Re: I don't know if this is the place for this, but lost a prompt, do you know it?

I dunno about the prompt, but there's a fic on AO3 that seems to be it.
It's called Two Strikes. http://archiveofourown.org/works/3776551/chapters/8394388

Re: WIP vs Complete Fills

Yeah, there are lots of fics that aren't getting "filed" properly, whether in the complete of WIP post. I try to help out and post fills when I come across them.

Kitchen and bar to the right, living room in the middle, bedroom and washroom on the left. There is a staircase that leads to the roof. There is a hallway/foyer area separated by a wall parallel to the kitchen that leads out into the hallway.

can i just say, i almost never actually use the bookmark function on my laptop (because i am technologically inept and dropdown lists scare me), but i now have... 15 threads bookmarked from this meme?? 90% of my bookmarks are the daredevil kink meme.

so my question is, what do i do next time someone asks to use my computer.

(Anonymous) 2015-06-09 05:41 pm (UTC)(link)
You move them to Diigo or a folder named something boring like "taxes" unless it's your accountant looking at your computer.

prompt search?

Does anyone know if anybody filled that prompt about Matt's mother dying and him getting contacted by her family and going to her funeral?

I skimmed the meme yesterday and it hadn't gotten filled then. Sorry anon.

Where exactly is Hell's Kitchen?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-09 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm confused. People keep referring to it as a city, but I got the impression it was part of New York city. Is it like a district in New York city or is it just super close and people keep thinking it's a part of NYC. Help.

Re: Where exactly is Hell's Kitchen?

(Anonymous) 2015-06-09 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
It's an area in new york, like manhattan or harlem or queens or brooklyn. It's actually quite small. i imagine they call it their city because it sounds better than saying "my town," or "my community"

So, it's a neighborhood within the larger city. Okay.

It's a neighbourhood within Manhattan, in fact. :-)

In today's New York, it's not much of a "neighborhood," tbh. It's got some fun bars etc and can have a decent buzz, but it's a dense, gentrified area on the west side of Midtown. Anything that close to Times Square and the theater district isn't going to have much by way of ~grit~ or character today. It's just....city, with a fair number of tourists who turned the wrong way out of their theaters.

Which is why it's clever of the writers to use the Battle of New York to explain why Hell's Kitchen has gone back to the sleazier days of the first Daredevil comics.

But long story short...the Hell's Kitchen of DD might as well be a fictional locale, for all the resemblance it bears to reality. Much of the show is filmed in Brooklyn.

(Source: living in NYC, dropped too much money at Hell's Kitchen bars last year while dating a guy who lived there, hah.)

SA

But in terms of specifics, it's west of 8th Ave to the Hudson, north of 34th st (i.e. Penn Station) and South of 59th st (i.e. Columbus Circle, the SW corner of Central Park).

Ask about New York thread!

(Anonymous) 2015-06-10 03:15 am (UTC)(link)
So I was going to make a post whining about how much people get wrong about NYC in their fics, but then I realized that's dickish and uncharitable when I could be helpful instead.

So. Are there things that people would like to know about the city? I'm pretty familiar with both Hell's Kitchen and Morningside Heights (i.e. where Columbia Law is located...even though the law school scene is filmed at Brooklyn College). DD Hell's Kitchen is nothing like IRL HK, but details.

Note: I've only been here for a few years, so will cede to the expertise of lifelong New Yorkers.

To be picky...Manhattan, Queens, and Brooklyn (and the Bronx and Staten Island) are boroughs, a division of the city that is AFAIK unique to NYC. Each borough is its own state county and has elected officials.

Neighborhoods are within the boroughs. Their boundaries are more fluid since they're not official administrative units in the same way. Harlem and Hell's Kitchen are neighborhoods in Manhattan; Crown Heights and Williamsburg are neighborhoods in Brooklyn, etc.

When Matt and Fisk talk about cleaning up their city via Hell's Kitchen, I see it as them taking ownership of the bit of Manhattan that they think they can control. Maybe Fisk hopes to spread out from there and Donald Trump his way through the 5 boroughs, but it'd take a whole army of vigilantes to patrol all of Manhattan, let alone all of NYC. For Matt, fixing his city just means doing what he can to fix his backyard. No one would ever refer to Hell's Kitchen as a city in and of itself.

Since I don't have any specific questions right now, what are some of those things you commonly see people get wrong in their fics?

Okay so wow can i just say thanks.. for offering to do this. I don't have any questions right now but no doubt in the future I will be taking advantage of this.
Thanks!

Hmmm, the thing that's been getting to me lately is such a dumb little detail, but it's seeing people acting like Columbia Law is located in the bustling heart of the city. It's in Morningside Heights, which is a pretty quiet area composed largely of educational institutions (the Columbia behemoth, Barnard, a couple of seminaries, Manhattan School of Music...). That doesn't mean that it's silent, especially along Broadway, but the noise and activity is pretty low key - unless you're unfortunate enough to live near the frats.

(My heart for a fic of Matt fanboying over Thomas Merton at Corpus Christi on 121st).

Does the hospital where Claire works actually exist, and if so where is it?

Re: Ask about New York thread!

(Anonymous) 2015-06-10 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
According to the MCU wiki, Claire works at the Metropolitan-General Hospital, located somewhere in Midtown. It does not exist. The two other hospitals mentioned in Condemned, Mercy and St. Mary's, are also fictional. (Or at least, there used to be an Our Lady of Mercy in the Bronx, and a St. Mary's in Brooklyn, but both are closed/renamed and it wouldn't make any sense to send ambulances to either from Midtown Manhattan).

Are you familiar at all with the schools that are in Hells Kitchen area? (im doing some preliminary research myself but im just... *frustrated shaking of my computer*)

Specifically I'm wondering what schools exist (primary & middle/secondary), generally what sort of funding and facilities they have.
(also what american primary schools are like generally & more specifically if you have any experience with the implementation of Disability act's in schools/generally because while I've done a lot of research I know the legislation can often be very different from the reality of it's implementation)

as an australian who has very little knowledge regarding new york/america in general (geographically speaking) i never ever would have guessed that hell's kitchen was a real place. never thought to google it since i honestly believed it was fictional, oops. haven't written any fic yet but thanks for saving me from a potential disaster!!

Sorry, but as a relatively recent transplant, I'm not so useful on this one. TBH, DD has invented seemingly all the institutions that Matt interacts with, so you'd be more than justified in making stuff up. Plus, IRL Hell's Kitchen is pretty much nothing like the neighborhood portrayed in the series, so the resources available to actual schools are (hopefully????) better than what might be there in the shitstorm of DD's HK.

And I'm terribly ignorant about the laws and practices around students with disabilities. Maybe someone else can step up to the plate here.
