College Matt seeks father figure

(Anonymous) 2017-10-01 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
One of Matt's professors notices how desperate Matt is for positive older male attention. He takes advantage. Matt is conflicted because he loves the fatherly attention, but hates what he needs to do and put up with to get it.

Eventually he ends up telling Foggy's dad what's happening and the man goes on the warpath, making sure the professor is punished, and taking care of Matt, and in doing so reminds Matt what fathers are supposed to be like.

Fill: Daddy Issues 1/?

(Anonymous) 2017-10-01 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
So yeah, I just started this up. First chapter isn't anything much, but I thought it was a good start to the whole thing. Things might seem all happy dandy but...you know. Not sure how long this will be. Probably.....6ish chapters? The next one should be longer. -MM

****

Matt had some daddy issues, it was simple as that.

Matt’s dad meant everything to him and his death threw him into a spiral where he didn’t know what he needed anymore. His father was gone forever, and no one could replace him. Being in an orphanage full of nuns gave him some mother figures to rely on, he found comfort in some of the kinder sisters who would take care of him on his bad days…Where he could hear and feel everything, where the pain was just too much to handle.

Then Stick came, and he found what he thought could be something close to a father. Someone who believed in tough love, believed in him and didn’t nurture and coddle him like the sisters did. If that meant training, and getting hit and yelled at for the simple satisfaction of having someone who believed in him…Well, he would take it. But then he went to far, got to attached and Stick punished him by leaving.

From then on he didn’t entirely trust in anybody, he couldn’t be sure that anybody he got close to wouldn’t leave him.

Foggy managed to wiggle his way in somehow, he definitely wasn’t a father, but he was a best friend. The first semester was amazing, Foggy would constantly invite Matt to family gathering whenever he had the time. They would study together, eat together, he felt like a brother to Matt. Even Foggy’s family felt like his family, since the first time he met them at the beginning of the semester it was like they just decided he was an old friend of the family.

“Buddy, I can’t study anymore or my eyes will roll out of their sockets,” Foggy took a deep sigh and closed the book in front of him. They’d been in the library for what felt like an entire day, but it was only about three hours. “I really hate torts, Matt.”

“We can get something to eat,” Matt shrugged. “Though I admit that I’m not all that fond of torts class, either.”

“It’s bullshit, Matt. Why would the professor assign a major paper within the first week of class. It’s worth 25 percent of our grade! It’s ridiculous,” Foggy groaned. “I’m gonna fail.”

“I was going to talk to the professor during his office hours, get some ideas about what he wants for the paper.”

“You go ahead and do that Matt, the guy creeps me out,” Foggy frowned. “But we should eat first.”

“Why does he creep you out?” Matt tilted his head. He didn’t think the guy was creepy, if anything he seemed like he cared a lot about his students.

“I don’t know man whenever I talk to him he gets all up in my personal space. I’m not a fan.”

Matt supposed that was true, but so far he’d just read it as interest. Matt smiled to himself, “Alright, let’s go get some burritos.”

Foggy stood up abruptly and his chair clanged against the table, “Burritos de Abuelito?! You have the best ideas, Matt.”

Matt chuckled.

_

Later that day he’d met the professor at office hours. Professor Samuel Burke, he’d gotten tenure at the school more than twenty years ago. Matt assumed the man was about fifty years old…Maybe older, but he couldn’t be entirely sure.

Matt had a habit of going to his professor’s office hours more than was perfectly normal. He never did it with the woman professors, but always tried to strike up a conversation with his older peers and teachers. It was a part of him that hoped he’d find another mentor, another person who would bring Matt under his wing and show him how things are done. Matt wasn’t entirely aware of his actions, but the thoughts still lingered under the surface.

“Hello,” Matt lightly knocked against the door and let himself hear a single heartbeat inside the office. He could tell Professor Burke was in, it wasn’t the assistant, she had a perfume and Mr. Burke had a distinctive smell of cider. “Mr. Burke are you in?”

“Yes, son. I’m straight ahead, about a two yards- watch for the chair in front of my desk, feel free to sit down there, I’m just grading papers.”

Matt took Burke’s advice and tapped his cane over to the desk. He sat down, “Mr. Burke, I was just wondering what exactly you were looking for in terms of our first torts paper. Me and Foggy have been having a hard time finding a focus.”

Matt heard Burke shuffle his papers to the side of his desk, and then grab his chair and drag it over to Matt’s side. Burke sat down beside him, and then wrapped an arm around Matt, “I remember you, Murdock. First day of class you asked me what you needed to do to be successful, I was appreciative of your drive.”

Matt smiled, “Thank you.” The physical closeness didn’t really bother him like Foggy had said, instead it made him feel secure.

Burke gripped Matt’s shoulder in a supportive gesture and then spoke again, “When it comes to the paper, I just want a start about your thoughts on the law itself, maybe find a focus on a particular case and then extrapolate a thesis- it doesn’t have to be anything too complicated, just something you noticed.”

“I…I think I understand,” Matt frowned. It was still too broad, “I’ll try and do that.”

Burke nodded and then unwrapped his arm, he stood up and faced Matt, who was still sitting down. He gripped both of Matt’s shoulders, “I can still tell you’re uncertain, how about before class tomorrow, we go get some coffee. I’ll give you some tips about the paper, and some ideas about what to do in law school. This is your second semester isn’t it?”

“Yes, Mr. Burke.”

“Oh, feel free to call me Sam. Mr. Burke makes me feel old. You’ll definitely need some advice from an old soul to really succeed in law school. How about you meet me in my office a half hour before class and I’ll bring you to that new coffee shop on the third flour.”

A warmth came over Matt and he nodded and stood up, “I would really appreciate that. Thanks for the help, Mr. Burke.”

“Sam.”

Matt nodded again, “Sam, then.”

Warning, bad stuff happens. I'd rate it mature but because there's nothing overtly graphic, but there's uncomfortable content. -MM

“I’ll have a large vanilla latte,” Sam said to the barista. He turned to face Matt. “What do you want, son?”

“Oh, well I can pay for my own drink.”

“Nonsense,” Sam waved a hand. “I insist.”

Matt smiled just a bit and conceded, “Alright, I’ll just have a small black coffee with room.” Cheapest thing on the menu, he could add some milk and a little sugar himself to cut off the bitter flavor, he didn’t want to go any farther.

“Sure you don’t want anything special? You might not be able to see it, but they have this thing called a honey nut latte, with just a touch of honey and organic almond milk. I’ve have it before, light and smooth, it’s delicious.”

“I-” Matt shook his head. It sounded good…but he wouldn’t push, “No I’ll just have the small plain coffee.”

Sam turned back to the barista, “And one small honey nut latte please,” He handed over a bill and they both walked away and waited to pick up their drinks.

“You didn’t have to do that, Mr. Bur- Sam.”

“I didn’t have too,” Sam admitted. “I just wanted to give you something sweet.”

Matt felt a wave of warmth, and when they both got their coffee he was satisfied.

Meetings like those didn’t become entirely uncommon after that, almost like clockwork Matt would meet Sam for coffee, they’d talk about the law and Sam would get him a honey nut latte.

Things were looking up, he felt like he found a mentor. He got a hundred percent on his first paper.
_

It was at around the next week when they did their typical routine, but this time Sam insisted on going back to his office. Sam lead him in and closed the door behind them.

“I made some notes on what I’d be looked for in the next paper, this one is worth 30% of your grade, I also have some cases written down that I’d specifically like to see.”

There was always that physical closeness whenever they spoke, in some way they’d always touch each other.

Matt ran his hand over his watch, “Class is going to start in twenty minutes…I should probably get going, if it’s okay, can I take the notes you’ve written down? Foggy can read them out for me, I’m sure they’re helpful.”

“Well,” Sam hummed to himself. “I keep giving you help, and you know I like to give you things, but I feel like,” He scooted his chair over, closer to Matt. Their knees were touching. “Like maybe I need something back.”

“Something back?” Matt noticed Sam’s heart had gotten considerably faster. His perspiration up. It had happened before, Sam got excited over something.

Sam leaned forward and put both hands on Matt’s thighs, he lightly massaged them, “I’ll do you first, then you can do me.”

Matt’s throat closed up. He couldn’t speak.

Sam slid hid hand up Matt’s thigh and then gripped his groin. Matt couldn’t help but let out a moan, it wasn’t like he enjoyed it. He didn’t like it, the sound was involuntary. Sam chuckled, “So you do like it.”

“I d-” I don’t think I want this. Matt tried to say, but it wouldn’t come out properly. Sam was fumbling with his belt buckle, he undid the strap and then zipped open his pants. He massaged Matt through his underwear. Matt was tight and frozen, he wasn’t saying anything but his body betrayed him and he got hard.

Matt tuned out after that.

He didn’t pay attention went Sam took him out and got him off. He didn’t pay attention when Sam said, “Well that took more time then I thought, maybe you can repay me in my office hours next time, I’ll buy you some more coffee.”

He didn’t pay attention when Sam handed him a towel and the notes, told him to clean up and said that he wouldn’t mark him absent if he was late to class.

He didn’t pay attention. It didn’t happen. None of it happened. Sam gave him some great advice, he bought him coffee, nothing else happened.
_

“What happened?” Foggy asked him as they were walking from class.

“What do you mean?”

“You were fifteen minutes late to class, you haven’t said a word to me the entire time, and your hands are shaking,” Foggy frowned. “What the hell happened?”

“Nothing, Foggy. Don’t worry about it.”

Nothing happened, he told himself.

Nothing happened he thought as he walked back to office hours that day.

Sam got him coffee again, this time he taught Matt how to write a proper legal thesis. He taught Matt how to pay attention properly in class, and he taught him how to use listening skills…Because he knew Matt can’t see what is written on the board.

If Sam insisted on Matt repaying him, Matt didn’t argue. He just, did it. Like it was a perfectly normal way to do things.

The visits to Sam continued, Sam even said he’d teach Matt how to swing a baseball bat. But after overtime they’d meet and Matt would have to repay him.

“There’s no more of me getting you off, son. Sorry about that, I just thought you could give me something nice every time,” Sam licked his lips. “You know what they say, the more you give the more you get.”

He’d teach him so much, just if…Just if Matt gives him something sweet.

He knew it was wrong, somewhere deep inside he knew this wasn’t right. But he was dying for the attention, and for all the times Matt wasn’t getting him off or giving him a hand job, or blowjob, or…the ending time, when they had just enough time at the end of the day when Sam bent him over a desk.

Well… when those things weren’t happening, they were good times. They made up for everything, he told himself.

He was an adult, he was 21, he could make his own decisions. They were both consenting, he told himself. I didn’t say no when it first happened, he told himself.

He told himself a lot of things.

_

“Matt, buddy,” Foggy shook Matt out of his stupor. “I haven’t seen you eat anything other than energy bars for the past three weeks. That’s massively unhealthy.”

“I just haven't been all that hungry lately,” It was then that Matt’s stomach betrayed him and growled.

Foggy groaned, “Okay so I know this isn’t a proper meal, but I thought you’d like this.” Foggy handed something over to Matt.

Matt took it in his hands, it was warm, it was coffee. Matt didn’t pay much attention when he took a sip, and then frowned violently when he realized.

He felt a churning in his stomach, he dropped the coffee and ran to the bathroom. He wretched and gasped.

“Holy shit,” Foggy ran over to Matt and put his hand on his back. “Are you okay? Damn is it that bad? I’m sorry, I thought you’d like it. It’s from that coffee place that’s been up for a month…I’m sorry, shit I should have asked you before getting it.”

“It’s…it’s okay, Foggy,” Matt took a few steadying breaths. “It’s not your fault, it’s just, I had it before, and I didn’t-”

“Matt what’s been going on with you, buddy?”

“Nothing, Fog.”

“You keep saying that word,” Foggy dropped down next to Matt. “I do not think it means what you think it means.”

“Inconceivable...You don't need to worry about me, Foggy."

“Well, I do Matt. You’re my best friend, and I will worry about you,” Foggy said. “Look, my parents are making their famous pot pie this weekend, so I thought it might be a good idea if you come along.”

“Foggy…”

“Now don’t refuse me, Matt. I know something has been going on with you, and you haven’t been doing well lately so I thought spending the day with the family would cheer you up. They love you.”

Matt stood up, flushed the toilet and rinsed his mouth in the sink, “Alright, Foggy.”

Maybe a weekend with Foggy’s family would help him clear his head, get over this damn feeling in his chest that’s been eating away at him.

Sam was right, if someone gives you something you repay them.

Tit for tat. A trade-off. Quid pro quo. You scratch my back and I scratch yours.
(Get a father, give an orgasm.)

This was how the world worked, so why did it sit so wrong with him?

Going to the Nelson Family Abode for the weekend was always a therapeutic experience. Anna Nelson couldn’t cook, but always ordered the best baked goods from around the neighborhood and would constantly force them on Matt. Edward Nelson could cook, and seemed to always have some sort of cured meat on hand (which Foggy accounts to his mother’s deep love of ham) Edward was the one who was making the pot pies right now.

As Edward chopped carrots he spoke to Foggy and Matt who sat across the counter, “You two should help me chop onions and garlic. I’ll need a whole head of garlic and a two onions.”

“Don’t you think that’s a little too much dad?” Foggy asked. “I mean we all know Matt has a sensitive pallet.”

“Pish posh, garlic and onions are the only things keeping this family afloat. Onion is needed for pot pies, and garlic adds that extra Nelson spirit,” Edward shook his head and leveled a serious look at Foggy. “I thought I raised you better, Franklin.”

“Yeah, yeah,” Foggy waved his hand. “Now he’s bringing out the formal names, you see this Matt?”

“You know I don’t,” Matt smirked. He was still down, and hadn’t been talking much (though he wasn’t much the talker anyway at gatherings like this.) He found himself zoning out, and listening in on a conversation between Anna and Foggy’s sister Candace. They were debating over whether Ronald Reagan was a good president. Candace was insistent that Reagan was not, Anna was insistent that he was. Noticing he hadn’t spoke in a while, he drew his attention back to the convo at hand. “And isn’t it a little irresponsible to let me use a knife?”

Edward hummed thoughtfully, “You make an interesting point counselor.”

“I could help peel potatoes, I swear I won’t slice my finger off,” Matt knew he could most likely slice up the onions, garlic, and potatoes faster than it would take for the water to boil…But there was no reason for him to let that on.

“On your honor?”

“On my honor.”

At that moment the heated discussion between Candace and Anna became a heated argument, “MOM! THE AIDS EPIDEMIC, MOM! God, I can’t believe what I’m hearing.” “Candy! Don’t scream at me!”

“I guess I’ll go pull those two apart,” Matt could hear Foggy roll his eyes. “Really though, they need to stop talking about U.S. Presidents it’s getting old."

Edward laughed while Foggy walked away. He took something heavy and dropped it on the counter, then slid something to Matt, “Go ahead and peel seven of these, I don’t mind if the peels are on the floor, we’ll be cleaning up later anyway. Peeler is to your right, bag of potatoes is directly to your left.”

Matt nodded and rolled up his sleeves. He didn’t notice when Edward paused in cooking, and took a potato and started peeling.

The silence got uncomfortable.

“Matt…” Edward cleared his throat. “Who did that to you?”

Matt frowned and tilted his head, “Did what?”

“You’ve got some pretty bad bruises around your wrists, kid.”

Matt could nearly kick himself. He had completely forgotten about those, Sam had gotten…overly enthusiastic, gripped his wrists a bit too hard. Matt couldn’t tell how deep they were, or how bad they looked, but judging on Edward’s concerned tone and higher heart rate it couldn’t be good.

“Just something stupid,” Matt tried to explain away.

“Lately…well, Foggy told me you haven’t been acting the same recently,” Edward rinsed his hands off in the sink. “So what’s been going on? Because I’m no idiot, and those bruises are in the shape of hands,” He leaned forward on the counter toward Matt.

“I-” Matt wanted to tell him. But suddenly a deep sense of shame came over him, how could he possible explain this? To Foggy’s DAD no less? “That’s not important.”

“Not important?” Edward’s tone was soft, concerned. Unlike Foggy who was very insistent, and got very frustrated every time Matt refused to talk. “Son,” The word made Matt flinch and so Edward spoke again. “Matt, it is definitely important. It’s important to me, because if someone is hurting you, I’d like it to stop.”

“Why do you care?” Matt suddenly asked. “It’s not as if you’ve known me for very long, I’m only friends with your son. What’s the point?”

Edward sighed, “I care because you’re like a son to me. It doesn’t matter how long I’ve known you, you’ve made a heavy impact on our lives. You’re caring, understanding, well-spoken, intelligent and seek justice like no one I’ve ever seen before. Do you get it now?”

Matt nodded, despite himself.

“So why don’t you tell me what happened?” Edward said softly.

“There’s a, a professor,” Matt said. “He’s been helping me out a lot, he said, I was like a son to him too,” Edward’s heart-rate skyrocketed but he said nothing. “Everything was fine for a while, he would give me life advice but then he…he started asking for something back.”

Edward didn’t speak, he waited until Matt regained his composure.

“He wanted…” Matt grimaced. “Sexual favors in return.”

It was then that Edward spoke again, “Did he do this without your consent?”

“I didn’t say no,” Matt explained. “Not the first time.”

“You should know,” Edward took some slow breaths. “That not saying no isn’t a yes. That’s not…that’s not what good people do. In fact, that’s what very, very sick and disgusting people do.”

“He’s helping me.”

“You might think he is, God dammit you’re just a KID!” The sounds from the other room grew quiet, and so Edward calmed down. “I’m sorry…I’m not angry at you, not at all. I’m just, I am very angry at the man who did this to you. What’s his name?”

“I don’t want to press charges,” Matt insisted.

“You might not want to, but there’s no telling how many other people he’s done this to. Can I touch your hand?” Matt paused for a moment but nodded. Edward gripped it softly, “That’s not what professors do. That’s not how they should act, much less one who tried to be a father-figure. What would you say if an actual father was doing this to his son?”

“I would,” Matt’s voice got softer. “I would tell him that it was wrong, illegal. That the father deserved to be put away.”

“This man isn’t a father. This man is a predator. You need to tell me his name.”

“Samuel Burke.”

Op here. This chapter was wonderful. I love the family atmosphere you created in the Nelson house and how Foggy's dad is clearly furious at the guy but trying to stay calm in front of Matt.

Having Mr. Nelson be the one to find out is an unexpected twist! And I'm so glad that he's able to tell Matt what a father figure should be like.

Fill: Daddy Issues 4/?

(Anonymous) 2017-10-10 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Foggy didn’t question when his dad insisted on coming back to campus with them, but Matt could tell he was nervous and uncertain. So far, on the subway ride back to campus Foggy was shuffling, tapping his fingers, and flicking his head back and forth. Every time he turned his head, Matt could hear his hair brush across his shoulders. Matt understood Foggy’s anxiousness (after all, imagine if your father insisted on going to your place of study with no explanation) but Matt couldn’t help but feel irritated.

“Foggy, please, would you stop fiddling,” Matt brought his hand up to his temple. He was already developing a headache, he hated the subway. The smell of greasy pizza, homeless people, and the various noises (like the man ranting about extraterrestrials three cars over) didn’t make for the best environment with his super senses.

“How did you know I was fiddling?”

“I can hear your pants shuffling, your tapping against the subway rail isn’t helping either,” The moment Matt said it Foggy stopped drumming his fingers.

Foggy and Matt were standing right next to each other on the busy train car, Edward managed to finagle a seat somewhere a few feet away from them (he said something about his back.)

“Matt…I’ve been respecting the whole thing that went on between you and my dad back at the family apartment, but the fact I don’t know what the hell is going on really doesn’t bode well for my nerves,” Foggy leaned in toward Matt. “This might be overstepping, but…can we play the yes or no, game?”

The yes or no game was something Foggy made up to get Matt to admit things a while back. The concept was like this: Foggy asks questions, and Matt answers yes or no. Apparently, Foggy had come up with the idea after he’d come to the realization that Matt really didn’t like discussing his problems…so the yes or no game was a perfect solution. Foggy would get to know what was going on, Matt only had to say two different words.

Matt gave a slight nod, and he could hear Foggy’s broad smile.

“Okay,” Foggy lowered is his voice. “So…does this have to do with school?”

Matt furrowed his brow, well, sort of, “In a way.”

Foggy made a series of high and low notes that indicated he was upset with the answer but would not directly comment on it. Matt wasn’t entirely sure whether this series of notes was actually loud enough for anybody but his super-ears to hear.

“Relationship problems?”

“Sort of.”

Foggy made the series of notes again, “A girl?”

“No.”

There was a pause, “A boy?”

“Yes.”

“Do I know him?”

“Yes…” Matt closed his eyes. It didn’t do anything for him, not really, but gave him a sense of security.

Foggy noticed and gripped Matt’s arm, “Did he hurt you?”

“Yes,” Matt heard Foggy’s heart get higher.

“Was this a one time thing?”

“No.”

“Has this been going on for a few days?”

“More,” Matt said. Foggy didn’t comment on the deviation from the rules.

“Weeks?”

“Yes.”

“How did he hurt you, Matt?” Foggy’s voice cracked.

“That’s not a yes or no question, Foggy.”

“Was it physical?”

“Yes.”

“Emotional?”

“Yes.”

“Is it more than that?”

“Yes.”

“Was it sexual?”

Matt just nodded this time. He didn’t want to talk anymore.

“Did somebody…did somebody rape you?”

“M-Maybe. I don’t know. I’m not- I don’t know.”

“I know him…” Foggy gripped Matt’s arm harder. Matt startled and Foggy said sorry and let go. “I know him, I didn’t, how did I not notice this? I fucking know him,” Foggy mumbled to himself. “Is he a classmate?”

“No.”

“A…a professor?” Matt could still hear Foggy’s heart rate steadily rising.

“Yes…”

“Professor Burke.”

“Yes, Foggy,” Matt’s eyes began to water but he quickly rubbed at them. They were at the subway for god’s sake he couldn’t break down now. He wasn’t weak. Stick taught him to be strong. He wasn’t weak, he couldn’t be weak.

“Fuck, I said the guy was a creep I should have kept you away from him, I should have fucking known,” Foggy rubbed at his temples and took three breaths. “Fuck, are we reporting him? Is that what’s happening? How did my dad manage to get it out of you? God, I’m sorry, Matt.”

“You don’t need to be sorry, none of this is your fault.” Matt cleared his throat in an effort to sound less emotional. “I’ll file a report with your dad, he’ll help me…he saw some things, I had to explain. Bruises.”

“I’m gonna fucking kill Burke if I see him. I’m going to rip his throat out if I see him.”

“Your dad will help me. You don’t have to be a part of this.”
“What if I want to be a part of it?”

Matt shook his head. He didn’t want Foggy getting involved, that would only make things harder. “You can deal with the fallout, you’re my roommate and best friend, but…well, I don’t want you getting involved with the semantics of the situation it’s complicated enough I don’t want to add assault charges against you on the plate.”

“Okay, okay, I’ll be there for you, Matt. Forever.”

_

After they got to campus Matt felt like he was in a bubble.

Things happened around him, he spoke to various people. Went to the Dean’s office, went to a station, went to the clinic even and had his blood drawn. There were cold hands, and concerned voices, angry voices as well. He answered all the questions honestly.

They were in the clinic now.

“We’ll be testing for various sexually transmitted diseases Mr. Murdock,” A young women was speaking to him. No one else was in the room. Did he send Foggy and Edward out? Is Foggy back at the dorm? He couldn’t remember. “I was told you have bruises? Is it alright if I see those?”

Matt nodded and held out his arms, “Edward Nelson told me I have bruises on my wrist. I’m not sure where else.”

“Not sure?”

“I’m blind, I can guess where some bruises are based on feeling but I can’t be certain whether they’re visible,” Matt explained and gestured to his glasses.

The young women hummed and her heart rate spiked, she’s embarrassed, Matt guessed she wasn’t aware of that, “Ok, well if you’ll take your shirt off I can check for any injuries that might be of concern.”

Matt didn’t argue, and then zoned out again. His movements were robotic. He answered more questions, listened to more sympathizing voices. Somebody recommended therapy and he declined.

Edward was back.

“How are you feeling, Matt?”

“Like…like I’m not real,” Matt admitted.

“Care to explain that?”

“I feel like I’m just going through motions I don’t even remember, I don’t remember most of the day I’ve just been on some sort of autopilot.”

Matt had various dissociative traits when he got stressed. He’d noticed it before, a few times training with Stick when he’d let the devil out. Other times when he simply didn’t care for the world around him.

“Well I spoke with your Dean, and he’s immediately taken Burke out of the system for now, as a safety measure. You spoke to him too, you don’t remember that?”

Matt’s mind went back to it, yes, he remembered, “I have to come back tomorrow for an official hearing.” They were going to review Burke’s status as a professor at the school. It was closed, a mediation.

Nobody else would know about it, Burke would be quietly filed away.

“I don’t think you should go through arbitration, Matt. I think it’s important people know who Burke is, and what he’s done…You should go through a traditional court hearing.”

“My condition is that Burke can’t teach, not ever again, I want that on his record- but I don’t want to go through a court hearing, Mr. Nelson. I can’t do that.”

“So you’ll just wave your right to a trial? Just like that? Let the school keep it under wraps?” Matt could tell Edward was appealing to Matt’s inherit need for justice.

But he still wanted to go through arbitration. It was faster that way, they’d settle the dispute, he was certain that the Deans at Columbia would make sure Sam never taught again. He was certain of it, and that’s all he wanted. He didn’t need to see Sam dragged through the mud, he didn’t need Columbia to fall with it. He just needed peace.

“What each of us must come to realize is that our intent always comes through. We cannot sugarcoat the feelings in our heart of hearts. The emotion is the energy that motivates. We cannot ignore what we really want to create. We should be honest and do it the way we feel it. What we owe to ourselves and everyone around is to examine the reasons of our true intent,”
Matt said. “What is the quality of my intent? My intent will be evident in the results. Burke will never get a job again, he’ll be alone, and shamed, I’ll be free of him. I don’t need any more than that, I don’t need any more.”

Edward was stunned silent, “Did you just quote someone?”

“Thurgood Marshall,” Matt smiled to himself.

Things would be okay.
