he didn’t break his hand. He was having trouble with the foot positions, movements of his body as he punched, and hitting the target but he was surprised to learn he was actually having fun.
“Thanks Matt” he said with a genuine smile as they started to head back home.
“You’re very welcome Foggy. If you like, we can practice some more this summer. I’ll bet you’ll be a pro by….” Matt suddenly tensed next to Foggy and tilted his head. His expression grew worried and he handed Foggy his duffle bag and drew his hands into fists.
“What’s wrong?” Foggy asked, suddenly nervous as well. It was dark in these streets but they seemed deserted.
Matt hesitated for a moment then said, “There are people in the alley up ahead. Two, no three there and…” He tilted his head around some more and paused to listen “and three behind us following. C’mon, let’s cross the street, maybe there’s still time to avoid them.”
“How can you even know that?!” Foggy hissed as he quickly followed Matt across the street.
Matt looked pained as he pulled his jacket hood up, obscuring his face from view, “Foggy,” he pleaded. “Please trust me. I won’t let….” That was the last thing he was able to say before the three thugs behind them caught up followed shortly by the three in the alley. Foggy did not like these odds, the men looked big and mean. He didn’t think it likely they’d get out of this unscathed, especially since Matt was blind and he’d only just learned how to throw a punch.
“Well, well, what have we got here?” The leader asked as Matt pushed Foggy behind him.
“Looks to me like we have us a couple of fags.” One of the other men said.
“What?!” Spluttered Foggy at the same time Matt said “Leave now and you won’t get hurt.”
Foggy looked at Matt’s back, suddenly startled. The other man had transformed right in front of him and he hadn’t even noticed. Gone was the relaxed posture and hesitancy of walking with the cane. Instead, Matt’s whole body was tense. He was in what Foggy vaguely recognized as a fighting stance and his cane was held out in front of him like a weapon instead of a walking aid. Matt looked like a panther ready to pounce.
The leader laughed in his face. “Now look here you faggot! You are going to give us all your money and then we’re going to take our time with you both, show you what a real man feels like,” He said as his underlings surrounded them.
Matt slowly reached back and pushed Foggy firmly against the wall. “You won’t lay a hand on my friend,” he said, voice low and menacing. “Now, this is your last chance, leave now.”
In response to the threat the leader pounced, aiming a fist at Matt’s face. Matt smoothly parried with his cane then proceeded to whack the side of the man’s head as he brought his cane back to a ready stance. The thug went down and all hell broke loose.
Foggy was having trouble keeping track of what was happening right in front of him. The five other men simultaneously went after Matt, and Matt…. His friend was as cool as a cucumber, parrying left and right, kicking knees in, hitting torsos and faces with his cane, all while standing guard in front of Foggy. Every once in a while one person would try to get through and grab Foggy but Matt somehow always knew, even when he wasn’t facing that direction. He’d quickly dispatch his own opponent, then attack Foggy’s with such ferocity that Foggy thought he was going to kill the other man. It was all over in the span of five minutes. Six people lay still at their feet and Matt, while breathing heavily, didn’t have a scratch on him. Foggy stood stunned before he felt Matt roughly pulling him away. He stumbled along for a few blocks before he found his voice. “What the hell was that?!” He said, his volume increasing with each word. Matt stopped and faced in Foggy’s direction. Foggy was surprised to see the other man looked scared, he hadn’t seemed scared at all just before or during the fight. “Foggy, Foggy, please….” Matt took a deep breath and continued. “Please just trust me for a little longer. Let’s get somewhere safe OK?” As the men walked back to Foggy’s childhood home, Foggy couldn’t help but ask “Are they dead?” This brought Matt up short. He looked at Foggy with deep sadness before replying quietly, “No, they’re just unconscious. A couple of broken bones on some of them but no life threatening injuries.” After this short exchange they stayed quiet all the way back to the house. They went straight to Foggy’s room and closed the door behind them.
“OK Matt, we’re safe.” Foggy said trying to stay calm, “Can you please explain what just happened? How, how did you do that? You’re blind, I’ve seen you struggle to make sense of websites and complain when there are no accessible books for our classes! I’ve helped you match your clothes so you don’t look like a walking eyesore! I know you’re not faking that, so how the fuck can you do that?!” As Foggy spoke his volume increased and Matt’s anxiety increased with it. “Please Foggy, please keep your voice down, I don’t want your whole family to hear!” He implored. Foggy started pacing the small room in an attempt to calm down. He still had a lot of adrenaline coursing through his veins from that altercation. Finally, after 15 minutes he felt calm enough to talk. To Matt’s surprise, Foggy sat down on the bed right next to him. “You’re… You’re not afraid of me?” He whispered, and it broke Foggy’s heart to hear the uncertainty in Matt’s voice. “No Matty,” he replied quietly, taking Matt’s hand. “How could I be afraid of you when you just saved my life? I am confused though, can you tell me how you did that?” Matt thought for a long moment and then nodded his head.
“What I’m about to tell you I never told anyone Foggy, not even my dad. And I’m not sure how to explain it all, so please bear with me.” At Foggy’s slight nod he continued. “Before I start, I need your assurances that you won’t tell anyone. I’m trusting you with my life here Foggy. If anyone found out I… I don’t know what would happen to me.” Matt had taken off his glasses for this conversation and Foggy could tell he meant what he said. Matt genuinely feared for his life if this secret was discovered. “You have my word, I’ll never tell another soul,” he said solemnly.
And so Matt told Foggy his greatest secret. He explained how the chemicals that blinded him also gave him enhanced senses, as he explained his world on fire Foggy interrupted “So you can see?” Matt gave a frustrated huff. “No, no Foggy you’re not listening! Or maybe I’m not explaining it right! Argh! This is so hard!”
“It’s OK Matty, take your time. We’re not going anywhere,” Foggy soothed.
Matt took a deep breath and tried again. He stood up and said “Get behind me please.” Puzzled, Foggy nonetheless complied. “OK,” Matt said, taking in another deep, calming breath and still facing away from Foggy. “I want you to hold up some fingers and I’ll tell you how many.” Foggy held up six. “You’re holding six fingers up, or rather five fingers and a thumb.” Matt said before turning around. As Foggy gaped at him Matt said “I can’t see how you do Foggy, there’s no way a sighted person could have seen that. My senses let me perceive the world all around me. It makes no difference to me if something is behind me or in front of me, I can still detect it just as well, which incidentally, is how I was able to deflect those two goons that tried to grab you. But I still can’t see. Do you understand?”
“I think I’m starting to,” Foggy said thoughtfully. “So, how else is your… vision, for lack of a better word different from mine?”
“Well, as you know I can’t see color, I can’t read a screen either. Books are trickier. Sometimes, if I try really hard I can read the text of a book through touch. Older books are easier because the text is more defined for my senses. The newer printers though, honestly it gives me a headache to try. I can’t read menus because they’re laminated. Um, what else…. Oh, I can detect nods and head shakes sometimes, but I can’t really make out facial expressions. Although sometimes I can guess by other things…. There’s a lot more, it’s not just my hearing that’s enhanced, my sense of spacial awareness, balance, touch, and taste is also enhanced. All of this input allows me to imagine my surroundings such that I can navigate or, or fight if needed. But I can’t actually see out of my eyes, they still don’t work. I have zero light perception.”
“So, how far can you hear?”
“Um… usually several city blocks, more if I concentrate hard enough.” At Foggy’s gasp, he quickly continued, “ You have to understand though Foggy, it all takes focus. I have all this input coming in all the time, nonstop and if I let it all in I’ll go insane. So, I have to filter a lot of it out somehow. I’m not actually listening to all our neighbors all the time.” Matt hesitated before he made his next comment, “I um… I can also hear and smell things in… in a close by body as well.” He finished in a rush.
Foggy’s heartbeat predictably sped up at that. “What do you mean?” He asked.
“Well, I can self diagnose broken vs fractured or bruised bones in myself, and in others. I can also detect very precisely where a bullet or other foreign object is lodged in my body which will enable me to safely remove it and stitch up the wound. I can tell if I have a concussion or internal bleeding.”
For what seemed like the thousandth time that day Foggy found himself gaping at his best friend. “You, you sound like you’re speaking from personal experience there buddy,” he said hesitantly. Matt just shrugged noncommittally in response. “Am I…. Am I freaking you out yet?” Matt asked quietly.
“Um, yeah. A little bit. But you’re still my best bud” Foggy quickly assured. Matt could hear his heart beat steadily as he said this. Foggy really wasn’t lying and Matt let out a sigh of relief.
Then he braced himself, this next part was more intrusive and he wasn’t sure how his friend would respond.
“I can also hear your heartbeat.” He confessed and inwardly steeled himself for Foggy’s anger and rejection.
Foggy’s heartbeat did indeed increase, but he just said “Hm… I’ll have to think about that one. Do you, do you listen all the time?”
Matt nodded minutely. “I didn’t at first!” He hastened to say, “but it’s just… it… it helps me calm down, and and focus when things start to get overwhelming.” Matt looked down at his hands as he said quietly “I’ll understand if you don’t want me to listen anymore.”
“Let me think on it OK buddy? But for now, if it helps, you have my permission to keep listening.”
“I don’t think you quite understand Foggy,” Matt replied. “A person’s heart and smell tell me things about them. I can tell if they’re lying by the way their heart beats. I can tell if they’re excited or nervous or aroused by their heart and the smell of their pheromones and sweat.” Matt decided to make it more personal so Foggy would understand what he was committing to if he stayed in this friendship. “I can tell you snuck a piece of chocolate cake last night, I can tell you what brand of deodorant you use, I can tell that your heart is beating faster the more I say. I can’t help knowing these things about you Foggy!” He exclaimed, “But, but I can also tell other things too. Things that make me trust you. I know you weren’t lying when you agreed to keep my secret. I know that…” and here he paused, this next one was hard to admit, even to himself. “I know that you’re attracted to me, sometimes I can smell your arousal if I forget to put on a shirt. But, I also know that when I fall apart you are just there to comfort me. There’s no arousal from you then, only concern for my wellbeing and that makes me feel safe.”
Foggy looked at Matt, heard the desperation in his tone. These things Matt was telling him were disturbing, but he could tell things about his friend too. He knew Matt’s history more or less through bits and pieces gleaned through their various conversations. He knew his friend was alone in the world and scared. He could see the fear on Matt’s face. If Foggy had to guess, he’d say Matt was afraid he’d abandon him. Deem him too strange and intrusive to stay his friend. He had a lot to think about, his friend was even more extraordinary than he’d first thought, and he wasn’t even done telling him the tale yet. He still hadn’t explained how he learned to fight. One thing he knew for sure though was that he didn’t want to loose Matt’s friendship and trust. Foggy sat in silence for so long that finally he heard Matt sigh and start to get up. There was sadness in his voice as he said, “I’m sorry, I’ll leave.” And with that he started picking up his things and putting them in his duffel bag.
“What? Wait Matt, stop!” Foggy sputtered as he got up and tried to stop his friend from packing. “I’m sorry Matt, stay. Please stay.”
Matt stopped packing and stood still, shock written all over his face. “I don’t understand. Why don’t you want me to leave? I’ve just told you I’m a freak! Y-you can’t p-possibly want to s-stay f-friends with me!” Matt stuttered out.
“First of all, don’t you ever call my friend a freak. Do you hear that Murdock?” At Matt’s astounded nod Foggy continued, “Matt, you are my best friend. You saved my life earlier today and you just told me your deepest darkest secret, despite thinking I’d abandon you for it. I don’t want you to leave, and you’re not a freak you’re extraordinary. I have a lot to think about, and a lot more questions, but that certainly doesn’t change our friendship status, at least not for me. Now, I need you to use your super sniffer to help me find where Mom hid the last of the pie!”
Matt laughed and readily agreed. Before long, the two were eating pilfered lemon meringue pie and talking excitedly about what classes they were going to take next year.
