US Geography

(Anonymous) 2015-07-13 12:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I just realised how little I actually know about it.

I knew New York was in the north. But New York is north of Washington DC? Boston is north of New York?? Philadelphia is near New York??? And between it and Washington DC???? All these places are really close to another?????

Like, I know all these places but apparently I know bugger all about their locations and my world has just been rocked. So much for knowing US geography...

I'd recommend using Google Maps. That can calculate distances and travel times for you as well.

Americans are pretty bad at geography too, TBH. I'm speaking as one such American. XD

Here's a map for reference.

Boston is the northern most city. Gets cold. NYC is south of it. Philadelphia is south of that, then Baltimore, then D.C. It takes about 4 hours to drive from Boston to NYC, but I'm not sure about the rest of these cities.

Technically, Washington D.C. is considered a Southern place. It's definitely not as cold as NY or Boston in the winter. It was chosen as the capital of the U.S. to cater to powerful folk living in the more Southern colonies like Virginia.

It's pretty easy to travel from city to city by AMTRAK, though I think only business people do it on a regular basis.

Haha I've heard that. But at least they know where these cities are! I thought Boston was like, way further south. Same as New York.

Thanks! That helps a lot. I was mostly just surprised at how wrong I was. Like majorly wrong.

It's...south? Huh. I would've pegged it as northern but okay.

AMTRAK?

The expensive train that runs between all these cities.

Oh right. Thanks. =)

Wow, don't tell any actual Southerners that you consider D.C. Southern. *I'm* not Southern enough for many of them, and at least my state fought on the correct side of the Civil War to earn that title. (Okay, so Maryland was kept under martial law to prevent it from joining the C.S.A.)

And D.C. was a COMPROMISE, as being about halfway in the middle of the then existing states, north and south. (Also, it was swampland, but that doesn't have much to do with this.)

indeed! anon, i've lived on the east coast all my life and i can give you a quick rundown of distances. i live about a half hour south of washington dc so here are some travel times based on that.

to philadelphia: about 3-4 hrs
to new york city: about 4-5 hrs
to boston: anywhere from 5-7 hrs (i've only travelled to boston by plane since my dad doesn't like to drive that long)

other good stuff to know: hell's kitchen is in the borough of manhattan and is very close to broadway.

typically, no one would use cabs as much as they seem to in the show because they're so damn expensive.

the subway is a good alternative but also the nyc subway is somewhat infamous for some Unique Types that ride those trains.

if you have any specific questions regarding geography, feel free to ask.

Thanks! That also helps a lot. =)

I saw that on my map too! I though Hell's Kitchen was way further away from Manhattan than it actually is. Which also surprised me.

I figured that. Cabs are expensive here too. I've heard about the subways.

Thanks, will do!

Hell's Kitchen is actually part of Manhattan. Manhattan is the Borough (AKA New York County). Hell's Kitchen (technically, Clinton) is a neighborhood in the borough. Also, Hell's Kitchen is less than a square mile in area.

...This show really inflated what a 'city' is then. Holy shit that's small. My suburb here is bigger and I wouldn't call it a city! There's also a load of crime for a place so small...

Thanks for both informing me and blowing my mind further.

Yeah it does seem like they purposely obscure it on the show. It doesn't help that Matt says "Stay the hell out of my city" to criminals and Stick. I've been to New York a few times and assumed that they just made up some mini-city or something for the show before I found out that it was an actual neighborhood, haha.

i'm the anon who mentioned hell's kitchen being in manhattan!

yeah i was pretty confused about that. like also the people going "i gotta get out of hell's kitchen" like ok....walk six blocks, dude, you'll be out of there in no time.

(AYRT)I have no idea how American cities/towns work so I assumed that Hell's Kitchen was like, an actual council/election/something legal area within New York that like, had some powers and was a distinct something within the city.

That is, once I found out Hell's Kitchen was actually real. I thought it was just a name for a restaurant at first!

Same Anon:

XD I totally forgot about the restaurant!

I just rewatched episode 7 and there's this piece of dialogue.

Matt: What the hell are you doing in my city?

Stick: Your city? Hell's Kitchen hates your guts.

So I see where the confusion comes from.

AYRT

There's also dialogue Matt has in the final fight with Fisk that's like "This is my city; my family..." after Fisk was going on about how Hell's Kitchen doesn't deserve him and his grand plans. So at least I'm justified in my weird confusion?
