Maybe Matt is talking to someone and for some reason it comes up in the conversation that the person is (whatever race), and Matt makes an offhand comment like, "Oh, I didn't know you were (blah blah)."

And like, the person is maybe mixed race or mistaken for another race or gets told "You don't LOOK (race*)"; basically they have to deal with ignorant comments all the time and they're just kind of surprised/hurt/angry to hear that kind of thing from their lawyer or something and let him know exactly how fucked up it was for him to say something like that.

Because the only alternative I can come up with would be for him to say "You don't SOUND (race)," and that would actually be racist. So.

*My Jewish friend got told she didn't look Jewish all the time, so maybe the person he's talking to can be a Jew (ethnically, not just religiously).

Sorry, now I can't get the image of Toby Ziegler being one of Matt and Foggy's lecturers at Columbia out of my head. aaah yes, casual/accidental anti-semitism would not go over well in Dr Ziegler's class, oh no no no.

OR

Let's say the person is Asian, or Black. Like, no questions when you look at them you know they're Asian or Black. So then Matt says "oh I didn't know you were black/asian" and the person he's talking to doesn't realize he's blind and is like: ..... wtf? Stupid white person.

yep, i can attest to that being A Thing. either you get told you don't look jewish OR you get told some variation of "AHA! I KNEW IT" which is. kind of also pretty bad.
