I loved that scene. Priests aren't there to try to uncover new facts, and Lantom has been there to state plainly, because Matt needs to have things hammered into him (sounds dirty, I'm so sorry) so he can't dodge away from it. He needs the absolution and acceptance a priest can give him, but if you let him, he'll go on believing he's The Worst and doesn't deserve forgiveness. He wants it, and Father Lantom kind of gently forces that on him. Or at least that's how I see them. It's not about what we know as the audience, it's about what Matt's struggling with and needs to accept.
