Daredevil Prompt Post #12
AO3 Collection | Fills: Completed & WIPs
All Rounds & Other Useful Links
This post is for prompts involving characters from Netflix's Daredevil.
Now that The Defenders prompt post is live, all crossovers between anyone in the four individual shows should go over there. Prompts only including characters that appear in Daredevil should still go here.
Rules:
- General

- All comments must be anon. If you would like to be politely banned to avoid anon-failing, leave a logged-in comment on the mod post or pm the mod account.
- Subject lines should only be changed if you're posting a prompt or a fill (indicators like OP or Author!Anon should go in the body of the comment).
- RPF is allowed. Crossovers, characters from the extended Marvel Universe and comics canon are allowed, but must relate to the 2015 TV show in some way.
- Prompts focusing on characters from other Netflix Marvel shows or the comics should go on their respective prompt posts, but crossovers with Daredevil can go here.

I'M ALIVE!!! :D Part 26 - Steve
(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 10:51 am (UTC)(link)Steve went on walks. More walks.
Soon he'll walk through the circumference of the Earth, if keeps at it - or the distance from Earth to the Moon. One small step for a man...
It was one of the first thing they showed him when he got fished out and brought back to life like a parody of a Messiah - the Moon Landing. One great leap for the humankind. Look at us, so much progress.
Look at them, still in the same bloody place as 80 years ago. This the Moon Landing landed - right where it came from. Progress was nothing but a shiny toy to wave in front of some Russians.
He snorted. Look at him, Captain America being bitter about the future. His biographers would be appalled.
Steve kept a number of secrets from his biographers.
He suspected he didn't need to; Propaganda Departament got scrapped, but with the days, weeks and months, now two years of watching the future, he got fewer and fewer doubts that it was little more than a name change. Too many slogans were flowing in the air. Best country in the world. Protecting freedom and democracy. Truth, justice and the American way. Shining city on the hill, Home of the brave, I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States...
Steve read 1984 and he didn't like what he saw.
He closed his eyes. Earth's Migtest Heroes. Captain America.
"Have you ever been cynical, Buck?"
Have you ever wanted to just stay in your grave?
Bucky's empty grave didn't have an answer for him; it never did. Steve wondered if he could ask to be buried in it, anonymously.
Probably not. Too much freedom and democracy to squeeze out of his empty corpse. Truth and justice.
The American way.
"They put chemicals in a person again," he told the grave. "Did I tell you? That I wasn't the only one? It's a secret. I wasn't supposed to tell you."
He hadn't. He was loyal, and dedicated, and he had never revealed any national secrets. Any national crimes. Fighting the Nazis was more important. The Nazis that separated people by race, and performed human experiments and eugenics.
"I wasn't the only one," he said again.
He went on a neusating information search recently; internet was a wonderful thing, you could never hide what was once revealed anymore. Not even Shield could shield him from truths anymore - answers were out there, all it took was to know what questions to ask.
A lot of effort went into making people not ask. I pledge allegiance. Steve had pledged allegiance too. In a previous life.
"There were others like me in the program. Some died immediately. Some were mangled or crippled. Nobody survived; I don't know how many were merci-killed, and how many murdered just to keep them quiet."
The last batch, he remembered them well. There were only four of them, Steve, John, Harry and James. Those were the ones whose faces he got to see; his companions. Every one of them blond-haired and blue-eyed, young and happy and ready to be better.
Ubermenshen.
"Some got mangled or crippled," he repeated. It should be told more. "Some got sick, and the doctors didn't tell them. And there were other programs out there AFTER, too. Not even to make a better human to fight your wars; just to... see what happens. When you hurt a body. When you don't treat a disease."
The earlier batches, those weren't made out of white men.
"One... was called a Tuskegee Experiment. There were 400 men in that one. They were sick with syphilis, but nobody told them, and they just got false diagnosis and fake treatments. Doctors watched them slowly die for 40 years. It started when we were alive, do you know? Ended when we were long dead. We still do that. America still does that."
His voice was thick with tears now. "Remember the Smithson family, Bucky? Their boys were just our age. Why didn't we befriend them, Buck? Why did we take part in this?"
The Smithsons were different, of course. Separate. But equal.
He closed his eyes, renembering the faces of the little Smithson boys, who were darker and worse, and the face of an unnamed man hiding from America in a cave, who was pale and the same, and it didn't even matter in the end. His tears fell.
"I want to go back, Buck," he whispered. "I want to leave."
Re: I'M ALIVE!!! :D Part 26 - Steve
(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 11:19 am (UTC)(link)So, fun fact in case you haven't watched The Falcon and the Winter Soldier: there was a Black man who got a successful version of the serum too! Isaiah Bradley. The government ended up imprisoning him to experiment on him (until a nurse helped him fake his death) and deleting him from history. Nice stuff :) (Maybe there were more but they died in war/serum failure, I honestly don't remember. Been a while since I watched that show. Only Isaiah remained, either way.)
I'm mentioning it because I wondered if that's where you were going while I was reading.
Anyway! Understandably very depressed and in crisis Steve. I like the detail of Bucky's grave. (I'm now picturing struggling-with-his-programming Bucky and this slaveMatt be friends. Help XD)
Steve wants to leave, but he can't. I wonder what he'll end up doing.
Re: I'M ALIVE!!! :D Part 26 - Steve
(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)Yeah, describing Tuskegee Experiment here is my personal social service. It wasn't the only one, but it's the one I know most about.
They're always performed on Black people...
Or gay men. One of the two.
I haven't watched it, no. Thanks for telling me, that's interesting.
I've only seen like... four of the movies? Iron Man, Iron Man Probably Two (I think...? The one with Ultron and Sokovia), Avengers (that's a movie, right?), the Engame one (I think; no wait, it must have been Civil War) and also Guardians of the Galaxy which just said "Fuck it. Let's lean into the weirdness." and made a talking racoon steer a spaceship XD. That one was definitely memorable, though I'm not sure what the plot was. Two sisters of two colors on I think two sides of something...? That's what I have.
So, yeah, Avengers are mostly a vibe for me. What I know about them mostly comes from fanfics. Which is I'm sure a distorted view, but I kind of like it.
If there are any Marvel movies that I'd like to watch though, the Winter Soldier would be on the list. That and Black Widow. And Deadpool, since he's apparently hilarious. One day I'll get around to that.
Re: I'M ALIVE!!! :D Part 26 - Steve
(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)And yes, Avengers is a movie :)
I like your Avengers, anyway! They have the right vibes. [The following paragraphs assume you don't mind spoilers โ I'm fairly sure, but be warned anyway!]
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is actually a TV show (6 episodes, like Hawkeye). It's about a character you might remember from Civil War, Sam Wilson (Falcon), to whom Steve left his shield (Steve goes back to the past at the end of Endgame, we see him old in the present satisfied and passing the shield to Sam). Sam gives it to the government at first (not a great idea), but ends up claiming it back by the end of the show to be the new (Black) Captain America.
It's not a conflictless choice.
Bucky introduced him to Isaiah Bradley (the Black supersoldier), who is reasonably very bitter and at some point tells Sam something like "No self-respecting Black man would wear their (America's) symbol".
Steve doesn't know about Isaiah, by the way.
I love Black Widow! Mostly because it's focused on Natasha and introduces Yelena, whom I love. (Yelena's meant to be asexual โ she is in the comics and the BW director confirmed it โ, though it's not explicit of course. There are hints for who wants to see them.) It avoids the psychological complexities of human trafficking by using comicbooks science, but that's fair enough for a Marvel movie.
Winter Soldier has Steve and Nat, brainwashed-Bucky and introduces Sam Wilson, all in a spy plot. Not bad!
The Guardians of the Galaxy are hilarious. And a found family, which I may be weak to. They have their serious moments, but still, funniest movies along with Ant-Man.
Deadpool... I used to love it and find it very funny, as a teen. When I rewatched a few years ago I actually didn't find it all that funny; it has a pretty vulgar sense of humor, it's politically uncorrect etc. (Not saying it's a bad thing.)
I haven't watched Deadpool&Wolverine (out right now), but I probably will sooner or later. Apparently there's the Elektra from the early 2000s movies in it.
Whoops, I ranted about marvel movies. Oh well. :)
Re: I'M ALIVE!!! :D Part 26 - Steve
(Anonymous) 2024-08-23 12:41 am (UTC)(link)You can rant :)
I remember Sam Wilson, yeah. Mostly I remember him as the guy Captain USA met while jogging xd.
I fully support that. It's not my place to criticize any Black Americans for how they feel about the country that kidnapped them and kills them on regular basis. I do understand that this also home. But that is definitely how I feel, and I'm not even Black. Or American. Respect to the writers for having the courage to bring that up. It sounds like they dismissed it as part of their "happy ending" and that the guy's ultimate character arc is "I forgive you, white people" - which, uh... questionable. Especially in a movie made by white Americans for other white Americans, that feels very self-serving. But I'm speculating, maybe it's nothing like that.
But that's the interesting part!! It's to be expected from a Marvel movie, yeah, but that's why I don't watch Marvel movies anymore, and forgot the ones I did see practically in their entirety. They always seem like there's just nothing behind them, just a bunch of Ubermenshen in colorful capes flying around to "save the world" and very predictably winning every time whith no effort. I know there's a bit more to it, but, still.
Spy plots are something I've been looking for recently, so I'll keep this one in mind. And yeah, from the sound of the it - when well done, it could be a really good movie.
GotG were definitely the most memorable one! I guess introducing talking racoons will ensure that. But you could easily see that the movie doesn't take itself seriously - which did well for them - and gave some hilarious lines. "Why is..." felt like generational lingo for a while. Not so much anymore, and I'm sad to see it go.
Deadpool being vulgar and "politically incorrect" is dissppointing. You'd think script writers. And while the vulgar part can be up to taste, "politically incorrect" is a euphemism. That's not something Im willing to accept anymore.
Thanks for the rant! Genuinely.
Re: I'M ALIVE!!! :D Part 26 - Steve
(Anonymous) 2024-08-23 04:28 pm (UTC)(link)Isaiah Bradley, who said the phrase about self-respecting Black men, doesn't forgive white people at the end (if I recall correctly).
Sam decides to wear the costume despite everything, because he wants things to change and wants to be the change (after he gave the shield back at the start, the government spent no time to nominate a new Captain America, obviously white and blonde). And I think Isaiah eventually "accepts" Sam's choice, when they talk about it at the end, but he's not going to change life-style or anything. (My memory of that show is kinda vague.)
I get your point about Black Widow! I did find the psychological problem of being mentally controlled interesting, despite it not being what actual trafficked humans go through. Yelena says something like "You're conscious all the time, but you don't know which part is you and which part is the controlling. I still don't know.", at some point after she's been freed from the control.
And after all is said and done, Yelena (and at least two other Widows, probably more) ends up working as an assassin (for the CIA apparently?), which is realistic.
GotG definitely created a few memorable memes, yes. And talking raccoon aside, everyone fell in love with the talking tree who only says "I am Groot" for some reason.
I'm always up for ranting! :)
Re: I'M ALIVE!!! :D Part 26 - Steve
(Anonymous) 2024-08-23 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)Oh, that does sound better. I'll give that show a chance when I have the time.
...so the happy ending in BW is that abused KGB agents are now killers on CIA payroll? That's, uh... probably realistic, yeah, but unless it's framed as a PROBLEM HERE, AUDIENCE it's seriously fucked up. That's what I hate the Punisher for - it spent the entire series portraying corruption in the army/policing system, to the point where the main cop character quits FBI in rage. That was really something for a show made in USA, I respected that. And then they give us an epilogue in which we learn that the woman who quit FBI over crime, human rights violations and corruption JOINED THE CIA. You know, as a step toward justice. Nothing to see here, just a logical happy ending folks...
(sorry for introducing a different show entirely, it seemed relevant).
I would probably be a little annoyed at creating and exploring fake psych problems while ignoring real ones. But I get why people find that interesting; speculating about human mind always is. And if done well, it can make some really, really good fiction. That's hard to achieve though.
That said, I'm a bit curious about Yelena as a character. I'd give her a chance :)
I remember the wave of video esseys on YT that started with "Why is [name]" and proceeded to dismantle what was usually some conservative media figure. That was pretty great, I wish saying that stayed around longer.
Re: I'M ALIVE!!! :D Part 26 - Steve
(Anonymous) 2024-08-23 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)Not exactly! The happy ending is ending their abusers and freeing the Widows. The post-credit scene jumps to after Endgame (and after Natasha's death) and shows us Yelena on Natashaโs grave, where she's joined by a woman [who should be CIA, I think, but who knows?] who tells her she's got a job. Yelena is annoyed, but the woman adds "Don't you want to kill the man responsible for your sister's death?" aka Clint, and we see how that goes in Hawkeye.
It's in Hawkeye that one of the Widows tells Yelena that she should do as she does and work as a killer. (And yes, it is a problem.) I'm not sure how marvel is going to handle that (Yelena, along with Bucky and other villains, will be in Thunderbolts, which in the comics is a team of ex-villains/grey characters who work for good I think), I don't exactly have high hopes. I do hope Yelena doesn't end being like a Punisher for the government.
And no worries about introducing another show, rants are always welcome! Also yes, the Punisher ending was very disappointing. Madani aside, S1 ends with Frank admitting to be scared, which was cool and interesting to me, so of course by S2 he goes back to unapologetically killing criminals.
Re: I'M ALIVE!!! :D Part 26 - Steve
(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)If you're interested in the topic, here's a definitely-not-complete but LONG list of things that would make Capitan America want to die again. It's honestly hard to pick the most horrifying one, Tuskegee was mild in comparison.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unethical_human_experimentation_in_the_United_States
Some of the highlights:
taking testickles from dead people and animals and implanting them into prisoners
injecting babies, disabled children and orphanes with fatal diseases
inserting things into 3-days-old newborns
giving 800+ pregant women radioactive drinks to see how quickly babies would get sick
scratching people's faces and pouring syphylis on them ; injecting people's penises with syphilis
forcing people into addiction; then forcing them into withdrawl
army sprinkling army ships with chemical warfare while 1000+ soldiers are on board
CIA searching for truth serum via chemical experimentation and mental torture, CIA doing A LOT of other things
checking how effective is torture, the latest of those we know of are I think from 2010s
seeing how long a person can go without sleep (you go into hallucinations and then die)
seeing how long you have to abuse children before they have a trauma-iduced stutter
a man killing himself after forced into antipsychotic research with what sounds like either threats or blackmail, AstraZeneka, 2004
injecting people with cow blood in 1940s, injecting people with artificial blood between 2000 and 2010
the Iraq War experiments on how to torture people more efficiently
and more. "Injecting people with diseases" section had to be broken up into decades. Last one there is the 60s, those are the experiments that had started in the 60s. After that, we just don't know yet.
It doesn't include whatever is currently going on in Guantanamo Bay, a prison deliberately established by USA outside of US territory to avoid their own human rights laws.
So, yeah. Poor Steve.
Re: I'M ALIVE!!! :D Part 26 - Steve
(Anonymous) 2024-08-21 04:30 pm (UTC)(link)Part 27 - Clint
(Anonymous) 2024-08-25 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)A new normal was established. Steve was disappearing - that one wasn't new. He was definitely doing worse that usual, though; sometimes Clint felt sorry for the kid.
Other than that, things changed.
Banner and Stark took to healing their captive every other day, with occasinal few-days breaks for when the patient was taking it particularly badly.
Banner took to taking him out and bringing him back every time - always Banner, never Stark.
Stark took to avoiding the man he owned with admirable consistency, while also staying in his proximity with determination worthy of a man with a target.
Tasha took to splitting her time between staying with their guest and staying in one or more of her hiding spots around the city, over-the-woods roof only one of them.
Steve took to going to libraries and studiously avoiding Shield archives. He installed privacy tools on his previously-abandoned computer - Clint discreetly turned the eye of a certain spyware away from that - and generally took to being less well than usual in more ways than one.
Clint took to watching them all.
He spent his days in the common room now, eyes on the elevator door well-visible from the kitchen table, sipping coffees he drew smily faces on and doing crossword puzzles that may or may not be in 20 years old Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles magazines. We all have quirks.
With one half-a-sentence about socialisation, man, you know? at the precisely right time, Tony decided that his captive should be taken for a meal with everyone after each doctor's visit, and then roped their little Captain into attending.
"Think Cap will join in?"
"Who knows. Capsickle isn't doing great lately."
"Eh, I'm thinking he might. Duty, right? Taking care of the team, taking care of a wounded soldier. All his things. Not sure when I'll see him and have an opportunity to invite him, though."
Cap joined in.
Even Natasha joined, which he was actually a little proud of. The look she gave him told him immediately that she knew exactly what he was doing, but Clint wasn't trying to fool her. Just to get her to go along with it anyway. Looks were far less important than results when you didn't have to worry about the other person stabbing you.
Which with Natasha Clint didn't, most of the time.
The whole operation failed spectacularly two-thirds of the time, with their captive too exhausted to sit or stand, or their captive pale and swaying on his feet, or Banner pale and swaying on his feet, Stark looking like he wanted to puke, Stark puking on three memorable occasions, Tasha and Captain closed-off in remarkably similar fashion and captive refusing to eat alltogether.
(He would bet his right arm that Natasha was bringing him meals every night, so there was that).
He always had someone to observe, though. That was something.

(Anonymous) 2024-08-26 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)STILL GOING :))) Part 28 - Tony
(Anonymous) 2024-09-06 02:11 am (UTC)(link)They re-broke three bones in Man's body today.
Tony watched from the back-benches, but he had a good enough view. He saw the way Man was shaking when they told him. He saw the way he shook more when hands reached for him. He saw the way Bruce was shaking, too. They were equally white on their faces and the only reason only one of them passed out was because Bruce knew that he couldn't - not while Man needed him conscious.
Tony may have been shaking a little as well.
This was the one condition Man begged for - no drugs. He did take what they made him take - antibiotics, Bruce told him - but it never got any easier. Bruce decided to avoid every pill and injection that he could.
That included painkillers.
And this was the result.
Tony took a breath and walked to the middle of the room. He tried not to look as the nurses collected Man from the floor, dusting him off like the limp object that he was. He approached the other victim of this instead. He put a hand on a shaking shoulder.
"Sit down, Bruce." They had chairs in the examination room now.
Bruce shook his head stiffly. "No. I need to--" Man's limp body layed between them. "I need to meditate." He hesitated for a moment. "You'll take care of him?"
Tony tried to look reassuring. "I will."
It was apparently good enough for Bruce. "Thank you." His hands still shook. "Tony. Thank you."
Before anyone could react he was walking away, and Tony was left alone with the body of his charge and an army of cold, medical faces.
