[FILL] Moths and Flames [5/?] (5/7, maybe?)

(Anonymous) 2015-07-10 07:42 am (UTC)(link)
Foggy really did mean to corner Matt and interrogate him. He planned to start off gently to give him the benefit of the doubt, but he suspected that the interrogation would lead to shouting, feared that it would lead to some crying, and thought it likely that it would lead to harsh words and maybe even slammed doors. But he also hoped that it would lead to a wary reconciliation and cautious rebuilding of trust, and that would ultimately lead to Happily Ever After.

It was just… he couldn’t be mad yet. He didn’t know anything for sure. But he damn well was going to build up anticipation in the meantime.

He spent the day after his talk with… the Devil… practicing a speech and everything. It was a Saturday, so he didn’t even need to make excuses to avoid Matt and Karen at the office. He could stew. He could vent. He could revise the venting into something closer to a mature discussion. He had plans.

Unfortunately, crime waited for no romance.

**

The funny thing was, Foggy wasn’t actually surprised by the kidnapping. He knew he and the Devil had been discreet, but the guy had serious nemeses. Mortal Enemy levels of nemeses. He probably even had an Arch-Nemesis scheming somewhere, and given Foggy’s recently developed suspicions, wasn’t that a terrifying thought?

In any case, he’d already figured that if they’d kept on with their late night liaisons, one of these days, he was bound to get kidnapped. Maybe he’d be knocked around a bit by bored thugs. Maybe he’d be tortured by more experienced goons. Maybe he’d be outright killed. More likely, he’d be used as bait, and while he didn’t want anyone to get hurt for him, at least that meant someone would come looking.

Somehow, it had slipped his mind that as a defense attorney at a law firm that worked on behalf of the little guy, he was perfectly capable of making enemies on his own.

Where’s the file?!” the thug currently whaling on him asked for the ninth time. If Foggy hadn’t been distracted with the boot-shaped bruise forming over his left ribs, the various other bruises and scrapes keeping it company around his person, and a probable concussion, he would have laughed. The dude was as repetitive as a Pokemon.

“Don’t know,” Foggy repeated, also for the ninth time.

It wasn’t even a complete lie. The file in question was a recording of an incriminating telephone conversation between a client and an aggressive research lab—naturally, her former employer—trying to get their hands on her data. As neither Foggy nor the client were idiots, they’d made several backups of the file and hidden them separately from each other before she’d abruptly reported that she was fleeing the state and vanished. He really didn’t know where all of the copies were; hell, he didn’t know if the client was still alive.

He wasn’t going to mention any of that to his assailant, of course. As long as the dude thought he was stupid enough to just keep one copy of the data on a USB stick or something, he wouldn’t kill Foggy.

Probably.

“You’ve got one last chance to answer—” Oh, good, variation! “—before I get out the knives.” … Less good.

“Jesus, I swear, I don’t know!” he yelped before the burly man’s hand closed around his throat and lifted him and the chair he was tied to up several inches. Foggy let out a strangled noise. “Lisa took it with her!”

“Where’s the girl?!”

“I don’t know!” Foggy wheezed, not wanting to lose oxygen but also not wanting to be stabbed. What had his life come to that that was a decision he had to worry about?

Where is she?!

I don’t know! She—she said she was leaving, didn’t—no phone number or anything—no payment, no trails—”

The thug let go. On the plus side, Foggy could breathe again.

On the downside, he and his chair were flung away hard. If Foggy hadn’t had a concussion before, he definitely had one now.

The thug roared. Foggy could hear him stalking away, but he was too busy trying not to throw up to process much more than that. “If your tongue is useless to me, I guess we won’t be needing it, Mr. Nelson.”

The sound of a blade pointedly dragging across a table made Foggy’s gut clench in fear. He was lying on his side with his back to the other man, and he wasn’t sure if the blind anticipation made the dread better or worse. “Oh, god,” he gasped, abruptly deciding that he was not too proud to beg. “Please no—please please please no—”

The door slammed open. The air was immediately full of shouts, thumps, and curses, too quick and chaotic for Foggy to make any sense of. A knife went flying, skittering harmlessly across the floor, and Foggy hoped to whatever higher being was or wasn’t out there that it was the one that’d been meant for him.

Each second felt like forever, but when the fight ended, it ended startlingly quickly. In the span of three heartbeats, someone was crouching in front of him, a gloveless hand reached for his temple, fingers skittering over a cut under his eye, cautiously checking his nose for a break. His laboured breathing came out quick and choppy. “Foggy? Are you awake?” the Devil croaked, rough and strained but still so stupidly deep.

And fake. So fucking fake.

“Really?” Foggy asked weakly, squinting at the blurry figure. “Can we not with the Batman impression right now? It’s been a bad night.”

The fingers on his face stuttered. After a moment, they resumed. “You need a hospital. You’re concussed. You—”

“Fucking shut up, Murdock,” Foggy snapped sharply—or as sharply as he could, given how his head was spinning. “We’ll fight later, okay? Please just take me home.”

To his grim satisfaction, his idiotic best friend’s voice was small and defeated when he softly agreed, “Okay.”

**

They didn’t say much that night.

Matt carefully guided Foggy to his apartment—Matt’s apartment, which really wasn’t what Foggy had meant, but he was too out of it and sore to put up more than a token protest. Once he got Foggy settled into bed, he called someone up before helping Foggy out of most of his clothes and wiping off the dirt, sweat and blood.

(There wasn’t actually much blood, but with the way Matt looked like someone had died every time he found a new open wound, anyone would’ve guessed he’d been swimming in it.)

About forty minutes later, a woman dressed in scrubs showed up. She was polite long enough to introduce herself as Claire before pragmatically getting to work, and after delivering the prognosis that Foggy did have a concussion and two cracked ribs, she instructed him to get some rest and take it easy on his body. To Matt, she ordered him to wake Foggy every two hours to make sure his cognitive functioning didn’t get worse and to shuffle him off to a hospital if it did, but to otherwise leave him alone. Matt luckily wasn’t injured beyond some bruising.

Matt quadruple-checked her instructions and thanked her half a dozen times.

She chided him for not giving a fraction as many damns about his own constant condition, stopped when Foggy started getting worked up, then quietly let herself out.

Despite his exhaustion, Foggy didn’t think he’d be able to sleep with Matt seated by him. He’d given up ordering Matt out after only two tries, and he could sense the worried stare now even with his eyes closed. But as angry as he was for all of the lying and secrets and, oh, back alley sex without saying who he was, what the fuck, Matt was still the presence he saw almost every day, had lived with and slept near for years, and cherished more than any other.

His head was steaming mad, but his heart still saw Matt as comfort, safety, and home.

Foggy was out within minutes.

I have yet to stop making heart-eyes at this fic, seriously.

(Also, it just occurred to me - the events may not completely jive with canon, but this whole story could very possibly explain that stuttering excuse of a lie Matt and Foggy try to give Karen about how they met Daredevil. "Oh, in the - the alley, where we used to - uh.")

*gentle poke* Hi, nonnie! I figured I'd ask - will there be a continuation of this fill? (because it's really good...)

Author!Anon here - There will! There absolutely will be an update! There's only two parts left, really. I just have a deadline for a 20k story coming up in two weeks, so I've had to put all other works-in-progress on hold until then, as nothing on the Kink Meme has an actual deadline. ;) And it will ultimately wind up on AO3 as well once it's complete!

Thanks for checking in! I'm flattered that this is still garnering interest. :D

(Author!Anon here) Whoops! Not intentionally! I just got busy with a fest in another fandom and forgot about this fic!

Author!anon - Still alive! I'm still embroiled in fandom fest season, and I've been out of town for most of December. I have one last deadline to meet, and then slamming through finishing Daredevil fics is my next priority!

Oh, man. Not too late! I just completely forgot! I've been really out of fandom this past year because of a whole mess of real life crap (work, school, housing issues, injury/recovery), but it was really great to see this in my inbox! So glad to hear people are still finding and reading this!

People are definitely still finding and loving this, and wistfully daydreaming about Parts 6 & 7. You've got an excellent fic here, a lovely concept beautifully executed. Well done! *hearts*
