ETA: we now have a discussion post! for anything you want to talk about.
ETA2: we have a
delicious account! it's only got the first ten pages of prompts at the moment, but mod is very slowly adding the rest. mod would greatly appreciate it if you put keywords in the subject of your prompts, because figuring out one-word summaries is hard. Before Wilson beats Matt half to death and before they see his soulmark, Wilson spends a day thinking. He meant to banish the dream of a woman laughing, laughing at that asshole Mike, but the memory returns throughout the day. It comes to him at odd times. He can't forget it. It interrupts. It's intrusive.

He asks Wesley to have the men keep an eye out for a boxer named Mike, and when Wesley stares at him without blinking - always a bad sign - he sighs. "The man in the mask," he says. He doesn't have words for this. He rubs his neck; it's hot, in the summer, and it smells like exhaust. "I believe - I believe it may be an associate of his."

"A boxer," Wesley says. If it was anyone else, even the slightest hint of confusion might have made Wilson angry, but it's Wesley. Wesley only wants the information that Wilson has, which makes it that much worse that Wilson can't give him any.

"Call it a hunch." He manages not to shrug.

"...of course," Wesley says. "How aggressively should we look?"

"Quietly," Wilson says. "But quickly; I think if we find him, the masked man might not be far away."

_______________

"Who told you," Matt says. He'd swear his throat's bleeding but there's no taste of blood; it just feels closed up. Swollen. He's on a roof - he had to get up, up off the street and into the cleaner wind. He needs to be careful. The important thing to remember, for this conversation, is that he is Matt Murdock and the man in the black mask, but Mike? Mike is a friend of Claire's. He'd been in plain clothes, tonight, at the gym, and he'd heard strangers asking. A boxer, they'd said, maybe he fights sometimes? Mike?

Danny who owned the place, he'd laughed: what, he owe you money? Nah, I don't know no Mike.

Claire's the only one who knows a Mike. He'd run to the place she was staying, masked, woken her up. She'd been sleepy and angry, but she'd promised him that she didn't talk to people about her friend Mike. "Who told you to look for Mike?"

"Good," Fisk says. "That was something of a calculated risk." People's voice change when they're pleased, and Fisk sounds pleased right now. "I wasn't sure that I was right until now."

"Call off your dogs, Fisk," Matt says. He won't tell Foggy or Karen, but sometimes - lately - it feels like Fisk brings out the devil in him. It was never so hard to focus until he'd discovered Fisk, the spider conspiring to bring down the city. "This is between you and me; no civilians have anything to do with this."

"You know him," Fisk says, "or his woman? Good. You're protective of them? Loyal? Even better; still a shame that you didn't have the sense to take the job I offered. When I find him - and I will - we'll talk, I think."

The wind is cold and damp and smells like McDonald's grease, like burning coolant, and (as always, in the city) like piss. He is beginning to think that he can only drag this out for so long.

"We're talking now," he says. "You want the best for this city? Why kill an innocent man to get to me?"

"It's not ideal," Fisk agrees. "I'd much prefer alternate routes."

Up here, on the roof. Matt will never have to stand on this roof again. And - and they're talking about Mike, who is not Matt Murdock, and is not the masked man, and - and - and here, maybe, Matt can acknowledge that the heat that Fisk lights in his veins is not entirely. It's unwelcome, but it's not - it's a heat he's never felt before.

"Such as," Matt says. Fisk is breathing slowly; Matt's just fallen into rhythm with him.

He listens to Fisk breathing, on the phone, in this quiet space. In. Out. In. Out.

"One last chance," Fisk says. "You love your city. I love her, too; don't make me tear it apart."

"You don't tear cities apart, Fisk, you tear people apart."

Re: Matt/Fisk Soulmate AU (bitty little author anon #1 update)

(Anonymous) 2015-05-03 09:18 am (UTC)(link)
"You kill people," he says, and somewhere in the back of his mind the little voice of common sense, rational, practical, common sense, that's saying: matt? matt? you didn't say no, matt. i think you forgot something, i think you forgot to say no, better get that out there, matt - but his mouth is leaping ahead of his brain, now. "I don't think you could," he says. "I don't - think you would. Tear me apart, if you can, Fisk; keep it between us."

Matt hears his own voice saying those words and - and - and hears how Fisk lets the silence draw out; Fisk's breathing has changed. If Matt's ears weren't so sensitive, he would've have picked up on it, but lucky him.

He's leaning against a smokestack because the night is cold and the brick is warm. The heat is sinking through his thin wet shirt and through the pants, seeping into his chest and - and his thighs. He thinks he's breathing a little funny - because it's cold, and because i'm tired, and

"...tear you apart," Fisk says. Matt adjusts his stance against the brick. He's too hot and too cold and - and - hang up the phone, champ, he thinks. at this point, your honor, the defense can no longer conceal evidence. But Matt doesn't hang up the phone, because he can count the good decisions he's made in the last year on one hand and why break a bad habit now, he thinks, a little crazily.

It might be fair to say that he has clearly gone insane. No one has ever spoken to Matt like that before, with that particular considering tone, heavy with deliberate, careful meaning.

OK. "I think you could," Matt says; his fingers are tingling. "Would you, though?"

And denial has worked well for Matt until now but at this point all he can honestly say is that yes, he just said that, and - and - and he might be leaning against warm brick with his legs spread and his voice might have accidentally just dropped half an octave, but at least both his hands are above his waist and whatever's going on down there is just - it's just - physical. adrenaline.

"No," Fisk says, and that was not a sigh of disappointment he will not let it out. "No," Fisk says again, "I wouldn't." And another pause in which they're panting at each other - this is not right, this is not okay, and Matt almost knows what Fisk is going to say before he says "until you asked, at least," and. shit. Matt hates him more than an little because until this second it had been - a thing that wasn't really happening, and now, now, Fisk made it real and Fisk made Matt the coward. Matt is coward enough to know that he won't - he won't consider it, he won't think of what it might feel like if it was Fisk's solid bulk in front of him, the heat of another man between his legs instead of the -

- the chimney. jesus, this is public, this is the roof of a public building. Matt feels like he's jerking out of sleep; he knows he made some humiliating noise before he hangs up the phone, but he. He can't. He doesn't throw the phone away, is the thing.

(...this definitely is a thing that happened before fisk sees matt's soulmark. uh. for maximum distress.)

i feel like i need to say NOBODY DIES IN THIS, it's just. uh. things are very tense. nobody knows enough to make good decisions but everyone has just enough info to keep making critical errors. ahaha?

...all my formatting got fucked up. bleah.

(NOTE TO SELF: at some point, matt, either wesley or fisk will have a pointed talk with you about how comfortable you are with torturing people for information and what that says about your "i don't kill" policy. but. like. noooooot yet)

I just want to wrap Matt up in a blanket and give him a cup of hot tea or hot cocoa and then cup his face in my hands and say, "Matt. Matty. Matty Matt Matt. Precious self-destructive, anger-managment-issue-filled avocado. You're fucked."

Do I mean literally or metaphorically?

...Yes.

:D

my god, this is such a compliment EEEEEEE :D

(at this point, if you mentioned to matt that flirting with a mob boss and then immediately hanging up the phone looks a lot like "messing with someone and then rejecting them, for kicks," he would be LEGITIMATELY SHOCKED. that wasn't a rejection hang up! that was a panicked public boner hang up!...at this point, wilson is angry, humiliated, and. uh. still can't stop thinking about matt, and he can't even ask wesley about any of this shit.

YOU DESERVE ALL THE COMPLIMENTS IN THE WORLD. Also cookies. *slides over a plate*

Matt is a human disaster with so many Issues that a subscription is required to keep up with them. (Precious, precious self-destructive avocado of my heart.) (Personally I trace back most of Matt's issues regarding emotional attachment to Stick. FUCK YOU, STICK.)

Which makes the whole thing utterly hilarious, because FISK is a human disaster with so many Issues, too, although different kinds, and I now have this image in my head that once everyone has enough pieces of What The Everliving Fuck Is Going On, that Wesley and Foggy are going to have separate or simultaneous moments of dawning horror along the lines of, "They are so bad at normal human interaction, how the hell did they manage to overcome that level of completely fucked up miscommunication?"

Stick is *Jean Ralphio voice* the WOOOOOOOOOOORST when not writing stories about how the universe is out to see matt bleeding and miserable i like to hang out in the kinkmeme threads where we talk about how stick fucked matt up and it took foggy five years to de-feral-ize him.

i choked laughing, because the minute I posted this I thought "and that night, Wesley bolted up out of a dead sleep going WHAT FRESH DISASTER IS THIS without any clue of what happened, just feeling the Disturbance In The Force that is these two, and Foggy woke himself up by falling out of bed and now it's 2am and he doesn't know why he has the strongest urge to call Matt and just shout NOPE WHATEVER YOU'RE DOING HALT, CEASE & DESIST."

Are you kidding me Foggy is still de-feral-izing him that is a constant work in progress (that is constantly getting fucked up do to accidental exposure to vanilla ice cream oh whoops I headcanon'd). That Matt functions without tipping people off to his Issues (mostly) is a minor miracle Foggy had carried out.

(It says something about this fandom that our collective favorite crack ship is Matt/Happiness.)

ALSO I ACTUALLY HOWLED WITH LAUGHTER that needs to happen oh my god it needs to happen, especially Foggy ACTUALLY CALLING MATT AND TELLING MATT THAT (it's totally a corollary to "If there's a stunning woman with questionable character in the room, Matt will find her and Foggy will suffer" *nodnod*).

Re: Matt/Fisk Soulmate AU (bitty little author anon #1 update)

(Anonymous) 2015-05-03 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
...i am c r y i n g thank you for the corollary

(THE VANILLA ICE CREAM. THAT FUCKING THREAD, my god i had all the feelings. all of them.)

...damnit. that scene was a joke. i'm not really going to make it fit in here. it's. uh.

(ever since foggy found out about matt's habit of running around in an underarmor longsleeve and black jeans trying to beat up people who have guns, matt, you idiot, sirens in the night have been waking him up. and it's funny that matt told him that matt used to lie awake, making up stories to go with the sirens, because some nights that's all foggy can do for hours. is that an ambulance? if matt gets knocked out in one of thoe abandoned warehouses, what if there's a fire - what if matt gets trapped in a burning building, fat lot of good matt's ninja senses will do then.)

Re: Matt/Fisk Soulmate AU (bitty little author anon #1 update)

(Anonymous) 2015-05-03 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
...did i mention that foggy doesn't, actually, call matt in the middle of the night? because all of matt's phones ring with the names of the people who are calling - ("FOGGY. FOGGY. FOGGY. KAREN. KAREN. KAREN." shouting out to the beat of Matt's heart where anyone, literally anyone, can hear.) and he never knows where Matt is or who might be able to hear Matt's phone. They had (another - jesus, they've never fought this much before, it is killing foggy) a fight about it. Matt wouldn't give Foggy all the details but the terror in his voice when he tells Foggy that no one can know how they're connected - that's real.

So they compromised, by which Foggy means he gave ground because he was still reeling, still caught in the undertow of Matt's secrets. Foggy doesn't call Matt at night. Matt calls Foggy the minute he gets back to his apartment every night (so help me god, murdock) and lets him know that he made it back safe.

(*whimpers* this is so distressing oh god matt & foggy are both still distressed about this.
i wrote this and then i thought: but claire! matt's burner phone doesn't shout CLAIRE CLAIRE when she calls. pretend that matt made the executive decision that he would never carry a phone with all the numbers of the people who were important to him while he was daredeviling, because that's asking for trouble.)
