How old were you when you had your first drink?

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Because that seemed like a pretty weird question to me. I wonder if there was some history behind it, part of the conversation that we didn't see. If someone asked me that, I would have no idea, but I would have been around the age Matt was. Okay, I wasn't sewing up anyones face at the time, and I don't think it was whiskey, but my parents would let me have wine or bitter shandy sometimes. Is that weird? Because it seems normal to me.

So, how old were you guys when you had your first drink? Those of you that have, that is. Seriously, I'm interested.

honestly, when matt said he was ten or whatever, i was like oh...that counts?? :') because yeah i'm the same, my parents would let me have sips of stuff at parties/new year when i was a kid. but if someone asked when i had my first drink, i would be thinking about the first time i had a proper drink, y'know? which i guess would be around 14/15 or something...

Same. I know I tried wine and whiskey when I was 10-11, but, like, a taste (like we see with Matt and Jack). I had my first real drink in my teens sometime.

OP
Good, not just me then!
Yeah, I wouldn't have counted that as a first drink either. To me, having a drink means having your own glass or bottle and actually sitting down with people (Or alone I guess, if you're that way inclined!) and drinking the whole thing. I might even have taken that question to mean when you first got drunk, which is something else entirely.

I wonder if Matt maybe said that because between then college he didn't drink, and he didn't want to say he was 18 or 20 or whatever (what's the drinking age in New York, anyway? 21?) because he wanted Foggy to think he was cool, and being in college boozing is cool, but he didn't want to lie, so therefore technically that was he first drink...
Or something.

First full drink? My 18th birthday (in a country where this is legal drinking age).

But as a teenager my Dad often let me, and my younger brother, have sips of his beer at parties and such. Mostly it confirmed for me that I didn't like beer but it was technically my first drink. I guess?

Depends. First time I had a sip of beer was like when I was 9-ish, though it more to deter me from being curious about it later. But other than that, I have the whole timeline of first time drinking.

The first time I had a drink and wasn't immediately "Blegh" was probably when I was 14-15ish, and it was a sort of appley white wine, given to me by my grandpa. I was sixteen when I had my first drink from a bar at my mom's wedding (Long Island Iced Tea, and let me tell you. Do not have one of those unless you're looking to get tipsy almost immediately). I was 18 when I had vodka and Aquavit for the first time (and it was almost one after another, almost as good an idea as the two Long Island Iced Teas). I also learned not to give into peer pressure from Swedish cousins and take them as shots.

Ohhh, Long Island Iced Tea, I love that. When I was doing my year abroad at college there was this club that had a happy hour where all cocktails were buy one get one free, and they were pretty cheap anyway, I used to get so wasted...

I'm not American (I actually live in a pretty poor, rural area of Canada), but I can remember my classmates and I sneaking alcohol and getting drunk as early as 11 or 12, so.

A friend of mine once made a 'cocktail' by pouring a little bit of all the drinks in her parent' liquor cabinet into a flask and brought it to school for us to share. It was disgusting, and we all thought were drunk, but probably weren't really because none of the teachers noticed. We'd have been around 12 then. Good times :-)

I live in the U.S.-

18, and I was with college friends.

Drinking in HS was pretty common.

I think, in Matt's case, that was a nice moment between his and his dad that means something to him. I think it's also where it all started for him that his father was making a lot of money from losing which will stem Matt's guilt of when his father gets killed for finally winning. Also, his comment afterwards of 'Can I take the bottle?' when he has to go do homework - my parents let me have sips of beer but I never asked if I could just have the rest of the can. So maybe that's why he counts it as his first?

And, I had my first drink when I was 12. Friend and I stole a mickey of vodka from her parents and drank it in a nearby ravine. We thought we were the coolest.

Quite frankly, I couldn't even tell you. I probably drank a leftover tiny sip from the bottom of a beer bottle at a party when I was quite young (younger than 10, I'd say), and probably found it really yucky, cause... bitter!

I have also no idea when I consciously had my first alcoholic drink. It was probably French cider, which has a ridiculously low ABV (around 2%, I think). And I guess I was around 18. But it wasn't a big deal or a milestone or anything.

I was never the party girl, and was never in it for the alcohol. Not that I'm a prude or anything, but I can honestly say that I have never in my life been so drunk that I've puked or couldn't remember things. And I'm close to Elden Henson's age. :-) Does that make me boring? Quite possibly, but I can't say I feel like I've missed out on any life experiences there.

These days, I like a nice glass of strong cider or a cocktail if I feel adventurous. Never was a beer or wine drinker, and I live in the beer country!

i think probably around 13 or 14, i was allowed champagne at a new years' party. my first drink was when i was about 17 and i forced myself to finish a glass of cabernet because i wanted the bragging rights (bad choice because it was absolutely revolting to me).

i actually had some port last night with my friends, but more of a sip, and i actually enjoyed that wine. i can't really say i was ever drunk, though (i'm 18 now by the way!)

i live in a town where almost all people my age party and probably drink but i just don't get out much and don't enjoy partying/drinking to get drunk, so eh.

the drinking age is 18 here in australia, so naturally everyone has their first drink at 16. the standard for underage drinkers are vodka cruisers (i think they're called alcopops in the u.s??) or goon/goon sack, which is four litres of cheap boxed wine + the best way to drink it is using a hills hoist: you hang the sack on a clothes line and drink straight from the nozzle, very classy stuff lmao.

my first drink was at my brothers 16th birthday, i was 16 (a couple weeks off 17) at the time + had never had a drink so a couple of his girlfriends convinced me to try a cruiser. it was this windex-looking blueberry one that i had to drink over the kitchen sink b/c i couldn't keep it down (i gagged after every sip, it was so embarrassing) i'm 20 now + still no better at drinking, i just don't enjoy it.

I was 16 or 17. I am german and here the legal drinking age for "softer" stuff (beer and wine) is 16. If your are over 18 you can buy strong stuff too.

I have a vivid memory of being about 10 and on holiday in Tenerife with family- my grandmother got me to try an olive, and when I didn't like it, handed me her red wine to wash it down with. Needless to say, this didn't help, and I'm fairly sure I just sat there spluttering until someone took pity on me and passed a glass of water!

But properly, I definitely had an alcopop or 2 with a friend's family at the age of about 15, first time having a full drink to myself. My parents were relatively chill about allowing the occasional drink with dinner (not spirits) when it wasn't a school night.
First time I got properly tipsy (I've never been very drunk) was during undergrad.
