Re: Unpopular fandom opinions

SO MUCH AGREE WTIH THIS.

(Except for the "hear her boobs" bit. He should have stepped away to make her more comfortable, sure, but I think that could either be a.) flirting that she was fine with or b.) the complete opposite direction, Matt showing that he's definitely not perving on her with the sense he doesn't even have, so she can feel more comfortable around him. Plus, his hearing extends in ways that people's sight doesn't, so getting out of her sightline wouldn't mean that his potential to be a creeper is diminished much at all. But yeah, I'm not crazy about that scene either.)

I can't get on the Karen train because she lies to Ben and dismisses his concern because she thinks she knows better. And then she tries to apologize to him but just ends up pushing again. People talk about Foggy having boundary issues? Ben has clearly stated his boundaries to her, and she just ignores them.

But I agree with you and the anon you responded to (who was responding to you) that the dating scene is so incredibly awkward. I always wondered why Foggy put up with Karen focusing on Matt so much, and even seemed to encourage it. I mean, I know a lot of people took that and went in a threesome direction, or a co-dependent relationship between Foggy and Matt (which I'm not disputing there are other arguments for), but I actually took that as a bit of fridge brilliance on the writer's part. It wasn't until after I'd watched the whole series that it struck me:

Ep. 1x05 ("World on Fire"; the "date" episode), Matt encourages Karen to continue translating for Elena Cardenas by telling her "I like listening to your voice." Sounds like a horrible, horrible line, and is treated as such, I think.

Later, Elena sets up the "date" between Foggy and Karen, both of which seem kind of awkward with it. Foggy tells Karen Matt stories, and allows her to grill him about Matt, making sure to tell her his disastrous dating history.

Ep. 1x10 ("Nelson v. Murdock"), the flashback shows us Foggy asking Matt, "How can I help you? What are you looking for, my young Padawan?" specifically about romantic relationships. Matt's response? "I guess just someone I really like listening to."

So, Foggy's definitely interested in Karen, but at this point, I think he's also willing to vet her for Matt, if that's who she's interested in, instead. He's also going to warn her about any pitfalls, such as Matt's tendencies in romantic relationships. Because he is far more interested in Matt getting a solid relationship with a non-evil girl than he is in getting Karen for himself. I honestly think he gives up on Karen as a romantic prospect in this episode, because she is clearly more interested in Matt. By 01x09, he's telling her about "back-channeling with Marci." ("Okay, ew," says Karen.)

Apparently, in the comics, both Foggy and Matt were interested in Karen, as well, but when she ended up with Matt, Foggy didn't let it affect his relationship with Matt at all. (Can somebody correct my comics knowledge here, if I'm wrong about that?)

So, anyhow, I consider Foggy's behavior in this episode fridge brilliance. Which is probably its own kind of unpopular opinion.

(It's also still a really, really obnoxious and insensitive way for Karen to behave, when she's agreed she's on a date with Foggy. I in no way disagree with your problem with her. That's where I started to have a problem with Karen, too.)

Sorry I'm chiming in so late on this thread. I haven't had internet access for a week!
