I actually legally changed my first name this past January, and writing about someone else doing it was surprisingly fun. Form CIV-GP-82 A is the NYC Petition for Individual Adult Change of Name.

The petition is surprisingly straight-forward. Maybe that’s why it takes until he gets the notification that his petition to proceed as a poor person, thus waiving the $65 filing fee, for it to really sink in that he’s legally changing his name to Foggy. It’s only a few days after he spent the afternoon in the Manhattan civil court and he’s thought about it, sure, but this is really the first time that he’s not thinking about this in abstract terms.

And he realizes that, just maybe, he’s in a little over his head.

Matt laughs when he tells him, the asshole. “How did you not think this through?” he asks. “Did you come up with this plan after a late night at Josie’s?”

“Of course not,” Foggy says. He’s a little insulted that Matt thinks he went ahead and did all of this while drunk. You don’t make it all the way through the filing process in the Manhattan civil court on a drunken whim. “Dave, from work, was making comments again, and I just…”

Something in Matt’s face softens as realization dawns on him. “Foggy, you can’t let him get to you,” he says. “Dave’s a dick to everyone, you know that.”

“I know that Matt,” Foggy snaps, and instantly feels bad for taking his frustrations out on his friend. “Sorry, sorry that wasn’t fair.”

“It’s fine, Foggy,” Matt says, but Foggy’s pretty sure he could punch his friend and Matt would still say that everything is fine so he’s never sure how much Matt means it. “There’s just one thing I’m still confused about. Are you freaking out because you don’t want to change your name, or because you’ve realized that you actually do?”

“I’m freaking out because I don’t know what I want!” Foggy groans and flops back down on Matt’s couch, covering his face with his arm. “I barely even remember that my legal name is Franklin these days, everyone I know just calls me Foggy. It would be so much easier to get it changed, but Dave’s right. Who would want to hire a lawyer named Foggy?”

“Screw Dave,” Matt says firmly. “Seriously, forget about him. What’s really stopping you?”

“What stopping me? What isn’t?” Foggy asks with a snort. “I’d have to change all my paperwork- everything on file at L & Z, all my student loan stuff and my diplomas and shit, my insurance, all of my legal identification and financial info… Shit, and I’d have to tell my entire family and you know my sister Candace would never let me live this down…”

“So don’t go through with it,” Matt says.

Foggy swallows harshly. “But I want to,” he admits softly. “I’m scared shitless but I still think I want to do this.”

“Then I’ll help you,” Matt says, as easily as if he was agreeing to help Foggy study for a final back at Columbia. “Seriously, we’ll make a list of everything that you need to do and I’ll go down to the court with you for your hearing and- oof!”

Foggy knocks the air out of Matt with the force of his hug, one that sends both of them stumbling back into one of Matt’s armchairs.

“You’re the best,” Foggy mutters against Matt’s neck. He’s not crying, but its damn close. “Seriously, thank you, I’d never go through with this on my own.”

“Sure you would,” Matt says, patting Foggy on the back. “You already did the hard part on your own, after all.”

Foggy just shakes his head and continues to hug his friend. “No, the hardest part is going to be telling my mom.” Matt winces at that and Foggy can’t help but dissolve into a fit of laughter.

He’s still scared shitless about the amount of work this is going to take, but he’ll get through this. With Matt, he’s pretty sure he could get through anything.

Yeah, name changes are a pain, but totally worth it. x) I got mine changed at 19 and a couple of my friends around the U.S. got theirs changed in the next couple of years, and there are definitely absolutely no regrets. #WorthIt

OP: this is a lovely fill thank you! I love the idea that his name change started out as a drunken whim, because let's face it, that sounds like Foggy all over. :)
