regardless someone needs to prompt this because i am in a major mood to write Bash Brother Foggy Nelson

Prompt search request: all the current dæmon prompts (ie: crossover with His Dark Materials series)

(Anonymous) 2015-06-22 03:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I got a hankering last night and I have no time to run off into the wild. I was wondering if someone might be kind enough to give me all the currently unfilled daemon prompts on the meme?

I wanna try to fill a need.

I'm actually German, and when I speak/write English, it's usually more British than anything. But when I write fic, I try to write it in the "accent" that the show is set in. Might be I'm slipping a few British expressions in here and there, but I'm really trying not to. :-)

Re: venting! feel free to ignore!

You know, I've been thinking about this as well. It would be so much easier if we had better tracking options than having to bookmark your own prompts to periodically come back and check them manually.

I get why a kink meme should be anon only, but I'm a total gen person, and I've been a member of gen memes where it was allowed but not mandatory to post anonymously. That always worked pretty well.

Would it be an option to have a voluntary gen/non-anon meme thread where people can choose to use their usernames when they post? Or at least a discussion thread where we can post with our usernames? I've read a few other comments where people were getting frustrated over not being able to tell the posters apart.

Re: the sadism of the fandom as a whole

(Anonymous) 2015-06-22 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the fact that there's so much whump in canon in this fandom attracts people like me who like that kind of thing. And it's not even that I'm a sadist in real life. I just have a thing for h/c in a fictional setting. For me, it's all about the emotional intensity.

Sometimes I shake my head at myself, because on a rational level, I know it's a terrible thing to want to see your favourite characters getting intentionally hurt -- be it physical or emotional. Then, on the other hand, (at least for me) it's probably got to do with living vicariously through fictional characters, so that I can "enjoy" the emotion without actually having to face it in real life.

And, hey, isn't that much more healthy than having to deal with this kind of shit in RL? ;-)

I found one that's been filled, but I know there's at least two more that I can't find. I too have a MIGHTY NEED.

I'm turning 32 this year and now I want to go check for wrinkles. THANKS. :p

But seriously, there's no earthly way they are mid-twenties. I think it's a desire of younger writers to make them sound "older" but still relatable.

Hey I should do an "I'M OLD AS BALLS ASK ME ANYTHING" thread. We can spill the tea on mortgages and hemorrhoids and childbirth and how awesome it is to feel the slow yet inevitable press of mortality upon our once-nubile flesh.

I am doing three different fills right now but if you find them, or prompt something on the new prompt post that should be going up soon, let me know about it and I will see what I can do for the burning in both our lions.

I fell in love with Iron Man and Captain America in the comics after watching the MCU, and so I was heavily into that but hadn't read a lot of DD prior to the show. I had picked up Waid's run and found it interesting but wasn't invested because I was only a casual reader.

After the show, I went back and read through as much DD as I could. I actually did go back to Miller, and I will say this: even though I usually HATE Frank Miller and I 100% get why some people are adamant that they won't read his stuff, his work on DD was actually really great. It surprised me, pleasantly. I did not hate, and was actually genuinely moved by, the initial Elektra arc and would recommend it wholeheartedly to anyone who wants to get into the comics to see where the show might be heading in Season 2. Although man, Matt does treat a bunch of women like shit during Miller's run and it's not so nice to Karen Page.

I have to say that while I am all onboard the Waid love happening here (and love, LOVE Chris Samnee's art and appreciate the lighter tone of the stories), I absolutely fell apart reading Brian Michael Bendis' run, particularly Out (which is the arc where Matt's identity is first revealed publicly). I was not a huge Bendis fan prior to reading it, but now I would say it's one of my favourite comics I've ever read. The art, by Alex Maleev, is astonishingly good, and the way that the plot completely breaks Matt down as a character and re-examines him in a new way, and the way that it evolves his relationships with Foggy, Kingpin, and everyone in his life is really moving and fascinating. Especially when you compare what Smith and Brubaker each did in their runs where they were kind of just repeating the dark tortured themes Miller set up to the point where it's painful to read, Bendis found a pretty impressive and original angle on Matt that I thoroughly enjoyed, and will likely read again soon. I highly recommend to anyone who doesn't want to start with Miller to start there - Bendis' Daredevil Vol. 1 is truly epic.

Brian Michael Bendis is awesome

(Anonymous) 2015-06-23 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
I now everyone's recommending to start with Waid, but if you want something a bit less jarring in tone and closer to the show (because Waid's run is a bit lighter and comic-bookier), start with Brian Michael Bendis' run on Daredevil.

Bendis' arc is all about the repercussions when Matt's identity as Daredevil leaks to the press. It's got an amazing Matt/Foggy friendship element going on, and Kingpin plays a huge role, and it's just this dark, sad, tragic, epic mess of a story that will break your heart.

Marvel Unlimited has his entire run - it's basically a Netflix for Marvel comics where you pay $10 bucks a month and can read as many as you want (and they even have promos where the first month is a free trial, so hit that up - that's what I originally did!)

Re: Matt's hair colour ≠ ginger

(Anonymous) 2015-06-23 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
In the comics, he's most definitely a redhead, especially now in Waid's run.

There is an adorable scene (and I can't remember which run of the comic it's in, but I think it's Waids) where Matt and his ex Black Widow both call each other "red" as their own private nickname to one another.

It's actually unusual for him to be a redhead in the comics - there aren't a lot of them.

Re: Law school is not undergrad

(Anonymous) 2015-06-23 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Regardless of the timing being 2010, I am choosing to ignore that and in my headcanon they met in their freshman year of undergrad.

It's the only thing that makes sense not only with the type of courses they're taking and type of dorm they're staying in, but also with how Foggy looks and acts when they meet, and how young they seem like they're both supposed to be.

Aren't there a lot of redheads in Marvel comics? Jean Grey (and Madelyne Pryor, Rachel Grey, and Hope Summers), Mary Jane Watson, Natasha, Volstagg, Banshee, Mystique, Juggernaut, Harry and Norman Osborne, Cletus Kasady (the guy who became Carnage), Lyra, Hellcat, Medusa, Firestar, Lorelei, Eric O'Grady, Red Sonja...

Since we're out of the freeze, how did you all find it?

It was a good idea all around I think. Gave me time to pick up another fill so rooting around in the old prompts was fun.

Re: Fic Recs thread (unsolicited recs, requests, etc.)

(Anonymous) 2015-06-23 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I want to rec Imprint which is eventually going to be a Steve/Matt/Bucky thing going by the tags, but what I like about it is how Matt's taking care of Bucky and the possibility of Bucky returning the favor. The way Matt has to word his requests is great and the fact that Bucky is as bad of taking care of himself as Matt is pretty good to.

You can find it here. http://archiveofourown.org/works/4072318/chapters/9168688
