Relying on people's knowledge of canon...

Do you think it's okay to just assume people know what happens in canon? Like talking about foggy being mad with Matt without explicitly saying that he recently found out matt is daredevil? Or mentioning that Fisk is in prison without saying who fisk is/going into any detail?

If you're talking about show canon, I think so. I don't know about others, but I usually don't read fanfiction until I've caught up with whatever happens. If I don't get caught up, it means I don't really care about the show itself that much but still want to read the fanfiction.

I'm writing a fic right now that intertwines stuff unseen with stuff that happens in the show, and it fully assumes that the reader has seen the show, knows the context and can fill in the blanks.

I sumnarize a bit, but not much. And nobody seems to care.

It might be nice to put a note in at the beginning, saying where the fic is in canon. Not all of us have the resources to watch DD in one fell swoop, and we might want to read some fanfiction before we get to episode 13.

But that's just a personal thing. I tried to stay away from things that would spoil me too badly, but I wasn't all that surprised when Fisk ended up in jail anyhow. (Just like nobody was surprised when, after all his angsting, Matt failed to kill Fisk and there were multiple episodes left of the show.)
