"I could get to like you like this, Daredevil," he says, while shoving a large phallic object into the face of a guy sprawled on his back.

Yeah. I think they knew what they were doing. :D

ayrt

the area i live in has a really bad alcoholism problem, because everyone starts drinking young (because there's nothing else to do). we were all definitely drunk XD

I think, in Matt's case, that was a nice moment between his and his dad that means something to him. I think it's also where it all started for him that his father was making a lot of money from losing which will stem Matt's guilt of when his father gets killed for finally winning. Also, his comment afterwards of 'Can I take the bottle?' when he has to go do homework - my parents let me have sips of beer but I never asked if I could just have the rest of the can. So maybe that's why he counts it as his first?

And, I had my first drink when I was 12. Friend and I stole a mickey of vodka from her parents and drank it in a nearby ravine. We thought we were the coolest.

Quite frankly, I couldn't even tell you. I probably drank a leftover tiny sip from the bottom of a beer bottle at a party when I was quite young (younger than 10, I'd say), and probably found it really yucky, cause... bitter!

I have also no idea when I consciously had my first alcoholic drink. It was probably French cider, which has a ridiculously low ABV (around 2%, I think). And I guess I was around 18. But it wasn't a big deal or a milestone or anything.

I was never the party girl, and was never in it for the alcohol. Not that I'm a prude or anything, but I can honestly say that I have never in my life been so drunk that I've puked or couldn't remember things. And I'm close to Elden Henson's age. :-) Does that make me boring? Quite possibly, but I can't say I feel like I've missed out on any life experiences there.

These days, I like a nice glass of strong cider or a cocktail if I feel adventurous. Never was a beer or wine drinker, and I live in the beer country!

Re: Does Matt think his mom is dead?

SAYRT: You're right, it could be someone other than his mum. I guess my mind just went there straight away, but it's also not unrealistic that it's someone else. Though I have to say from the answering machine text we hear at the beginning, it very much did not sound like it was a nun.

Law school stuff?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Can anyone out there provide me, and anyone else who knows nothing about this stuff, with a few bits of legal technobabble to pepper our stories with?

See, if I write Matt and Foggy in law school for example, I'd love to be able to give the name of a class they are taking, or something they are likely to be studying or writing a paper on, or the name of a book that they would possibly have to read. Anything like that really, just to give the whole thing a bit of authenticity, you know?

I noticed the name of one class came up in a fic a few months back (Torts or something?) and every appeared to kind of latch onto it, and it's been mentioned in a whole lot of fics since, and that's great, but is there anything else we could use?

hahaha Oh my god, Torts. I have NO idea what that is, but I see it everywhere.

Re: Law school stuff?

Lol yeah, I think it's the only thing people know, and they only know it from fic. The first fic to mention it was really good though, so I'm not surprised how much it's spread throughout the fandom!

Well, you could always look at the actual Columbia Law School for help. Here's a Wikipedia article, which gives some great general areas of study (e.g., "Civil Rights" or "Legal Philosophy"): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbia_Law_School#Columbia_Law_School_today

Or you could play around with their interactive curriculum guide: http://web.law.columbia.edu/courses/search

It's a place to start, anyhow.

SA: Or you could noodle around on the faculty page, and see what that faculty member is currently teaching:
http://www.law.columbia.edu/faculty

Professor Dorf apparently taught in 2006-2007, which is several years before our heros got to law school, but he did include syllabi for his classes on the website: http://www.law.columbia.edu/faculty/faculty_pages/Dorf/

(SA again, shamefacedly explaining why she searched down syllabi)
...which syllabi will give you readings, to help with the believable assignments bit.

Devil In Cell Block D

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Some relevant pages detailing the relationship between Matt and Frank in this particular arc, the 6 issue arc being where Matt has been accused of being Daredevil and is awaiting trial in prison. After Matt arrives in his new temporary home, Kingpin shows up in his cell block, and then right behind him comes Bullseye. At the height of all this we get Frank Castle who reads the paper, sees what's going on, and kills a guy to get arrested and thrown in jail with Matt. Seriously. To get an even better idea of how Matt and Frank feel about each other, please read all the issues because there're so many factors to weigh, it's hard to get a real sense from these pages alone, but at least this is a small taste of what's found there.

If you're new to comics, I'd like to leave a friendly reminder that every panel in sequential art has to mean something. There's a limited amount of space on a page, there's a limited amount of pages in an issue, and you'll have to learn to look beyond the text to what's not said, and also to pay attention to the subtext in the art. People have said they don't know how to read comics, so let me just say I understand that completely. It can be a little bit of a cipher at first, and frustrating if you've never done it before, but please don't let it stop you because once you get the hang of it, particular creative teams are SO GOOD at what they do, it will blow your mind how much of a story is said without being explicitly stated. :)

I'm going to put these on imgur instead of my tumblr so you can hover over the page and option to read at full resolution, but if you have trouble opening them lmk:

lolol I think we're cruising two very different sets of folks in fandom. The ONLY place I ever see that 'Matt is a racist murderer' hilarity is on tumblr and here on the km, and it seems like a very small circle of friends who all agree with each other very loudly. I kept them on my dash for a little while until they also became the same group of people who were bashing prompts and fills from here and publicly posting excerpts and screenshots of 'bad' DD fanfics on AO3 and that's when I cut them loose. The vaaaast majority of this fandom has been so good and friendly and fun and rational, and I'm glad for that.

Re: Law school stuff?

I have a friend studying law, and I asked them once what it meant (I think they were getting a book on it out of the library or something).

From what I can remember, I think Tort Law is to do with negligence or malpractice. It's a blanket term that covers all the rights to do with if someone has been negatively affected/sustained injury through someone else's actions, and would be invoked if anyone is brought to trail for damages. So, Tort Law would cover a situation where say I was walking down an aisle in a supermarket and slipped on a wet patch that hadn't been cleaned up. I (the plaintiff) would be then liable to bring the store (defendant) to court on negligence charges.

There's three types of torts, I think. Negligence is one, intentional is another (so that covers when one party intentionally causes harm to another, so fraud or assault), and I think the last one which I can't remember the proper name of is something to do with if the plaintiff is harmed even if the defendant wasn't negligent per se but was in possession of something dangerous (so if you get bitten by someone's dog).

Hope this helps! (although as I'm not a lawyer, maybe double check for accuracy) :D

i think probably around 13 or 14, i was allowed champagne at a new years' party. my first drink was when i was about 17 and i forced myself to finish a glass of cabernet because i wanted the bragging rights (bad choice because it was absolutely revolting to me).

i actually had some port last night with my friends, but more of a sip, and i actually enjoyed that wine. i can't really say i was ever drunk, though (i'm 18 now by the way!)

i live in a town where almost all people my age party and probably drink but i just don't get out much and don't enjoy partying/drinking to get drunk, so eh.
