"Hey, Mimi? This is Mark. Yeah, yeah, I know, stop calling me Mimi, but--uh. I just thought I'd let you know, Maureen and I have been talking--not arguing, talking--and. You know that tape Roger had, the one with all the songs he didn't scrap? Maureen thinks some of them would be great in a show, and--well, she's talked me around to writing it. So, uh, would you mind if I wrote something about how we all met? I'll change the names, don't worry about that, I just--wanted to hear your take on it. Thanks."

"Hey, Mark?"

"Mimi! Thank god, I was starting to think you were buried under a pile of paperwork or something."

"How many times am I going to have to tell you, my god, Mark--yeah, I nearly was. Also, I heard your voicemail."

"Oh."

"I think it's a great idea. Look, just--do me a favor?"

"Yeah, sure! What?"

"Don't consult me. I don't--look, it's been a while since Roger--since. God, I can't even say it. I don't think I can handle talking about it, and you were there. I'll go see it on opening night, but other than that, I've got too much on my plate already."

"That sucks, we really could've used your voice, but all right. Uh, how've you been?"

"Fine, Mark. A little tired from all the overtime, but I'm fine."

"This is Mark!" "And Roger!" "Leave a message!"

"You still haven't changed that? Jesus, Mark. Anyway, this is Claire--I. I saw your show. It was really good, it was fantastic, even if I could've done without the on-stage orgy--was that your idea or Maureen's? I think you're on to something. I just--"

A sniff.

"He would've loved it."

"Mimi? You there? This is Mark, Maureen, Joanne and I are okay, we're in Chicago for the National Tour right now--shit, Mimi, are you okay?"

"Mimi--this is Maureen. There are fucking aliens in New York. Goddammit, Mimi, call me."

"Claire, this is Joanne, where are you?"

"Mimi? Mimi, we've been blowing up your voicemail, shit, are you okay? Please be okay."

"Mimi, for fuck's sakes, where are you, we've been trying to reach you for hours now. Call."

"Claire, please, where are you."

"Mimi? This is Mark, where are you?"

"Guys? I'm fine, I just--shit. There were a lot of people in today, and--did you know I saw Captain America? Yeah. Yeah. Shit, I'm okay, I'm at the hospital right now, I just ducked out for a moment--I'm not dead yet, you guys. I don't plan on dying right now. I'll call you back.

And Mark? It's been years, you seriously need to change the recording."

I love that Joanne is the only one who calls her Claire, because she so would, and the others so wouldn't. xD

Ow, hearing Mark's outgoing message for the first time after all these years must be a like a punch in the gut to Claire.

This fic is perfect.

Joanne would, and she'd also help set Claire up with her place and whatever legal help she'd need, and she swings by every time she can bc she gets worried, you know

yes. just. God. Mark hasn't changed it, because it's--it's Roger, it's Roger's voice, it's his friend and he misses him, Claire's got his guitar and his songs and Mark can't bring himself to change the recording because it's Roger's voice on there.

OP has never been happier to have promoted something, because this is the sweetest fic I've ever read. I'm also the anon who spitballed the 'Roger wrote all these songs' thought, and thank you for working it in. Now I'm imagining Foggy humming 'Out Tonight' when Matt's there and he can tell that she's happy, happier than the vague sort you are when you like a song, and Claire doesn't really want to talk about it but it kicks them into Detective Mode and

thank you so much, OP! I'm glad you liked it. I think Mark and Maureen would've done their best to keep true to the songs, preserved them as much as they could working them in, and Roger's name is definitely on the playbill as the lyricist and like, Claire remembers sitting on the couch listening to Roger playing and hearing his songs, and the two of them kidding around about some of them, and when she hears them on stage and sees pretend-herself swinging around on a pole on stage it's like

she remembers Roger strumming the guitar and singing this song at her, remembers laughing because he used some of the things she actually said as lyrics (we don't need any money, I always get it for free for example), and looking back she can't believe how young and playful she was and

("I have never meowed like that," she'd argued once, and Roger had laughed and made a claw and went, "what, like--mrrow"

"you make a terrible feline," she'd laughed)

so like. that song is one of her favorites from the show, from the mixtape. and when she hears Foggy humming it (I've had a knack from way back of breaking the rules once I learn the game) she can't help that smile, even as she's stitching Matt up, and maybe she hums along too the way she sometimes does when she listens to her old mixtape

and Foggy's like, "oh my god, Claire, you know this song??"

and she goes, "uh, yeah, kinda, I, uh. funny story, but no time for that now, Matt, stay still"

(Foggy is now deeply intrigued. and kind of suspicious. and maybe the next time they come over Claire's had a shit day and put on the mixtape (and she totally listened to it after the whole thing with the Russians and with Matt, just popped it in and listened to it three times over) and Foggy recognizes those songs except. they're different? more--raw, stripped down, not edited for stage musicals.

Claire just mentions that she knew the lyricist pretty well. and Matt's definitely heard it playing in the background before, he's been over enough times to have caught some of the lyrics at least and compared them to his friend's bombastic renditions. maybe he figured it out?)
