ayrt: YEAH, shrug, idk, i think that his comments about being "too big/too fat for x or y" were understandable? i mean, i'm not fat but i feel like people constantly underestimating your size bc they're used to fitting for smaller people must get kinda irritating? i'm actually impressed he's as upfront about being fat as he is, though, i really appreciate how he talks about himself. like, on top of that the dude braids his hair and paints his nails, he's obviously quite secure in his identity? idk, i admire that, y'know?
AND NOOOO DON'T TALK TO ME ABOUT HIM POSSIBLY TURNING OUT TO BE AN ASSHOLE, i'm still suffering from constant anxiety that someone's going to try and pull a "your fav is problematic" on him or charlie for something minor augh
The quirkier ties and things could have been thrifted. Tell me Foggy wouldn't obnoxiously hum Macklemore in the aisles of a thrift shop. Some lucky bastards can build wardrobes like Karen's for a fraction of the retail price because they're fucking wizards at that shit, but I doubt that's what they intended.
Really though, it should be the show's job to tell us that. I liked that they had the billboard to explain why Matt's apartment is literally the size of a house (though I don't know shit about real estate)
How plausible is the 'billboard ruining the apartment value' thing? I mean it's still NY. Real estate is insane. My New Yorker grandpa would've shanked someone for that apartment and used their skin to make blackout curtains. Is the view such a big factor that they'd have no choice but to rent to a broke-ass lawyer with a terrible credit score just because he isn't bothered by the billboard?
Bahaha, yeah, I think this is one of those things writers just always handwave. I'm sure a New York real estate company would charge full price for that apartment given that billboard or not, it's still in Manhattan and really big.
It seems like realistically, there are very few characters on television that could realistically afford their nice New York apartments.
Especially when it comes to apartment-sizes I have just stopped caring. It's not just NY, even broke student everywhere have often nice and spacious flats...but yeah the show could have made a a bit more of an effort to convey the whole 'broke lawyer'-thing...
I wonder if it's just one of those things where the wardrobe was chosen simply because it looked good and we're not supposed to know how expensive it really is? I remember someone pricing John Watson's watch at something like $3000, which is ridiculous for someone like Kohn to own and doesn't fit with his character at all, but in reality was probably something Martin owned and just decided to wear.
Also, speaking as someone who is pretty poor, and debt-laden, sometimes even poor people need nice things? If they want to be lawyers, they have to look the part, so I could see either of them justifying buying a couple of very nice suits as being "investment pieces," and then cheating on things like the shirts or the shoes or the ties by buying cheap ones. (Headcanon that Foggy wears an expensive tie clip to distract people from the fact that he bought the ties from a consignment store)
First off, I don't think that Stick took all of Matt's inheritance. Probably only a decent chunk of it. So he would have still had some left to pay for school and the rest would have been covered by scholarships. So he has no student debt in my mind.
Second, Foggy clearly is someone who wishes he could dress better and carry himself better but is obviously hopelessly broke. He begs for free drinks at Josie's, he wants to go barter in the fish market with Karen (probably because his apartment sucks so it's more fun than going home anyway), and I totally see agree that the tie pin was a graduation present from Matt and the ties are second hand.
Regarding the accessibility stuff, I'm almost certain that Matt must be able to apply for some kind of government assistance to help him pay for stuff like that when he needs it.
With regards to Matt's clothing and silk sheets, I think that the show states that his apartment he only got because of the billboard. And if you actually look at it, it's sparse. It's clearly not fixed up - you can still see partitions and drywall, etc. - and it has next to no furniture even before Stick destroys it and he leaves it as is afterwards. There's no books on bookshelves, or collections of stuff, and it hasn't been painted or made to look like anything other than a big empty space. He clearly also doesn't have to pay much in electricity and doesn't have much food in his fridge.
I think that Matt probably lives practically like a hobo in a lot of respects so that the self-care aspects of his life related to his senses can be managed - so he buys very little food, but when he does it has to be the best food and he goes to farmers markets, and he wears seriously expensive tailored suits because if his clothes don't fit him right it drives him nuts, but he also doesn't go out to eat ever, doesn't buy anything entertainment-related, doesn't do ANYTHING else for himself. He probably washes his clothes by hand and hang-dries them, and his cell-phone is probably a pay-as-you-go, etc. He's probably used to living with nothing because he grew up in an orphanage and would rather have a couple of $3000 suits than anything else. He only shells out enormous money for those few things that he just can't live without that other people don't really get.
I think it probably perplexed Foggy enormously throughout most of their friendship and made him think that Matt was super pretentious (but he was always nice enough to not say anything about it). Foggy is probably still eating ramen noodles every night and living in a tiny studio apartment with a Murphy bed and roaches, so Matt's spending habits sometimes irritate him.
And in my headcanon he's also in a LOT of debt, but not from school like Foggy. His crazy debt all comes from getting his place set up and footing the initial bill for Nelson and Murdock largely himself because he felt bad for dragging Foggy away from Landman and Zach.
So that's my explanation for it. Make of that what you will. :)
Just FYI: The Braille display Matt has for his computer costs several thousand dollars alone. Granted, he might have gotten that through some kind of student disability thing for free or less, but I'm just sayin'...
OP - yes, Foggy pulling a cute wardrobe from thrifts and vintage shops would be accurate, especially considering his attitude about money and flair for funky details. He might be wearing some decent style, yes, but the thing to note is they don't fit him well. He's buying sizes that are too big, maybe it's a self conscious thing, but he's never paid to have his clothes properly altered. Most of us don't, and honestly this is probably a very specific mindset to make sure your clothes fit well (I'm looking at you, Murdock). Foggy's clothes are a little slouchy, a liiiiitle sloppy, very comfortable, and cute. They're a perfect representation of his character. And at perfect odds with his prissy (I say this w/affection) partner over there.
NAYRT but everything you're saying is making me grin like an idiot. i'm definitely going to be paying more attention to their clothes in future omg, this is so cute.
As much as I love textiles and the (fashion) industry in general, my big fannish heart likes to figure out why character X is wearing Y, and whether it makes sense in the context of Z universe.
For DD, the clothes are telling their own story wrt Matt and Foggy and all the characters (omg FISK AND VANESSA), I'm so good with all of it, except where Matt's money is coming from. I'm just not seeing that. Maybe something was cut in post? I've no idea. The costumers did a lovely job, tho, on characterising the wardrobes. A really lovely job.
There are tax breaks for making some workplaces ADA-compliant, but only up to %50 and you have to pay up front, then deduct it from your taxes later. L&Z looked fancy enough to afford the display and the Braille printer, but stealing all that equipment from them would be a lot more risky than taking a boxful of bagels.
1) Five times someone else tried to kill Matt and he stopped them + one time he tried to kill himself and someone else stopped him.
2) Gap filler for how Matt found out that Foggy was in the hospital (between episodes 6 and 7)
2 1/2) Not really a prompt fill, but someone mentioned in the discussion thread that they were peeved at some fic writers who wrote Matt being annoyed at his screen reader voices because they sound so mechanical -- when really they should be more like an endearing presence because he's lived with them for so long. And so I kinda wanted to write a 5-Times fic for that, though I must admit I haven't really gotten very far.
i have to admit it... i got the omnibus, started in the morning on my day off, and finished it that same night oh my god it was so good
i hope they'll manage to do wonderful things with her hilarious, jaded, hot mess attitude even if superheroes aren't quite the same established presence in the mcu as they are in 616
I wonder if they're actually going to put him in full purple body paint?? Given the more realistic style they tried to go with in DD, I keep thinking they'll try to play it down, but a part of me almost wants them to go balls to the wall comicbook aesthetic and still manage to make him pants-shittingly terrifying.
Haha they don't actually get a lot of screentime together, but Jess reflects on him a lot when he's not there. You know your life is a mess when Matt Murdock is the voice of reason in it tbh.
You totally have to come back when you read it because I want to hear what other people think about them! I wish there was more comics fic than there is, and I definitely wish there was more "Jessica & Luke play bodyguard for Matt" fanfics (or any), since it wasn't explored as much on-panel as I wanted, I love all three of them.
I have to agree with you, nonny. I... really can't believe Matt has a terrible credit score? I believe he's gone through a hellish life to get where he is, but he's too, erm, obsessively correct about weird minutiae (and by minutiae I mean being a good boy - maybe it's all that catholic guilt) to let his credit score suck. (Late on a payment? NEVER. Avoid the hospital and stitch your own stab wounds? OF COURSE.)
Honestly. I don't care how bad the Avengers (film) tore up Manhattan, it's difficult to believe some heart-of-gold NYC real estate agent approving a broke-ass, newly-licensed blind lawyer with a craptastic FICO for 'an expensive shithole'. You saw how the other agent for their tiny little law office was all 'are you in on this discounted deal or not' etc, and Foggy was still making a FIGHT ME face and ready to keep looking for something even cheaper, and Matt blithely steps in and says, 'We'll take it' while Foggy glares at him. And again, there's Matt spending a lot of money they supposedly don't have.
I guess it's not so much the quality of the clothes Matt is wearing, it's his attitude towards money in general. He's the original Sensitive Guy so, yes, I can see he'd need good quality materials to wear or sleep on that don't make him feel like he's being tortured every second of every day, but everything he needs or has requires money, a lot of money. Which makes me want to look for a source of income. (How many sugar daddies in the MCU besides Stark? I kinda want to make suspicious eyes at Marc Spector...)
+1 Image is important, especially for a visibly disabled person. People will question his ability to practice no matter what, but a bad suit could be the difference between 'I'm hesitant but he seems capable' and 'He can't size a suit, how's he gonna build a legal defense?'
