[gen] accidental vigilante mentor Matt Murdock

(Anonymous) 2015-07-05 01:05 pm (UTC)(link)
so for some reason or another, Matt finds himself teaming up with, say, Spider-Man. all well and good, at least up until he figures out Spider-Man's like seventeen, and he ends up probably lecturing the poor guy for being a CHILD and SWINGING AROUND IN A COSTUME and then makes him, idk, some kind of comfort food since he's injured and Matt's first instinct when confronted with kids boils down to something like keep them safe and comfortable and also safe

and then it spreads. and suddenly Matt's the unofficial vigilante big brother to any teenaged superhero in and around New York.

Matt would like them all to stop following him now, please.

BONUS FOR:
+ Kamala Khan you guys. or Kate Bishop. or America Chavez. or, seriously, Inwill love you if you can somehow squeeze as many baby superheroes as you can, they don't even have to make sense, I would kill for Spider-Gwen okay.
+ Foggy walks in on Matt feeding like a bunch of beat-up teenaged superheroes with the grumpiest look on his face
+ IMPROMPTU VIGILANTE SLEEPOVER AT MATT'S. preferably while he's out. "how the fuck did you all get in here" he probably hisses when he realizes they're conked out in his apartment, before signing and sort of draping blankets over all of them
+ Matt's Terrible Training Methods.

Yes I am so here for grumpy babysitter Matt

Re: [gen] accidental vigilante mentor Matt Murdock

eventually his place becomes Teenaged Vigilante Central, like, "go to Matt Murdock's place, yes, the blind lawyer, he makes the best sandwiches" and it is not uncommon to find, like, at least one superhero crashing on his couch

it gets to the point where most of them are staying there on a semi-permanent basis, ie the orphans and the kids who don't want to go back to their families, and they've moved half their stuff in already

("Matt" says Foggy "is this a comic book"

"oh that" says Matt, flapping a hand "I think that's Kamala's? or Sam's. what's on the cover?")

Imagine something like that one episode in Ultimate Spiderman where they all had to move in with Peter because the helicarrier blew up. That could be a reason why they all had that sleepover at Matt's. And then it turned into them semi-permanently moving in.

Re: [gen] accidental vigilante mentor Matt Murdock

Matt's apartment rapidly becomes like

this halfway house for teenaged superheroes who don't want to or can't go home somehow, and also for teenaged superheroes who do have a home but it's outside of town and they need a place to stay

a bunch of them have moved at least half of, if not all their things into Matt's place, probably with some helpful Braille lettering after the first disaster ("OH MY GOD NO DON'T TOUCH THAT MATT--aaaaagh I told you not to touch it")

Foggy will not stop ribbing Matt about his collection of teenaged vigilantes

matt, as Designated Adult, winds up being someone's cover story when their parents blow up their phone at 3am.

("WHERE IS MY KID?"

"uh. um. it's a. church sleepover thing. i'm chaperoning. everyone is leaving room for jesus.")

Matt's terrible training methods

Nooo this was such a cute prompt and then you broke my heart. Even if he was trying to be gentler than Stick, he still doesn't know what an appropriate training level/intensity is. Now I just see him practicing holds with one kid while the others watch. He thinks it's going well (can't hear any bones creaking) until the others start yelling for him to stop bc he's hurting their friend. When he lets go, the kid crawls away and the others either back up or prepare to defend against him. He realizes their heartbeats are going berserk out of fear

I will also give my left arm for. like. baby superheroes being incredibly protective of Matt, both as Matt and as Daredevil. basically people like Spider-Man who are good with heights keep an eye on Matt on their regular patrol routes, since he's a lawyer who has a habit of making many enemies in his day job, and scaring off people who might decide to try their luck against a blind guy

and like when they team up with him they look out for each other

maybe sometimes they overdo it and Matt's like "jfc you assholes I can, in fact, take care of myself"

(but he is very protective of them in turn, like, if somebody tries to fuck with them in their secret identities Daredevil pops up out of fucking nowhere like "what the hell are you doing"

do not mess with his charges ok he will fuck you up)

one day matt comes stumbling home half-dead and unwilling to seek out adequate medical help like he do, and they all look up from their pizza party on his couch like oh hell no

never has a criminal organization been dismantled so quickly and so publicly and so embarrassingly as the one that almost got Daredevil, and then the next day got plastered all over social media falling at the hands of a bunch of very protective teens with powers

meanwhile matt is at home all "oh my god no stop it's dangerous that's dangerous i can carry the weight of the world by myself its fine"

"Look," says Matt, "you guys really need to stop following me."

Spider-Man coughs. He's dangling upside down again, suspended on a thin yet surprisingly strong thread of webbing. Stuck to the wall, bruised up and unconscious, are the two thugs that Matt had been luring to the alleyway for information.

"They were going to beat you up," says Spider-Man. "What was I supposed to do? I mean, I'd miss your grilled cheese something fierce, man!"

Matchmaking baby vigilantes!

"Matt, you should date Foggy."

"*sips tea* Date Foggy, huh?"

"Yeah! He's cute and he's so nice and smart and he's already your best friend, and he knkws everything about you and he hasn't run away yet! You should totally date him!"

"But what if I don't want to date him, Kamala. Even if it wasn't dangerous--"

"Duh, Matt? You totally want to date him. If you could see your own face when you listen to him you would realize what a Gigantic Liar, Liar Pants on Fire that you are. Whenever he says something to you, your face gets all soft and squishy looking. It's actually kind of gross."

"...soft and squishy, huh?"

Matt finally runs them out of the apartment for what he insists is not a date (it totally is) and at three AM Spidey, Kamala, Wiccan and Miss America to see if they're having sex and they just see...Matt and Foggy passed out on the couch together. Eventually they find out Matt fell asleep thirty minutes in because he's so exhausted from lawyering, Daredeviling, and being a de facto single parent to a bunch of supers.

("Oh my god his face does that squishy thing when he's asleep too!"

"Holy shit he fell straight asleep. Is Foggy a mutant. Does he have Matt-oriented super powers.")

OKAY SO this is mostly just an attempt by the OP to try and corral together all the stuff everybody here's been coming up with because WOW you guys. I love everyone in this thread rn.

--

It starts off small, is the thing--or, rather, it starts off big, with a team-up between Daredevil, Spider-Man, Hawkeye (the new one, the protege), and Ms. Marvel. That gets on the news quickly enough, and the headlines don't stop chattering about it for days.

What doesn't get on the news is this:

"What the hell," says Daredevil--blind lawyer Matt Murdock, apparently, and Peter'd be a lot more shocked about that, but as things stand right now he's kind of dizzy from the blood loss. "No, what are you--what are you doing, you're kids."

"Hey, excuse you," says Kate (call me Kate, not Katie or Katie-Kate, it's either Kate or Hawkeye), "I'm eighteen."

"Kids," Murdock repeats.

Peter says, "Strictly speaking, we're teenagers. Also, did you know there's two of you? Or three."

Kamala lets out a breath. "There's just one of him, Spider-Man," she says, sounding surprisingly calm for someone who's also currently pressing some very bloodstained towels to her own side.

"You're teenagers," Murdock says, his tone slightly strangled. "Okay, I--you know what? I'll take Spider-Man, Hawkeye takes Ms. Marvel. I'm taking you to--to a friend of mine, she's a nurse, and then we're going to go back to my apartment." He lets out a breath, pulls on the mask again. "And then I'm going to need to know your parents' numbers, because I'm not letting either of you go back home with gunshot wounds."

--

"Hello? Is this May Parker?"

"Yes, I'm May--is it Peter? Is he all right?"

"I'm Matthew Murdock, and--yes, your nephew's fine. I, uh. Um. He's. Part of a church sleepover. I'm chaperoning."

"A church sleepover."

"Yes. There's nothing untoward happening here, ma'am, I swear."

"Let me talk to my nephew first, Mr. Murdock."

--

"Kamala! Where have you--"

"Um. Hello, ma'am? I'm Matthew Murdock. Your daughter, she's, uh, sleeping over at my place. She's fine! It's an inter-faith sleepover. Nothing untoward is happening."

"Where is my daughter."

--

"You know," says Kamala, meditatively, after Matt's managed to calm her mother down with absolute bullshit worthy of a lawyer, "that actually went a lot better than I thought it would."

"I'm going to order something in," Matt says, running a hand through his hair. He looks a little frazzled. Kamala's very sorry to him, and his friend Claire. "Just--is there anything any of you are allergic to?"

"I can't eat pork," Kamala volunteers.

"I'm lactose intolerant," Peter says.

"Do you drink coffee out of the pot?" Kate asks.

Matt shakes his head, looking offended by the question.

"Great," says Kate. "Just checking. Also, try the pizza place downtown--Clint swears by their pizzas."

--

And that's how it starts.

Karen and Foggy (and also Claire) tho like

the baby vigilantes are so protective of them too. part of it is because they're Matt's people, and also because they're all civilians--sure, Karen's a good shot, and Foggy's got a mean swing with his baseball bat, and Claire is literally the best (Claire's cabinets are currently filled with tokens of gratitude from the various teenaged and non-teenaged vigilantes she finds herself stitching up, when did she become Hell's Kitchen's Superhero Nurse jfc), but like. they're civilians, they don't have special skills or superpowers, and they're in danger a lot.

so cue Spider-Man occasionally following Karen or Foggy along on their routes, cue Silk checking regularly on Metro General, cue Billy getting all three of them to donate, like, samples of their body (like your hair) to use just in case they ever go missing (and when they do it isn't just Matt who comes looking for them, it's him and the teenaged vigilantes who have imprinted on him like ducks, the bad guys all piss their pants and the smart ones run like hell)

and also, bc Foggy and Karen have p much adopted them, like. Foggy totally sneaks the younger kids sweet foods and desserts and chips that Matt pretends to disapprove of, and he entertains a bunch of them with the butcher story all the time, and Karen's like, the most helpful when it comes to homework, she sits down with whoever needs her help and helps them work through the concepts and everything. Claire is like the cool aunt who stitches them up when she can and probably like, sneaks them little treats on occasion. they all chip in bc Matt can get p overwhelmed with becoming like, de facto Single Dad to a bunch of pretend and teens with superpowers and an inexplicable tendency to Do The Right Thing No Matter What.

Matt is just. really happy that they're getting along so well.

and all the of the baby vigilantes being purposefully awkward and deflecting questions from other superheroes about Daredevil's identity, cause you know, Matt is theirs.

Kate: 'The point of a mask is to stop people seeing his face.'

Spiderman to the Avengers 'Who Daredevil? Worked with him once or twice, but he likes to keep his card close to his chest' and meanwhile Wanda is wondering why images of grilled cheese sandwiches keep popping into Peter's head.

Matt Murdock’s Halfway House for Troubled Teenage Superheroes

(Anonymous) 2015-07-07 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
He doesn’t mean to take Spider-Man home with him. It just kind of...happens. Firstly because Spider-Man is way out of his territory -- Matt is a little bit impressed that he’s managed to make it all the way out to Hell’s Kitchen considering it’s a school night. Secondly Spider-Man is, well, out on a school night when he’s clearly no older than sixteen, and it doesn’t feel right to shove him off towards home when blood is soaking through his mask like that.

Thirdly, Matt feels responsible. It isn’t Spider-Man’s fault that Leap-Frog doesn’t have a sense of humor so he shouldn’t be punished for taking on what amounts to Matt’s out of control pet.

He leaves Vinnie Patilio tied up for the cops to find. Matt feels extra spiteful because of the damage done to Spider-Man’s poor head and leaves Patilio in his stupid costume. That’ll make it up to Brett a little for having to carry the guy back to the station. (God he can’t believe this guy has a pseudonym like Leap-Frog. At least Matt has some dignity about the whole thing.)

Then Matt calls Claire, because what else can he do?

“Hey. It’s me. Uh-- no, it’s not for me this time. I’ve got a...colleague? that needs attention. Yes, I’m being serious.” Matt frowns and uses his free hand to touch Spider-Man’s head. The mask is too, too wet and the teenager groans under Matt’s touch. “He’s bleeding from his head. It’ll take ten minutes and then --” Matt hits on inspiration. “-- and then I’ll take him home with me! We’ll be out of your business in no time!”

This would eventually prove to be a mistake. Matt has no idea what kind of person Spider-Man is and he has no idea how this decision will launch several bombshells into his life later on.

Right now he doesn’t care. It’s the right thing to do.

He hauls Spider-Man a few streets down to Claire’s place. When Spider-Man wakes up to Claire stitching his head wound closed, Matt finds out that his name is Peter Parker, he’s fifteen years old, he’s still in high school, his favorite subjects are chemistry and physics, Claire is really pretty and wow my head hurts, can I take something for that?

“This is your fault,” Claire hisses out of the corner of her mouth.

“No it isn’t!” Matt hisses back. Wait. It isn’t his fault, right? He’s not responsible for headstrong teenagers and their stupid, stupid ways. Spider-Man made headlines before Daredevil did anything bigger than beat up pickpockets.

“I’m right here you know,” Peter says. “Do you mind if I throw up? I’m pretty sure I’m gonna throw up in a second. My head hurts, it really really hurts.”

Matt is sheepish enough to promise that he’ll buy Claire a new rug. She accepts but only on the condition that he takes Peter home with him. As for himself, Peter feels thoroughly wretched about the whole thing, enough that he actually offers up his pittance of an allowance to help pay for that new rug. Matt promises to consider it and takes him back to the loft.

It’s a strange night spent there. Matt gingerly lets Peter inside, listens to the muffled “holy shit!” when the billboard gets spotted. Peter promises that he doesn’t need the bed or the couch, and proves his point by climbing the wall and spinning a web for himself in the corner of the ceiling to sleep in. Matt realizes at some point that his mouth has fallen open in shock, and he shuts it with a snap.

“Do you need to check my pulse or anything?” Peter asks.

“Don’t worry about it,” Matt reassures him. “If anything happens to you, I’ll know.”

“That’s not creepy at all Mr. Daredevil.”

Matt scowls. “Go to sleep,” he says in what he hopes is an authoritative voice. “You have school in the morning.”

“Yes, dad.”

The night is a fitful one. Matt sleeps in starts and gaps while listening to Peter Parker’s heartbeat and breathing. Eventually, around six, he finally falls asleep, only for his alarm to wake him an hour later. Irate, he drags himself out of the bedroom, hacking and spitting in that way that always drove Elektra up the wall, and helps himself to the pot of coffee that mysteriously made itself before he woke completely.

There’s a note beside it. Matt tugs off his gloves with his teeth and tries tracing the letters but the indents are faint, and he can catch a faint T and an S. He glares at nothing and resolves to take it to work with him.

“Foggy!” He’s too loud and too grumpy but God forgive him, he’s running on only one hour of sleep and his adolescent charge disappeared before Matt could make sure he was okay. Matt shoves the note in Foggy’s face. “What does this say?”

“Hi Matt. Good morning to you too. Lovely day we’re having, isn’t it? It’s doing wonders for your attitude.” Matt groans and waves the note again. “Okay, okay, give it here.”

Foggy reads it. He reads it again.

“Holy shit Matt, it -- it says -- ‘Hey pal, thanks for the lift, my head am doing think now good. Let’s do this again sometime -- your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man?!’”

“There was another line,” Matt insists. “I felt it.”

“Yeah it’s -- it’s a phone number. Whoa, I think he just gave you permission to text him.”

Matt frowns, trying to work out why Spider-Man would want to text him when he feels his phone buzz in his pocket. This is when he remembers he left his phone on the counter to charge before suiting up last night.

The phone buzzes again. And again. And again. Matt forces his numbing lips apart and says, “Oh, no, what have I done.”

Okay so I'm seeing a bunch of stuff with Matt being a horrible actor and worrying parents (which is hilarious) but, like, what if he just tells, for instance, Kamala's parents. "She came over to study with Kate, but they're both asleep. Is it okay if she stays the night?"
Because I feel like that would go over a lot better and also it would bring up a lot of feelings if he, say, referred to one of them as his kids.
Cue the Baby Superhero Club ("It's all Peter's fault!") calling Matt 'Mom' and him trying to act all annoyed but everyone can clearly see he's tearing up.
("IT'S THE LIGHT." Matt insists, and sniffs.
"You're blind, Matt." Peter reminds helpfully.
"SHUT UP I HAVE SOMETHING IN MY EYE."
"I thought it was the light?" Kamala says with a smirk.
"THE LIGHT GOT SOMETTHING IN MY EYE, OKAY?"
"That's not poss--" Kate is suddenly cut off.
"DON'T QUESTION ME OR YOU'RE GROUNDED."
"It's okay," Peter says, "we love you too, Mom."
Matt is totally not crying during the huge pile that is the group hug.)
