We also say "going to the movies" sometimes, instead of "going to the movie theater."

Re: Multi POV fics

(Anonymous) 2015-07-14 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it depends on the length of the chapter, and also the style of writing. Imo multiple POVs can be confusing unless you either spend a decent amount of time with each POV, or clearly mark where the POV changes (by either putting the names or just line breaks??) But then again, a story can be super amazing if there are lots of intertwining POVs, even if you only spend a very short amount of time with each one. I wouldn't write something where the POV changes from sentence to sentence or anything like that, without the changes being marked out, because I think it's just off-putting (unless you're doing something stylistic with it/it's specifically linked to the plot - like idk the POV characters have a psychic link or whatever).

Also about what the anon above said - I agree that first person POV can be a bit more confusing, unless you actually tell us whose turn it is each time OR give them each a different medium?? Like letter writing/blog/standard narrative/blah.

um sorry idk if this is helpful XD these are just my thoughts about POVs :')

yeah a lot of people have been calling her stupid or talking about how she "walks all over other people's feelings" which is just....no, lol. try harder.

you can call them cinemas if you're being snooty, particularly small art-house type theaters that would never stoop to screening a blockbuster. we do know what the word means; we just don't use it much. ;)

People don't usually come right out and make hate posts about her (though there have been a couple of prompts that have lead to wank). It's usually just snide comments interspersed here and there.

Re: Multi POV fics

(Anonymous) 2015-07-14 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, that makes sense.

I was worried because I had originally planning on writing from just one character's POV, but then I realized there are things that I want the readers to actually "see" that don't involve that character.

Which chatroom will we be using? I just went to the thread about it and there seems to be a couple of different options?

Is the RE/ER spelling important, or is that just a pretentious theatre thing?

Theater is the American spelling. Theatre is British.

If you're still taking questions, I hope this is relevant?

Say Matt has been removing stitches and putting his fingers in wounds to keep them open.
He tells Claire that they reopened during a fight.
Could she tell it's a lie just from seeing the wound? Or would it be the repeated injuries/how long it lasts/ the eventual massive infection/ his own sketchy lying face that makes her suspicious?

I hope my English makes sense?

Re: Relying on people's knowledge of canon...

I'm writing a fic right now that intertwines stuff unseen with stuff that happens in the show, and it fully assumes that the reader has seen the show, knows the context and can fill in the blanks.

I sumnarize a bit, but not much. And nobody seems to care.

(DA) Those are all different options for connecting to the same chatroom. There is only one place but they've given us different options; so the more chatroom savvy can get in how they like and those of us who aren't so savvy can get in easily enough and not be excluded. =)

(AYRT)I have no idea how American cities/towns work so I assumed that Hell's Kitchen was like, an actual council/election/something legal area within New York that like, had some powers and was a distinct something within the city.

That is, once I found out Hell's Kitchen was actually real. I thought it was just a name for a restaurant at first!

(Anonymous) 2015-07-15 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
She's small and guarded, but she gets the same time amount as big open personalities like Foggy and they overshadow her. I really connected as it went on, but she took a while and the scene people remember the most isn't her best.
Plus being confirmed as the love interest with less chemistry (I hate writers having to strain for romance)

I thought she was the character meant to represent the audience. She feels unsafe because of people who will never face consequences for hurting her? That hit home
Karen wanted justice and didn't back down and she's nowhere near perfect, but I really felt with her.
Tl;dr: Karen feels very real to me. Her first impression makes me cringe but I like her.
Sorry for anyone who read this whole mess. Hope my feels for Karen come through the language barrier. She has pretty hair. The end.

Re: Multi POV fics

DA

The 3rd person perspective can be sub-divided into "3rd person limited" and "3rd person omniscient". The former is basically 1st person with the pronouns changed. The audience knows only what the POV character knows and that includes their internal environment and thought processes. As the name suggests, 3rd person omniscient is where everything is known (including all characters' internal environments) to the story-teller.

If you're used to writing from a limited perspective, weaving in broader information can be a challenge, but your audience should pick it up fairly quickly, especially if you establish omniscience early. If you're worried about the smoothness of your transitions, try reading you work out loud. I find that's one of the best test for flow.

uh, afaik from what i've been taught in drama classes, "theatre" is what you DO, and "theater" is where you DO IT.

for example: i love to do musical theatre in my local theater.

Re: Multi POV fics

(Anonymous) 2015-07-15 09:15 am (UTC)(link)
I know most people would say to keep the chapter to one POV only, but I've switched POVs in chapters before, and the only confusion I've gotten over it was when I did it for a 616/MCU story--which could be easily solved, I suppose, by switching from one character to anyone who isn't, like, their alternate version or something. otherwise, switching POVs in the middle of a chapter is fine, so long as you indicate it somehow, maybe with a line break or something, and you're consistent throughout the section with your POV. don't switch POVs every line, for example.

Re: What's up with the Karen hate??

(Anonymous) 2015-07-15 09:24 am (UTC)(link)
I think people seem to be very protective of Karen in a way they aren't for the other characters. Maybe it's because she is the only female character who really counts as a 'main' character so far, I don't know. But it seems sometimes like one little comment about her can be seized hold of and picked to bits in a way that draws masses of attention.

I've had this happen to me. I say something perfectly innocent an the crowds sweep in and start causing me of hate and misogyny and whatever else and I'm like "wft is going on?" It's very weird, because you can say what you like about literally any other character, but one even slightly negative thing about Karen and you're in trouble. Double standards don't make for a great atmosphere. It's a shame.

(OP) If he cut the sutures rather than tore them out, she should be able to tell that. As for putting his fingers in his wounds... if he did additional damage, she may be able to tell that it isn't something that would just be caused by moving wrong/over-exertion/etc., but I doubt she could specifically tell that it was self-inflicted as opposed to the result of a lucky hit.

Otherwise, it'd be his horrible lying skills. :)

^Me again.

I'm 800 miles from New York City, which is 200 miles longer than the entire length of the island of Great Britain, so what my folks say may not be relevant.
