*sets up camp around this prompt*

"You should leave." Her heart's not beating and this reminds him of a dream he had, not so long ago: a dream about too many people and not enough heartbeats to fill up the space. The very last thing he wants is for her to walk deliberately across his trashed apartment and stand over him, tsking in reproof, because that makes it that much harder to tell if he's dreaming or not. She doesn't smell right. That doesn't rule out a dream: Matt has been having terrible sensory nightmares since he was nine years old.

She smells like blood, though.

The smell of his own blood never interrupts Matt's sleep; he knows it too well. Vanessa's woman, though: he knows that she's standing in front of him and her heart isn't beating and he doesn't have his phone.

"You shouldn't be here," he says. Years of meditation, years of iron control, and he still can't quite keep the adrenaline from hitting: he's afraid of her. It has to be a nightmare, that's all, he fell asleep after Foggy left, but he can't wake himself up, and she doesn't have a heartbeat, and he doesn't want to run from her. Running would make it...real.

"He should've been gentler on you," she says, which is nonsense, does she know what Fisk is capable of? "You look half-dead." Her hand is cold on his face, and she rubs a thumb across the cut on his lip: it's surprising enough that he gasps and tries to jerk away, gropes to shove her off; "still lovely, though. Ah well. Next time, hm?" she says, and sucks his blood off her fingers.

"This. This isn't - real," he tells her. She's caught his hand in one of hers, delicate, strong fingers circling his wrist loosely. He knows seven different ways to break the hold.

"If it makes it easier for you, I suppose?"

She's not the first person to bite him: he'd tangled with a mugger, very early on, who'd panicked and tried absolutely everything to get away, up to and including biting and tearing at the flesh on Matt's forearm. He knew the smell of human saliva, the blunt desperate pressure of human teeth, the sickeningly quick rate of infection.

It's nothing like that. She shoved his jaw back and dove down like a viper, and (he has) to be dreaming: savagely precise fangs, four sharp points of entry, more like being stabbed in the throat and less like a ripping human bite.

He choked: he would've screamed, because it hurt, but he couldn't - he couldn't - he couldn't breathe, lungs empty and gasping, grasping for air, and through the pain he could hear her sucking at the - the blood pumped rapidly out of the hole in his throat.

He woke up to the warmth of sun on his face. His skin blazed with pain; he didn't want to move the left arm, and every time he took a breath it felt like knives in his side.

The dream of a woman with no heart - because it had to be a dream, there were no wounds in his throat - stuck with him for a few hours, while he washed, as best as he could, and while he cleaned his face and hands and slowly, achingly dressed himself. (Every time he moved he found another wound, his body felt like an unfolding map of pain.) He jumped at noises, at air currents, but there was no one in the apartment: it wasn't rational, to believe that people could simply walk around with no heartbeats. He was alone, and he was safe, and his subconscious was just a right bastard.
