I read a fic once where Matt and Foggy woke up with their minds linked so they could see through each other's eyes. I adored it, but I would like something a little sideways of that.

Whether it's by magic or crazy science or an alien artifact, something happens to either Matt or Foggy (but lbr, it probably happened to Matt) that unanchors his brain: he's projecting his thoughts or senses, or absorbing too much of everyone else's. It can be fixed, but it needs an anchor - somewhere for his brain waves to be directed to so they're not just exploding everywhere. The downside: he and this anchor would be mentally linked. Permanently. Not seeing through each other's senses, necessarily (although you could go that route), but hearing each other's thoughts. (Conscious and subconscious? One better than the other, probably? Able to tap into each other's memories? Maybe, maybe not?)

Being a martyr, Matt is willing to curl up and die rather than inflict his angst and guilt on anyone forever, especially since nobody knows what would happen if one of them died. Of course Foggy comes and knocks him upside the head for being a complete FOOL, you stupid ass, how could you ever think I'd let you die, you promised me no more secrets and we've already lived together and we are fucking wiring our brains together if it's the last thing we do, so help me God?!"

Romantic, ace romantic, ace aro, queerplatonic, whatever. \o/ In my ideal world it would be shippy because I'm a sucker and a sap, but any world in which they choose each other over anyone else makes me happy.

Bonuses in no particular order
• Matt's been in love with Foggy for years, because I can never get enough of pining!Matt
• The feelings are reciprocated
• The indignant protectiveness going both ways - Foggy would, of course, worry over Matt's thoughts and guilt and injuries, but Matt discovers things that have been bothering or upsetting Foggy and fusses back
• A good deal of focus on the various ways their lives change - and the various ways they DON'T change, because they already know each other damn well (like Foggy narrates actions for Matt, but maybe he starts automatically mentally transmitting images as well as the narration)

I'm also majorly tempted to write this fic because I'm such a sucker for shenanigans involving mental linking and such. It would be unrelated because different but man I am tempted...

Now obviously you're right. Matt would be more likely to be the affected person but can we appreciate the angst potential of Foggy being the one hit? Because Matt really doesn't wish his life on anybody but Foggy is just suffering from what is essentially telepathy/empathy on the scope of Matt's senses and if they don't do something quick he'll go insane (plus Foggy has other friends but how many of those would be willing to sacrifice having a normal life for him?)

I have absolutely NO COMPLAINTS ABOUT THAT IDEA AT ALL, I love torturing Foggy just as much as Matt (although on the plus side Foggy can go "HA! Try to keep secrets from me NOW, asshole! I KNOW ALL OF YOUR BRUISES")

And I mean, yeah, Foggy probably wouldn't wish a forced telepathic link to him on any of his friends just because of how invasive the lack of privacy would be, so I can't really see him going for it with anyone but Matt anyway even if other friends offered

Tempted!Anon here, with a beginning for a fill. I leave in like, 12 hours so I hope this can hold you over until then. While I am going with the original idea, I hope someone does swap my choices around. I'd love to see it!

Foggy would be mad. Foggy should be mad. He should be screaming and ranting and making Matt suffer for the lies he's been telling this last week. Foggy should be so many things right now.

But instead he's helplessly watching his friend - his best friend - lose his mind, fully aware it's his fault.

'Not-' Matt manages to get out before he groans and whimpers, lost under the flood of information. Of thoughts, from everyone in the gleaming Avenger's Tower while nervous scientists scurry around him.

'It is.' Foggy whispers, unsure of if it registers to Matt. 'It was supposed to me that got hit-'

'Teach. Lesson. Me.' Matt curls up suddenly, throwing his hands over his ears as if that will help block out everything.

Judging by the look on his face, it does not. Foggy reaches out to offer comfort, remembers exactly what happened when he'd done that to Matt moments after he was hit and slowly drops his hand.

He really wishes this had hit him. Sure Matt had pissed off some arsehole from Hyrda with access to alien tech and kept it, and the arsehole's threats from Foggy. From Foggy, who might have been more careful and understanding if he'd known someone was gunning for him.

Instead he'd walked into a trap and Matt - because it was Matt, dressed in his favourite hoodie and hastily done up boots - had back flipped into it just in time to take the 'shot' meant for Foggy.

And promptly begun to lose his mind.

'Mr Nelson?' Bruce Banner, and Foggy would be more awed if Matt wasn't slowly losing his self under the weight of the minds of hundreds of people. Going to the Avengers for help had been the act of a desperate man and Foggy is hoping it pays off.

But he's getting the feeling it might not. He nods. 'It's getting worse, isn't it?'

Banner nods with a sad sigh. 'The ah, range? It's expanding and rapidly. Tony is working on deconstructing the technology but honestly? I don't think even he could reverse engineer something this complicated before your friend ah...' He bites his lip. 'Before the physical effect this is having becomes more overwhelming than Mr Murdock's body can handle.'

'He's dying,' the Black Widow - Natasha Romonov wasn't it? - sums up. 'At an ever increasing rate.

Something is wrong with Foggy's knees. They've stopped holding weight. 'But... but you guys can do something, right? You're the Avengers!'

'Fo-Foggy-' Matt whimpers on the bed behind him.

Banner looks down. 'We can't fix this. But. But Thor, Thor thinks there might be a solution that while not removing the problem completely will alleviate the symptoms such that it will act as a practical solution.'

Foggy's mind isn't working well enough to understand that. 'What?'

'We can fix it. It's not a complete solution but it will stop your friend dying.' Natasha shrugs at Foggy's look. 'Summing up technical babble is a hobby.'

'Then do it! What are you waiting for?'

Banner shakes his head. 'The solution Thor has is to anchor Mr Murdock's mind to another; to use that mind to drown out everyone else's. It's a permanent, unbreakable link; a lifetime of shared thoughts. We don't know the effects of something like this on humans, Thor's only seen it done to Asgardians. We don't know what it will do to whoever volunteers... if anyone would.'

'No.' Matt's voice is surprisingly solid. 'No, no, no, no, no. I refuse.'

Foggy blinks. 'But it will save you!' he cries as he turns to face Matt. 'Why not?'

'Not- No- Not- doing this- me- to -anyone I- carelove.' Matt grimaces, the most pain Foggy has ever seen expressed on his friend's face. 'Not-'

Something in Foggy breaks. He steels himself and whacks Matt lightly on the head. For a moment, his face clears and Foggy knows what he has to do. 'You idiot. Like I'm going to let you die.' He turns to Banner. 'I'm volunteering.'

Banner doesn't look surprised. 'You do know this is risky, we don't know what will happen?' Foggy nods and Banner slowly joins in. 'I thought so. I'll get Thor to set up.'

'Foggy, no-' Matt's voice is broken but audible. Foggy turns back to his friend.

'We lived together for ages, this can't be much different,' he jokes before getting serious and leaning in. 'I can't let you die. No matter how much of a lying arse you are, I can't let you lie. We're doing this, so help me God.'

Foggy is doing this. Oh God.

Haha yes! Though he kept Daredevil a secret (for the moment) so even Foggy has limits of what he'll do- betraying Matt's trust to save his life for one.

I have NO idea if I've got this formatting so this makes sense. I'm trying to convey some things that don't really convert to words. I hope it works. For reference, bold is Foggy, italics is Matt. I really do hope this makes sense.

Matt panics.

Matt's thoughts are bombarding him and it's so hard to focus, to realise that he is Foggy not Matt. Because it's not just words. There's another level to the words; a heartbeat and a smell of coconut/donut/cheese and the feeling of running his hands over a face and tie pin with an 'F' and then the sense of these being ripped away in copper and pain and this horrific smell and silence that Foggy realises is death.

And holy shit that's how Matt perceives the world. What the hell.

Hence the panicking.

Matt, no, Matt. You're safe, besafe I need yousafe. Friendlovebestfriendworried. Matt.

It's a feedback loop of HOLY SHIT and KEEP YOU SAFE that's just, impossible to break out of.

Until Matt, God bless Matt, figures out his panic is causing Foggy pain.

Foggy, Foggy stop. Breathe with me. Under his words is the sense of in and out, a memory that is - quietpeaceStickhelpjerkhelpful - calm and relaxing. Just feeling the memory calms Foggy somewhat.

Thank you. Foggy opens his eyes, and it only then dawns on him that he'd had them closed. Matt is sitting up in his bed, colour in his cheeks and a light in his unseeing eyes that had been fading fast before Foggy had agreed to this. He's sitting up and clearly capable of functioning. Noregret.

Matt's eyes narrow. 'Foggy-'

'Oh hey, you two are ali-and that's creepy.' Tony Stark is staring when Foggy turns to look at him and it occurs to him a moment later that Matt must have turned at the same moment. In unison. Matt confirms and Foggy smirks. This could be cool.

Not worth risking your life over! Oh hey, Matt sounds mad but Tony Stark is talking and Foggy's trying to split his focus but Matt is like a beacon that he can't turn away from and he can hear/feel/know that Matt is feeling the same thing-

'-and you guys aren't listening. Hey!'

Again both Matt and Foggy snap their heads to look at Stark. Only this time Foggy focuses and yup, he can feel Matt's head turning in time with his. Okay, definitely cool. Matt frowns, Foggy can feel it but he can also kinda feel Matt's reluctant ...is that delight?

'How are you feeling?' Bruce Banner gently pushes the still talking Stark out of the way and approaches Matt.

Who tenses. WRONG. Foggy can feel/know/see how every thought/feeling/inch of Matt's is screaming that there is something WRONG with Banner.

Matt?

Who is this?

Banner stops, picking up on Matt's anxiousness. Bruce Banner-OH. You can- Foggy struggles to phrase it and just sort of pushes the sense of Hulk/green/fear/anger/monster/Avenger/helpedyou at Matt. It's more than he means to send but the wariness in Matt fades away.

FoggythinkssafetrustFoggy comes back and Foggy realises a moment later Matt didn't mean for him to feel that. Both he and Matt flinch.

'You okay?' Banner is still two steps away from the bed.

'F-fine,' Foggy manages, using his voice for the first time since everything. It surprises him with how normal it sounds. 'You just. Surprised Matt. He, ah, didn't hear you coming.'

Amusement/badliar/insidejoke comes from Matt and Foggy sends it back in a heartbeat. Matt smiles - smiles! - and Foggy's heart rises. This won't be so bad.

Matt tries to bury his guilt at Foggy's thought but it's hard. Foggy is everywhere in his head, like a comforting blanket that drowns out everything.

He can't believe he's let his friend basically risk killing himself just so Matt could think a little clearer-

But Foggy of course, isn't having any of it. Hey, no. You were dying Mattsickpainohgodhelp and I did what I had to. No guilt. He pushes friend/mine/safe/pleasebehappy at Matt and Matt finds the smile of a moment ago returning.

I'll try. Matt turns his focus to Banner, who finally starts to move towards him again.

'Sorry Mr Murdock-'

'Matt.' Like Foggy, he's surprised at how even his voice is. Should be effected. There's an image - an image of an unfamiliar dark haired man - one Matt has been 'seeing' constantly since this began - who is healthyhappynotdead and no blood with relief but confusion that a voice - familiar, familiar but not - isn't mingled in.

It dawns on Matt that the dark haired man is him and that the voice is how he sounds to Foggy.

Oh man, forgot that you don't know you. Images, so many images of Matt flash through his mind. HappyMatt/SadMatt/DuckMatt/DrunkMatt/DyingMatt MattMattMattMattMatt. Matt can't process them, can't link the moments to his memories but that's okay, he has time he can just look and see his face and DadDadDadDadDad/love/mine/gone/DadDadDadDad oh God, he looks like his Dad. He can feel/know that Foggy is seeing/feeling/hearing/smelling/living his memories of Dad in return but it's a small thing to share in return for this.

'Matt?' Foggy stops sending the images and Matt near whimpers at their loss. He wants to see his Dad in him so much.

But Banner is still calling his name. 'Matt!'

'S-Sorry. It's.' Matt closes his eyes, aware it does nothing but act as a signal to sighted people. 'It's overwhelming. But in a better way than before.'

A woman approaches and this time Matt can track her heartbeat, her shoes and her perfume. Black Widow. Foggy sends a flash of red/black/deadly/fear/hot with his thoughts that's probably accidental.

'Feeling more human?' Romonov asks and Matt can hear the careful touch of leer in her voice. Flirting but heart rate isn't up. Interrogation.

Foggy's heart rate picks up. Fear/badliar/dontknowwhattodo. Matt realises that was deliberate. Already they're getting a handle on this.

Calm/canhandle/Daredevil/shownofear. 'I can think again.' Matt shrugs. 'Well, more than I could before. We'll adjust.' We will. Confidence/surety/candoanythingwithFoggybesideme.

Okay maybe not so much a handle on things. The flashes of emotion/memory/images are harder to control than the thoughts.

'We have some tests to run,' Banner cuts in. 'Before we figure out what happens next.'

Fear/worry/testsubject flashes through Matt and is reflected in Foggy a moment later. 'We're not going to be your test subjects,' They say together.

Banner sounds pained. 'I would never- Could never- No. I just want to make sure you're, ah, healthy.'

He's telling the truth. Trustme/heartbeat/nosweat

I know. TrustMatt/Bannerlookingupset/trustMatt. Then a flash of an image of Fogwell's gym runs through Matt's mind followed by a street at night with him on it. Trust/betrayal/trust/friend runs through the images and makes Matt's heart ache.

What?

Later. Tests now.

'Okay. We'll cooperate,' Matt says. 'Please don't make us regret this.'

'I promise, you'll always be free,' Banner says, no lie in his voice or heart.

Matt and Foggy believe him. 'Where do we start?'

I love how you have the blurring together of words/thoughts/feelings interspersing normal conversational sentence structure in their thoughts for the points that evoke stronger feelings in one of them! All of the friend/mine/love stuff is making me swooooon. <3

Foggy is really understating things. If he didn't, he'd be panicking. More. He does! Though it'll take Foggy a while to adjust.

I love freak out loops. Because it's totally what would happen. I feel you panic which makes me panic and you feel me panicking over you which makes you panic more and it's a complete disaster and a lot of fun to write.

They hit an issue with the tests nearly straight away.

Banner only wants to put on an ECG machine like the one on Foggy's chest - they'd tried to do it earlier when Matt had first come in but anyone other than Foggy getting close to him had only made his symptoms worse so it had been skipped- but Matt has just shut down. Foggy is halfway through his own physical and not at all sympathetic.

Why the shyness? Hot/embarrassed/friendoutoflimits/hot. You've nothing to worry about. Trust me. Foggy winces internally at how much of his feelings about Matt slip through but at least he keeps the fantasies to himself. Beside him the lovely Doctor Cho finishes her work. Hopefully.

Yup, they think Matt is shy and too embarrassed to admit it.

Shit. Foggy pulls in what he can of his emotions but Matt's guilt rises so it's really not working. At least his friend bestfriendloveMatt is able to see the logic in waiting to talk this out.

'How about if Natasha and Tony leave? Will that help? If it's just me and Dr Banner?' Dr Cho asks, her voice gentle. 'We really need those readings, if only for monitoring your later health.'

Foggy? Matt passes over sensations; her heartbeat, her scent - which is weird but Foggy will deal - chemical/rose/disinfectant and the steadiness of her breathing. Matt believes her.

Foggy eyes up the doctor, sending his own visions of her to Matt. Your choice buddy.

Trust. 'Okay. Okay. That... that will be okay.'

Romonov raises an eyebrow but leaves instantly with a smirk. Stark, on the other hand, pouts. 'Okay, kicking out the guy who owns the place? Not cool.'

'You're not a doctor, Mr Stark,' Foggy says coldly. 'You have no right, no legal right, to be here no matter what you own.'

Stark shivers. 'Lawyers. You make my skin crawl.'

'We live to serve.' Matt smirks and Stark moves to the door. He pauses by a bench.

'Sorry, but-' in a quick movement he picks up something that Foggy can't make out and throws it at Matt, '-I have to know'.

Worry/warning/whatifitsheavy/Stark! Matt friendshitsecrethurt look out!

Matt catches it, automatically turning his head in the direction of Stark. Foggy realises he both heard it coming but also saw it through Foggy's eyes. They recognise the item together. A stress ball.

Anger/testsubject/liar. How DARE he! There's the taste of copper and Foggy's coconut/donut/cheese smell mingling with it. Yeah, Foggy's feeling much the same. What if it had been dangerous and Matt hadn't caught it?

Anger/testsubject/leave Foggy agrees. He ignores Matt's fears of him being hit - there's nothing to test in throwing something at him.

'TONY,' Banner roars and there's something green in the tinge of his skin. Stark's eyes widen and he flees. Cho takes two steps back and Foggy shifts closer to Matt.

'Dr Banner?' Cho is scared and shit, now Foggy is. I've got you. Protect. Matt clutches at Foggy's arm, as if Foggy is about to lead him but Foggy can feel the tension in his grip. He's preparing to fight.

Banner takes a dozen deep breaths and the green fades. Matt's grip doesn't loosen for another few moments - until Banner's heart beat calms, which Matt makes a point of sending to Foggy. Nice of him.

'Sorry.' With a soft smile, Banner turns back to them. 'I only meant to scare Tony. He deserves it.' There's venom in his voice but it disappears in his next sentence. 'If you want to leave now, I'll understand. I do not want to hold anyone here against their will.'

Truth. They declare. 'We'll stay,' They say aloud.

'Just for the tests,' Matt adds and releases Foggy. 'We're leaving after that. We need time and space to figure this out and I do not want to do it in Tony Stark's tower.'

'I understand.'

Matt rolls his eyes and he hears Dr Cho laugh. 'Care to share your top secret conversations?' she jokes. 'Or are they too top secret?' Matt pauses, unsure of what to say but aware he might owe something to the people that helped Foggy save him.

But then Foggy replies, despite having moved away with Dr Banner and appearing to be out of earshot. 'Totally top secret! Completely and utterly secret. Matt you say one word-' I'm going to totally not manage to kick your ninja arse but I will TRY and that's all that matters.

He can't help it. Matt laughs. 'Sorry, seems like my lips are sealed.' Cho laughs again but it's definitely slightly forced. Matt listens. Ah. Nervous. We're making her nervous.

All the more reason to leave. Now.
