Nicknames/Pet Names

(Anonymous) 2015-07-15 01:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Normally I hate it when people make non-canon nicknames for characters (like calling Hermione "Mione," or Foggy "Fog"), but I am strangely not bothered by Foggy calling Matt "Matty."

But like, I am weirdly hesitant to have Foggy call him that in my own fic, because he never says that in the show (does he?). He calls him "buddy" a few times, but idek... "Matty" was a thing his dad called him. (..... right? I'm not imagining that, am I? Or has a fandom norm just wormed it's way into my brain?)

No, you're not imagining it. His Dad called him Matty, and so did Stick.

Yeah, I'm not bothered much by fics having Foggy call Matt "Matty," but I don't do it in my own fic. I kind of like that it's a name that has a connection with his childhood, with his and dad and Stick.

I would actually love a fic where Foggy or somebody calls him Matty when he's older and he just kind of cringes and asks them not to. Like, imagine how he would feel if it was the first time anyone had called him that since Stick left...

The hottie mc burner phone convo...

Does Foggy's unwavering support of Matt's dating life and burner phone girlfriends slay anyone else? He's just like OH, IS SHE NICE? ARE YOU GETTING MARRIED YET? WELL BOO ON HER.

Like, Foggy, no, people get burner phones for mistresses and drug dealers not potential long term girlfriends

I can see Foggy calling Matt "Matty" out of genuine affection. I can also see him doing it ironically or in situations when he's trying to be condescending.

Same Anon:

XD I totally forgot about the restaurant!

I just rewatched episode 7 and there's this piece of dialogue.

Matt: What the hell are you doing in my city?

Stick: Your city? Hell's Kitchen hates your guts.

So I see where the confusion comes from.

Yeah. Like, it works fine in fic but when I try to imagine Foggy saying it on the actual show I just can't. XD;;

I feel the same with people calling him "Matthew," now that I think of it. The only one that sounds right doing it is Father Lantom.

In the show, Foggy only calls him buddy or pal, but I'm certain he calls him Matty in the comics on occasion (same with Fog). I have memory issues due to head trauma, so I won't discount the possibility that I'm wrong, but I feel pretty confident about it and I've been a DD fan for 30 years.

Yeah, he definitely calls him "Matty" in the comics.

"Fog" sounds right too, though I can't think of any particular issues/eras where that shows up.

I swear he calls him "Fog" in the most recent run once, but I don't have all the issues, so I can't check properly.

Foggy uses 'Matty' quite a lot in the comics but I never use it in fic really cos for some reason it feels a bit OOC to me??? I use 'Fog' a fair bit though. idk why I'm fine with one but not the other :')

I think he did too because I THINK I remember squeeing about it (I love 'fog')

Ah, okay. Some things are easier to identify as coming from the other source material than others.

(But why doesn't Foggy's nickname need a nickname tho?? haha)

I'm the op, and those aren't the types of comments I was referring to, fyi. :-) Criticism is fine (and needed. This show and these characters aren't perfect, after all). But you can generally tell when someone just hates her as a character and thinks every little thing she does or says is Bad and Wrong.

From what I've gathered from various comments around this meme, Karen is: an idiot, looking to get herself raped/killed, nosey, pushy, insensitive, obnoxious, naive, fetishizes Matt's blindness, is responsible for Ben's actions and his death, is friendzoning Foggy, etc etc etc.

Talk about double standards; I've yet to see so much vitriol aimed at any of the other characters (including the villains).

They forget/ignore the part where she's: kind, compassionate, determined, loyal, has a thirst for knowledge and justice, won't back down from a challenge, is a peacemaker, is a good friend, sticks up for herself, is trying to be brave in the face of some serious trauma, is protective, etc etc etc.

Would love some advice on a gen story I'm writing

(Anonymous) 2015-07-15 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, so... I think I need a little help with this Daredevil story that I’ve been trying to finish for the better part of a month (not actually written for a prompt, so I hope that’s okay—and btw, it’s gen). I’m just not getting anywhere with it. Would be great if I could just throw ideas back and forth with you guys. I’m currently at around 13,000 words, so it’s already pretty long and involved, but I just can’t figure out how to make the plot fall into place. Let me try to summarize what I’ve done so far.

It starts off right in the middle of a fight where Daredevil is being attacked. Matt isn’t sure by whom, but it doesn’t seem like Fisk or any organized or professional crime gang. He comes out of it with a sprained ankle (cue some Foggy-related h/c, cause, yeah, that’s just my thing).

From something that one of the attackers said to Matt during the fight, Matt suspects it might have been some kind of anti-Daredevil attack. You know, people who don’t like what he’s doing and are trying to get him.

Foggy starts investigating, and actually finds something online. There’s a Daredevil haters group that is getting organized (I ended up calling them “Retributionists”). To find out what they’re trying to do, Foggy goes to one of their meetings and Matt listens in from a rooftop nearby.

There’s a guy called Zack rallying people to stop Daredevil and his self-justice machinations. They have kind of a strike team, and now ask people to build a type of neighborhood watch system in Hell’s Kitchen so that people can alert the strike team to corner Matt when he’s out for his next prowl. (Homeless Network, anyone?)

Foggy and Matt are appalled, and try to think of ways how to stop it. They get Karen involved as well, but obviously don’t tell her that Matt is Daredevil.

Of course Matt just wants to butt in head-first and take these guys on. (You know, like you do when you’re frickin’ Daredevil.) Foggy thinks that’s a terrible idea. They fight. They make up. They still don’t really know how to go about it.

A few days later, Matt is out and about again as Daredevil, and listens in to a crime. A young woman is being assaulted, and he rescues her from the throes of three thugs. They flee before he can do serious damage, and he may just have saved the girl (about 20-ish) from impending sexual assault with a twist, because it turns out she’s also blind.

Matt gets her to safety (her father comes pick her up) without exposing himself. The girl doesn’t realize that he’s blind, and he doesn’t tell her. She does realize he’s Daredevil, though, and her reaction when she finds out is reluctant, because she’s heard stories that he’s not a good guy. Matt eventually wins her over, but there isn’t that much interaction.

The next day, Matt tells Foggy about what happened the previous night, and that he wants to ask Brett to let them know if the girl presses charges, because he wants Nelson & Murdock to represent her. She does, and the girl (Kiera) ends up in the N&M offices with her father. Who turns out to be Zack, the Retributionists guy. Thankfully, neither Kiera nor her father recognize Foggy from the meeting or Matt as Daredevil.

They have a first, initial meeting, and they think that this can work in their favor, because maybe the attack makes Zack realize that Daredevil isn’t the kind of guy who needs to be punished and exposed.

And that’s kinda where I’m stuck now, because suddenly it all feels a little predictable and trite, and I’m not all that sure what to write next and how to wrap it up. I’m also happy to share what I’ve written so far if anyone would like to read it in more detail.

So..... any thoughts? Ideas? Or is this a terrible storyline and I should just trash the whole thing and move on to something different?

I'm okay with any of the main villains calling him "Matthew".

Re: What's up with the Karen hate??

(Anonymous) 2015-07-15 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Sure, all that good stuff is true, but so us some if the bad and I don't see anything wrong with pointing that out. For example, if Karen hadn't lied to Ben to get him to the nursing home to talk to Fisk's mother, Fisk might not have killed him. His reason for killing him was that he went after his mother. He didn't. Karen did. That isn't hating on Karen, that's a fact from the show. The other stuff, well, you can take what you want from what you see. Saying Karen wants to be killed is no different from the Wesley suicide by Karen post. Saying she fetishises Matt's blindness? Well there was one prompt where Foggy kinda did the same and wanted to be blind himself. No attack to the OP of that post though...

People are more protective of Karen. I don't know why, but they are. It's a shame, because it prevents the more detailed exploration of her character we get with the others because any interesting posts are stifled.

Re: What's up with the Karen hate??

(Anonymous) 2015-07-15 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
True, like I don't know if she was fetishizing Matt's blindness, but that face touching scene with Foggy definitely gave me a "this is not cool" vibe and I think in the Foggy prompt you're referring to, the OP posed it as a mental illness which may be why no one commented like they did on the Karen one.

As another anon was saying in this thread, we definitely get more of Karen than we do Claire and Vanessa (and Madame Gao got like 5 scenes or something), so she's like the only main female character on the show, so people treat her like she's precious and must be protected at all costs to the detriment of being able to criticize her actions.

It definitely sounds interesting and I think the anti-Daredevil group should find out about Matt being Daredevil after they get to know him for that layer of "this is the guy we hate, but we also kinda like him, what do we do?"

Re: PSA: Wound care - Also can do some medical Q&A

(Anonymous) 2015-07-15 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know if you'd know this but, if someone was brought into the ER by ambulance and they needed abdomal surgery, would the doctors do it right away? I'm just thinking about how you're supposed to not eat for a certain amount of time before a surgery, and whether they'd waive that in an emergency situation.

(Also, would that be something they'd just do automatically or would they need a medical proxy to ok the surgery first?)

Re: What's up with the Karen hate??

They're more protective of her because she does get a lot of misogynist hate in this fandom (not so much on meme that I've seen, thankfully). I't not necessarily the right response, but it's a response I can understand.

Karen hate stifles discussion of her a lot more than people getting defensive about her.

Re: What's up with the Karen hate??

(Anonymous) 2015-07-16 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
The thing was, the prompt about Foggy wanting to be blind didn't attract any negative comments about Foggy. The one about Karen fetishizing Matt's blindness attracted a few about how Karen is an awful creeper.

Karen just plain gets more hate than Foggy. Almost everyone in the fandom loves Foggy (including me), so I can understand why people are more protective of a controversial character like Karen than they are of Foggy.
