Rules:
  • General
    1. YKINMKATO. Play nice. If you don't like something, scroll on.

    2. All comments must be anon. If you would like to be politely banned to avoid anon-failing, leave a logged-in comment on the mod post or pm the mod account.

    3. IP Logging is currently on. Only the mod can see them, and the mod will only be paying attention to them when threads turn wanky and she wants to identify comments made by the same person.

    4. Subject lines should only be changed if you're posting a prompt or a fill (indicators like OP or Author!Anon should go in the body of the comment).

    5. RPF is allowed. Crossovers, characters from the extended Marvel Universe (excluding characters from Jessica Jones) and comics canon are allowed, but must relate to the 2015 TV show in some way.

    6. Prompts involving characters from Jessica Jones (including crossovers with Daredevil characters or the extended MCU) must go on the Jessica Jones Prompt Post.

    7. Prompts that are exclusively about the comics should go on the Comics Prompt Post.

    8. Discussion not related to the prompt should be moved to the discussion/off-topic post.

    9. Drop a comment on the mod post if you have any questions or problems.

  • Prompts
    1. All types of prompts are welcome.

    2. Use the subject line for the main idea of your prompt (pairing or characters, keywords, kink).

    3. Warnings are nice, but not mandatory. Get DW Blocker if there's anything you really don't want to see.

    4. Reposted prompts are allowed once one round has passed - i.e., prompts from post #2 cannot be reposted until post #4. Please include a link to where it has been previously posted.

  • Fills
    1. Put [FILL] or something similar in the subject line when posting a fill.

    2. Announce your fill on either the Completed Fills Post or the WIP Post.

    3. Long fills can either be posted over multiple comments, or posted on AO3 and linked back here.

    4. Multiple fills are always okay.

    5. Fills can be anything! Fic, art and vids are all welcome.

    6. If it wasn't written specifically for the prompt, it doesn't count as a fill. You are welcome to provide a link to already existing fic that does fit the prompt, in case the prompter hasn't seen it, but it doesn't count as a fill.

Yeah, I mean I love my parents, but if I found out they kidnapped me, even 'for my own good', I'd be, uh, fucked up.

Though I think it's quite plausible that that's what the Nelsons told themselves, it's not what I think Foggy or Matt or anyone else would rationally conclude, like, a) postpartum depression can make mothers look bad but isn't the same, b) kidnapping is still a bad thing.

Now I'm picturing Foggy finding this out and not confronting his parents until much, much later because he *knows* that they would only have done it if they thought that it was *for him* and that means he can't really argue with them about it, they're too deeply set in their ways, but the pressure builds and builds until he just SNAPS

also this would make Foggy ever encountering/meeting Rosalind insanely awkward, even if she *knew* that he was her kidnapped child. like oh my god, can you even picture the hesitant, 'I don't even know how to relate to you, I last saw you when you were three months old, we have no real cultural background in common, but you were my baby and you're still my child and I loved you this whole time and I never stopped looking for you and you're a defense lawyer too'?

(now I'm tempted to write this as a Rosalind semi-fan)

(anon who suggested Rosalind as the bio-mom)

Yes, that's basically what I was thinking for the more sympathetic version of Rosalind--she never got to see Foggy grow up over time, so while she's making an effort to bond with him once they find each other, it's boatloads of awkward because he's basically a stranger.

And I didn't mean to let the Nelsons off the hook either! I meant to set it up as an internal conflict for Foggy--because on the one hand they were great parents and he loves them, but on the other hand they kidnapped him and that is Not Okay. And then there's Rosalind, who's trying her best but never really figured out how to be a mom because her kid got stolen from her as a baby, and on top of that maybe reacted to losing her kid with "I must never grow attached so that it won't hurt this much the next time I lose someone."

Though if you did want to let the Nelsons off the hook, it could be something like the original Face on the Milk Carton--IIRC, Janie's "parents" were actually her kidnapper Hannah's parents, who honestly believed that she was Hannah's daughter and had no idea Hannah had kidnapped her.

Ahh, that makes more sense. Yeah, I can totally see the Nelsons telling themselves and/or Foggy that too, and it totally fucking up Foggy--is he supposed to then think that it's okay to do terrible things to other people as long as it turns out okay? Is he supposed to put family desires above morals? How does he feel about his family?

I may yet write a minifill or three (Foggy finding out, Foggy telling Matt while drunk af on Mother's Day, Rosalind and Foggy meeting at a restaurant?)

OP here

In the book, I always felt it was a bit of a copout that her parents/grandparents had no control over the situation. I mean, how much more intense would that book have been if they were in fact her kidnappers? 10 year old me would've had her mind BLOWN.

I also didn't mean to imply that the whole, kidnapping is okay cause his original parents suck, was something you were moving towards. I just didn't want it to be as easy as it was in the book. Either way, I'm happy this prompted such a discussion. Even without a fill, this is fun to read.

There was a book I read back in college about a young woman who learned her father was basically a Nazi, and was on the run from the government. He was a good father and a good husband, but it still didn't change the fact he was a war criminal and had tortured and murdered hundreds of people. I thought the entire book was going to follow the daughter's journey of wondering what to do, but alas, it was only a short story.
