Re: Slavery AU; Foggy gets Matt for a college graduation present
(Anonymous) 2015-08-25 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)Except Matt doesn't sign because the slave also has to agree to be freed, it's literally the only thing they get a say in in their whole life (though it never comes up for 95% of slaves).
Because, if he still owns him, Foggy legally has to check up on Matt every day to make sure he's not getting into trouble (cue mildly hysterical laughter from Foggy at how well he did THAT). So if Matt signs, he's free and Foggy will leave. If he doesn't sign Foggy still has to come back.
And Matt desperately wants Foggy to come back.
Then... argh I don't know how it would go. Yes totally Matt would end up freed eventually (and omg Karen would be so confused calling them because she's like 'are we not celebrating Matt's freedom today did I get the date wrong WHAT IS HAPPENING FOGGY IF YOU CHANGED YOUR MIND I WILL CUT YOU). But I love your idea of Matt melting in a pool of despair on the couch so maybe Foggy just like 'fine have it your way' and once he leaves Matt's like 'THAT WAS MISTAKE HE'S GOING TO SELL ME'.
I'm thinking maybe Foggy tells Matt if he won't be freed he'll order him to stop and Matt has a crisis. Or Foggy just comes in every day and refuses to say anything beyond 'hi... you're not dead that's good bye' then when he tracks him down at the gym he brings the papers again and promises if Matt signs them they can work things out and Matt signs it so fucking quick after that.
Oh and for the fine thing, I do thinks it'd be way worse than that because with what he's been doing I imagine if he'd be caught Matt would have just been killed right away and the cops show up with a fine for Foggy and a 'sorry we had to put him down, body's already burnt, maybe you can claim for a new one on your contents insurance whatever have a nice day'. (that's what I meant by 'destroyed' (sorry I didn't explain, that's what I meant by death- the cops killed him) because they always use that term for dangerous dogs they put down and I've always found it an awful way to refer to it so OF COURSE I had to use it for slaves because I am awful too).
Re: Slavery AU; Foggy gets Matt for a college graduation present
(Anonymous) 2015-08-26 10:30 am (UTC)(link)Though obviously in Foggy's head losing Matt would be the worst thing imaginable I can't think what else would work. He could lose his license to practice law maybe, but I'm sort of imagining slaves are treated like dogs, like your responsible for their action but it's understood you can't control everything they do...
Maybe the punishment could be ha can't own a slave for 10 years and it's kinda funny BUT NOT BECAUSE MATT YOU WOULD BE DEAD.
Re: Slavery AU; Foggy gets Matt for a college graduation present
(Anonymous) 2015-08-26 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)'...I'm sorry.' In a voice barely a whisper. 'If you do want to sell or punish me I would understand, but-'
'I won't.' Foggy cuts him off, voice hard. 'Just because you apparently lied to me a *lot*, it doesn't mean that *I* was lying when I said I wouldnt ever do either of those two things.'
There is a bit of a pause and then Foggy sighs, his tone becoming softer after he does. 'I'm not...it's just...look, I need some time to process this. Don't come in today. I don't think I'm ready for that yet.'
Another pause. 'Karen s coming. Thanks for getting me stuck with explaining to her why you re not here as a newly free man today, by the way. Take care.'
The line goes dead. Matt stares sightlessly at the phone in his hand, feeling empty.
Re: Slavery AU; Foggy gets Matt for a college graduation present
(Anonymous) 2015-08-26 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)But yeah, I totally would love and support the idea that Foggy would definitely free Matt just because on the principle that slavery is simply dead wrong, and no matter what stupid-ass decisions Matt makes, it should be his *right* to make them.
Matt cocks his head. '...when I tried to pull two all-nighters in a row, you ordered me to go to bed instead. I think that was the first order you actually deliberately gave me.' He points out.
Foggy huffs. 'And you know each time I made you do something for your own good - and that was like half a dozen times tops, by the way, I still maintain you were - are - the least ordered-about slave in history - I felt terrible about it afterwards.' He sighs, looking weary. 'And if finding you half-dead taught me anything, it s that I apparently can't prevent you from making piss-poor decisions anyway. So. This is me, cutting my losses.'
And then, yes, totally that scene at the gym, where Foggy kind of realizes just how important he is to Matt, that this connection is an actual reason for Matt to *not* choose his freedom, and then, when he realizes how big that sacrifice is, tells Matt that he will have to order him to stop if Matt remains his property...
*cue Matt crisis*
...but would much rather attempt to repair their relationship as two free people instead. With Matt s consent to become his own person and Foggy s assurance that he won't walk out but try to move forward with Matt together. Yes? :3
Re: Slavery AU; More Ideas HALP
(Anonymous) 2015-08-26 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)Maybe she realizes at some point when Matt takes her home and Foggy casually tells Matt about the time of his daily check-up call tomorrow or something? ('Check-up call? What, does he need to make sure you get up tomorrow or-?' - 'oh, no, it's a legal thing. Since I'm not seeing him tomorrow, he needs to give me a call. I'm, uh, technically not his legal partner yet. More like...his...slave. I do have my own place, though,' he says, in fact sounding a bit sheepish. Karen tries not to stare *too* wide-eyed at him, but fails.)
And, oh god, all the ideas. Like, there s probably permits you can get for slaves to allow them to do stuff, and Matt has them *all.*. In fact, Foggy pprobably walked into the municipal bureau and waslike 'Permits. For slaves. I need *all* the forms, now.' And now Matt has the legal documents necessary to show that he is allowed to leave the house, to carry money, to make transactions, to have relationships with free people, to use public transit, to drink alcohol and eat in restaurants, touse the internet and send mail, and to be out at night. He also has the legal permit to carry a gun, smoke, and drive a car, neither of which he actually wants to or *can* do anyway, he tried to explain to Foggy, but this hadn't actually helped. At some point he is pretty sure Foggy also accidentally tried to apply for the permit allowing Matt to get pregnant, but he is quite happy *that* one got refused by the municipal officer).
Matt keeps the little permit plastic cards in his second wallet, the one he would dearly like to forget he has to carry. His regular wallet only holds his cash, his subway card, student ID, and a credit card noone will hopefully notice is actually made out to Franklin Nelson. Nothing that would give away his legal status when he gets it out to pay for coffee or flash his ID to the security guard at campus. His wide collar containing his government-issued ID chip lies invisible under his shirt most days, but Matt is pretty sure that even without his enhanced senses it would feel like it s burning against his skin. He manages to avoid situations where he would get carded or need anything else but his student card and therefore would have to pull out the collar for a police chip reader, for the most part (it s a good thing josie's never checks Foggy or his friends, so he and Matt mostly go drinking there) but whenever it happens, he can feel his face burning, too.
In day-to-day life no shopping clerks or postal office workers ever ask him for his permits, like other, more visibly collared slaves get checked, and Matt does his best to keep people from suspecting. Tries to strike the delicate balance between the hesitance expected from a blind person and the confidence expected from a free man. It s a tiring act, but Matt knows the alternative - getting asked to show the permits *every time* he does something, a practice that is so time-consuming most owners simply clip the plastic cards to their slaves' collars instead, an easy practice since most slaves only have one or two anyway - would be so much worse.
Sometimes, when Matt goes home with someone from the bar - Foggy seems always happy when he does, even if his heartbeat sounds kinda in two minds about it - it's a hassle to keep them from taking his shirt off or groping at his chest before he has had a chance to gracefully slip into the bathroom and remove the damn collar to stuff it into his pants pocket before they can see or feel it. He never manages to keep.any relationship for long - that would require telling them at some point, but the only one who can ever know is Foggy, and so it s mostly just fhe two of them at the end of most nights - not that either of them seems to mind.
Re: Slavery AU; More Ideas HALP
(Anonymous) 2015-09-01 09:21 am (UTC)(link)Ugh, yesssss. Then Matt would probably spend the whole day trying to figure out if it was better or worse to force Foggy to keep checking in when he has to hear him being all heartbroken and upset with him.
Lol, Karen would be so annoyed and she'd be really confused because at first she'd be like 'what the fuck foggy' then Matt's like 'no it was me I refused, what do you mean I have to explain why no reason none at all I'm not the man in the mask what'.
And yeah, Foggy has such strong principals (and omg he's so cute when he pretends otherwise, Foggy you never could have been a big corporate lawyer you're so adorable) he'd totally want to free Matt no matter what.
I love the idea of Foggy putting it to Matt at the gym and saying if they're going to work at this it'll be as two free people, they've always been equals but this time the law agrees and Karen already got that 'Nelson and Murdock' sign so come one let's give that a shot like we always promised.
Random aside too- Brett. Because I was having all these thoughts about how the line between Matt acting free but not actually breaking the law by pretending he's free. Which I could ramble on about a while too like there are rules but they're bent not broken like how Matt needs to identify himself as a slave in certain situation (I imagine a bank would be one) and when asked by a free person but 'hey you never asked so?'. But the point of this was Brett probably knows Matt's Foggy's slave because Matt's been to the police station a few times and they probably have to sign in or something if they're talking to clients being held there so instead of making him announce it, Foggy told Brett the situation and Brett wrote it down on the form but hey it's no one's fault if the other officers aren't checking right?
Lol, that whole ramble was because the very next scene after that if with Brett and I'm thinking Foggy and Matt file the forms and free him between leaving the gym and going there and Brett would be one of the first people Matt talked to after he became Matthew Murdock again and I don't know what to do with this idea but it seems important.
And yes, I have many Karen ideas too. Like I imagine she's way more the 'norm' when it comes to her ideas about slaves but after Matt and Foggy save her life and she offers to work for them (well, Foggy at that point), she tries to actively change her thoughts but perhaps still slips up sometimes but like, tries and learns. And she's totally counting down the days as much as Foggy is.
Ohhhh I totally had through of that too! And Karen's like awkward about it and asks awkward questions like she did with his blindness too. 'So how long has Foggy had you? Did he buy you for the firm?' but Matt lets her because he needs her trust and in time Karen pretty much matches Foggy in her passion for slave rights.
OMG I love the permit idea. AND FOGGY WOULD. And Karen finding them one day like 'Matt you can drive?! How does that even work????' and Matt's like 'IT DOESN'T IT'S CAUSE FOGGY'S AN IDIOT'
Ohhh also I'm a huge Josie fan so like, what if she totally knows and that's why she never cards him? She can tell they're trying to keep it quiet so she never asks in case someone else might see. Except Josie doesn't give a fuck who's drinking so long as they pay then it turns out Foggy's slave is good people so she looks after them in her own way (still waiting for that 'Josie looks after Matt and Foggy prompt to be filled :P).
Wow why do I always reply to this thread when it's late lol. One day I'll post coherently and at a resonable time but as they saying goes, today is not that day :P
Re: Another bit, also not even a mini-fill
(Anonymous) 2015-09-02 11:41 am (UTC)(link)“What? He *voluntarily* refused?”
“I…yes! Completely out of the blue! I don’t…argh!” Foggy wants to tear his hair out. He doesn’t know what to do, he doesn’t know what to tell Karen. He can’t outright lie to her, but telling her the truth is out of the question, too. He groans and for a moment considers simply eating the emancipation papers and hoping he chokes on them.
“Foggy,” Karen says, slowly, “Did you ever…in any way…maybe say something that he would think you would no longer be…I dunno, close?” she winces at her word choice, “after you freed him?”
Close? I wonder if we ever were, Foggy wants to snap, but doesn’t. It’s not entirely fair, and he can’t tell Karen about that betrayal anyway.
“I don’t think so,” he manages tersely.
“What if…” she bites her lip. “What if…especially after the car crash, what if he feels *scared* of everything right now, Foggy?”
Foggy wants to laugh out loud. *Scared*? “Scared of *what*, Karen?” Matt seems to be not even scared of being gunned down like a rabid dog, isn’t scared of losing his life, apparently, so Foggy isn’t sure what his errant slave ever really was scared of.
“Scared of losing you,” she says quietly, and Foggy for a moment feels like he’s been dunked in a vat of ice cold water.
“…what?” he repeats, looking at Karen, wide-eyed and uncomprehending.
“I…read about it a bit. Slave psychology. After learning that Matt was your…you know, and wondering why he was so…different from regular slaves, and generally wanting to know how he would feel about everything of this. I, uh, maybe also wanted to avoid making him feel like a lab specimen by asking him everything personally.”
“Uh-huh,” Foggy manages, blinking and generally having no idea where this is going. “And what did that say?”
“Well….” Karen looks actually a bit embarrassed now. “I feel bad talking about him behind his back like this, but it said that slaves can actually develop abandonment issues fairly easily when their owner attempts to free them. Especially when they, well, like them. And it said that even if a slave seems capable of independent thoughts and managing on their own, sometimes…well, even if Matt said he was looking forward to his freedom, I think…” she swallows. “I think if he thinks there’s a choice between either still being a slave or losing his connection to you…he would choose you, Foggy, every time.”
Foggy stares.
He would choose you.
You’re the most important thing to him.
He would sacrifice his freedom to be with you.
The sentences all mean the same and echo in his skull like a rising chorus of voices that for a moment threatens to drown everything else out.
“You…think?” he manages to croak out. Even though he actually doesn’t need to ask any more. Matt had voluntarily given him complete control over his life for at least one more day, after all, expecting Foggy to be judge, jury and executioner all in one, literally offering him everything he had to make up for what he did.
And that was…well, if that wasn’t so utterly *Matt*, Foggy didn’t know what.
“It could be,” Karen says. “I can’t imagine any other reason why he would choose to continue to be owned. You know how much he hates it,” she says quietly, looking a bit sheepish because she probably knows how often she had to have reminded Matt of the fact by questioning him about his status, (and definitely cringes at the one ‘experimental order’ she once gave).
“I….” Foggy opens his mouth. Closes it again. Opens it again. “I think I have somewhere to be,” he says, and barely manages to grab his briefcase on the way out.
xxx
“Matt. Listen to me.” Foggy’s voice sounds earnest, subdued and solemn. Matt doesn’t want to listen, doesn’t want to hear how Foggy has reconsidered, will sell him after all, will let him get taken in by the police, will tell him maybe to get lost, list him as a runaway and wash his hands off him.
“Matt,” Foggy says again, and this time Foggy’s tone sounds just a little more firm, and Matt reluctantly has to lift and turn his head to show that he’s listening. He refused to be freed, he knows, and in turn that means he still has to obey when Foggy gives an order. He kind of suspects that the ‘don’t obey any orders you don’t want to’-order ceased being valid the night Foggy found him on his couch.
“I’m listening,” he forces himself to reply, heavy, bloody hands clenching uselessly at his sides. He can hear his own heart thundering in his chest, Foggy’s heartbeat going equally as fast, but that only tells him Foggy is conflicted and scared about what he wants to tell him, not what he is actually going to say.
“I brought the papers again,” Foggy says, and the rustling tells Matt he is holding them in his hand. “Though with your senses you could probably tell anyway, couldn’t you?”
“I can tell you brought papers,” Matt replies, voice hesitant. “Not what is actually on them. I’m…still blind, Foggy.”
Foggy. Matt wonders whether he has lost ‘Foggy’ privileges forever. Whether Foggy will make him call him ‘Mr. Nelson’ or ‘Sir’, or ‘Master’ now. If he keeps him.
(Also he can tell that those are the emancipation papers. They smell of salt water from that terrible night, but he isn’t going to say that.)
“Right. Yeah. Well, I brought the Braille versions, too,” Foggy says, for a moment sounding almost like his old self. He doesn’t hand the papers to Matt, though. “I thought about this again.”
“Right.” Matt echoes, voice tight. He doesn’t know what’s going to happen to him, what Foggy is going to decide to do with him, now that Matt in his moment of desperation had chosen to hand himself over to him again. He still doesn’t know whether that was the right decision or not. The collar underneath his sweat shirt burns against his skin hotter than ever before, but he doesn’t dare touch it to remove it. His world focuses on Foggy taking a breath.
“If you continue to be my property, Matt, I will revoke your permit to leave the house at night. You will still be allowed to work as a lawyer, but there will be no more Man in the Mask. We will probably also have to have a a bit more…traditional slave/owner relationship.”
The words hit Matt like a punch to the gut.
No, it’s not the worst it could have been. Even kept under more strict rules, living a life owned by Foggy would probably be bearable and even nice, under most circumstances.
But Matt’s aren’t those circumstances.
He would always be able to hear the sirens.
He would always be able to hear the screams.
He doesn’t know whether he will be able to do this.
Matt can hear his blood roaring more loudly now, feels like the ground beneath his feet is giving way, making him fall down into an abyss. The city needs him in that mask. He needs Foggy. Foggy needs him too, but as a friend and a docile slave, not an untamed vigilante with bloodied hands and bloodier skin.
Matt hears a raw, horrible sound, and it takes him a moment to realizes that it’s him who does it, the voice his throat makes sounding like a wounded animal as he collapses to his knees, the exhaustion of the workout, of his injuries, of the emotional rollercoaster overwhelming him.
“What the – holy hell, Matt!” There is a displacement of air and he can hear Foggy dropping the papers, rushing toward him, catching and cradling his upper body before he can completely fall.
“Matt? What is going on, shit, are you still hurt, I’ll-“
“It’s…no, I’m fine, Fo-fine, sir.” Matt manages. Foggy has caught him by his shoulders, then moved his hands to cradle and steady Matt’s head against his hips. He’s comfortably kneeling next to a standing Foggy now, hands on his body restraining and comforting him, and a fuzzy part of Matt’s brain supposes that this is how it should be, would be for any slave lucky to have such a kind owner, would be for Matt as well if he didn’t have to be so goddamn *difficult*.
“’Sir’?” Foggy repeats the address, incredulously. “Fuck, Matt, did you hit your head?”
“...no,” Matt manages. He refuses to turn his head up again, even if he suspects Foggy will force him in a moment anyway. “No, I…you just said I would need to behave myself more like an actual slave, and I, I’m *trying*, Foggy-“
“OR,” Foggy says, and then he is suddenly sinking down, squatting next to Matt so that instead of Matt kneeling at his side like a proper pet, they’re at an equal eye level. Matt lifts his head, confused, as Foggy continues, “If you would just sign the goddamn papers, Matt, and I can stop being your owner and just be your best friend, who won’t leave you no matter what kind of stupid decisions your newly-free head makes, we can try to move forward again. Together.”
Matt for a moment, is speechless.
“You…would?” he whispers. “Free me? And…*stay*?”
“Of course I will.” Matt can hear edges of mouth pull into a small smile. “Matt, the day I met you I basically thought you were trouble. But I never, ever thought of exchanging you for that Ipad I originally wanted even for a minute.” His hand slips into Matt’s hair as he speaks, curling into it a little and staying there. “I’m still pissed you lied to me, Matty. But I’ll stick around regardless what you do. Nelson and Murdock, right?”
His hands reach for the fallen papers and the pen that had been rolled up in them. “Only if you want to keep being a costumed loon at night, it’ll have to be on your own head. Go ahead, make your choice.”
Matt signs the papers *so* fucking fast.
xxx
uuuh, yeah. So I also have so much more to say about the rest of your post but that might have to wait until *I'm* more coherent. Especially about Brett. God, do I have ideas about Brett. XD
Re: Another bit, also not even a mini-fill
(Anonymous) 2015-09-02 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)How did you make slavery!fic so sweet? That's amazing. I love how it never occurred to Foggy that Matt might be scared of losing him and that Matt values Foggy being in his life more than he values his freedom.
And Karen! Researching things because she is curious af and once she wants to know a thing, she doesn't stop. I am also really curious about what order she gave Matt and how he responded.
(totally here for any Brett related thoughts you might have, btw.)
Re: Another bit, also not even a mini-fill/2
(Anonymous) 2015-09-03 11:06 am (UTC)(link)Dude, you have no idea, I am *all* about fluffy slavery AUs! :D If I wanted to, I could take even that medical examination/humiliation prompt a few pages over, and fill it with so much fluff and humour not even OP would know what happened. XD
Literally my favourite dynamic is all about powerful characters being enslaved by *really* nice owners who treat them (for the most time) as equals, let them run around free, and the strong character still chafing against his bonds whenever he is reminded that he’s a slave. Until the two of them either manage to overthrow the entire slavery system or at least manage to free the slave character for now :3
But now, Brett thoughts!
I have this idea that the time when Brett finds out about Matt’s slave status is the worst possible timing – like, it’s been a few months since Foggy moved to Columbia and became friends with his new ‘roommate’ Matt, and Brett has heard him talk about him a couple of times, or maybe they ran into each other once or twice. This night, though, Foggy and Matt somehow manage to innocently be caught up in a police check-up at a college bar – nothing major, they’re not in trouble or anything, it’s just them plus a bunch of other college kids and the police (including Brett) are all herding them outside to check for weed or whatever – only problem: of course a few people at the bar were there with their slaves, and the police are currently in the process of separating them, herding the slaves together to be put into the holding bins for the night (since slaves can be checked for having ingested illegal substances without their consent) until their owners can retrieve them in the morning.
Brett comes over to them to check their IDs per routine protocol, thinking he can just let them go like the majority of the others, because he knows Foggy isn’t a pothead and neither is probably his straight-laced roommate, right? But when he asks them…
“Right, there you go,” Brett says, handing back Foggy’s ID to him. “I’d be more likely to find cheez-its than marijuana in your pockets anyway, Nelson. Now, I just need your ID and you’re free to go back to your dorm, Murdock…?”
Brett trails off with his jocular tone as he notices the expressions of his childhood frenemy and his roommate. Murdock has his face turned to the ground, lips thin, while Foggy looks almost pleading, but he isn’t sure why.
“Hey, what’s the matter?” Brett asks, grip tightening around the flash light he’s holding. “Please don’t tell me you *actually* have something in your pockets.”
“No. We don’t,” Murdock replies instead, and his voice now sounds more weary than anything. “But if you want to get my ID, you’ll have to get out the reader,” he says – and then proceeds to reach into his shirt and pull out a collar. A collar with a standard issue government slave ID chip, which, when held in front of a chip reader, will display registration number, name of owner, and zip code of holding for the slave who is wearing it.
For a moment, Brett is dumbfounded.
“Uh, very funny, guys-“
“It’s not…it’s not a joke, Brett.” Foggy looks at him, pleading. “Matt is actually…”
“I’m not a free person. Sir,” Murdock says through gritted teeth. “Foggy – my owner - just treats me like I am.”
Brett stares. “You…you mean…but you never *mentioned*-“
“*You* never *asked*,” Foggy shoots back immediately. “And we’re not doing anything to break the law. Technically.”
“My being here is perfectly legal,” Murdock continues, and now he sounds more resigned than anything. He reaches into his back pocket and pulls out a holder with some plastic cards. “Permit to drink and be out at night," he says, feeling the little Braille stickers on the cards as he holds them out to Brett. "Even to buy my own alcohol. So you won’t have to keep Foggy here.”
He snaps the card holder shut again and pockets it. “I suppose you’ll have to take me to the other slaves to be put through the tests for substance abuse, then?” he asks wearily, tilting his head into Brett’s direction and it’s eerily accurate, the dark glasses almost making it look like he could really see him.
“Matt – I’m so *sorry*-“ Foggy says, putting a hand on his arm and looking so incredibly dismayed, that Brett abruptly surprises himself by saying,
“Uh, you know what? Don’t bother. Just go home.”
“What?”
“What?”
Now the two of them are looking at him with almost identical expressions of confusion.
“Yeah, you heard me,” Brett nudges his head toward the direction of campus. “I can see you’re clean, the dogs didn’t bark at you, and we, uh, don’t have the facilities to tend to…vision-impaired slaves. Yeah. So yeah. Go home. Shoo.”
Go…home.
Leave.
Don’t be outed to half a dozen of your peers from campus who would see your ‘roommate’ being made to stand publically collared with the rest of the slaves in the bins.
Brett knows exactly what he has just saved them from, but the sudden naked expression of gratitude on both their faces is *still* unsettling.
“Brett…thank you,” Foggy breathes, and even Murdock seems seems a little lost for words at the moment, one hand still closed around his own loose collar.
“Don’t mention it. *Especially* don’t mention it to my colleagues,” Brett mutters under his breath, noticing Murdock’s eye brow raise as if he had heard that last part perfectly well. “Thank you for your IDs, sirs, have a nice night,” he then says, more loudly, waving for Foggy and his – friend? Pet? Live-in boy toy? Brett honestly isn’t sure what they are, exactly – to leave. As they pass him, he also can’t help but whisper a last “And tuck that girly collar back under, Murdock, you look ridiculous.”

(Anonymous) 2015-09-03 12:29 pm (UTC)(link)You could? Even taking in account all the speculation going on in the discussions?
Wonder what you'd do with the vigilante-slave prompt a couple of pages after that.
Anyway this was really nice. Brett's a really decent person, because if Matt had been taken in with the rest of the slaves there's no way his status would have stayed quiet.
Re: Another bit, also not even a mini-fill/2
(Anonymous) 2015-09-03 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)(He also knows Foggy - when in one of his moods - enjoys a bit of humiliation at Matt's expense, and while that's not Matt's favourite kink, ultimately the best thing in the world for him is making Foggy happy, so he grits his teeth and heads with Foggy to the appointment, knowing that at least one of them will probably have fun there.)
Third important key: Matt is still DD. He *could* wipe the floor with everybody in the practice if he so chose, but he wants to reflect well on Foggy, so he doesn't. Still doesn't preclude him from revenge thoughts while being poked and prodded, and the more worryingly detailed they get, the more comedic potential.
Then, it's important to keep the balance. Matt *can* be confused at times, *can* be startled and flushed, and humiliated and panicked at what's going to happen next, BUT it would also need to be established that deep down somewhere he trusts Foggy implicitly and *knows* Foggy isn't *really* going to sell him. The rest of the time, Matt would be highly embarrassed, and *very* annoyed and - of course - very likely also a bit unwillingly aroused because of the physical nature of the exams and (more important) the fact that Foggy is enjoying this at his expense. I'd be careful to insert some canon flashbacks here and there - i.e., Matt clawing his fingers into the sheets on the doctor's table during some procedure, fuzzily wondering whether a repeat fight with Nobu wouldn't be more pleasant than *this* - to put the exam in perspective; it's by far not the worst Matt has lived through, it's safe, it's humiliating, yeah, but there aren't any *real* stakes (other than his dignity forever).
Next, banter. Like I said, I'd write Foggy and Matt sniping at each other before they even head down there, and then sometimes have the doctor leave the room, so a trembling, groaning Matt can complain how Foggy is the cruelest, worst owner *ever*, and Foggy can be highly entertained and absolutely non-moved (because he knows that as long as Matt can still complain, he's fine). ("And besides, your blowjob technique really *does* need work." "Bite me, 'sir'.")
In between, I'd make it clear that Foggy values Matt's well-being and feelings far, far more than he does the doctor's opinion, which is expressed when he sometimes stops something, which he knows is something Matt *really* doesn't want and would be a hard limit for him.
Maybe a particular type of restraint that would bring up really bad memories of something. (Maybe Matt suddenly looks at him, a look of *genuine* panic on his face, and Foggy, slightly surprised, but then understanding, stops the doctor and tells him to do something slightly different. Cue also a brief petting for Matt to calm him down again. Foggy wants to have fun at Matt's expense and punish him; not actually scar or do anything to break his trust.)
Matt and Foggy would also be communicating over the doctor's head -
Doctor: "As a next exam, I would also like to test his endurance."
Foggy: "Sure, sounds brilliant."
Matt: *listening until the doctor's head is turned, then mouthing toward Foggy*: You. are. NOT. serious.
Foggy: *whispering incredibly quietly*. "Deadly serious. I'm having fun here."
Matt: *unthinkingly jerking against his restraints* No, Foggy, *please* -
Foggy: "Hm, doctor, I'm sorry, but he seems to be getting a bit anxious. If we could get started quickly, please?"
Matt: *rapidly cycling between panic and seething thoughts of vengeance*
...soooo, yeah. It would be easy to incorporate all the suggestions, the important bit would just be to regularly let Matt get a grip back on himself in between him getting flustered and humiliated, make it clear that Foggy not only loves Matt dearly, and isn't *actually* thinking that slaves/subs/omegas need to be treated like children/animals but views Matt as a fully capable adult partner and gives him (usually) the respect and the agency he deserves, and also make it clear that this exam is at the very least dub-con, if not full-con (even if Matt only endures it because of guilt/wanting to make Foggy happy), and in the end, Foggy couldn't have simply forced him to undergo it (and would likely end it if Matt would seem *completely* at the end of his rope on the table). Add a dash of banter and funny griping, and done! :D

(Anonymous) 2015-09-04 10:01 am (UTC)(link)STOP IT OMG this totally counts as another bit/not-a-minifill-but-who-are-we-kidding-it-so-is.
And I am SO for finding out secrets in the worst way. Give me all of them. All of them. (and holy crap is this similar to my idea of how Marci finds out (well, confirms because she totally had an idea) with the police separating slaves etc)
BRETT I LOVE BRETT and he'd totally be okay with it. Especially since they aren't TECHNICALLY breaking the law, he's never had experience with blind slaves they can't hold them right? Oh they can? Honest mistake no I don't remember who he was with it was dark and there were lots of people there you know.
Matt and Foggy's reactions thought, ugh, so good. Because Matt would totally be willing to actually stand with he other slaves if he had to. Because Foggy would get in trouble if he didn't and Foggy's not that well off a fine would be a real hit to his bank account. So he'd do it and lose all the freedom he's gained from people just not realising his status, because it is freedom and holy crap he's missed even the taste.
And Foggy wouldn't treat him any differently at all, he wouldn't care. But EVERYONE ELSE WOULD. And that would just make life harder for everyone concerned. Sure there's probably like a few other people who treat their slaves like Foggy but that's not normal and people would treat it like such. (though people treating Matt like the piece of property he legally is would hurt Foggy more than anything people said about him).
Also I headcanon Matt to be pretty much only really close with Foggy in law school but even in this AU he's probably friendly with other classmates and that would all go to pieces once word got around (and it would). Matt's not technically lying and you'd think future lawyers would appreciate that but reality is harsh and Matt and Foggy know they wouldn't.
God dammit I'm so in love with this AU. Dammit.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-04 09:21 am (UTC)(link)OMG YESSSSSSSSSSSS I love this so much, so much. I love Karen's speech, I love that she's researched this stuff and I totally love that she's clearly goods and supportive of slave right etc now but had to learn and adjust to get there.
And the talk at the gym OMG MATT of course he would jump to the worst possible conclusion before Foggy can even finish ugh Matt you adorable worried idiot. And his crisis over not being Daredevil anymore. Help.
'sir' uggghhhhhh Matt. And Foggy being confused help I love it.
Foggy's line about exchanging him for an iPad cracked me up hehe :P
Re: Slavery AU; More Ideas HALP/2
(Anonymous) 2015-09-03 11:13 am (UTC)(link)….sooo yeah. If you look at the post below, I *love* the idea of helpful!Brett and that he would also be on board with helping Foggy help Matt conceal his status as much as legally possible and save him from humiliating situations. I also adore the idea of him writing it on the form when checking in at the police station instead of forcing Matt to say it out loud. Also yes to the rest – I definitely think slaves would have to answer truthfully when asked whether they’re free or not (Matt lies. A lot.) and in certain situations, like bank, or doctor, etc. they’d probably have to state it somewhere. If Foggy doesn’t have to take him to the doctor anyway.
Also would love to read that scene where Matt talks to Brett for the first time after becoming legally a person again! :D I could imagine him showing up maybe with an entire basket of nice things, for *once* for Brett and not his Ma, and going just…”Thanks. For everything.” :3
And oh god, yes, KAREN! It would be *so* incredibly in character for her to make her as awkward about him being a slave as about him being blind, and I *love* the idea that Foggy (and the events) kinda reform her. And Matt just being resigned and submitting to it, because he can tell that she isn’t exactly coming from a mean place, just an unthinking/socially awkward one.
xxx
(In his apartment) Karen: “You’re really…I mean you’re *actually*….” *stares at him some more* “So, if I said ‘Make me a coffee’, as long as your owner doesn’t order you to do something else, you’d actually have to…?”
Matt: *unhappy grimace* “Yes. I’d have to make you a coffee. Though I really would prefer to be asked instead of ordered. Sounds strange and eccentric, I know.”
xxx
But oh man, yeah. I’d love to wonder what else she’d probably ask him. I wonder whether she actually would be curious or absent-minded enough to actually DO give him an order once, and what it could be :3 Ideas? XD
(also had to laugh a *lot* at the idea of her finding Matt’s (driving) permits! (‘How does that work?!’ ‘IT DOESN’T!’ Ahahaha XD)
And yup, love the idea of Josie caring for Matt and Foggy, too. Just this entire supportive network of good people in Hell’s Kitchen that care for enslaved!Matt and therefore also get cared for by DD. :D
xxx
Other random ideas:
- Of course, Foggy is really, *really* late in thinking of registering Matt for classes. However, the lucky thing is, there’s still lots of spaces available, since it is highly unusual that slaves ever get enrolled in law school at all – after all, you wouldn’t want them learning about their rights and ways to fight for them, or anything…(which suits Matt and Foggy just fine in the way that it means people are even less likely to suspect that Matt isn’t free).
- Marci. How does she react when she somehow finds out Matt is a slave? (maybe she finds his permits/ownership papers by accident? Maybe Foggy accidentally says something incriminating?) Does she tease Matt? Give him a few ridiculous orders? Not change her behaviour toward him at all?
- Just in case for Matt/Foggy (I’m fine with either friendship or slash, but in case there’s gonna be romance) – I’d love a scene, pretty much at the beginning when Matt doesn’t yet trust or know Foggy that well, where Foggy is maybe in the shower, and Matt can hear him working himself up, maybe breathing Matt’s name under his breath, and Matt, already in bed, can’t help tensing up, because he *knows* what will come next, once Foggy comes out of the bathroom, has known what would be coming as soon as he noticed Foggy was attracted to him. And he’s already trying to not let it get to him, he *knew* that strange honeymoon period of ‘nice owner Foggy’ would be ending soon, and maybe, he’s hoping, Foggy will even be gentle and *try* not to hurt him, even though he can’t possibly know how *much* Matt feels -
…only then, Foggy eventually comes out of the bathroom, already dressed for bed, flops into his bunk, and goes. ‘Night, Matt’ without anything happening at all, and Matt being all ?????? for hours.
(Bonus if he later on even tries to initiate something with Foggy and *Foggy* refuses on the grounds that he is happy for Matt to pursue anything he wants with anyone else, but Foggy can’t bring himself to start anything with Matt as long as he still legally owns him because he feels conflicted. Matt is incredibly frustrated.)
- Stick. When he comes back in this universe and maybe finds Matt’s collar and permits in his apartment, how does he react? Is Matt even angrier that Stick left, knowing what kind of fate he was leaving him to?
- Matt’s scars and bruises. Does someone see them and immediately assume Matt must be the most disobedient slave ever?
- Matt always carefully negotiating the fine line of technically not *dis*obeying a free person ever, but never making it seem like he was anything more than casually polite.
(not sure how to work this into the whole thing, but): Fisk and/or Vanessa finding out that Foggy owns Matt, Fisk and/or Vanessa taking a liking to him and offering Foggy an inordinate amount of money to buy him.
Foggy: “Hmm. That is actually an amazing offer. We could get Nelson and Murdock out of the red. We could even pay Karen a decent salary.”
Matt: “Yes. Perfect idea. Apart from the fact that you would be selling your *best friend* into SLAVERY.”
Foggy: “Eh, it’ll be okay. He’s used to it.”
Matt: “Worst. Owner. EVER.”
Re: Slavery AU; More Ideas HALP/2
(Anonymous) 2015-09-04 11:31 am (UTC)(link)I already mentioned my love for Brett because yes. And omg I can just see them coming to talk to him and maybe Brett mentioned something about not drawing attention to themselves at the precinct because if they look into it it will not take long at all to see Matt belongs to Foggy and Matt's like 'what are they going to do to a free man though' and Brett's just like super happy and once all this is done with he's so buying a round (and also because he doesn't have to bend rules anymore too really he's buying one round but they owe him so many more).
And yes, hehe. Because she is like that and in the first episode I was kinda cringing over some stuff she was saying but at the same time people DO say that but then she gets so much better because people also do that and that's awesome too.
Ohhh I loved that order idea you mentioned in the fic and idk, maybe something innocent but a little annoying. Like nothing too mean but something a normal person would be like 'no do it yourself'. Maybe she does make him make her coffee in the office once because that's her job but just to see if she will.
And Matt can tell afterwards how guilty she is and how much she regrets it because now he's probably wary of her and the truth is, even though he can tell- he is.
Should Foggy find out though? Because he'd probably be mad but like, he KNOWS Karen is just awkward and wants to learn so he's like trying to contain it but seriously?????
- Yes, so here for that. I think a lot of this prompt rests on acting as if nothing's different about Matt so no one ever thinks there is. Aside from the obvious I mean but even that's fine because he acts like a normal, free blind person so why would anyone suspect otherwise. And he might have to say if people ask but he acts so normal that even if people did suspect they probably wouldn't risk highly offending a free man with the question.
-MARCI, I love Marci so much. I mentioned up there I kinda had this idea she finds out similar to Brett where Foggy, Marci and him go to a party which turns into a disaster for a few reasons (Matt did try to warn Foggy 'slaves usually go to parties as entertainment you know'). Eventually the cops show up and Matt's lead to the rest of the slaves but THANK GOD it's a party with some of Marci's old friends and no one from their classes is there to see except Marci who's like 'I KNEW IT I KNEW SOMETHING WAS WEIRD HERE'
Then the whole way home she's like "So, Matt, how long have you been Foggy's property?" and Foggy's like 'please stop' but Matt's actually kind of amused because in the end Marci's like 'whatever, I don't actually care since this affects me in no way, bye'. And she pretends not to care at all but she joins the 'hide Matt's true status' team.
- I have to say, I'm can't really write romantic ships in this show (sorry!) I'm not really sure why but if I filled this I'd probably go gen (however I do tend to write Matt and Foggy as so close any sane person would probably think they were together lol). THOUGH I am 900% here for bisexual Foggy Nelson who can totally see Matt's attractiveness and YES so much to Matt hearing Foggy getting worked up and being like 'oh well... that's it then'. And OF COURSE Foggy wouldn't even think about it, even if Matt's like 'I'm cool with it' because so long as he owns him there's still that element of dub-con and even that's too much for Foggy.
-OMG my original idea for a fic for this actually had Stick selling Matt himself once he was done with him to get a bit more money out of him (why I asked how much you liked him lol) BUT I totally didn't think about high school education like you mentioned in your other comment so there's that to figure out. He'd probably be like disappointed but unsurprised. 'I knew you weren't smart enough to get out of being sold, never could do what you had to, bet your getting attached to your owner now aren't you. You can't really believe he's going to free you?'
-That'd so be his cover for most people but OMG KAREN, maybe the first time she sees it Foggy's already seen him and been 'what the hell?' so he doesn't react when Matt walks in with a massive bruise and immediately assumes Foggy actually does beat Matt and it really confused because Foggy's super nice to Matt and he's going to free him so physical discipline just doesn't fit with that picture???
-Yesssss the fine line between acting free and breaking so many laws by pretending to actually be free is so what I'm here for.
I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO GET THAT EITHER BUT I'M ALL FOR IT.
Also, I LOVE the idea of Matt and Foggy joking about selling him all the time. Like Matt annoying Foggy and Foggy just being 'I AM LISTING YOU ON EBAY RIGHT NOW'
Matt: No you're not, you're looking up Thai restaurants that deliver this late.
Foggy: Blind slave for sale, bit of a dick, good price, and possibly psychic. Also, you want noodles?
or when Foggy won't stop trying to get them to make a baseball team and Matt's just like 'Foggy seriously, I'll sell myself at this rate.' hehe.
It's late again so I'm not even going to proof read this rambling mess of a comment lol :P enjoy.
Re: Slavery AU; More Ideas HALP/2
(Anonymous) 2015-09-04 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)(I'm so here for awkward!Karen, btw. Like, when Matt is about to head out somewhere from his flat or the office, maybe she'd be like: "Uh, are you...allowed to?" she asks, then almost audibly flushes when Matt simply raises an eye brow at her. "I mean, like, I didn't hear Foggy give you...permission to leave, and I know, uh, people with your...status (now Matt is positive he can *actually* hear her cringe) aren't technically allowed to go anywhere on their own, right....?"
Matt: *currently debating on whether 'Damn, Foggy, forgot again! Do you see my leash anywhere?!' or 'Karen. Do you remember I literally *walked you to my flat* on my own the first time we *met*?' is the more appropriate answer.
Karen: *beet red*
Matt: *sighs* There are actually permits for that kind of thing. Foggy got me almost all of them during the first week after he got me.
Karen: Oh, right, I didn't...
Matt: *still completely smooth dead pan* So he doesn't actually have to walk me several times a day any more. Or take me to the slave park to play with the others.
Foggy: *poking his head in* *mock-stern expression* "Matt! Stop being mean to our secretary!"
Matt: *grins* Of course...sir. *and cheerfully waves as he disappears out the door*
Foggy: *looks over at a highly embarrassed Karen* I swear, my mother bought me the most dickish slave she could find and he was probably meant as a punishment.
- and hah, maybe after she accidentally/not-so-accidentally makes him make her coffee, he puts it on her desk, and somewhat cooler than usually goes, "Your coffee. I hope you don't have any more orders for me, because when my *owner* gets back I should probably have made some progress on the work he had me actually trained for."
Cue hugely apologetic Karen and Matt's feathers being smoothed enough that when Foggy gets back, he can see *something* has happened, but whatever it was, at least Matt and Karen both smile at each other again. (And Matt totally *could* tell Foggy about the order, and maybe later he does, but right now he doesn't, and she's really, *really* grateful for it and friendship. :D)
- Oh. Would be a totally random scene, but what if Karen and Matt are out, run into someone (maybe a friend of Karen's?) and she accidentally/naively introduces him as 'Oh, he's the slave of my boss' without him actually getting a word in edgewise before? Cue them of course immediately unable to resist touching him briefly, as you would a cute pet, and Matt next to her doing nothing but that *very* polite smile that immediately makes Karen envision herself as fired by Foggy forever. (Foggy to Matt later on: "Hey, you're the one who made us take her case. This is all on your head now if you can't train her how to behave.")
- and yeah, I mean, part of why I love DD so much, is that Matt not only has to conceal a *secret identity* like a lot of other super heroes, but *also* that he is able to nearly compensate for his blindness - SO, what better way for an AU than to give him yet *another* secret he has to conceal? XD
- and ooh, love the idea about Foggy dragging Matt to a party against Matt's warnings 'nah, it'll be fine, no one will know you're a slave, we'll have fun' without considering (because young+drunk) what it might be like for Matt to see the other slaves used as 'entertainment', knowing that this could so easily be him over there. And then, he, maybe he's just a bit drunk, and not watching out for a minute, and Foggy's at the other end of the room, and someone accidentally discovers his collar and goes 'wait, whaaaaa-? Guys! Whose is this one?! He's *gorgeous*!' and as Foggy's head flies around with a panicked expression and Matt is about to die of shame, the door opens and the cops show up. (Maybe they heard that there's illegal slave-pimping or sth going on here, even if it was a false alarm, now they have to check).
- and yes for Marci on the 'doesn't really care' team, that's exactly what I would have thought - I like her, too. Maybe she occasionally 'orders' Matt in front of others to massage her shoulders or something, and even if Foggy is like 'dammit Marci!' Matt manages to take it gracefully and in some fun - mainly because he knows that this is actually more like teasing between peers and not Marci actually thinking he is less than a free man.
- as for slash or gen - eh, I'm fine with both.^^ In the mini bits I wrote I only had hints at slash, anyway, so the kind of close-friendship-can-be-mistaken-for-pre-slash-if-you-squint relationship is just perfect :) Really, the most important thing in this whole master-slave disaster is the trust-aspect, and there romance or friendship doesn't really matter :p (But that doesn't mean that Matt knowing exactly how attracted Foggy to him is and being wary is in any way less delicious. And Bonus for Matt feeling safe in his presence. Like, if it was really *hot* in the dorms during summer, he knows if he wants to he can simply lie on the bed with his book, wearing nothing but a pair of pants and his collar, and even if he can feel Foggy's heart beat spike at the sight, absolutely nothing is going to happen to him.)
- Stick: ooooh, yes, what a perfect line! (about him being disappointed that Matt has not only managed to NOT somehow get out of slavery on his own, but ALSO *grown feelings for his owner* What are you, Matt, a pet? You were *meant* to be a warrior! (and, oh god, new thought: What if that was Stick's plan all along? He actually *wanted* Matt to get enslaved, just to make sure he'd become emotionally numb and cynic after being treated like legal property for a while. Maybe he was even planning to come back when he'd be sure Matt would be an emotionless, hate-filled wreck, chafing to get violent revenge and then he'd have his warrior (who would also have learned to obey orders without question by then).
And instead he finds...Matt, who has people he loves, who still laughs at stupid jokes, who still believes in justice instead of murder, who would have no problem to give his own life for the person who owns him - and who has the same unbreakable will as ever.
"I had hoped your owner would break you."
"He put me back *together*."
And YES for him trying to plant the seed of doubt in Matt's mind as for Foggy truly freeing him. Because he so would.
"And what is *this*?" Stick's cane spears and picks up his collar Matt had left in his apartment when he went out. Slaves aren't really allowed to take their collars off, ever, but the Devil of Hell's Kitchen is a free man.
No runaway slave who could be traced back to Foggy in any way, at any rate.
"That the girly collar he is making you wear?" Stick sneers and Matt can feel the heat rising in his face, but his fists are clenching with anger.
"That is the collar which lets me live as a *free man*," he snaps back, teeth bared, trying to snatch the collar dangling from Stick's cane, but the old man is faster, of course he is, flicking it out of reach.
"You realize how ridiculous that sounds, right?" Stick snorts. "You're his property, kid, not his friend. You're an investment to him, nothing more. If you stay, you're gonna be wearing that thing for the rest of yer life."
"Give. It. Back." Matt growls, fury coiled tight in his frame. He *hates* his collar, that's true, but...it's still the first thing Foggy ever gave him (bare some hand-me-down clothes before they went shopping for the first time) it's the first thing Foggy bought for him, and he wants it BACK.
He certainly doesn't want *Stick* touching it.
"Heh," Stick spits on the floor. "Seems maybe I misjudged things. They *did* break you after all - you most certainly *are* owned now." He angles his cane and lets the collar slip down to his hand, holding it close to his face, more for dramatic effect, Matt guesses, because there is not much point to 'looking' at anything closely, for them. He can hear his old teacher's lips stretch it into a contemptous grin. "Is he good to you when he fucks you, too?"
Matt isn't aware of much after that, but there is a faint tinge of regret when the first piece of furniture Foggy bought for him shatters against Stick's head.
- and ahah, yes, the bruises! Foggy being like MATT WHAT ARE YOU DOING PEOPLE ARE GIVING ME DIRTY LOOKS and maybe the two of them being like that at a doctor/hospital visit, too - like, maybe Matt got into a fight at campus before when they stopped a rape or something (in close combat, it wouldn't even be that weird for a blind person to be able to land a punch) and then they're at the doctor's office and the nurse being there being like 'O.o' and Matt *sitting on examination table* is basically like 'yeah, my fault, I'm a terrible slave. I accidentally ran my last owner with a lawn mower, that punishment was totally warranted' and Foggy giving him like a 'what the fuck, Matt'-face from the side lines, but unable to contradict him, because the truth would likely get Matt destroyed/sequestered/sold. ("you basically gave me a heart attack at the doctor's office. I *should* punish you if you ever do sth like that again, you are officially insane." Matt: 'Hmm. You could threaten to blind me with a laser, I hear that works wonders.")
And Karen, yes. Foggy's 'no, he's...*really* clumsy' is only going to get him so far after a while. But yes, *epic* confusion XD
-speaking of which, what do you think the ballon scene would look like this time with Karen? Would she already be guessing at the abandonment fears or figure that out afterwards? What kind of questions would she be asking? Would she buy the car crash story this time that easily or assume it has sth to do with Matt's status that he doesn't want to tell people about?
- and so YES to that selling joke! I had to laugh so hard at the dialogue (and the idea that Matt at some point starts suggesting to sell himself)
What if, like, after the adventure but shortly before Matt's officially freed:
Foggy: Oh man. No wonder those 'I'm gonna sell you' threats never worked if you could tell I was lying the entire time. Dammit. *contemplative face* Hmm. So. What if I said...'I'm gonna gag you and tie you up outside if you don't shut up'?
Matt: *sitting on the couch, cocks his head* Hmmm. Lie.
Foggy. Dammit. Oh. 'I'll starve you for the next three weeks'?
Matt: Lie. Also, you're getting hungry now.
Foggy: *glowers* 'I'm gonna smack your ass if you don't stop monitoring my bodily functions, Murdock'
Matt: *grins* Truth, actually. Takeout?
Foggy: Hell, *yes*.
Re: Slavery AU; More Ideas HALP/2
(Anonymous) 2015-09-14 03:49 am (UTC)(link)I LOVE YOUR AWKWARD KAREN. And yes I love that she would ask questions like without thinking just because she may not have direct experience with owning a slave but she still knows how they're supposed to act and be treated so this whole things Matt and Foggy have going on is like so confusing.
And ohhh yes Matt would totally call her on that because really Karen? But she would so realise pretty quickly it was a dick move and I love the idea that Matt not telling Foggy is kind of like his acceptance of her apology.
- YES I love that idea. And Matt just has to endure this person touching him and commenting on him because acting free is one thing but it's not like he can just be 'I'm not a slave'. And it would be a really good wake up call for Karen too because she genuinely likes Matt and seeing him be treated like an object is just really not fun and Matt just points out that's how people treat slaves which Karen KNOWS but all of a sudden it's not just some stranger on the street she can pretend doesn't matter because they're 'just a slave', it's Matt, who's never 'just' anything and hey, maybe none of those other slaves like it too and now she kind of gets Foggy's intense dislike of the system and his crusade against it just a little more.
- The party yes! I just kind of want it to go very incredibly terribly and Matt's treated like a slave for the first time in a few months and Foggy gets upset and seeing that and also that he caused it and now Marci knows and oh crap this is awful. Also, I like the idea that even though Foggy's really against it, seeing other slaves getting treated badly now has even more impact because THAT COULD BE MATT.
- Lol, she so would, but she would justify it because Matt just keeps destroying her in debates and hey payback right? Though it's also another reason she won't say a thing because she hates losing but she loves being challenged and no one's taking away her best debate partner, she is going to beat him one day and a stupid collar will not stop her.
- Lol, I'm glad that's cool, I wish I could write romance but it's just not happening but you can take half my writing as pre-slash cause I'm in it for super-close friendships so I don't mind other bits going there, it's not a stretch lol. And YES, I love the idea of Matt feeling totally safe around Foggy, and I also love the idea of him being terribly confused the first time he realises it because this feeling is actually really new to him like what? Ugh.
- I LOVE IT. He would, ohhh he so would. And I LOVE your little scene, especially Matt defending Foggy and saying he put him back together help. Also Matt being protective of his collar too because, it's like a symbol of what he hates but it's from Foggy and being Foggy's slave doesn't even feel like being a slave hardly at all.
- HAHA Matt, I love it. And he'd totally do it with Karen too like 'omg what happened?' "Oh I got Foggy's pizza order wrong' and Foggy's just like 'ffs Matt, can you wait until we know her better before your bad jokes?' and then there's like ten minutes of 'okay no seriously Karen Foggy does not hit me I'm blind and super clumsy it's a blind thing'
- Ohhh I'm not sure. I think she'd be seriously confused about Matt not being free but I wonder what excuse Matt would try and tell her because she sees him before Foggy. Maybe he'd just me like 'I don't want to talk about it' and Karen assumes Foggy's changed his mind until she sees him and then she like 'ohhh I was reading about this' and cue that other but you posted :P He'd probably stick to the car accident claim because it's as plausible as anything else. Not sure whether Karen would believe it. She might think Matt had been attacked and was just ashamed to tell her because at best Foggy could sue for 'property damage' and she'd know how much Matt would hate that.
Oh also!!!! I will reply to your other scenes soonish (omg I love them so much help) but you are a mind reader cause I was totally thinking about the Nelsons too. Like my normal headcanon is that they adopt Matt as their other son basically but like they would not do that with a slave and it's not like they can pull the whole 'just pretend to be free' trick. But I kinda feel like Foggy would put his foot down at anyone actually giving him orders and after he's freed ohhh would it be like awkward or would they have come around to the idea and be pleased so many possibilities.

“Hey, Foggy?”
“Hm?”
“Since this is my first month anniversary as an officially free man, I got you a replacement for me.”
“What? Matt, that’s…” Foggy looks at him, utterly baffled by what Matt could mean, but since he’s grinning like a loon as he hands Foggy the heavy package, Foggy opens it anyway.
It’s an Ipad.
“Guaranteed to be less trouble and, I was told, also having a functioning optic sensor,” Matt says, and that is as far as he gets before Foggy starts laughing, and tearing up, and hugging him, and then Karen comes in, asking what is the matter, and when they tell her, she joins them in the laughing and tearing up and hugging, and that, Foggy supposes, is what he would have missed out on if his mother *had* bought him an Ipad all those years ago. Maybe it’s time to forgive her a little.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-14 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)AWkward!Karen FTW. I could see her at one stage going 'I keep giving Matt orders when I don't want to, Foggy HELP' and he'd suggest doing what he did, like, giving Matt the one standing order that he *doesn't* have to do what she tells him if he doesn't want to. And maybe sometimes Matt is going to screw with her, after, going 'Make me', after she tells him to 'Oh god, shut up!' when they're joking around, and grinning, because they both know she *could*, but she *wouldn't*.
- also, I'm terrible and may have written that scene. I had the idea that maybe Matt tells her when he takes her home some variation of:
"But...you're not wearing a collar?"
"It's under my shirt," Matt says, and he sounds wary and...*embarrassed*? about it, which surprises Karena little. Because slaves...they don't get embarrassed, right? They can be ordered to walk around without clothes, and perform all sorts of tasks free people would cringe away from and refuse to do, so embarassment really can't feature in a slave's life too much. Can it?
Only she's never met a slave that acted quite like Matt did.
"Why?" she manages, mystified and then, adds before she can help herself, "Can I see it?"
Matt sighs, looking even more uncomfortable than previously, but obliges and pulls out a thin, red collar from under his shirt that seems more fit for a female slave than him. But it does have an official ID chip embedded, which clearly marks it as a genuine tag of ownership instead of a discardable fashion item. He lets it drop onto his chest where it hangs low, almost grazing the lower end of his pectoral muscles.
"I can't exactly wear it visibly while I'm working," Matt says. "Foggy expects me to pull my own weight at the office, and there are too many things clients wouldn't trust a slave with. You can't really talk to free people either. They don't *listen*," Matt huffs and he sounds seriously frustrated for a moment, but then he apparently forces himself to relax again and takes a breath. "So, yeah. I wouldn't be much help to Foggy if I didn't pretend."
Karen nods, still slightly overwhelmed - the idea of a *slave* pretending to be a normal person and no one noticing is still a bit too much to compute, because slaves can't DO that, they're simply not *like* free people, right?! - but manages to gather enough of her brain to ask,
"But isn't that illegal?"
At this, Matt actually cracks a smile at her. "You *really* don't have much trust in our prowess as legal council, huh?"
"What? No!" Karen backpedals, feeling embarrassed, but Matt simply shakes his head, grinning a little even as he stows his collar out of sight again, below his shirt.
"To answer your question, no, isn't illegal. In NYC, there's actually no stipulation that collars have to be visible at all times. Of course, most owners are usually insistent that they are, to avoid confusion, but..." he trails off. But not Foggy, is the implied statement, and Karen gets that.
"I still have to tell somebody if somebody asks," Matt continues, putting away his coat and then proceeding to get out what looks like fresh sheets and a pillow from a closet. "Mostly we just do our best to make sure nobody does. And I still have to obey any orders given by free people, which I do. We're actually very careful about staying just this side of the legal line."
"Really. Wow." Karen manages, and then, because she *really* can't stop herself, “So, if I said ‘Make me a coffee’, as long as your owner doesn’t order you to do something else, you’d actually have to…?”
Matt, pausing throwing the sheets from his bed onto his couch, visibly stiffens. “Yes. I’d have to make you a coffee. Though I really would prefer to be asked instead of ordered. Sounds strange and eccentric, I know.”
The last remark is said with a wry twist to the words and a cynic quirk to his mouth, and Karen bites her lip. "I didn't mean..." she starts, then stops herself. "Sorry. I guess I don't know much about life as a slave. My family never had any. You're actually the first one I ever talked to."
(Matt briefly considers telling her 'Really? I'd never have guessed!' at this point, but wisely doesn't.)
"Believe it or not, we're not actually that different from free people," he says instead with a mild smile, and then turns to his kitchen counter. "So. Coffee?"

...aaand yeah, so after that conversation, when Karen is out with him, she'd maybe have assumed that the hiding of the collar has more to do with Matt wanting to appear professional in front of clients, so when they're going out somewhere, maybe fetching lunch while Foggy's back at the office and a friend of Karen's shows up -

“Yeah, he wears it under his shirt, you can just about see the outline if you know it’s there-“ Karen says, and then stops, because all of a sudden it hits her that maybe there’s a *reason* Matt wears the collar in a hidden place, not just at the office, but everywhere.
And that reason suddenly seems to become glaringly obvious.
“Oh my god, he’s gorgeous! Do you keep him as the office pet?” Felicity gasps and at the same time steps forward to run a hand over Matt’s torso and then reach up to ruffle his hair. And Karen can see how he startles at the contact and then seems to have to consciously control himself not to pull away, obviously uncomfortable with being touched.
“Eh, Felicity…”
“My god, his abs are rock-hard! Does he enjoy belly rubs? Do you? Do you?” she asks with a laugh, running her hand up and down Matt’s abdomen, her fingers moving like she’s trying to tickle him.
“Felicity, I don’t think he likes that,” Karen says, because even if she’s only known Matt for a few days, she’s already able to differentiate between his smiles, and the one he’s wearing right now, the thin-lipped, brittle one while he is being groped, is definitely not a genuine one.
“Nonsense,” Felicity waves her off. “Slaves love physical affection, they’re like dogs that way. Right?” She coos at Matt, running a fingertip below his chin. “Take off your shades, boy, I wanna see your pretty eyes.”
His shades. Karen freezes, because Matt almost never takes off his shades if he can help it, the only person she’s ever seen him remove them around has been Foggy, when it was just the two of them in one of their offices and her in the front room. When she asked him about it, Foggy told her that he thinks it was maybe one of Matt’s former ‘asshole owners’ that made him self-conscious about his unfocused gaze – ‘Don’t mind it when he wears them around you. I think it’s his own personal armour, he just needs it to be comfortable. Besides, I helped him pick them, so I take it as a compliment that he likes them so much’ he’d said, sounding faintly proud.
And now Felicity is about to strip them from him.
“No, Felicity, seriously-“
“Oh wow, serious doe eyes going on here! I can see why your boss would want him to keep those hidden, they’re as pretty as the rest of him.” Felicity turns to her, flashing a smitten grin while Matt just stands there, glasses in his hand, looking as awkward and tense as possible while still trying to keep his polite mask from slipping and Karen wants to be swallowed up by the floor. Felicity leans a bit closer. “Can I tell him to kiss me? Or would that be misuse of office material?” she giggles. “Although that’s what you really keep him around for, right?”
“I’m…I’m sorry, we really need to go. We’re already late,” Karen bursts out, at the same time grabbing Matt’s elbow and pulling him away from Felicity, back to her side. “Sorry, Feli, we’ll catch up another time, okay?”
“What? O…kay?” Felicity looks at her, a bit taken aback, eyes darting between her and Matt. “Did I say something wrong?”
Yes, Karen wants to shout, everything! but she doesn’t. Because she knows that about two weeks ago, she likely could have reacted the exact same (well. Maybe minus the kissing request) if a friend of hers had run into her with a seriously cute slave on her arm. She just never realized what it would be like to be that slave.
“No, no, it’s fine, we’re just really in a hurry. See you later!” she manages to force out and then drags Matt away with her as fast she dares go without worrying about making him stumble. They’ve made it almost twenty metres before Matt asks,
“Can we stop for a moment? If it’s alright, I’d like to put my shades back on.”
Karen almost freezes on the spot.
“Yes! Yes, of course, I forgot completely – sure. Yeah. Do that,” she says, releasing his arm again and standing awkwardly next to him while he adjusts his glasses.
“Matt. Matt, I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to – it just slipped out, I didn’t think –“ she takes a few deep breaths and then tries to compose herself again. “So you don’t want anyone to know you’re a slave, no matter whether it’s at the office or on the street, huh?” she asks quietly as they set off again.
“Pretty much,” Matt replies, still sounding tight-lipped and walking slightly stiffly next to her. Neither of them is holding on to the other right now, Matt’s cane tapping his way out in front of him.
“I’m…I’m sorry. I thought you had just forgotten to pull your collar out. I didn’t realize…” she breaks herself off. “That was absolutely awful back there. I had no idea that was going to happen, I’m so, so sorry. I swear Felicity is usually so nice…”
Apparently, even if Matt can’t see on her face how absolutely horrible she feels right now, it also has to be showing in her voice, because he gives a slight huff that sounds more like wry amusement than actual anger at her. “I’ve been enslaved for about ten years now. Being made to take off my glasses is hardly the worst thing that happened to me during that time.”
And Karen feels like she’s taken another punch to the gut.
“Oh god. I didn’t...I never thought about….”
“Most people don’t. It’s easier that way,” Matt shrugs. “If it makes you feel better, nothing much has happened to me in the last five years, at least.”
Not since I’ve been owned by Foggy, is what this translates to, and Karen swallows.
“That’s…good. But still, the way she suddenly stopped treating you like a person-“ Karen breaks herself off and bites her lip. “I’m sorry. I swear I won’t ever tell anyone again. No one should have to go through this.” And, in a smaller voice, she adds, “Please don’t tell Foggy? He’d so fire me.”
Matt raises an eye brow. “You realize you simply have to officially order me to not tell him?”
Karen attempts a small, slightly strained smile. “Nice try. But you’re not gonna catch me doing that again, Mr Murdock. I learned my lesson the last time.”
Matt hmms thoughtfully at that reply. Karen holds her breath, counts the seconds, until…
“Right. In that case…would you mind guiding me again? It does make things easier.”
She lets out a breath of relief. “Sure.” She holds out her arm slightly for him to take. “You lead the way, I’ll make sure you don’t run into things.”
“Sounds like a perfect plan,” Matt replies, and they set off toward the precinct again. Karen tries not to notice the other slaves they pass as they keep walking, human pets on leashes, or trotting behind their owners like dogs, and she wonders whether Matt knows they’re there anyway.
She tugs him a little bit closer to her when they pass the slave markets. She slipped up once today, but she is Karen Page, and that is not going to happen to her again.

and because I'm a horrible person, YES, I want the party to be a DISASTER! XD And I'm also thinking, like, what if it was actually *Marci* to the rescue, for a minute, before the party gets broken up anyway? Like, I'm thinking, what if some drunk guy or girl spills a drink all over Matt's white shirt (who is sitting next to them on the sofa, obviously wishing to be anywhere else, but Foggy wants them to be there, right, so he'll just hold out a little longer) and then of course immediately paws at him with an ineffectual napkin, drunkenly giggling and apologizing - when they find his (now visible) collar and be like 'oh, wow, wait is that a collar?! God, I didn't even notice you're a slave, hahah, can you believe it? Take that shirt off, I want to see the rest of you!' and now are already halfway on top of him on the couch. Matt is basically frozen in panic, having wild flashbacks of his training - 'hold still unless otherwise instructed. Make noises of enthusiasm if the person playing with you does not order you to do otherwise' - and, because with Foggy he has regained most facets of his old life, he also has flashbacks of his *other* training, which would include tossing his attacker halfway across the room. And in between that, he can't do anything but feel his lungs constrict as his shirt is torn open and his chest is bared, and more people notice what is going on, and come over and there's *hands* on him, like sharks at a buffet, and he wants to call over to Foggy, *help me*, but nothing is coming out, and his shades are gone, so he closes his eyes, trying to get himself to *DO* something, anything - when there's another gasp somewhere above the couch, and it' from the only other familiar voice in the room.
"What the...Murdock?!"

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)What about the period after Matt is freed? That would come with its own adjustments and hang-ups and he'd probably catch himself doing thing that he doesn't actually need to do anymore.
Re: Slavery AU; More Ideas HALP/2
(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)Or, maybe it's a habit of his to nervously brush over his hidden collar whenever he was in a situation where he feared to be discovered, and now it's always really strange when it isn't there any more.
Maybe he's also so used to having Foggy accompany him to medical appointments and talk to the doctor over his head (although of course Foggy for the most part was saying the things Matt has asked him to say before they went to the appointment) that it's strange going on his own.
Maybe he'll be at the slave markets for a case later on, and he can feel himself getting nervous because only a few months back, it could have been him in that cage? I dunno, those are the things that mainly come to mind. Can you think of any others? :D
