let me talk to you bout how i love this prompt

i can't write the fic yet but THIS SHOW, fuck

y'know when you're trying to figure out if a show is commenting on a common trope or whether the show is just blindly following a common trope?

and the thing that struck me was that Fisk is absolutely no-questions portrayed as someone who was abused as a child, and that abuse affects his violent behavior as an adult, and that abuse informs his character.

and whether the show meant it or not, or whether the show wants to acknowledge it or not, they wrote matt murdock as a character who was at very least emotionally abused by Stick - and matt murdock is a character whose violent behavior is also affected by his abuse as a child. like. PERFECT PARALLEL, and if i trusted the show a little bit more it'd be SO CLEVER because hoshit one character was abused in a way that we recognize as abuse, and it led to him being the "bad" character, and the other character was abused "for his own good/ to toughen him up/make him a warrior" and his violent behavior is excused as vigilante action, and THAT'S a clever story.

!!!! YO dude same like it's so interesting?? like i think in someways they definintly blindly followed (are you as upset about this pun as i am i hope you are) but like a he same time it kind of showed how much of an asshole stick was? he was definintly emotionally abused and messed up by stick ("he had this way of getting inside your head") but at the same time, he's rejecting that as a necessary evil? matt's learned, somehow (through foggy?) that while stick helped him, he was also an asshole, and that that abuse wasn't necessary, because he admits that stick was wrong and that he needs friends and he can't do this Tragic Male Hero gig because that's not possible, he can't do that like stick tried to beat in to him that he had to do.

ARGH ok maybe i wrote this comment last night after a beer and didn't even notice that pun :D now it distresses me

(and what's even more interesting is I know this show started off based on Frank Miller's work, and frank miller DEFINITELY has that uncritical "hypermasculine the-weak-die-the-strong-live warrior culture" shit going on so the fact that the show (probably?) comments on how unsustainable that way of life actually is, mentally and emotionally - it's cool!!)

...aw, can you imagine? at first foggy just assumes that matt is a weirdo because he grew up a poor orphan, right, and that matt doesn't - fuck, I dunno, matt doesn't order sour cream on his chipotle because it's an extra 50cents and money was tight growing up?

but matt is incredibly generous as a person, always leaves a huge tip and shit, brings coffee to study group, it's just that his clothes are worn down and his sheets have holes in them and i dunno, maybe his cane is dinged up and he's patching his glasses together with duct tape or w/e. blah blah details.

and finally foggy is fed up with this nonsense so he's like "holy shit, whichever priest told you you gotta live like a monk was an ASSHOLE, okay, it doesn't hurt anyone for you to have nice pants if you can afford 'em,"

and matt answers almost without thinking, y'know, "it wasn't a PRIEST foggy respect my catholic fai -- uh. i mean. NOBODY told me that, i know i can have nice stuff, haha!"

and foggy's like uh huh i gotcha, "nobody," and Hereby Begins the Campaign to Make Matt Enjoy Creature Comforts.

and finally matt gives in out of SELF DEFENSE, okay, because every time foggy passive-aggressively "forgets" to order matt's coffee black and comes back with like a mocha (OR W/E, you guys know what i mean, all that "if i am not always slightly uncomfortable i am WEAK" nonsense, not saying that people don't genuinely enjoy black coffee, just trying to think of examples that wouldn't be foggy overstepping his boundaries and being a shit) well, can't let it go to waste, DAMNIT, fine, i will get myself nice shit i guess.

o m g GOD BLESS foggy would totally think it was some catholic thing he's like taking matt aside like "i may not be the most devote person but i'm like pretty sure you're not going to go to hell if you get guac, matt."

ooOOH and i totally bet he hates asking for help, too, so like at first he just shrugs off foggy's help because he literally doesn't need it, but then he doesn't ask for the things he actually needs either?? like the professors who like to write things up on the board and not say what's up there? and foggy kind of gets the hint and always writes it down and shows it to matt all like "haha dumbass always forgetting to take notes" but then there's classes that foggy doesn't also take eventually he's like "WHY DON'T YOU JUST TELL THEM TO STOP DOING THAT" like it's common sense, which is totally foreign an attitude to matt

matt's all like tragic male hero no....i have to make my own way....and foggy's like "YEAH OKAY BUT THAT DOESN'T MEAN YOU HAVE TO MAKE EVERYTHING HARD ON YOURSELF FOR GOD'S SAKE" and drags him to the office to ask them to stop doing that while matt's like

struggling bc clearly foggy cares for him??? and he cares about foggy??? but if he cares about foggy what if he cares TOO MUCH and gets TOO DEPENDENT and TOO WEAK but it's also really really nice???

Author's Note: This will probably just be a ridiculous and light-hearted series of barely connected vignettes that are somehow still going to be full of angst and hurt/comfort, shamelessly stealing from the fantastic conversation above and, obviously, in respect of OP's prompt, noting how much of an asshole Stick was.

Warnings for this part: referenced child abuse (often)
Potential warnings for other parts: matt murdock's self-sacrificing bullshit, matt murdock's terrible coping strategies (including self-harm in the form of bruising/biting/banging head), matt burdock's massive guilt complex, the nelson clan's aggressive campaign to adopt matt murdock, foggy nelson: emotionally stable superhero, matt murdock: deeply emotionally unstable literal superhero, general fluff and wish-fulfillment

Matthew Murdock is confident and charming and well-adjusted, except for how he is literally none of those things.

Well, Foggy will admit that he's charming as hell.

But mostly, Matthew Murdock is deeply, deeply weird and screwed up in lots of ways that Foggy didn't even know people could be screwed up.

Here's the deal: Matt seems to have a personal vendetta against being comfortable or even happy. He spends seventy percent of his time studying (honestly, Foggy studies too, but Matt's slavish devotion to law school is worrisome) and the other thirty percent of his time hanging out with Foggy. He appears to make a concentrated effort to not make any other friends, since whenever Foggy tries to introduce him to somebody Matt smiles distantly, shakes their hand, says a few kind words, and then walks off, probably to study more. Nerd.

Foggy's sometimes pretty sure that the only reason Matt became friends with him at all was because there was no way to stop it. They just, like, imprinted on each other. Like ducks.

For the first month of school, Foggy's pretty sure that Matt's so weird about his clothes and food and stuff because he doesn't have any money or because he grew up without money or whatever. Matt's clothes are neat but worn (and boring as fuck, but Foggy's pretty sure that's more blindness than anything), and his cane looks pretty old too, and whenever they go out to get burritos Matt always gets rice and chicken and literally nothing else.

("Don't you like sour cream or guac?" Foggy asks once.

"I love guac," Matt says cheerfully.

"Then why don't you ever get it?"

At this point Matt mumbles something unintelligible and shoves half of his burrito into his mouth, and Foggy doesn't say anything else.)

Then Foggy realizes that Matt does have money, and he does spend money. He just appears to be allergic to spending it on something for himself. His tips are impressive and whenever he buys stuff like coffee for other people he refuses to let them pay him back.

And then Matt's sunglasses break and the next time Foggy sees them they've been patched up with duct tape--a lot of duct tape, in fact, there's duct tape covering almost the entire right lens of the glasses--and Foggy knows for a fact that Matt has enough money to buy new sunglasses, but apparently he "doesn't have time" and it "doesn't matter" and "they're still pretty comfortable" (bullshit, they're crooked and the left lens is clearly periodically biting into Matt's cheek).

Yeah, Foggy's not here for that shit, so he finally says, "Dude. Who the fuck told you that you can't have nice things? I mean, is it a Catholic thing?"

Matt looks taken aback. "No," he says. "It's not a Catholic thing." Matt pauses and then says, quickly, "And nobody told me that. I can have nice things, I'm perfectly aware of that, there are just things I don't really need, the glasses are fine, I'm going to get new ones soon, nobody told me that," Matt then mumbles something unintelligible (because apparently in Murdock land that's a great way to get out of uncomfortable conversations) and walks out of the room.

"Dude," Foggy says. "It's one am, where the fuck are you going?"

Matt doesn't come back for the rest of the night. Foggy's pretty sure he went to brood. Matt could win an Olympic gold medal in brooding.

But by now Foggy's one hundred percent sure that the reason Matt doesn't let himself have nice things (even though he spends fifty minutes feeling silk sheets and nice shirts and pants every time they go out shopping) and takes being fiercely independent and self-sacrificing to truly heroic levels has nothing to do with money. It has to do with something else in his past. Or, more accurately, somebody.

It annoys the hell out of Foggy to think that somebody or more than one somebody made Matt feel like he didn't have the right to comfort or happiness or whatever.

So Foggy starts giving Matt toy dinosaurs. No, seriously, that's how it starts. Matt just holds the toy dinosaur like it's a tiny alien, and Foggy explains that it might be nice to have something to fidget with. Fidgeting is great, right?

"I don't fidget," Matt says.

"Yeah, you do," Foggy says unapologetically. "Your sheets are getting destroyed from you picking at them all the time."

Matt puts the dinosaur down on his desk and completely ignores it for days until eventually Foggy does see him lying back on his bed, running his fingers over the ridges of the dinosaur.

Also, once Matt took a sip of Foggy's mocha and appeared to fall in deep love with it, but no matter what, he always gets his coffee black. Literally no matter what, even though he doesn't like it. Foggy knows he doesn't like it, because Matt makes a face every time he takes the first sip of his drink.

And so Foggy makes the mistake of ordering Matt the wrong coffee twenty times in a row until Matt gives up and stops complaining about it, apparently realizing that there is literally nothing to complain about.

A few weeks after Matt finally gives into the lure of mochas, he buys a new shirt and pants, and sunglasses that are more expensive and sturdy than his last pair.

Foggy would feel smug, but mostly he just kind of feels proud.

How could I not be cool with this??? It's honestly the most awesome thing ever!! I love the interaction in fandom and how people feed off of each other's ideas and let things grow! I have just under 2k written for this prompt already and it's probably go to end up three times that size. I'll let you all know when it's on AO3!
