So was anyone else disappointed at how underutilized superstrength was? I haven't seen Jessica Jones yet (Suicide triggers my OCD HARD) so I don't know if the show was different or not, but I was expecting dudes to be flying tens of feet left and right from single punches.

People like JJ and Luke shouldn't be struggling with street level grunts!

Madame Gao have Jessica and Luke a run for their money in that departnent tho she was doing it with her mind

Nah, too cartoonish for me. Not a very big fan of superpowers in general, to be honest.

DA just stepping in to ask if we coild maybe not be this rude about stuff?

Believe it or not, historically on this meme a great many people have expressed that they came to Daredevil because they liked the grittier, more dark aspects of it and that it was trying for more realism. Many of them have expressed frustration with the emphasis on the Hand and more superheroic stuff for exactly that reason - season 1 really was much more of a crime drama.

Many of the people here have also stated they don't like / have never even seen the rest of the MCU.

I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Honestly, some of those people are among the best writers here! Their POV and interests are different and bring something unique to the fic besides just Matt meeting Clint in a dumpster for the eightieth time (no offense to anyone who enjoys that because I do too).

And we certainly shouldn't shame those people or rub it in their face when the superheroic stuff takes over or is emphasized. Like... why be a jerk about it?

Everyone should feel welcome here.

It's a superhero show about, quite literally, vigilantiism and superpowers. I don't know if it's possible for the superpowers to be over-emphasized in canon. That's like saying Law and Order over-emphasizes crime and the justice system.

First of all, you asked, so I don't see why you're so indignant about me answering.

I am *here* because Daredevil was not only quite realistic, but also addressed real life issues and discussed them in a novel way that I haven't seen before. Jessica Jones was doing okay in that regard as well. Luke Cage tried. It didn't really mange it, but was still groundbreaking in some ways.

So yeah, I keep watching. It's not always about people flying from single punches. Some of us are here for other stuff, too.

Jesus, man, it's some off the cuff ribbing, don't have a cow over it.

SA, again

And, to talk about unnecessary.... Why are you complaining about unrelated pet peeves on this post, as if I've originated All That Is Wrong With The Kinkmeme? It looks to me like you're the one making things personal here.

...did you just write two aggressive comments in a row (again), and then accused someone else of being overinvested?

da

Everyone should feel welcome here, but lbr if you're going to come into an established house of worship for a comic book show and be ~dismissive~ because it's too comic booky for you, then you ought to know some people are going to get offended.

There's no need for them to be a jerk about it, either.

I was a little upset with JJ's lack of strength in Defenders, yeah. Her strength seems to wax and wane according to whatever is needed in the scene, and that's one of my issues with JJ on her show, too. It could be her? She's prone to panic attacks and is drawn as a fearful individual at times. Maybe she's just scared at some points in the show, she's still human.

It's been my experience that pretty much any movie or TV show that features people or creatures with super-strength will be incredibly inconsistent with it. In one scene they're lifting a huge fallen tree one-handed, and then in another they're struggling to do something that should only take a fraction of that strength. It's annoying, but it's just one of those things that you more or less have to hand-wave or else it'll drive you insane.

That being said, it did seem especially bad here. Because absolutely, if Jessica is indeed capable of *catching* and holding that huge elevator complete with Luke and Danny, then knocking out street level grunts should be a joke to her. Same goes for Luke when we see him lifting huge pieces of concrete debris and the like. Arguments can be made about adrenaline, and I remember Stick calling out Luke in particular for holding back (because he didn't want to kill people), but it's still a stretch, and it's not like it's only in fights that you see the inconsistencies.

*shrugs* Like I said, it's just one of those things. I can actually hand-wave quite a lot if there are other aspects of a show that I'm enjoying, and that's certainly the case here. :)

I've always thought it was a combination of her being drunk/tipsy/in withdrawal at any given point, and the fact that she doesn't have great control over her own strength.

That works pretty well, actually.

(Anonymous) 2017-09-07 03:04 pm (UTC)(link)
This is a really good point. In the comics she struggles with flight, she should be able to do it but can't control it so it's more like long jumping.
