Nonnie, I stepped my toes into DD fandom on reddit and found out the hard way that the mainstream non-fannish media fandom pool for Daredevil? Is freaking full of lawyers. There was a raging, very civil, very passive-aggressive argument over something to do with Matt Murdock and it ended up citing so much factual legalese I just backed away slowly. I should have known DD fandom would be full of lawyers. I should have known.

I'm sorry, I didn't bookmark it or anything and this was more than a month ago. I basically ran away with my tail between my legs because holy crikey INTIMIDATING. You might be able to google for DD arguments that are lawyered up, because that seems like very specific threads google might have, yknow?

lololol omg okay I'm the ayrt and while that's not the same raging debate I bumped into, that one is really cool, too. Interestingly, in the comics the reason Matt needs to keep his secret identity is because if he's unmasked it going to shed light on every legal case he had a hand in while being DD. And he does get disbarred in NY eventually, and has to go practice law in CA (the only state where, if you have already passed the bar prior to being disbarred elsewhere, you can still legally practice law). So this article makes me chuckle, because it's really not a good idea for Matt to be an unmasked DD while also being a lawyer. Conflict of interest is an actual thing, yo.

Just FYI person above, to clarify California isn't the only state where you can practice law if you were disbarred somewhere else.

The reason Matt practices there is because it's the only other state that he had already passed the bar in and was able to practice law in and he hadn't been disbarred there yet. There was a whole arc decades ago where he lived in California, which is why he could do that.

The idea being that in any other state he would actually have to apply to be a lawyer and pass the bar there, and they wouldn't let him if they found out he'd been disbarred somewhere else.

That's what I took away from the explanation given in the comics. It'd be pretty weird if California was just like "Hey, all disbarred lawyers come on down! We want you here!"
