I'm thinking of doing a kinkmeme etiquette and handling essay because it has occurred to me that a lot of our rules about kinkmeme behavior go unspoken, across kinkmemes and that this can be really confusing for newbies to these spaces. (And that it is just asking for wank when these new players assume shit about the rules.)
So I was wondering if any of our kinkmeme vets would like to help out with this or think it's a good idea? Right now I'm just in the vague planning stages as there's so much else going on in my life right now (including 20 or so things I want to fill!). But I figure there's no harm in asking, right?
Also, I'm asking here because it's such an active kinkmeme and one of my favorites. I also think it has the least wank and best moderation which means to me that the people here might be able to offer a lot of insight into why it is they way it is and similar.
Sounds a bit like micro-managing, tbh. If you've got a specific issue you think needs to be addressed, maybe contact the mod? Otherwise why mess with a good thing?
One of the many things that I LIKE about this kinkmeme is that there isn't a shit-ton of rules, and we're all trusted to be adult-ish and use common sense and have a good time.
I don't think that the OP anon is trying to suggest that they have issues with behaviour they want changed, or that their essay would be rules that /need/ to be followed.
I mean I interpreted this as just being an attempt to analyse and explain general kinkmeme community behaviours. particularly those that may be unfamiliar to newbies. Like those posts that go into fandom history and explain why people use the exclamation marks to denote AUs/characteristics and what not.
Behaviour patterns that the community adopts as a whole unconsciously that are interesting to explore rather than rules and regulations.
Specifically, there's another kinkmeme that I shall not name here that's having a lot a lot of problems with the unspoken rules part of the kinkmeme. For example, there have been anons jumping down people's throats for "plugging" when they fill a prompt but that fill then spirals into a much larger story than originally asked for by the prompter.
That's a problem you'd never see here. Or that the mods would screen almost as soon as it happened. Yet it's a problem running rampant over there.
However, I don't feel comfortable being sole writer of this thing because I really am coming form the perspective of "Oh my god, look at this mess." and I don't want to spend 3/4 of my time writing and editing it second guessing myself and whether or not I'm actually acting in good faith or whether I'm just being an ass and contributing to the major problems of negativity this other place as got going on.
And also, I think establishing more guilde lines is better. Like if I read a fic where x happens and I want to prompt a fic where x also happens there is no guilde line for if I should link to of even mention the existence of fic x and I think this is something that should be talked about.
I mean this happened with one of my fics which turned out to be really cool. I mean I wasn't cited at all but in the comments I brought up my fic and it was cool to have OP say, "Oh yeah! That was great! And it's where I got the idea from."
But if I wrote a fic for this fandom in question and this happened on that kinkmeme... I would be livid because it's such a hostile place right now. It's also why I'm just not writing for this fandom period.
But yeah. This is all for the benefit of that first anon to explain that I have 0 problems with the daredevil kinkmeme. I think it's easily one of the best kinkmeme's I've been on in a long time.
But I know that with kinkmemes becoming more and more common there will be more and more of them that fall apart like this other one I'm not mentioning is.
And I don't know if I'm dragging up wank or something. This is just a huge problem and me and my little group of friends don't know how to handle it. So I guess I'm also looking for a reality check. That's the deal.
I'd love it if people like the anon above could help me with this. Because while I'm inspired by the utter mess going on in other fandom spaces I also think that everything they brought up is important to focus on because I think it's way more important than the perspective I'm taking. But I'm having a really hard time with this bais I've got.
I also think that there are a lot fans who don't know how kinkmemes work to begine with. Like the daredevil kinkmeme explains it really well and so does Avengerkink but if you start anywhere else there's not going to be an explanation of the off-topic post or even the fill anoucenemnt post.
Yeah, it's easy for me to forget that because I hang out almost exclusively on kinkmemes for fic purposes these days, but a lot of it just isn't intuitive, you know?
I should also add that I am now 3,000 words into this so my attitude and perspective towards it is very different from when I made my original post. Because there is so much to explain to newbie who's never seen a kinkmeme before even outside of the other issues.
Hey! I'm the ~micro-managing~ anon. I understand a bit better what you were getting at now, thanks! :-)
Honestly, I think it really boils down to good moderators on this meme. They don't tolerate wank.
Also, the rules here are simple and straightforward, and therefore easy to follow (I've seen some memes that get bogged down with silly rules like no discussions in the prompt post, or no comments like "seconded!" or "no discussions about this other iteration of the thing" (like, comics, or another movie) and it all seems very nit-picky and not fun at all).
... I don't know how this helps for what you want to write tho. It seems to all boil down to Be Nice and Have Fun, haha ^^;
(Also, our fandom and this meme is but a tiny thing compared to other fandoms. I think you'd need an army of mods to keep a kinkmeme in the Avengers fandom, or the Sherlock fandom from devolving into a cesspool)
But there are things like: Our kinkmeme doesn't say if recs are okay. I mean, I assume they are.
It doesn't say if blending multiple prompts together to create a fill is okay.
So forth. I'm interested to know if other people agree with me on this. Why I assume these rules are in play unless otherwise stated and why other people might not. And part of what my thinking about this issue has lead me to is this rather in-depth analyzes for how both these things add to the kinkmeme. You know?
I personally love that this kinkmeme is so open and assumes that we're all capable of policing ourselves, but also so well moderated.
It's fantastic that the mods seem to be so open to things like comic or other divergent conversations and prompts and are so fair to everyone. From what I've seen, other kinkmemes get too bogged down in specific lists of rules, or have mods who are either too loose and don't stay on top of things, or who shut things down too quickly and are too strict for fear of any wank at all.
I like that this "kink" meme has become a catch-all place for Daredevil fics of all kinds (AU, gen, kinky, etc.) and that it polices itself for the most part without anyone really telling anyone off too much. When wank has occurred, the mods have been very responsive amd assertive, but they've also considered complaints and decided not to screen or freeze in cases where the conversation has actually been necessaey or interesting. I appreciate that.
DAYRT - I actually really like this idea, and I'm saying that as a relative newbie to actually participating in a kinkmeme. I'm one of those Gen people who usually don't find what they're looking for in a kinkmeme. But like another anon says, the wonderful thing about this one is that it's open to any kind of fic, and not just the "kinky" stuff -- in the strict sense of the word.
When I first started posting, I was really hesitant, because I constantly had the paranoid feeling that I was going to do something wrong, and would then be told off about it -- anon posting or not. Also took me a long time to figure out the acronyms like SAYRT, DAYRT etc. I would have loved to have some more specific guidance on how this thing is supposed to work.
For me, it was all basically trial and error, and looking at what other people were doing. Sometimes I still forget that you're supposed to put "Fill" in the subject line when you post one.
So, yes, I'm all for this project. That said, I'm not a kinkmeme vet, so I don't know how much input I could personally give.
And I can also co-sign that this is one of the happiest fandom places I've been in, and I hope that never changes. People are very tolerant and mindful of each other. There's lots of encouraging feedback when you post a fill, and I also love that people are open to collaborating, e.g. when you want to play in the same sandbox as a fic universe someone else created.
I can honestly say that I've never written this much fic in such a short period of time in *any* fandom, and I wanna squish you all into a big group hug! :-D
OP: Yes. And I got called out A LOT as a kinkmeme noobie. Mostly in terms of my amerancism when writing for British shows and for my misspellings and getting upset and being triggered before trigger warnings were widely used.
I left kinkmemes because of this. And the thing about this negativity spiral is if too many people leave because of it the kinkmeme dies.
I think that's what is so amazingly special here. I bet someone could really obnoxiously plug a fic or an author every day all day and what would happen is someone would bring it up to the mods and ask them to handle it and almost everyone else wouldn't give a fuck. I think that's the best thing kinkmeme's can ever have going for them. And it's what helping out this other kinkmeme I am so invested in because I am so invested in the source matterail so damn hard.
But since I've already got a first draft of the 101 what the acyonms mean and how kinkmeme's are organized, would people like to see it?
This place is so friendly (and anonymous) that people seem to be just generally nice to n00bs like me. I think that might be the secret of this meme's success.
SAYRT - Yes, sure, I'd like to see your draft. If you want to e-mail it to me, feel free to send it over at mail@virtual-dreams.org. I can give some input if you want.
I actually don't have it in an easy to email format. (It's in my tumblr draft.) And since this is threaded out of view of the main thing I think I'd rather just post it here so I don't have to reformat it on scrivener and the export it as a word document and then email that.
I'd really like to know if there's anything you think I should add or what you'd change.
Authors note: kinkmeme’s are a thing I have been aware of since the start of my fannish career around two or three years ago now. My level of involvement has fluctuated quite a bit. I left some because they didn’t post prompts that inspired me, I left others because of wank or rude comments over my spelling. It happens. But a few months ago, after a very long dry spell, I jumped into the daredevil kinkmeme and haven’t been the same since. The level of involvement I’m at now, writing 20 or so fics in 3 months, was always something I knew was possible, but had always fallen short of in the past.
And it has come to my attention, that not all fans are familiar with them or their largely unspoken etiquette. Or how to deal with a fandom space where so many of it’s rules go unposted. So, I’m here, for those fans who are too shy and timid to enter into this Brave New World and contribute to these spaces, the amazing energy, and community they have the potential to create. I’m writing this post for because I know that there isn’t really a similar resource out there. Even reading the fanlore wiki on the subject would leave a new member to flounder in the deep end when it comes to joining one of these increasingly ubiquitous fanspaces.
So, I’m here to bridge that gab, to reach out a hand to fans who might never have heard of, or were to intimidated to join, a kinkmeme in the past.
One quick thing to get out of the way: If you want to read about the history or a general overview of what a kinkmemes is go here http://fanlore.org/wiki/Kinkmeme because that’s the part fanlore covers really well, and I’m not sure how much of it I’m going to be hashing out here.

The 5+1 of Kinkmeme Activity
There are five or six types of activity that go on here - Prompting, Seconding, Discussing, Rec-ing, Filling, and Lurking.
Prompting - Creating a new comment (on the specified post following the instructions about how to format the header explained above the comment section of designated post) to request a thing. Usually the request is for fanfic but it can also be specifically for art, fanvids, gifs, song mixes, even poetry. Though this is rare. So rare that a request tends do default to fanfic and no one specifies it. This does leave it up to interpretation though, and fans with expertise in other medium may still fill it. Which is great for the creativity of the meme as it allows all fans to participate and to do some really innovative things with the prompts that inspire them.
Seconding - Any comment in response to a prompt along the lines of “I would like this as well”. The most common form is to say “+1”s. But something like “Pitches tent, starts camp fire” implying that the commenter is now following the thread, hoping something gets posted, counts as well.
Discussing - Can be A LOT of things. It can be a simple sentence or two expanding on the original prompt, say, theorizing on a character’s motivation for doing the thing being requesting. But it can also be whole meta or even essays. The best ones tend to be a back and forth with at least with two people and sometimes just the anon writing the meta and someone egging them on. I’d basically classify it as anything that’s not a seconding, not a rec, and not fill.
Rec-ing (short for recommending) is a response to a prompt that says, “This isn’t a new piece made in response to the prompt but it fulfills it. Just in case you haven’t seen it before.” Sometimes the actual comment is just a link. Rec-ing is important for kinkmemes because not every prompt is going to get filled. And certainly not in a timely manor. It helps even out the prompts to fills ratio which is important to the environment of any kinkmeme. It’s also really cool to have interactions that go “Anon 1: I don’t know if you’ve read X but it fulfills the prompt here’s a link. Anon 2: Actually, I have read it. It’s where I got the inspiration for the prompt because I really want to see more!”
Also note for that example, that some kinkmemes may require you link to any inspirational material for a prompt. Either so all those people seconding can read it if they haven’t all ready, or so that if the OP of that material comes along they don’t feel like they’re being cheated form their ideas, and instead are being given the accreditation they deserve.
Filling - writing or in other ways creating something that fulfills the request of a post specifically for that post.
Fills are noted to the kinkmeme by changing the “RE:” when replying to something along the lines of “FILL” or “MINI FILL” (for fics a little more than say, 50 words, but less than about 750). There’s also “ART FILL” and so on. This lets anyone who’s not “stalking the thread” (checking up on that specific comment thread every once and a while) and is instead scrolling down the page skimming the titles, or even getting a notification in an inbox that someone has created something for the kinkmeme! Yay!
Lurking - kind of a non activity. It’s reading the kinkmeme. It’s checking up on it every once and a while but not doing anything else. It may seem a little weird to put it here but I want to affirm that this is a common and valid way of interacting with a kinkmeme, whether it be just the prompt post or the entire thing.
And lurking can still contribute to fandom. Such as if a lurker gets inspired by some of that discussion I mentioned and creates something not related to the original prompt but to that piece of meta. Or if the lurker creates a rec list. Or follows a link to AO3 and causes that hit count to go up by one. Their presence isn’t really felt, except through ripples. But that’s totally fine, and I love lurkers, and think most kinkmemes do, even if they will only ever lurk. :)
Anatomy of a Kinkmeme
1.) Prompt Post(s)
On active kinkmemes there will always* be one “open” prompt post that is accepting new prompt postings. There may also be older, “closed” prompt posts that are not accepting new prompts, but will still have active discussions or fills being posted. This is because the journals kinkmemes are hosted on have a comment limit (usually of 10,000) and the community wants to keep older prompt posts from reaching this limit. So they close the creating of new prompts so that the old prompts can keep getting commented on and filled without having to worry about preventing any posting of any type in the future. This means that the kinkmeme, including it’s very old prompts and prompt posts can stay open and receive fills for years. And if a kinkmeme is still active that far into the future, prompts that old will get filled.
*I put and asterisk here because it is also some what common practice to “freeze” a kinkmeme and disallow any new prompt posting. Usually a freeze lasts for a week or less. It is a time to signal boost old and unfilled posts as well as for kinkmeme participants to collectively take a deep breath and focus exclusively on fills.
The open prompt post is the most active part of a kinkmeme.
2.) Discussion Post
While prompts on the prompt post may inspire discussion they are meant specifically to inspire fills. The discussion post is the place that’s meant just for discussions. Or, in some kinkmemes, casual conversations and requests for people who have lost a prompt they wanted to fill and want help finding it.
One might find a thread sharing theories about a character’s back story or theorizing about the Noodle Incident. On some kinkmeme’s you might find “revel” posts, where the anonymous commenters reveal who they are on other platforms so that they can make friends.
Not everything is far game on all discussion posts but it does tend to be a more relaxed, slower moving space. Most people in the kinkmeme may never read the discussion post or even be aware it’s there.
3.) The Mod Post
This is where you ask the mod questions or bring concerns to their attention.
The three common types of posting here are 1.) Someone asking that a post be deleted because they formatted it wrong, it posted in the wrong section, or it posted in the middle of them typing it out. 2.) Someone bringing a wanky thread or a thread threatening to turn wanky to the mods attention so it can be screened, frozen, or deleted as appropriate. 3.) Someone asking the mod a question, such as clarification on a rule or asking for permission to start up a chat room or some other cool thing for the meme.
It also tends to be where discussion about what to do with a kinkmeme if the mod or mod team has left occurs.
4.) Announcement Post for Fills
And this is where we start to tread into “not all kinkmeme’s” territory. It’s only going to be the very small, very slow kinkmeme’s that don’t have such a post set up.
But most kinkmeme’s will have this upon start up, if just to save the work of creating one later. It can also be broken down into Announcement for Completed Fills and Announcement for WIPs (works in progress). It’s fairly common for larger and fast acting kinkmeme’s to do this. It’s a matter of size and finding the right pacing. Splitting a kinkmeme off like this two early can lose hype but keeping WIPs and Fills together in an announcement fill can clog that fill with all the parts to WIPs that should be posted as a single link on a finished fills thread.
The formatting for how to announce your fill will be listed on this page as well. Also check the rules to see how Highly Encouraged writers are to announce fills. Since announcing fills provides visibility and increase hype for the kinkmeme it is always a good idea.
5.) Extra! Extra!
AO3 Collection - This is a collection on AO3 for people who post fills there. It’s like the fill announcement post but hosted on a different site for anyone who either posts a link their fill on AO3 or cross posts (posting the whole store and a link). It’s like a fills post but more specialized and site specific. It’s also more useful as AO3 lets you sort by character or pairing, tags or warnings and it makes it easier to find something to read then just skimming the fill posts.
Delicious and Pinboard - Are sites that will allow you to search prompts to find ones you are looking for based on tags or sometimes just searching words. This is Big Kinkmeme Business as you have to have enough prompts to make skimming them, or going to the discussions page and asking if anyone has seen the one you are looking for, unrealistic, or a user base that is active enough that the kinkmeme is going to get there in the near future.
Fill / Fic Exchange - This is in no way kinkmeme specific or even all that common for kinkmemes but some will have these going. For those who don’t know, it’s a set up where you agree to write about a, b, or c and in exchange someone will write something for your requests x, y, and z. It’s a much more strict event because it requires a good number or participants and the fills to prompts ratio must be 1:1 instead of the normal kinkmeme free for all.
Sweet Treats - (Name taken from Avengerkink) Is the rarest gem I’m going to go into. This section is for fics that fill multiple prompts or don’t fill any prompts but the prompter wanted to share. They require HUGE and very long running kinkmemes because filling multiple prompts in one fic is very uncommon by itself. In kinkmemes that don’t have them fics that fill multiple prompts should be listed as one fic in the fill announcement but should also be announced on all of the prompts that they fill so those OPs can see the shinny, shinny new thing they partially inspired.
Examples of Rules of Kinkmemes and Unstated Kinkmeme Etiquette
DaredevilKink and AvengerKink have the best rules for people knew to kinkmemes. I recommend reading them. http://daredevilkink.dreamwidth.org/, http://avengerkink.livejournal.com/14949.html.
Rules tend to be split into three sections: General, Prompts, and Fills.
I’m going to start with Prompts and Fills because it’s the simplest section to summarize.
Prompts will establish: If RPF is allowed If cross overs are allowed If cross posting (posting the same prompt on two kinkmemes) is allowed. How to formate the subject line of a prompt post (Does the kinkmeme want names to be alphabetized? What types of prompts are allowed.
Fills will establish: Where to announce fills What types of fills are allowed A reminder to use the [FILL] thing in the subject of the post
General Rules:
Something establishing if anonymous commenting is mandatory.
Rules for if trigger warning is mandatory and if so how to do it.
Rules about how to handle wank or disagreements that are specific to this kinkmeme.
DLDR, Don’t like something then don’t read it. It also means if you don’t like something don’t tell anyone how much you don’t like it. And definitely don’t tell the people who do like it how sick / gross / annoying / other needlessly negative thing they are for liking it.
YKINMKATO, this goes along with DLDR and seems pretty self explanatory. It may also be worded as “Don’t Kink Shame” or “Don’t Yuck Someone’s Yum”. Kink critical discussions go on the discussions post, not in the comments of someone’s prompt.
Some variation on don’t be a dick.
Negativity kills kinkmemes, so there will almost always be a stated rule against it in somewhere.
There will also be explanations about how to warn for spoilers and how video and images should be handled. That is should they be linked to from off site or imbedded.
Kinkmeme Etiquette
Now, some of this may actually be stated in the rules, but in case it isn’t this is what you should assume unless stated otherwise.
Rec-ing is allowed. As already covered, recing is an important part in the life of a kinkmeme, especially for big fandoms with lots of participants where it’s more likely someone hasn’t seen the fic in question. Even if you’ve already read the rec someone who hasn’t but liked the prompt may not have. If you must say something about a rec you didn’t want go with, “Yeah, I already saw that one. I was hoping for something more / different.”
Linking to another fic in the body of a prompt, such as “I read [link] and really liked x. I was hoping someone would write another fic where x happens.” This is important to give credit to the author of the original fic for the idea you liked about it. It also allows people lurking on the kinkmeme who like the prompt to be able to read the fic in question. It is also important if anyone wants to fill the prompt, so they can get an idea of what’s already been done and how to do something different.
This is really just my attempt at part 2 a second time. Part 2 is where I'm having a really, really hard time balancing the upsettness I feel about this other kinkmeme and the knowledge and explanations I need to include. It's easier for me to write it out while explaining to someone else what is wrong or even what they *shives* did wrong. And that's NOT how I want to come across.
So, part three:
Kinkmeme Etiquette is in place because kinkmemes need a delicate balance between rules and freedom. Too many rules, even ones unrelated to prompting, can make it feel like too strict a place where the energy of the kinkmeme is hampered. So many rules go unspoken. Including the ones that you don’t play kinkmeme police and take up these matters of etiquette anywhere but with the mods.
However, not enough rules can cause wank and negativity which also kills kinkmeme because no one wants to write for such a hostile, sucky place.
Most of the time letting the users of the kinkmeme set the pace works fine. But it just takes one ass hole to make it a hell hole everyone and so slowly but surely drive users away. So, lets go over what kinkmeme etiquette is.
1.) Never ever call something someone is doing “plugging” if real plugging or spaming is going on the mods will handle it. If there are no mods around to handle it then the kinkmeme has bigger problems going on than that one person who wrote a fic based on two prompts instead of the usual one.
2.) Rec-ing is allowed unless stated otherwise in the rules or by the prompter. If you don’t wants recs than say that. If someone else didn’t say they didn’t want recs than assume that they want recs. Or, if you’d rather, ask if recs are expectable before recing. But remember that the lurkers probably want recs, so consider that as well.
3.) Linking to a fic or outside source of inspiration in a prompt is a very good thing to do. If it’s a fic than it’s important to credit the original author with the idea you want repeated. It’s also important because a filler, luker, so forth, might not be familiar with the fic and if they like your prompt they will like your fic.
4.) If you have nothing to add to a discussion than don’t start a discussion. There are several ways to indicate that you’re voicing an opinion or support for another person’s opinion while making it clear that that’s all you had to say and aren’t interested in continuing. “+1″ is for more than just the prompt post.
5.) If you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all. This goes back to those stated rules of “Don’t be a dick” “DLDR” and “YKINMKATOK”. This mostly comes up with headcannons for characters. If you don’t like autistic!Matt or Max or trans! so-and-so don’t say anything. If you want to talk about why you don’t think those are realistic headcannons than go to your own blog and rant about it there. Doing it on the discussion post may be seen as taking wank to another part of the forum and is generally a rude thing to do anyway.
I've got a good rule: don't make a person feel like they've asked a stupid question. Assume there's no such thing.
I've even seen it happen here on the Discussion Post - someone asks a question about an interpretation of the show's plot or a legal matter or geographical location and someone jumps in to tell them that they're completely wrong in their belief or how they framed their question, making them feel like a dick (often with zero context regarding why the person is asking or the fic they're writing).
It's not cool and it makes otherwise fine people feel too intimidated to post or do anything but lurk.
Shaming anyone for anything, really, is always a bad move.
What I've noticed about kinkmeme is that everything boils down to DONT BE NEGATIVE. I mostly frame it in my mind where the kinkmeme is one of those input output machines form like elementary school math class. And if you put negativity in, you get negativity out. And after a while of doing this you just break the machine because no one wants to be in a negative space where they don't feel good posting.
I mean that's not to say NEVER EVER WANK EVER. Because some disagreement, some wank, some tense debate is important to making it feel like the space is open to ideas and alternative options, but when you then close out of those threads and all you see is more negativity where it serves no purpose, why would one want to stay?
If someone's fill is called "plugging" or if a writer sees another filler's fill being called "plugging" then why would that person want to write?
Kinkmemes are set up to make fillers feel amazing when sharing the work they made for the kinkmeme. If instead of giving fillers, who I think are one of the most important cogs in the kinkmeme machine, positivity, and instead give them negativity, why will they ever write for the kinkmeme again?
And you're never going to find a kinkmeme with too many writers and too few prompters, but we're tripping over ones with a lot prompters and not enough writers.
(That's not to say writers are infalable. It's just to say don't under value them and for gods sake, don't be a random dick to them.)
But yeah, no problem with that on this kinkmeme. Just to restate.
In fact, I'd like to share a story.
I was working on a fill, posting about 200-500 words scene snippets at a time, and every time I'd post I'd drift away, write a little more, and when I came back I was showered in love and positive comments from everyone tracking the thread. It took what was just going to be a mini fill, kept me writing for hours and turned it into a much longer and better piece than it would have been. It was hands down the best kinkmeme experience I ever had. I don't have the words to describe just how impactful that night was on my interaction and view of this kinkmeme since then. It was truely amazing.
But in some spaces it's not possible. And that's just devastating.
I think a good off-topic board is also vital. Because part of what makes this meme awesome are things like the "Ask a New Yorker" or "Ask About Medicine" threads that popped up here.
When people have identified issues with people getting things wrong in fic frequently (especially pertaining to Matt's disability), they've generally been constructive and helpful instead of rage-filled.
And shooting down people's questions or requests for help really discourages that going forward and shuts it down.
Yes! I also thing a less... stick way to interact with the people on the kinkmeme is really important. It's what creates that sense of community rather than the idea that a kinkmeme is a magical place to order fics on the go or whatever.
Hey! Project!
(Anonymous) 2015-08-02 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)So I was wondering if any of our kinkmeme vets would like to help out with this or think it's a good idea? Right now I'm just in the vague planning stages as there's so much else going on in my life right now (including 20 or so things I want to fill!). But I figure there's no harm in asking, right?
Also, I'm asking here because it's such an active kinkmeme and one of my favorites. I also think it has the least wank and best moderation which means to me that the people here might be able to offer a lot of insight into why it is they way it is and similar.

Behaviour patterns that the community adopts as a whole unconsciously that are interesting to explore rather than rules and regulations.
Re: Hey! Project!
(Anonymous) 2015-08-03 02:42 pm (UTC)(link)Yes.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-03 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)Re: Hey! Project!
(Anonymous) 2015-08-03 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)Honestly, I think it really boils down to good moderators on this meme. They don't tolerate wank.
Also, the rules here are simple and straightforward, and therefore easy to follow (I've seen some memes that get bogged down with silly rules like no discussions in the prompt post, or no comments like "seconded!" or "no discussions about this other iteration of the thing" (like, comics, or another movie) and it all seems very nit-picky and not fun at all).
... I don't know how this helps for what you want to write tho. It seems to all boil down to Be Nice and Have Fun, haha ^^;
(Also, our fandom and this meme is but a tiny thing compared to other fandoms. I think you'd need an army of mods to keep a kinkmeme in the Avengers fandom, or the Sherlock fandom from devolving into a cesspool)
Re: Hey! Project!
(Anonymous) 2015-08-03 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)But there are things like: Our kinkmeme doesn't say if recs are okay.
You know?
Re: Hey! Project!
(Anonymous) 2015-08-04 06:55 am (UTC)(link)It's fantastic that the mods seem to be so open to things like comic or other divergent conversations and prompts and are so fair to everyone.
Re: Hey! Project!
(Anonymous) 2015-08-04 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)When I first started posting, I was really hesitant, because I constantly had the paranoid feeling that I was going to do something wrong, and would then be told off about it -- anon posting or not.
Re: Hey! Project! (Please anwser new question)
(Anonymous) 2015-08-04 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)I left kinkmemes because of this.

Re: Hey! Project! (Part 1.)
(Anonymous) 2015-08-05 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)How to Kinkmeme

(Anonymous) 2015-08-05 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)DaredevilKink and AvengerKink have the best rules for people knew to kinkmemes. I recommend reading them. http://daredevilkink.dreamwidth.org/, http://avengerkink.livejournal.com/14949.html.
Rules tend to be split into three sections: General, Prompts, and Fills.
I’m going to start with Prompts and Fills because it’s the simplest section to summarize.
Prompts will establish:
If RPF is allowed
If cross overs are allowed
If cross posting (posting the same prompt on two kinkmemes) is allowed.
How to formate the subject line of a prompt post (Does the kinkmeme want names to be alphabetized?
What types of prompts are allowed.
Fills will establish:
Where to announce fills
What types of fills are allowed
A reminder to use the [FILL] thing in the subject of the post
I was hoping someone would write another fic where x happens.”
This is important to give credit to the author of the original fic for the idea you liked about it.
It also allows people lurking on the kinkmeme who like the prompt to be able to read the fic in question.
It is also important if anyone wants to fill the prompt, so they can get an idea of what’s already been done and how to do something different.
Re: Hey! Project! (Part 3)
(Anonymous) 2015-08-05 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)So, part three:

(Anonymous) 2015-08-05 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)I've even seen it happen here on the Discussion Post - someone asks a question about an interpretation of the show's plot or a legal matter or geographical location and someone jumps in to tell them that they're completely wrong in their belief or how they framed their question, making them feel like a dick (often with zero context regarding why the person is asking or the fic they're writing).
It's not cool and it makes otherwise fine people feel too intimidated to post or do anything but lurk.
Shaming anyone for anything, really, is always a bad move.
Re: Hey! Project!
(Anonymous) 2015-08-05 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)What I've noticed about kinkmeme is that everything boils down to DONT BE NEGATIVE.
Re: Hey! Project!
(Anonymous) 2015-08-06 03:32 am (UTC)(link)When people have identified issues with people getting things wrong in fic frequently (especially pertaining to Matt's disability), they've generally been constructive and helpful instead of rage-filled.
And shooting down people's questions or requests for help really discourages that going forward and shuts it down.
So it's amazing that everyone is so supportive.
