Did Matt have to stay behind?

Did Matt really need to stay behind to deal with Elektra? Something tells me that the heroes could have easily come up with a plan where one of them didn't have to remain down there in the pit while the others went back up the elevator.

He clearly stayed done there, because he wanted to. I think they knew that was his choice and they didn't care enough to try and change his mind.

Alternately, wouldn't it make logical sense for one of them (Jessica most likely) to just knock Matt unconscious and then they work together to carry him out?
