Slavery AU; Foggy gets Matt for a college graduation present
(Anonymous) 2015-08-17 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)Foggy did *not* expect that his mother has so little trust in his abilities to keep himself alive that instead of the Ipad he asked for for Columbia, she bought him a house slave.
(also, said house slave is blind. He was probably cheaper than the Ipad.)
"Mom, did it escape you that I *hate* the slavery system? That I'm becoming a lawyer *specifically* to *help* people in that situation?"
"Don't knock it till you try it, dear."
...sooo yeah. Slavery AU, where slavery is a normal part of everyday modern life, and Foggy (as always) gets stuck with Matt. Who is actively *hating* being dependent on someone and already has a reputation of being one of the most stubborn and resentful slaves ever. (your choice why is enslaved. Whether he got into too much debt, whether he took the fall to protect someone else, whether that's just what happens to orphans who don't get adopted before they're 18...go nuts)
I'd love it if this goes basically the plot of the show - Foggy slowly, gradually manages to convince Matt that much rather than a pet/servant he is actually only looking for a friend, and if he could free Matt on the spot, he would (sadly, the emancipation process requires that a slave has been with that particular owner for several years. The earliest time Foggy would be able to free Matt is just a few months after he will take the bar exam). Matt slowly, gradually, realizes that Foggy really *wants* to be his friend, doesn't think of him as less than human, and...actually instead decides after a few days that he is simply not going to tell anyone that he technically owns Matt, and instead asks him whether he wouldn't like to also be enrolled in the same classes Foggy takes. (since people are allowed to register their slaves for education and degrees - after all, it will make them more valuable workers. "And no, dad, seriously, I just want him to be able to help me study!")
Matt actually wanted to be lawyer before...everything...happened.
When he finds out that Foggy actually *wants* him to use that brain of his, wants him to use it to go to *Columbia* with him, he is determined to become the best lawyer Foggy could wish for. (Whether Foggy will free him after they've taken their bar exam or not. Foggy has promised, has already filed the paperwork, but, like most slaves, Matt knows better than to hope for freedom before the last signature is put down. People can change. Owning people usually changes people.)
Only Foggy doesn't change.
In fact, Matt finds out surprising things every day - Foggy *wants* him to backtalk, Foggy *likes* it when he jokes, when he is a smartass or sarcastic, Foggy *never* punishes him, or orders him into bed, even when Matt tells him he is legally allowed to demand 'any kind' of service when he notices how attracted Foggy is to him - but Foggy simply treats him like...a friend.
His best friend.
Sometimes Matt is actually able to legitimately forget that he is even a slave.
Foggy lets him come and go when he likes, no explanations needed, encourages him to start relationships with free people, tells absolutely *no one* (well. Almost no one. But at least Marci seems decent enough to keep her mouth shut) that Matt is legally owned by him, and it's...a normal life. A life Matt hadn't even dared hoped for the day they gave him his tattoo. (again, up for debate which way the slaves in this universe are marked. Tattoos, brands, microchips, collars, manacle-things - just should be something Matt might be able to easily conceal in day-to-day life.)
Foggy allows Matt to take the bar with him. ("It's an investment, dad. His lawyer wages will be mine to keep," Foggy says on the phone in a bored monotone, before whispering 'only ninety days until you're free, dude!' while also cheerfully ignoring everything else his father says on the other end in reply.)
Foggy signs them on for an internship with Landman and Zack. The firm finds Foggy's treatment of Matt curious - slaves and interns are pretty much kept under similar working conditions, sure, but they've never had anyone who ticked both boxes - but accept.
Matt doesn't tell Foggy he's gone out to beat up a free man the night before their internship ended.
He doesn't even tell him when Foggy says he wants to make Matt's dream of their own firm come true. (Slaves don't have dreams. Matt did.)
Foggy gets them both apartments (only two months to go now until Matt is free. During those last weeks slaves are already allowed to live on their own if their owner allows them to, just to see how they'll manage).
Matt 'manages' by finally buying very specific black clothes from his allowance and going out at night a whole lot more.
Claire mostly flips her shit when she realizes that the half-dead guy she pulled from the dumpster isn't even a legal person and more likely to get her sued for theft and property damage, until Matt can explain to her that a) he'll be free in like two weeks and b) Foggy would much rather *defend* anyone who patches up his errant property than sue them.
It's the truth, Matt thinks. Even if he doesn't tell him, Foggy wouldn't *forbid* him from doing this, would he? He never forbids Matt anything. The worst he ever got was scolded and sent to bed when he'd been up studying for 20 hours straight. Or ordered to eat when he'd forgotten for a day.
Foggy *wants* Matt to do what he wants. He always tells him. Right?
The reason why Matt wanted to keep the revelation about his senses and...maybe...the night time activities until *after* he is freed, is definitely just because...Foggy would worry, right? Pointlessly.
Of course Foggy would free him next week even if he knew. Of course.
Matt gets his answer when Foggy rushes over to his house the next week, freshly arrived emancipation papers in his hand, and only waiting for their signatures.
If only Nobu hadn't died two hours earlier and Matt was now lying bleeding out on his (technically Foggy's, *everything* is technically still Foggy's, even Matt's torn skin) couch.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-19 06:30 am (UTC)(link)Because he's blind. Disabled people still capable of any labor contribute to the economy and 'don't leech off the government' by giving that labor for free, wherever they're assigned. (For inspiration, see Goodwill)
When his blindness was registered after the accident, he ceased being his father's child, or even his dependent. In the eyes of the law, Matthew Murdock (#_____)
became Jack Murdock's property.
'Its just some piece of paper, Matty. It don't mean nothing.' He almost convinces himself, but not Matt.
Matt can still get an education, but even when Jack can legally file an application for freeman citizenship, he won't have any of the options he had before.
Jack has no connections and Matt can't pass for sighted. He'll still have to do slave level labor, but have a harder time getting hired as his freeman status entitles him to minimum wage.
It gets harder and harder for Jack to see Matty reduced to a number. He skips meals to buy an accountants appointment, and learns that he'll either have to provide for Matt for the rest of his life, or will his money to Matt in a special way that would be hard for Matt's owners to get ahold of.
Then he's approached by The Fixer. He's still years away from freeing Matt, but this is the best shot he'll ever have at providing for him. He wins and bleeds out in the alley behind the apartment.
St Agnes homes untrained slaves. Matt's isn't educated, he's trained. The therapists train him to walk with a cane. St Agnes' school trains him to serve others instead of making others accommodate his disability. Then he meets Stick and is trained to fight and suddenly his teacher is gone and the money is gone and all he has is crumpled strands of vanilla scented paper.
(Probably finish this tomorrow I'm p just super tired rn)

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)Love the idea that Jack died because he saw it as the only way to ensure Matt's future, but that would probably end up a darker and grittier slavery AU than the 'runs parallel to the show' prompt. I'd personally like the idea that Matt always thought Stick was gonna adopt him (and thereby save him from enslavement and being sold when he was 18) and his departure therefore hit that much harder.^^°

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)I'd love to read a scene where pretending-to-be-a-free-man!Matt for the first time absolutely *destroys* someone in a mock trial during class, surprising Foggy with the viciousness he hides under his servile demeanour. When Foggy congratulates him, Matt grumbles that yes, he might have won that debate, but if his opponent had known that he was a slave, he could have ordered him to kneel on the floor and shut up, so he's taking that victory with caution. (But he still can't hide the smile at Foggy's praise).
I'd love to read a scene where Foggy gifts Matt with a new collar (I'm trash, all my slavery AUs feature collars) since he is legally mandated to wear one and could get in trouble if ever checked for ID without one. But because Foggy's awesome, it's one Matt can easily hide under his clothes - it's long, thin red leather, and so wide he can even quickly pull it over his head without opening it. Foggy blushes a bit when he tells Matt that it's a model from the section for female slaves, but it was the only one he was reasonable sure would never show up beneath a shirt, and sorry about the glaring colour, but, uh...do you like it? I'm sorry that was a dumb question, of course you wouldn't *like* that stupid thing they're making you wear, but -
It's the first time that Matt has hugged him, ever.
I want to read that scene where Matt thinks about how being Daredevil is so incredibly *freeing*, finally a state where he doesn't have to worry about being outed as a slave, a place where he is ony absolutely *equal* footing with the free men he fights, and if they're slave traffickers - well. Matt has a LOT of pent-up feelings on that subject...
I'd love to read a scene where Foggy has to take Matt to various appointments (with the Dean, with Doctors for yearly mandatory check-ups, with the disability councillor) because Matt himself can't sign or agree to anything - it's his owner's decision what the doctor checks, what classes Matt takes, etc. Luckily, it does not seem *that* weird to other students that Foggy apparently takes his blind 'roommate' to a lot of places as a guide...
I'd love to read a scene where Matt goes to the municipal bureau to fetch some paperwork for Foggy concerning his emancipation process. What kind of people work there? Do they treat him like a child/object? Are they genuinely trying to be helpful? Is it a mix?
I'd love to read a scene where at some point Matt and Foggy manage to joke about Matt's ass literally belonging to Foggy the same way they manage to joke about him being blind on the show. Like, Matt by then trusts Foggy with nearly everything, *knows* Foggy would never mistreat him ever, and therefore phrases like 'you're a terrible slave, Murdock. I should whip your ass six ways to sunday' actually DO become a joke, because the very idea is nowhere near terrifying like it usually would be, but instead completely ridiculous.
I'd also love to read a scene where Foggy actually *does* pull the owner card to force Matt to sleep/eat/relax/ stop beating himself up. It chafes Matt badly to be treated like a slave for the first time in over a year, and Foggy feels kind of terrible to remind him, but at the same time Matt *needs* to give himself a break. All the conscience conflict for Foggy and all the confused feelings between 'restrained' and 'comforted' for Matt, please :3
Last, but not least....what does Foggy DO when he finds out?! Emancipate Matt regardless? Or put a stop to daredeviling? Or makes Matt promise to stop until he has figured out whether to release Matt after all?
Re: Slavery AU; Foggy gets Matt for a college graduation present
(Anonymous) 2015-08-24 06:46 am (UTC)(link)Stooooop this!!!! I can't. All of these are perfect and four of them are actually exact fucking scenes I've been thinking about. Four. I... may have bits... *cough*
Oh and I'm trash too, anon, collars all the way.
Re: Slavery AU; Foggy gets Matt for a college graduation present
(Anonymous) 2015-08-24 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)Re: Slavery AU; Foggy gets Matt for a college graduation present
(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 02:47 am (UTC)(link)Also the scene where Foggy gets Matt and new collar though in my head I had an idea that it's because Matt's old metal collar was chaffing him and he tried to hide it from Foggy (who is not happy about that) so Foggy has to take Matt to the doctor (because I share your idea that slaves have zero right to consent to anything themselves) and the doctor suggests like a super fancy leather fleece-lined collar or something (because some states require locked metal collars but not New York thankfully for Matt).
Foggy ordering Matt to eat is another. Or to stop studying. And he feels awful especially because afterwards Matt's a little wary of him because maybe this is it and Foggy's going to keep treating him how he's supposed to but then he grudgingly accepts Foggy was right and it was pretty much 100% a friend worried about another friend rather than owner and slave.
I also have this idea that at first Foggy tells Matt to do things often not even meaning them to be orders but just like he'd ask anyone for something (like 'pass me the book' or 'can you put the pizza on I'm on a roll with this essay and if I get up it might disappear') and they're technically orders so Matt can't disobey but Foggy thinks he's just saying them like he would to anyone else. And once he realises he's really upset and maybe that's another time he orders Matt deliberately but it's basically 'I order you to not obey any order you don't want seriously dude if you're tired just tell me to get the damn book myself'.
And of course the scene where Foggy finds out. I have so many ideas about how that would go down. All of them pretty much involve Foggy freaking out about the consequentness too like
"Do you even have any fucking idea what they'd do to a slave who hurt a free man? You think I'd even get to see your body?"
"Foggy-"
"No, fuck you, Matt. Did you really want me to be told about my best friend's death when the cops show up to give me a fine for an out of control slave and notice that you'd been destroyed?"
Re: Slavery AU; Foggy gets Matt for a college graduation present
(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)And the revelation scene...aaah, so *Foggy* that he d break out the 'best friend' line, he is too fantastic for words! (It would also be interesting what he would think if the punishment for Matt getting caught for him would be more severe than a fine (yes, just looking for way to up the guilt for Matt here...)) But ah! I *so* wonder what he would do. I can see him walking out the door with the signed papers again 'I can't do this right now, I need to go home for this' and Matt basically trying to kill himself on the couch, wondering whether this is it, whether Foggy is writing an ebay listing for him *right now*, 'worst slave on the planet, will give money if you take', whether Foggy will even turn him in to save himself, whether Foggy is thinking up the worst punishment he is capable of, Matt s first punishment in his care *ever*... (unaware that walking out the door was probably already that worst case scenario for Matt anyway...)
...buuut yeah. I am *so* torn what Foggy would do. Would he release him right away still when he gets back the next morning? (And thereby floor Matt again)? Would he keep Matt a little while longer, just because he is so scared for him? (And maybe free him after Fisk is down?) I m fairly certain Matt would be freed 100% eventually, I just don't know how and when Foggy would do it, and what would be his specific reasoning. What do you think? :D (will also comment on your wonderful minifill as soon as I m not on mobile anymore, loved it!!!)

(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 03:34 am (UTC)(link)--
“I know he’s blind but he can cook and clean and he’ll even help you study. He’s got a bachelor’s from his last owner, they had him as a study aid as well as a house slave.”
Foggy looked up from the ownership papers with a frown. “His old owner paid for a degree but sold him?”
That was unusual, not the degree, there were slaves out there with PhDs, why not train them for six figure jobs when you didn’t have to give them a cent of it? Companies saved millions training slaves these days. But even though slave tuition was marginally cheaper, it wasn’t cheap and it was odd to have one just as a study partner and not keep them for the eventual income they’d provide.
His mother smiled. “Their loss is your gain, darling.”
“I’m not taking him!” Foggy snapped. “Mom, did it escape you that I hate the slavery system? That I'm becoming a lawyer specifically to help people in that situation?"
“The papers are in your name already,” his mother said stubbornly, unmoved by his outburst. “And I’m not going back to the market so you either take him or sell him yourself.”
Foggy’s hand clenched around the stupid documents and his mother gave a victorious smile. They both knew Foggy loathed the slave markets. And his mother had guessed, correctly so, that between owning or selling, he would choose keeping a slave as the lesser of the two evils.
Foggy wondered how many slave owners started like that.
He sighed.
“What’s his name?”
His mother’s smile was infuriatingly triumphant. “Name him whatever you want, darling, he’s yours now.”
--
The most-decidedly-not-an-iPad was still standing in the living room where he’d been left after Foggy had dragged his mother into the hall to find out why exactly he'd been presented with a goddamn freaking person as a graduation present.
“So... do you have a name?”
“You can call me whatever you wish, sir,” he replied immediately, with a small bow of his head, the padlocked collar around his neck clinking softly.
“Okay... what if I wish to call you what you want to be called?”
The slave’s mouth twitched slightly at that and for a second Foggy thought he was going to smile but it was gone just as quickly.
“My previous owner called me Dean.”
Foggy almost rolled his eyes but stopped because he thought it might be a little rude. Then he internally rolled them again at that thought because blind.
“Do you want me to call you Dean?”
He expected another evasive non-answer (he might make a good lawyer too) but was pleasantly surprised when the slave tilted his head slightly and said, “Matt.”
“Matt it is then,” Foggy announced then- “I’m smiling by the way.'
Matt looked surprised and for a second Foggy thought he'd get an actual smile but after a moment, he simply bowed his head again.
