So- what is the world on fire? Sonar? Echolocation? A mix of everything he senses blended together into a picture that forms in the adapted portion of his vision cortex?
In the comics I have seen his 'sight' drawn as wobbly red lines to a really annoying crayon like blobby thing that he says his senses have evolved to minic actual sight but not as clear. So what the hell?

What is his thing now in the comics? Does anyone know?

In comics, idk even, but as far as I write it in fanfic, his 'world on fire' thing was a really bad metaphor--basically, he perceives where objects are in a room, roughly what shape they are (eg he might confuse a tablet with a cover and a slim book), can hear electronics/even small noises, can tell where his body is in relation to other things, has a very strong sense of smell/taste/touch, etc. Like a lot of information that he gets is through the 'radar' sense, which as far as I can tell is a combination of insanely wide-range propriocetpion and echolocation. He's definitely still no-light-perception blind, though. There's lots he doesn't pick up on (subtler facial expressions, most facial expressions unless he's focusing a LOT on the person, colors of things, patterns/print, most printed words, pictures etc on a computer, lights, and so on).
Has anyone seen them? :D I'm talking about the new photos of the Punisher, Elektra and Karen.

In the fic I read and write, it's definitely all MCU!Matt. I'm not a big fan of comics in general, especially the older ones :x
That said, I did start reading Waid's run a few days ago and it's heaps of fun. VERY different from the MCU!Matt, though. Like the anon said above, this Matt is so relentlessly cheeky and funny ("sexy and he knows it" is accurate!) and the relationship between him and Foggy is fantastic.

Yeeeeah... I mean, it's tough, because the tv show and comics are visual mediums and so they have to present it to the reader/viewer visually, but it is NOT vision.
In the comics it's often described as a sixth radar sense. But Matt's description in the MCU is actually appropriate when he talks about how as humans we do scientifically have more than five senses anyway - things like balance, the ability to detect temperature through skin vs. specifically touch, even the ability to know when someone's staring at you without seeing them, etc. The idea, as far as I can tell, in the MCU is that all of his remaining (more than four) senses are heightened and that with experience and skill he can process all of the data in his brain to give him the necessary details about the world to navigate it as he does.
Hence why so many headcanons have him needing to focus or getting tired when accessing his abilities and still appreciating having his cane or other accessibility tools.
So, for example, crude echolocation in the form of knowing how loud or soft sounds are or the vibrations of sound could help Matt approximate how far away things are, while he could also detect what something is made of by how the sound bounces off it. Or he might register when he walks into a room where objects are are by the temperature variations in the room and how a slight wind moves around or through them... it's nowhere near as quick and efficient as seeing objects, but it provides him with vast amounts of data that nobody else is able to really interpret like he can.
This isn't actually that far fetched. Daniel Kish, whose eyes were removed entirely when he was a baby, has learned to ride a bike and navigate using echolocation and believes that it's feasible for many blind people to learn how to do it. Like you'd get a few decent ones then really, really, really weird ones, not just sexual weird but just weird. The Thor kinkmeme (norsekink) is very inactive but still going. I also attended that one but left after it got way too incesty for my tastes (as in Thor/Loki, still adopted brothers or even biological half brothers, not Loki was raised in Jotunheim. I mean damn it. Adoption doesn't suddenly make someone not your family member, if you found out your dad wasn't your biological father you would not be okay with him trying to fuck you.)
Ehhhhh, that Matt/Karen picture. I can't help it, I just don't ship them. And I'm kind of side-eyeing the scenario, too.
It looks like Karen's trying to teach Matt how to play pool, and yeah, girl is probably enjoying it, but like. There is NO WAY that Matt Murdock, Stick's protégé, doesn't know how to play pool like a shark. So it feels a bit weird? Like Matt's pulling one over on Karen. I don't know, maybe the way they handle it will make me feel less weird about it.
(I think it's the deception leading to full body contact thing that bothers me. It's something I don't have problems with in fic, because that's fantasy that we control, but when it's portrayed in canon? Ehhhhhh. It makes me uncomfortable. Then again, it might just be me not liking that pairing. I'll own my biases.)

^all that said, I cannot WAIT to see more of Elektra. That dynamic intrigues me. Punisher, I've got no strong opinions on yet, I think it'll depend on how they portray him and whether or not they give him a decent character arc. If they glorify him at all, then I don't think I'm going to be a fan.

Fair enough. I mean, I have to admit, I ship them like crazy so I'm somewhat blind (heh) to the possible problems they could have.

I kind of picture it as a blend of all his remaining senses. The area in the brain reserved for vision is large, and so if his other senses migrated into there and took over (mixed with some magic radioactive materials) it makes sense it would form a picture in his head of what those senses pick up. (Kind of like our imaginations but more concrete)
The brief flash of it with Claire was our only hint in the show of what he experiences and it seemed like something closer to the radar lines in the classic Daredevil comic sense, but more firey- hense the world on fire description.

Don't you still need some sight component to play pool though? Like he might know where the balls all but he can't which are which.
It'd be an exercise in concentration. You'd know how they're set up before the first hit, then you'd have to track where each individual ball goes. Talk about multitasking. It would be a great way of training the mind to process a sudden chaotic burst of stimuli.

I dont think MCU Matt is nearly as powerful as comics Matt, so I think his radar sense isn't nearly as good and mainly falls under hearing when I write him. He can visualize the very general size and shape of objects but uses other senses and human reactions to figure out what they are. So for example when I write him fighting I picture him fighting with his whole body because exact aim is not his strong suit which is why I think all those flips are so valuable because he knows he can knock someone down for sure kf he throws his whole body weight at them. He would distinguish a cardboard box from a stepping stool by the way wood or cardboard smells or if he touched it. Distinguishing a CD from a CD Rom or a DVD would not be possible at all. Despite the dumb fire description I really dont think he 'sees' faces at all and cannot distinguish facial expression from any sort of sense other than tone of voice, heartbeat, sweat, etc. I actually dont think comics Matt can 'see' faces either.
