Anon's comment contained no major SPAG errors that I could see, and I thought their points had merit.

It took me a couple viewings to realize that in the gym, Matt was talking about trying to beat up the editor guy, who turned out to be completely innocent, and holy shit would that have been sucky for editor guy, to be beat up by the Devil of Hell's Kitchen for no reason he could discern, but really mostly as a result of Karen's shitty badgering of Ben resulting in Ben's shitty badgering of his editor. And Doris thinking Ben went out some kind of hero when actually he was compromising all of his journalistic ethics for something that would have resulted in nothing (except a lawsuit from Fisk, maybe) makes it extra sad. Just heaps of sadness all around.

Yeah. I might've bought that he's researching every possibility (but telling himself that she's going to recover and come home is how he gets through the day) but it didn't seem like they did that intentionally.
I assume she's supposed to have ms or early onset Alzheimer's- the new generic coughing disease

They could have at least given her more of a backstory. She had info about the VA kickbacks. How? Did she serve? (I know you don't have to to work there but still) Did a family member serve and get fucked over bc funds were going into someone 's pockets?

Unless we get something better I'm just going to make my own backstory with blackjack and hookers.

I figured he wanted to talk to Lantom again, but changed his mind a bunch of times and never made it inside. Then when Lantom approached him directly he lost his nerve and noped out

has anyone here read catch-22? the character doc daneeka actually goes through something like this: he's presumed to be on a plane that crashed leaving no survivors, the military sends a death notice to his wife, she collects insurance, etc

except he....didn't die.

the plot thickens when he tries to contact his wife saying he isn't dead but his wife already collected the insurance and actually remarried so she basically tells him to never contact her again, everything is awful, etc.

Considering the kind of nights Matt has he might have just been absorbing the vibe and peacefulness of the grounds. He looks pretty exhausted in that shot and I don't think he was expecting Lanthom's approach.

I've hung out in front of my chapel before just because. It's usually pretty quiet, there's a nice breeze from the door, and it's a safe space to gather my thoughts and mentally prepare for the day. Sometimes I talk to the priests too. I never went running like Matt does but I have considerably less on my mind.

How do you define "niche character"? DD has been a popular and generally well-received comic since around 1980. The series has won numerous awards since the mid 80s including several in the past four years.

Games that Daredevil has been a playable character in:
1996 (alternate character) Spider-Man: Web of Fire (Sega 32X)
2003 Daredevil (Game Boy Advance)
2005 Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects (multi-platform)
2006 (unlockable character) Marvel: Ultimate Alliance (multi-platform)
2009 Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 (multi-platform)
2011 Marvel Super Hero Squad Online (PC/Mac)
2012 Marvel: Avengers Alliance (facebook)
2013 Marvel Heroes (PC)
2013 Lego Marvel Super Heroes (multi-platform)
2014 Marvel Contest of Champions (Android/iOS)

None of these games made any effort to reproduce his sensescape.

Babies, small children, and any physically weak adults would just be resurrected to die again in their coffins. There's no way they could get out and there wouldn't realistically be any air to sustain them until someone else could dig them out (assuming anyone was there to do so).

Blog name: devilofmidtownwest
What you post: Pretty much all Daredevil. Reblogging gif sets, fanart that I like, fanfic recommendations, talking about my fanfic writing process, posting previews
Is the above your primary blog? Nope. My primary blog is djclawson, which was Night Vale stuff.
Any additional notes? I wish Tumblr would let me switch my DD blog to primary. It's a huge hassle as it is.

If you do write that story, check out the Challenges Post where the Minor Characters Fic Fest is now open!

Sorry to mention it again, I just want to make sure everyone interested in these kinds of stories knows about it!

SO MUCH AGREE WTIH THIS.

(Except for the "hear her boobs" bit. He should have stepped away to make her more comfortable, sure, but I think that could either be a.) flirting that she was fine with or b.) the complete opposite direction, Matt showing that he's definitely not perving on her with the sense he doesn't even have, so she can feel more comfortable around him. Plus, his hearing extends in ways that people's sight doesn't, so getting out of her sightline wouldn't mean that his potential to be a creeper is diminished much at all. But yeah, I'm not crazy about that scene either.)

I can't get on the Karen train because she lies to Ben and dismisses his concern because she thinks she knows better. And then she tries to apologize to him but just ends up pushing again. People talk about Foggy having boundary issues? Ben has clearly stated his boundaries to her, and she just ignores them.

But I agree with you and the anon you responded to (who was responding to you) that the dating scene is so incredibly awkward. I always wondered why Foggy put up with Karen focusing on Matt so much, and even seemed to encourage it. I mean, I know a lot of people took that and went in a threesome direction, or a co-dependent relationship between Foggy and Matt (which I'm not disputing there are other arguments for), but I actually took that as a bit of fridge brilliance on the writer's part. It wasn't until after I'd watched the whole series that it struck me:

Ep. 1x05 ("World on Fire"; the "date" episode), Matt encourages Karen to continue translating for Elena Cardenas by telling her "I like listening to your voice." Sounds like a horrible, horrible line, and is treated as such, I think.

Later, Elena sets up the "date" between Foggy and Karen, both of which seem kind of awkward with it. Foggy tells Karen Matt stories, and allows her to grill him about Matt, making sure to tell her his disastrous dating history.

Ep. 1x10 ("Nelson v. Murdock"), the flashback shows us Foggy asking Matt, "How can I help you? What are you looking for, my young Padawan?" specifically about romantic relationships. Matt's response? "I guess just someone I really like listening to."

So, Foggy's definitely interested in Karen, but at this point, I think he's also willing to vet her for Matt, if that's who she's interested in, instead. He's also going to warn her about any pitfalls, such as Matt's tendencies in romantic relationships. Because he is far more interested in Matt getting a solid relationship with a non-evil girl than he is in getting Karen for himself. I honestly think he gives up on Karen as a romantic prospect in this episode, because she is clearly more interested in Matt. By 01x09, he's telling her about "back-channeling with Marci." ("Okay, ew," says Karen.)

Apparently, in the comics, both Foggy and Matt were interested in Karen, as well, but when she ended up with Matt, Foggy didn't let it affect his relationship with Matt at all. (Can somebody correct my comics knowledge here, if I'm wrong about that?)

So, anyhow, I consider Foggy's behavior in this episode fridge brilliance. Which is probably its own kind of unpopular opinion.

(It's also still a really, really obnoxious and insensitive way for Karen to behave, when she's agreed she's on a date with Foggy. I in no way disagree with your problem with her. That's where I started to have a problem with Karen, too.)

Sorry I'm chiming in so late on this thread. I haven't had internet access for a week!

I actually agree that Foggy is dissing the ex in this scene. But "the ex" isn't Marci; it's Landman and Zack.

I definitely think Foggy is disappointed in Marci, but a.) he does say his line *to her face*, after her behavior is atrocious; it's not like he's busting on her to Karen behind her back. He's talking TO MARCI. (Karen just happens to be there.) and b) there's every indication that both dating and break-up were *before* she "lost her soul." (And this is apparently a while after that, and Foggy was not expecting that level of nastiness from her, so it isn't "the minute you dump him he starts getting rude in public.") Later Foggy's reconsidering his relationship with her, wondering (to Karen) if she had always been so awful and he'd caught wanting relationships with the wrong people from Matt, and you can object to that, if you want, but that doesn't seem to be what this scene is about.

Instead, this scene *is* all about Landman and Zack; its power, its practices, and the kind of person you have to be to be successful there. And Foggy is rejoicing in his "breakup" with it, that he got out of that toxic relationship. Seriously, if he can compare his partnership with Matt to a marriage, how is L&Z not "the ex"? He may have had a more comfortable life externally living there (bagels!), but he didn't like the kind of person he would have had to become. If you can think of a better reason to ditch a relationship instead of committing, please let me know.

Neither of those require hospitalization at early stages, but it's also true that people don't really know what they are necessarily.

I can't find the original post but

It's a shame, I think it could be a good game mechanic. Or like a life sim where you play as Matt the lawyer and have to save your spoons for crime fighting but also put an effort into 'playing blind' so as not to arouse suspicion.

Yeah, especially since the head nurse says Doris has been there a long time, and everything I can think of would also impair her movement and speech more (though I tend to sketch while I watch tv so maybe I missed something)
Screw it, I'm not patching up their plot holes. Researching this was someone's job, and they did it poorly. I'm not angry, just disappointed

writing non english dialouge

(Anonymous) 2015-08-10 10:35 am (UTC)(link)
When you're reading an english fanfiction and theres a character who speaks a language other than english & they have a log of dialogue or are a major character how do you prefer their non-english dialogue to be represented?

Do you prefer the dialogue to be written in the actual language that they are speaking (with subtitles provided at the writers discretion)?
Or do you prefer the dialogue to be written in english with some form of punctuation used to indicate that they are not speaking english?

thank you!

Re: writing non english dialouge

(Anonymous) 2015-08-10 10:52 am (UTC)(link)
I do not speak for others, but I would prefer the dialogue be represented in English, especially if it is a conversation that goes on for any significant amount of time. It would just make things faster to read and I, personally, would just skip to the translation anyway. It just makes things faster.

Re: writing non english dialouge

(Anonymous) 2015-08-10 12:03 pm (UTC)(link)
On AO3, I've seen people write the dialogue in the non-English language, but then if you hover over it with your mouse a translation pops up.

Otherwise, I just skip over it yeah. I don't eve. Bother reading the translation, because by that point I've forgotten the context.

Re: Unpopular fandom opinions

(Anonymous) 2015-08-10 01:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm really angry that Foggy left Matt alone in Nelson vs Murdock. I was upset that Foggy forced Matt to tell him everything and then dismissed and belittled and/or didn't believe most of what Matt said, and I was upset that even knowing Matt doesn't have any family, knowing Matt was more than half dead, knowing Matt has abandonment issues and Foggy is the closest thing Matt has to family, Foggy still chose that particular moment to walk out on Matt in a fit of pique and anger and heartbreak. I don't blame Foggy for being upset, but his timing was spectacularly selfish. I guess I'm mostly upset that he tells Matt he cares about or loves Matt too much to have kept a secret like that from him, and then in the following moment ditches him knowing Matt can't even follow him. :(

Re: writing non english dialouge

(Anonymous) 2015-08-10 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Definitely in English with some 'said in XY' tagged on.
That's honestly my preferred method for non-English speech of any length anything else has not much of a point except showing off the author's language skills (or worse google-translate skills...)

Re: writing non english dialouge

(Anonymous) 2015-08-10 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh god, especially when it's done using the alphabet of that language.

Like, I keep seeing Russian being written in Cyrillic in fanfic, and my mind literally fills those words in as "blank blank" when I see them. The author could have inserted a picture of a scribble and had the same effect.

Re: writing non english dialouge

(Anonymous) 2015-08-10 03:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Unless I'm working in 1st person or 3rd person limited and the POV character doesn't speak the language (and thus it isn't necessary to understand the story), I do hover-over translation.

I feel that anything else takes a reader too far out of the story.
