Written fic blues

(Anonymous) 2015-11-16 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just ranting. Don't mind me. Or, chip in with your own rants about fics you've written. How you figured out you were accidentally switching between third and first person, or how nobody reads them or comments on them. (Speaking of which, I only just discovered the "In the Absence of St. Germaine" fic over on Prompt Post 5, and I am loving it. How have I been missing this? I really, really hope that author hasn't abandoned it.)

My complaints really have absolutely nothing to do with the kinkmeme. I actually wrote a Daredevil fic, *not* for the kinkmeme, over on AO3. And it's slightly depressing because:

a.) Somebody commented and then deleted their comment a day later. I love comments! And probably they loved some other story they were reading on another tab and got confused and wrote a keysmashy-style comment to me. And then took it away, after I'd responded. It's depressing.

b.) I posted the fic knowing that there was a small piece missing. I finally figured out that small piece, and updated my fic today, but of course, since it's already a week old, nobody's going to read the update. I'm very glad that AO3 allows me to correct all my typos and verb tense errors without spamming the list, but I wish there were a way to say, "There's a somewhat substantial change to this fic" without adding another chapter.

(I often wish that AO3 had a more direct style of talking. Then I could do things like tell the people who bookmarked my fic to check it out again. Then again, I know I'd get smothered by the pile of spambots and pure ill will if there were a more direct method of talking through AO3, so I'm kind of glad there isn't.)

Thanks for letting me rant, Bruce! Oh, yeah, maybe you should wake up. It's lunchtime.

Don't worry; people will re-read your fic, or new people will find it and read the updated text. ^_^

I go back in and edit my fics all the time, because I'm no impatient to publish. I think I average between 200-500 words written post update for every chapter, lol.

Ouch. That's cruel. If I read your stuff, I'd be refreshing the page for your fics for *days*, hoping for a mini update.

Yeah, it was impatience. I knew my story needed just a little more, but I had to work up the nerve to write it.

lol, It's the perfectionist in me. I always find stuff that needs improving.

OP: Oh, me, too! Which is why, as I said, I'm grateful all the little editing tweaks don't spam the list.

Why do I need to anti-Britpick when I'm not British? That's just wrong. (And is it Ameripick, or what?)

I hate it when people abandon threads or ignore them.

A prompt on here really spoke to me but I needed to do a lot of work in term to research and prep to fill it because it was such a complicated topic for me (involving intersectional oppression) and by the time I had my opening written out I really wanted feed back and to share it with the anon who prompted because I'd worked so hard on it.

And nothing.
It's on my back burner so I add a couple hundred words to it every few weeks, and I go back to the post every time and nothing.

Like the hell? I couldn't drop with prompt now if I want to, it means so much to me and it's going to be such a good story but I can't get any support for writing it, not even form the person who wanted the damn thing to exist in the first place.

I really wish I was better with community building so I had more people to bitch about this stuff with in private. You know? As a community of both readers and writers without too much overlap I don't think we should be airing our dirty laundry in front of each other. It just seems like a way to sew negativity.

But on the other side I was just on a chat community for AO3 writers and when I brought this up I was told to be grateful for the lurkers or any responce I got. Which like??? Ugh.

I'm allowed to feel disappointed and unfulfilled when I post what I write here or elsewhere.

Honey it's an anon kinkmeme. We don't get notifications if people post in a dead thread or something from a couple of rounds ago. Did you post the bit your wrote, and then announce it in the WIP thread?

Why not post a link to it here, and see if the OP sees it? Or, maybe they've left the fandom. Who knows.

Tfw you're feeling pretty good about your fill; then you go to post it and see that there's already an amazing fill.
And then even though you shouldn't (because as a reader you love multifills ) you feel like a porn star with a 4" cock standing next to someone with a 10" cock that lights up and recites poetry

Oh my god I know that feel.
I mean weird metaphore for the thing but yeah. I actually got accused of plagiarism on AO3 because someone not from the kinkmeme doesn't understand multi fills. It was one of the most upsetting days as a fic writer.

That's unfortunate because as a reader I love, LOVE multi-fills. Because seeing two people's take on the same premise is interesting.

I think that sometimes also depends upon how specific the prompt is though vs. how open.

I'm pretty sure you can tick a box related to the date when editing a chapter to make it appear in the feed and notify people like it's new... does anyone else know more about this? I can't remember the specifics of how to do it right now...

Yes, you can change the publish date on the chapter, which will bump your fic to the top of the show tag feed. I don't know whether it will notify your subscribers again though.

What it's the fic writte the link.

You can change the date that the fic is posted so it doesn't look like a week old. Some of my fics have problems where when I update a chapter the whole fic doesn't update and so doesn't appear at the top of the tags and fandom. So I'll have to manually go in and change the date is was published so that people who aren't subscribed know about it.

OP: Yeah, a few people said this, but I decided I didn't want to change the original posting date. Thanks for letting me know, though!

I feel a lot better about that fic, now, actually. It's getting lots of kudos (well, lots for me; I'm not a very good or prolific fic writer). Although it still hasn't garnered any more comments, oddly enough.

I think I just wanted to moan. Thanks for allowing me, and even joining in, some of you! I'm still willing to listen to anyone else's complaints about stuff they've written.

I think it depends on the subject matter as well?

I write some things that people don't tend to admit to liking in namespace, so I get a lot of Guest kudos, or private bookmarks. And my hit counter continues to increase, so people are obviously reading it.
