OP, i am WITH YOU TO THE END on this "TACKLING STICK: ABUSIVE AHOLE" and "FOGGY NELSON & THE NELSONS: MURDOCK WHISPERERS" prompt it started out as a good idea and now it's eating my soul i am like you i cannot get enough of this "character x learns about feelings" trope. especially when you have source material, like the show, that is kind of consistently brutal.

(anon forget matt murdock I AM W E E P I N G and cackling at the christmas card holy shit)

ok forget this: canonically, i am a sucker for foggy and matt's brutal fight when foggy finds out that matt's been lying to him, but IN THIS HEARTS & FLOWERS PROMPT that fight never happened, kay?

because. um.

oh, i dunno, OP, work with me here: i have the feeling that that first thanksgiving, Matt gets overwhelmed during coffee and ice cream (because he's also had a bunch of wine, let's say) and excuses himself to the back yard for some Fresh Air. and foggy's mom is like: son. u didn't tell us you were actually bringing your painfully polite lovable orphan friend oliver twist home: is he okay?

and foggy's like: OMG, when Murdock has feelings, he has FEELINGS, give us a sec.

so they're out in the backyard, DETAILS DETAILS, and matt is like "it was super nice of you to do this, foggy, but I CAN'T LIVE LIKE THIS," and foggy is like "what? why? you can't eat food? if you don't eat food you'll die, matt," and maybe you remember how their conversation went better than i do, OP, but. Y'know.

Matt has that breakdown/panic attack where he has to explain the senses to Foggy, right? Because he wants all the hospitality, he wants family, but if he gets soft again, if he loses his edge, how will he even function, literally speaking? Stick was the one who taught Matt how to handle his own senses, remember, and I think the Thanksgiving where Matt is recklessly ignoring everything Stick's ever said to him is EXACTLY when Matt has a panic attack about being nine or ten and totally unable to function because everything is too much, too big, too LOUD. He's rejecting all of Stick's lessons; what is going to happen to him.

And I think he articulates enough of that panic attack to Foggy, because again, all of this family food & love shit is killing Matt because he wants it so much he can't let Foggy think he doesn't want it, that would be rude. also, like i said, THE THANKSGIVING WINE has him talking a little bit more recklessly than he normally would.

so those are MY thoughts?

i forgot to mention: THE SHEETS. YES.

foggy making the call that goddamn, Matt Will Spend Money On Himself This Year, and Matt being like...but i don't want to? can't i give you fifty bucks? I have...literally anything else that i have to do. I'M BLIND FOGGY.

also omg same i loved their fight but this is too good to let that ruin it (besides i mean...it'd be different finding out about just having super senses and just FIGHTING CRIME, WHAT THE HECK MATT, U ARE SO FRAGILE WHY DO U DO THIS TO ME? (bc even if he was not blind matt murdock would likely still be fragile to foggy. the boy cried over vanilla ice cream.) aND, DID WE NOT ALREADY TACKLE UR SELF-SACRIFICIAL TENDENCIES. i am C A C K L I N G oh my gosh, slightly (read: rather) drunk matt murdock is handed a bowl of vanilla ice cream by foggy's mum or dad or idk even just foggy and if he weren't KIND OF DRUNK he'd just kind of smile sadly at it but all of the sudden it's just like...TOO MUCH so he puts it on the coffee table and is just like okay matt walk it off walk it off KEEP IT TOGETHER KEEP IT TOGETHER YOU CAN DO THIS WALK IT OFF MAN, WA L K I T O F F bc what else do you do with emotions except banish them to the pits of your soul and never let them see the light of day? is anyone else imagining beautiful man, UGLY CRIER charlie cox acting this out and weeping with joy?

anyway no yeah he totally gets outside right on track, the train is on the way to emotional constipation station, he's totally cramming every emotion down in to the deepest corner of himself while walking trenches in the nelson's backyard or w/e he is, bc i don't know what hell's kitchen is like or where in the world they are, and then FOGGY COMES AND MESSES EVERYTHING UP BY ASKING QUESTIONS

so like...yeah that definintly happens, it's just a general breakdown of matt being tired of having to live like this and not understanding why he doesn't want to and being so afraid that if he lets himself have it they'll take it away (this boy....this boy got emotionally attached to a man who AT VERY LEAST emotionally abused him, who with which you could definintly make an argument for physical abuse, who STILL LEFT HIM ALONE he couldn't live if something this nice left, too) and lbr it probably ends up with a hug and matt crying and eventually passing out, because that's the kind of sham i am.

also THE SHEETS, NOW AN IMPORTANT POINT IN MATT MURDOCK'S ORGIN STORY BY DECREE OF ME. they totally get sheets after matt says everything is fine 50 times foggy resorts to comparing sheets until finally they find a pair that matt's like...oh..no...these are nice... and foggy's like "fiNALLY GOD BLESS, MATT MURDOCK CAN FEEL COMFORT...i'm making you get the pink ones for all of the trouble u caused me" (he does not but he definintly thought about it) and the definintly, in celebration, both sit on the bed with beers and like the thing is

matt's never really thanked him for doing all of this for him?? so he gets a little emotional (matt is only emotional when there is alcohol bc at least he has something to blame) so he thanks him an apologizes for being difficult but thank you so much...foggy probably is all like "dude it's okay...you're my friend...i got u" cue matt murdock tearing up and smiling like, completely accepting it and realizing wow, stick was an asshole, i am keeping this, eff him.

THE BREAKDOWN FUCK SO PERFECT.

and YEAH in this universe they FIGHT about the fighting crime thing, don't get me wrong, foggy is in fact WE DISCUSSED THIS MASSHOLE

and matt's like WHAT WHEN NOPE

and foggy's like YOU BOUGHT THE SHEETS. YOU FEED YOURSELF REGULARLY NOW. I DIDN'T MAKE YOU SEE A SHRINK WHEN THE GUACAMOLE DISASTER CAME UP, MY BAD, YOU CLEARLY NEEDED TO BE SHRUNK.

and matt's like: FOGGY. TRUTH. JUSTICE.

(...but ok this is just RIDICULOUS I AM A SHAM TOO op because now i'm like: well of course this is the AU where Matt Murdock winds up with a family so when foggy tattles, the nelsons all get together and discuss the situation.

(matt is in the corner. foggy's mom gave him ice cream and told him she was looking at him with concern.

and in this universe, i feel like...like the nelsons get together and crowdsource this crimefighting shit. ok, fisk holds all the police in this town, police can't be trusted? take them out of the equation. this is gonna get handled. nobody in our neighborhood call the police, come talk to the nelsons if you're having trouble. need money for medical bills? what kind of medical bills, Our Matt knows an ER nurse.

oH MY GOSH yES

the nelson clan convincing nay forcing matt to realize that his pain is NOT GOOD and shOULD NOT JUST BE BRUSHED OFF, but that being said if he's gunna fight crime then he's not going to do it alone.

we're also missing out on possibly the best, is the fact that STICK COMES BACK and EVENTUALLY ONE OF THE NELSONS WILL HEAR ABOUT THIS, and stick is like..as good as dead. matt is like holding foggy back like "fOG NO IT'S OKAY I GOT THIS"

and he's like "SOMETIMES YOU STILL DON'T ORDER GAUC, sO NO, YOU DON'T. LET ME AT HIM I WILL TELL MOM" and matt is like

so offended?? but also kind of touched?? but mOSTLY OFFENDED bc no one has threatened to tell an adult since mother superior. but like in this au...matt can totally just like??? blatantly tell him off?? like YEAH YOU KNOW WHAT ASSHOLE?? I TOTALLY DO HAVE SILK SHEETS. I HAVE THEM BECAUSE YOU'RE AN ASSHOLE AND YOU ARE WRONG FOGGY SAID SO and that ice cream bracelet doesn't hurt so much this time around

also the nelsons probably just...eventually end up sending get well cards on a bi-monthly basis just as a general cover all catch all for all of matt's various injuries of carrying severity
