a question about fandom

(Anonymous) 2015-07-26 12:24 pm (UTC)(link)
i've never been this interested in a thing before (sure, i've dipped my toes into other fandoms but i have cannonballed/belly-flopped into this one) so i only have limited knowledge regarding fandom + i was just wondering if it's typical for a fandom to be super nitpicky about innocuous details or is the daredevil fandom just particularly prone to nitpicking?? i'm not bagging anyone out, no-one's been rude in their nitpicking + it's not an issue (in fact, it can be pretty helpful), i'm just curious!!

I started writing fanfiction for the first time specifically for this kink meme and have had a really positive experience so far.

If you are debating on commenting or filling a prompt I say dooooo iiiiiitttt.

nah, it's normal. I'm in ASOIAF fandom, there is a LOT of dissecting and nitpicking going on there, especially re: tiny details, as that is what happens when you have to wait between books and the show adaptation makes shit look like gold. granted, people in this fandom can be a hell of a lot nicer than ASOIAF fandom when it comes to nitpickery.

fandom can be pretty nitpicky! sometimes over the weirdest details. it kind of varies, I guess.

100% normal. Even more so now, with Tumblr and super slo-mo gifsets that scrutinize even the smallest facial expression that you'd never notice watching the show normally. Also, dialogue and character interaction. Everyone interprets something differently, so it's really fun to have meta discussions about it.

Also, it's totally possible to like something and take a critical eye to it. The two are not mutually exclusive.

(And, with daredevil i don't think it's so bad? like, it's a pretty straightforward show, we got 13 episodes, with the promise of getting another season next year. Try hanging out in the BBC Sherlock fandom for a bit; they're crazy from lack of stimuli).

Nonnie, I stepped my toes into DD fandom on reddit and found out the hard way that the mainstream non-fannish media fandom pool for Daredevil? Is freaking full of lawyers. There was a raging, very civil, very passive-aggressive argument over something to do with Matt Murdock and it ended up citing so much factual legalese I just backed away slowly. I should have known DD fandom would be full of lawyers. I should have known.

I'm sorry, I didn't bookmark it or anything and this was more than a month ago. I basically ran away with my tail between my legs because holy crikey INTIMIDATING. You might be able to google for DD arguments that are lawyered up, because that seems like very specific threads google might have, yknow?

So, I literally searched "lawyers arguing about daredevil" and found this interesting article: http://decaturlegal.com/matt-murdock-ethical-attorney-netflix-daredevil/

lololol omg okay I'm the ayrt and while that's not the same raging debate I bumped into, that one is really cool, too. Interestingly, in the comics the reason Matt needs to keep his secret identity is because if he's unmasked it going to shed light on every legal case he had a hand in while being DD. And he does get disbarred in NY eventually, and has to go practice law in CA (the only state where, if you have already passed the bar prior to being disbarred elsewhere, you can still legally practice law). So this article makes me chuckle, because it's really not a good idea for Matt to be an unmasked DD while also being a lawyer. Conflict of interest is an actual thing, yo.

Just FYI person above, to clarify California isn't the only state where you can practice law if you were disbarred somewhere else.

The reason Matt practices there is because it's the only other state that he had already passed the bar in and was able to practice law in and he hadn't been disbarred there yet. There was a whole arc decades ago where he lived in California, which is why he could do that.

The idea being that in any other state he would actually have to apply to be a lawyer and pass the bar there, and they wouldn't let him if they found out he'd been disbarred somewhere else.

That's what I took away from the explanation given in the comics. It'd be pretty weird if California was just like "Hey, all disbarred lawyers come on down! We want you here!"

SA... sorry. Just realized that I nitpicked on the very thread where someone was wondering about why fandom is so nitpicky. lol

Very fandom is nitpicky, some more than others.

I do suspect that DD fandom tends to get a bit more nitpicky around aspects of Matt's disability and character, only because there are so many things that are out of people's wheelhouse when it comes to writing him.

So, for example, nobody wants to be that person who writes a blind character in a way that's accidentally offensive or doesn't get it right. I think everyone here kind of feels like that's a bit of a minefield at times.

Same goes, in probably a less hyper-aware way, for the Catholicism, and even for the lawyer aspect of his personality.

I find that this fandom's actually been pretty educational to me, because everyone is really concerned with making sure that they're doing the aspects of the show that they don't have knowledge about justice and been very conscientious. It's nice. (But then I'm also not disabled. Or Catholic. Or a lawyer).
