We can all agree that a certain Matt Murdock esq. is definitely one of those self-sacrificing heroic types who think that it's better they go all lone wolf than actual surround themselves with a healthy support network. He's getting better, but say something happens post-s1, and he thinks that it'd be better and safer for Karen and Foggy if they were kept out of it. So he leaves, either without telling them or staging some sort of faked walk-out so they won't go looking for him. It'd be better for them, he tells himself.

He manages six months before he sorts whatever the danger is/ he can't stand it anymore and goes back to his family to grovel for forgiveness because he just misses them so much. He's expecting surprise and anger.

He is not expecting to learn that his leaving broke Foggy's heart.

Turns out Matt was as much Foggy's support network as he was Matt's. And in the six months he's been yo-yoing between feeling betrayed that Matt left and being terrified he's dead down an alley somewhere. He's not eating, not sleeping, and he drinks far more than is healthy. The business is running fine, but it's clear that and Karen's support are the only things Foggy's getting out of bed for.

Karen's spent six months watching her friend fall apart because of Matt. And when he comes back, well, she'll be damned if he thinks he can just waltz back in like nothing happened.

TL;DR: Matt leaves, Foggy's heartbroken. Cue protective!Karen and slow rebuilding of friendship when he comes back.

This reminds me of that one episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer were Buffy runs away to LA and then comes back and is greeted with all the pain and worry she's caused everyone while still not being emotionally supported by any of her friends and family so she tries to run away again....

I don't know if any anons have seen it, but it was a very realistic portly of this situation and something similar would make the prompt so much more whumpy.

(Or if Karen relents in her hard ass stick and is able to support Matt and make him want to stay.)

That was 3x1, "Anne". It was right after the whole Angelus mess, if you need the context for why Buffy's so traumatized.
